Transforming Our Bedroom: The Quest for Dark, Moody Walls with Benjamin Moore’s Rockport Gray
The journey to revamp our master bedroom has officially begun, and we’ve taken the plunge into the world of darker wall colors! For months, John has been advocating for a more dramatic, cozier feel in our sanctuary, and we decided it was finally time to put his vision to the test. Our method? The trusted (and often surprising) swatch test, utilizing two beloved paint colors we already had on hand.

You might recall our initial, albeit rudimentary, attempt to visualize this transformation through a poorly photoshopped image a while back. That original concept leaned towards a blue-gray, but our current rug and bedding already offer a rich palette of colors, prompting us to seek a more neutral, yet equally sophisticated, brown-gray or “putty” shade. We meticulously selected two contenders from Benjamin Moore’s esteemed collection: Gray Horse and Rockport Gray. Gray Horse, a favorite smoky gray, currently graces the walls below the chair rail in our office. Rockport Gray, a deeper, moodier brown-gray, has already transformed our attached master bathroom into a sophisticated retreat. We anticipated certain outcomes, but the reality of seeing these colors on our bedroom walls proved to be quite an enlightening experience.
The Unexpected Revelations of Paint Swatches: Gray Horse vs. Rockport Gray
One of the most crucial lessons in interior design, especially when it comes to paint, is that colors behave differently under various lighting conditions and in different environments. What appears one way in a well-lit office can be entirely transformed in a bedroom with different natural light exposure. Take Gray Horse, for instance. In our office, under the chair rail, it presents as a distinctly dark and smoky gray, especially noticeable on the left side of the image (below). It offers a significant contrast to the lighter Moonshine hue above the rail, contributing to a rich, layered aesthetic that feels quite dark and impactful in person.

However, when we applied Gray Horse to our bedroom wall, the results were strikingly different. The color, visible on the top swatch in the subsequent image, appeared much lighter and less pronounced than we anticipated. It lost some of its moody depth, blending more subtly into the background rather than making the bold statement we were after. This phenomenon perfectly illustrates why testing paint colors directly in the space you intend to paint is non-negotiable. Lighting, surrounding elements, and even the direction a wall faces can dramatically alter a paint’s perceived shade.
In stark contrast, Rockport Gray, applied as the bottom swatch, immediately captivated us. It was truly love at first swipe. This particular photograph doesn’t fully capture its incredible “putty-ness”—a sophisticated blend that feels almost equally mocha and gray. It’s a color that exudes warmth, depth, and an understated elegance. Its ability to shift subtly between brown and gray tones depending on the light gives it a dynamic quality that we found irresistible, making it an instant frontrunner in our bedroom transformation.

The Importance of Strategic Swatch Placement for Optimal Results
To ensure we made the most informed decision, we didn’t just paint one swatch. We meticulously applied test swatches of both Gray Horse and Rockport Gray in three distinct locations within the bedroom. This comprehensive approach allowed us to observe how each color interacted with varying light sources, architectural features, and existing decor elements throughout the day. Our chosen test spots included:
- The wall directly next to the bedroom door, catching light from the hallway and interior.
- The wall adjacent to the bathroom doorway, providing insight into its transition from a darker, established color.
- Crucially, the wall situated behind our bed, where we envisioned a dark, impactful backdrop that would allow our headboard to truly pop and become the focal point of the room.

Observing the swatches in these varied locations reinforced our initial impressions. On the wall behind the bed, the Gray Horse swatch (barely visible under the right half of the mirror) seemed to recede, lacking the desired punch. However, the Rockport Gray swatch, positioned further to the right, made our headboard look absolutely fantastic. Even in a small test patch, its depth and richness created a striking contrast, making the headboard appear more defined and luxurious. This visual confirmation solidified our imagination: picturing this beautiful, rich gray covering the entire wall brought John’s campaign for darker walls vividly to life.

Rockport Gray: The Ultimate Choice for Our Master Bedroom
Bingo! The decision was unanimous: Rockport Gray it is. This choice feels incredibly serendipitous, especially since the color already adorns the walls of our attached master bathroom. Extending it into the bedroom creates a seamless transition and a cohesive flow between these private spaces, a design strategy often employed in sophisticated homes. Many master suites benefit from this continuous color scheme, which unifies the area and enhances the sense of luxury and calm. With Rockport Gray as the backdrop, our headboard will undoubtedly emerge as the undeniable star of the room, while still allowing the vibrant colors present in our other bedding and rug to shine through.
Though Rockport Gray is a neutral, it is far from a boring selection when viewed within the context of the entire room. Its unique blend of mocha and gray tones provides a richness and depth that traditional neutrals often lack. It creates an inviting atmosphere, perfect for a bedroom sanctuary, while also providing a versatile foundation for future decor changes. Looking ahead, we’re even contemplating adding a very soft, light blue tone to the ceiling someday. This subtle addition would beautifully complement the moody gray walls, introducing an unexpected touch of serenity and sky-like expansiveness. It could be a delightful and sophisticated touch, right?

Our Home’s Master Palette: A Thoughtful Blend of Hues
Rockport Gray represents one of the deepest colors we’ve embraced in this house, surpassed only by the dramatic dark teal in the guest room and on the back of our dining room built-ins. This intentional use of darker shades is precisely what makes our home’s overall color scheme so captivating and balanced. We believe in creating a “master-palette” where a thoughtful mix of vibrant pops of color, serene lighter tones, and sophisticated darker hues all work harmoniously together. This approach ensures that while each room has its unique personality, the entire house feels cohesive, inviting, and thoughtfully designed. It’s truly enjoyable to cultivate such a diverse yet harmonious mix throughout our living spaces.
Let’s take a quick tour through our home’s diverse and engaging color story:
- In Clara’s room, a soft, inviting pink creates a playful yet tranquil environment, perfectly suited for a child’s imagination.

- Our kitchen and laundry room are infused with a cheerful, greeny-yellow, bringing a fresh and energetic vibe to these high-traffic areas.

- The guest room makes a bold statement with its deep, dramatic dark teal, offering a luxurious and welcoming experience for visitors.

- This same captivating dark teal reappears on the back of our dining room built-ins, providing a sophisticated backdrop for decor and a surprising pop of color within a more formal space.

- And finally, the living room and main dining room maintain a serene elegance with a versatile light gray, serving as a bright and airy foundation for the rest of our home’s decor.
Our experience has taught us a valuable lesson: rooms with more neutral wall colors, like the light gray in our living and dining areas, often become the perfect canvas for us to unleash our creativity with accessories. It’s in these spaces that we find immense joy in layering vibrant rugs, eye-catching headboards, plush pillows, and captivating art. This strategy allows us to inject personality and color without overwhelming the space. Consider our office, for example: despite its soft, neutral walls, the bright art, lively accessories, and those “happy” chairs create an incredibly vibrant and dynamic feeling. The neutral backdrop simply allows these colorful elements to truly shine, giving the room a sense of depth and curated charm.

The same principle applies to our living room, where neutral walls provide the perfect foil for bright pops of color in the rug, carefully selected artwork, and an array of inviting pillows, achieving a beautiful and harmonious balance. Our dining room similarly follows suit: soft and neutral walls are enhanced by colorful curtains, the striking dark teal backs of our built-ins, and our newly revitalized, painted buffet. These examples demonstrate that neutral walls don’t equate to boring design; instead, they liberate us to explore an endless spectrum of color possibilities through textiles, furniture, and decorative accents. It’s about building layers of interest and allowing each element to contribute to a richer, more engaging aesthetic.

In essence, choosing more neutral wall colors provides a foundational versatility, freeing us up to experiment with a much broader range of “over-the-top” colorful elements, creating dynamic and deeply personal spaces without any sense of confinement.
Embracing the Journey: Trial, Error, and the Joy of Transformation
So, here we are: we’ve chosen our color. The decision is made, and we’re ready for the transformation. Our bedroom is currently in the “before” stage, eagerly awaiting its new coat of Rockport Gray.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for the exciting “after” pictures, complete with a time-lapse video, once everything is dry and beautifully put back together! We’re always curious about your design adventures: what have you been painting lately? Do you find yourself repainting rooms whenever the creative urge strikes? Thankfully, repainting is one of the most cost-effective and impactful ways to refresh a space. For us, a room typically only takes about a day to complete, making it a relatively quick and rewarding project. There’s no need to live with a paint color you don’t absolutely adore, especially since it’s often the easiest and most inexpensive change you can make to your home. Fun fact: in our very first house, we repainted every single room twice to achieve perfection, except for our bedroom. It’s quite amusing to us that the very first room we’re tackling for a repaint in this house is, you guessed it, our bedroom!
This entire process underscores our enduring design philosophy: we’re still wholeheartedly relying on the same method we adopted six years ago when we first moved into our starter home—the invaluable approach of trial and error. It might sound a bit audacious or even risky to some, but it has consistently proven to be the most effective way for us to truly learn what we love, what we dislike, and how to gradually inch closer to creating a house that feels profoundly more like home. We’ve unequivocally learned that being paralyzed by indecision, or forcing ourselves to “love” something that simply doesn’t resonate, is far less effective than being brave, diving in, and initiating a change. So, here’s to hoping we can conquer the remainder of this painting project by the end of the day, reveling in the joy of transformation and the satisfaction of a space truly designed for us.
