Welcome to the exciting chronicles of our latest home transformation project, affectionately dubbed “Operation Ditch The Blue Trim!” As we speak, our dedicated team (comprised mostly of us, fueled by caffeine and an unwavering vision) is deep in the trenches, meticulously un-blue-ing every corner of the second floor. This ambitious phase encompasses four bedrooms, a generously sized hallway, and no less than ten doors, all patiently awaiting their fresh, modern update. For those eager for a sneak peek into the world of trim painting and its transformative power, we promise a comprehensive report with photos and insights very soon. Stay tuned for our full update, expected on Wednesday!

The genesis of these detailed project posts stems directly from your curiosity. Many of you have asked how we meticulously organize the myriad of tasks on our seemingly endless home improvement to-do list. Our secret, if you can call it that, is a dynamic, continuously evolving document – essentially one long, run-on list that we update as we progress through each stage of our renovation journey. Your persistent requests to share this ‘brain dump’ eventually inspired us to make it public. We’ve found that openly declaring our intentions and milestones provides an incredible surge of momentum, keeping us motivated and accountable. And, let’s be honest, the pure satisfaction of crossing off a completed task delivers a truly delightful ‘mom-buzz.’ So, without further ado, allow us to peel back the metaphorical skull and give you a peek into the DIY-loving brains behind this venture. While plans are always subject to evolution and delightful changes of mind (we anticipate about fifty revisions!), this snapshot represents our current, most comprehensive vision for turning this new house into our dream home. Be warned: it’s a long one, but packed with inspiration for your own home renovation projects! #WarningItsLong
The Front Yard Transformation: Crafting Curb Appeal (0% Complete)
Our journey begins at the very first impression: the front yard. Our aim is to create a welcoming, vibrant, and well-maintained exterior that truly enhances our home’s curb appeal and sets the tone for what lies within. This extensive outdoor makeover requires careful planning and execution.
- **Ground Cover & Tree Removal:** We’ll start by systematically digging up all the invasive, quickly spreading ground cover that currently dominates the landscape. This is crucial for creating clean lines and allowing intentional plantings to flourish. Simultaneously, addressing essential tree removal is paramount, not only for aesthetic reasons but critically for the long-term health and safety of our property. Our home inspector’s invaluable guidance helped us identify specific trees that were beyond salvage due to disease, decay, or structural risk. Removing these will prevent potential hazards, protect the house’s foundation, and create a healthier environment for new plantings to thrive.
- **Lawn Revitalization:** Following the removal of unwanted elements, our focus shifts to nurturing a lush, healthy lawn. This involves thoroughly aerating the yard to improve soil health, leveling any uneven spots, and then carefully seeding with high-quality grass seed to establish a robust and beautiful green space.
- **Inviting Planting Beds:** To soften the hardscape and introduce natural beauty, we envision creating new, strategically placed planting beds upfront. These will be generously mulched to retain moisture and suppress weeds, then filled with a thoughtful selection of plants that offer year-round interest and complement the home’s architecture.
- **Exterior Repainting:** The house’s exterior siding and trim are in desperate need of attention. We’ll undertake a complete repaint, addressing areas with peeling paint, minor rot, and general wear to protect the structure and significantly refresh its appearance. Choosing durable, weather-resistant paints will be key to longevity and curb appeal.
- **Walkway Redesign:** The old, cracked concrete walkway from the driveway to the front door is slated for a complete overhaul. Our vision includes replacing it with a more aesthetically pleasing design featuring gentle curves, flanked by charming planting beds on both sides. This will create a softer, more inviting path to the entrance.
- **Elegant Hardscaping:** Inspired by stunning landscape designs like this house’s awesome landscaping, we plan to incorporate beautiful hardscaping elements around the front. We are particularly drawn to the idea of adding raised stone beds, which will introduce texture, visual interest, and a touch of architectural elegance.
- **Dwarf Maple Trees:** A personal favorite, we intend to plant a few green dwarf maple trees. We absolutely adored the one we planted at our previous home (which you can spot in this post under the window on the right), and we believe they will add delightful character and seasonal beauty to our new landscape.
- **Exterior Up-lighting:** To enhance the home’s nighttime charm and highlight its architectural features, we’ll install exterior up-lighting. Observing how some neighbors utilize this feature, we’ve seen firsthand how it creates a magical and inviting ambiance after dusk.
- **Illuminated Driveway Borders:** We love the look of low, curved brick borders lining either side of the driveway, wired with subtle lighting. This feature, seen in some nearby homes, provides both visual appeal and practical illumination, guiding visitors and adding a touch of sophistication.
- **Driveway Paving:** Finally, a major practical upgrade involves getting the driveway professionally paved, ensuring a smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing surface for years to come.
The Portico Perfection: A Grand Welcome (0% Complete)

The portico serves as the initial covered entry to our home, and we envision it as a welcoming and stylish transition space. Its current state, unfortunately, requires significant attention to bring it up to our desired standard.
- **Portico Repainting:** The most pressing task is to repaint the entire portico structure. The existing paint is peeling extensively, detracting from the home’s entrance. A fresh coat of high-quality exterior paint will instantly elevate its appearance and provide much-needed protection.
- **Arched Ceiling Feature:** We’re particularly excited about transforming the currently low portico ceiling. Inspired by a house further down the street that boasts an elegant arched ceiling complemented by a gorgeous hanging lantern, we plan to replicate this design. An arched ceiling will add architectural interest, a sense of grandeur, and a more expansive feel to the entry space.
- **Styling & Lighting:** To complete the inviting atmosphere, we’ll introduce a few carefully selected planters to add greenery, a new and stylish doormat, and updated porch lighting. These elements will contribute to a polished and welcoming entryway.
- **Front Door Color:** The front door itself presents a delightful opportunity for a bold statement. While we are currently leaning towards a rich, sophisticated emerald green, we also harbor a long-standing affection for a classic, glossy red door. This decision will be one of the final, most exciting touches to the portico area.
The Garage Transformation: Functionality Meets Style (0% Complete)

Our garage is destined to be far more than just a place to park cars. We envision it as a highly functional, well-organized space that seamlessly integrates workshop capabilities with smart storage solutions. This comprehensive renovation will tackle both its exterior presentation and interior utility.
- **Garage Door Enhancement:** The existing garage doors will receive a fresh repaint to match the home’s updated exterior palette. To further elevate their appearance and add character, we plan to install some tasteful decorative hardware, beefing up their visual presence.
- **Pergola Addition:** Above the double garage doors, we’re excited to add a charming pergola. This architectural feature will not only introduce visual interest but also provide a framework for climbing vines, creating a softening, natural element that integrates the garage more harmoniously with the landscape.
- **Interior Workshop & Storage:** The interior of the garage is a blank canvas ripe for transformation. Our primary goal is to finish the walls with drywall, effectively creating a dedicated workshop area on one side. The perimeter will be optimized for storage, incorporating practical solutions like pegboards for tools, sturdy shelving for paint supplies, and other DIY essentials.
- **Kitchen Cabinet Repurpose:** Should we find that our existing kitchen cabinets cannot be salvaged for the main kitchen makeover due to damage (they currently have dings and splintered spots), they will find a new purpose here. Repurposing them in the garage will provide excellent, robust storage for various items, extending their lifespan and reducing waste.
- **Garage-to-Kitchen Steps:** The four steps leading from the garage to the kitchen are in need of a serious upgrade. We’re weighing options: simply removing the old carpeting and painting them for a quick refresh, or undertaking a complete rebuild for enhanced durability and aesthetics.
- **Scrap Wood Storage:** To combat the perpetual challenge of scrap wood clutter, we’ll construct a custom box on casters. This mobile storage solution will help us keep lumber organized and easily accessible, preventing it from spreading across the garage floor.
- **Locker Storage Idea:** We’re toying with the creative idea of acquiring old lockers, repainting them in fun, vibrant colors, and potentially removing some doors to create open shelving units. This could provide unique and practical storage for various items, drawing inspiration from designs like these.
- **Utility Sink Installation:** A long-standing wish for our workshop area is the addition of plumbing for a utility sink. This would be invaluable for cleanup tasks, providing a dedicated space for washing tools and hands without tracking grime into the house.
The Foyer First Impression: Welcoming & Functional (0% Complete)

The foyer is the welcoming heart of our home, and our plans for this space focus on maximizing its potential for both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. We aim to create a bright, open, and organized entry point that flows seamlessly into the rest of the house.
- **Staircase Restoration:** The existing old carpet on the wood stairs is slated for removal. This will reveal the original wood beneath, which we plan to restore and finish, bringing back its inherent beauty and creating a more elegant ascent.
- **Trim and Baluster Transformation:** Following the overall home theme, all the outdated blue trim in the foyer, including the stair balusters, will be repainted. A fresh, modern color will significantly brighten the space and align it with our new aesthetic.
- **Wall Refresh:** The existing wallpaper will be removed, and the walls will be repainted in a clean, inviting hue, instantly modernizing the foyer’s appearance.
- **Opening Up the Flow:** To enhance the open concept and improve flow, we intend to remove the doors that currently block the connection between the foyer and the kitchen. This strategic removal will also unveil the beautiful view out the back windows, which we envision will eventually be transformed into elegant French doors.
- **Stair Gates & Runner (Future Consideration):** Depending on how we settle in and live in the space, we might consider adding gates to the stairs for safety, particularly with little ones. We’re also exploring options for a stair runner – perhaps a durable seagrass or a vibrant Dash & Albert design – to add comfort and style.
- **Lighting Upgrade:** The old foyer light fixture is due for an upgrade. We’re deliberating between painting the existing one to give it new life or replacing it entirely with a more contemporary and efficient option.
- **Tile Assessment:** The existing tile floor in the foyer will be carefully assessed. Replacement will only occur if it proves un-salvageable, as there are a few areas that are quite worn and beaten up.
- **Craft & Toy Closet:** A fantastic opportunity presents itself with two closets in the foyer. Since only one is truly needed for coats, we plan to convert the deeper closet into a dedicated craft and toy storage area. This “Claraphernalia” closet will feature an abundance of shelves, bins, and compartments to keep everything neatly organized and easily accessible.
The Half Bathroom Refresh: A Charming Powder Room (0% Complete)

Despite its small size, the half bathroom offers a unique opportunity to infuse personality and modern functionality. Our goal is to transform this space into a charming and stylish powder room that guests will appreciate.
- **Wallpaper & Trim Removal:** The first order of business is to strip away the existing wallpaper and repaint all the blue trim, including the door. This instantly refreshes the space and prepares it for a new aesthetic.
- **Hardware & Wall Paint:** We’ll upgrade the door hardware and hinges to modern, cohesive finishes. The walls will then be painted in a fresh, inviting color that complements our design choices.
- **Vanity & Mirror Upgrade:** A key feature will be replacing the current vanity with a more stylish and functional unit. Paired with this, we’ll install a new mirror, ensuring it’s larger and positioned higher. John, for instance, can currently only see up to his shoulders, so improved ergonomics is a must!
- **Lighting & Flooring:** Upgrading the lighting fixture will dramatically improve the ambiance and functionality of the space. The tile floor will be assessed, with replacement considered only if it proves un-salvageable due to wear and tear.
- **Wallpaper Reconsideration:** Here’s a surprising twist in a house full of old wallpaper: we’re actually contemplating adding some cool new wallpaper! Since there’s no tub or shower, this is a perfect spot for a bold design statement. We’re exploring options like grass cloth for texture, or charming patterns similar to this or this. It could be a really fun and unexpected design element!
The Dining Room Refresh: Elegant Entertaining (0% Complete)
Our vision for the dining room is to create an elegant and inviting space perfect for entertaining and family meals. This will involve restoring its classic features while infusing modern touches.
- **Wood Floor Restoration:** The beautiful wood floors will undergo a thorough cleaning and re-polying process to bring back their original luster and protect them for years to come.
- **Built-in Upgrade:** The existing built-ins are charming but will be upgraded. We’re considering removing their scrolly tops for a cleaner look, potentially building them up to the ceiling for a grander presence, and painting them a crisp white to brighten the room.
- **Trim, Wallpaper & Walls:** All of the blue trim will be repainted, and the old wallpaper will be removed, followed by repainting the walls in a sophisticated and complementary color palette.
- **Lighting & Curtains:** The current lighting fixture will be upgraded to a more elegant and functional piece, setting the mood for dining. We’ll also select new curtains that enhance the room’s aesthetic and provide appropriate light control and privacy.
- **Furnishing & Decor:** Finally, we’ll furnish the space with a beautiful dining set, consider adding a rug to define the area and add warmth, and adorn the walls with carefully chosen art that reflects our personal style.
The Living Room Transformation: Cozy & Contemporary (0% Complete)

The living room is envisioned as a cozy yet contemporary retreat, a space where we can relax, entertain, and enjoy family time. This ambitious makeover focuses on brightening the room, enhancing its architectural features, and integrating modern conveniences.
- **Flooring & Walls:** We’ll begin by cleaning and re-polying the wood floors to restore their natural beauty. The bright pink walls will be primed and painted in a more subdued and inviting hue, setting a calm foundation for the room.
- **Curtains & Woodwork:** The existing curtains will be removed to maximize natural light and simplify the windows. We absolutely adore the thick woodwork that wraps around the bottom half of the room’s walls and believe it will be absolutely gorgeous once primed and painted a crisp white, adding architectural definition.
- **Fireplace Revitalization (Phase One):** In the initial phase of lightening up the room, we’ll paint the brick fireplace wall. We fondly remember how much we loved the transformation of our first house’s den after we cozied it up with paint. This will instantly brighten the focal point of the room.
- **Fireplace Upgrade (Phase Two):** As phase two, once we’ve saved up, we plan to retile the fireplace surround, perhaps with an elegant option like this tile, and install gas logs for convenience and warmth. Alternatively, we’re considering drywalling the fireplace wall entirely and adding a stylish stone lip like this, offering a more contemporary aesthetic.
- **Enhanced Lighting:** To achieve even and ample illumination throughout the room, we’ll add more can lights. Currently, there are only three near the fireplace, which creates uneven lighting.
- **Coffered Ceiling:** A truly transformative project involves converting the existing overhead beams into a sophisticated coffered ceiling, similar to designs found here. This will add depth, character, and a touch of luxury to the living space.
- **Integrated TV Cabinet:** We aim to build or find a substantial, built-in-looking cabinet to house the TV, ideally positioned across from the window. This will ensure the television is seamlessly integrated into the room’s design, avoiding an eyesore. We’ll finalize this decision as the space evolves.
The Office Oasis: Productivity & Inspiration (0% Complete)

Our home office is envisioned as a dedicated space for productivity and inspiration, designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This requires a complete refresh from floor to ceiling.
- **Initial Declutter & Refinish:** We’ll start by removing the existing curtains to maximize natural light. The wood floors will then be meticulously cleaned and re-polied, restoring their warmth and beauty.
- **Paint Palette:** The walls, trim, and ceiling will all be freshly painted in a calming and conducive color scheme, creating a serene backdrop for work.
- **Double Desk Work Area:** A key feature will be the integration of a double desk work area. We’re exploring layouts, potentially extending from the middle of either the left or right wall, specifically between the windows, to maximize natural light and provide ample workspace for two.
- **Smart Storage Solutions:** Effective storage is crucial for an organized office. We plan to bring in various elements like bookcases and file cabinets. We’re particularly excited about the potential for cool built-in storage solutions around the bay window, which could offer both practicality and an elegant design statement.
- **Window Treatments & Art:** New curtains or window treatments will be added to provide privacy and light control while enhancing the room’s aesthetic. We’ll also focus on hanging inspiring art and creating a “brainstorm-zone” on the walls, perhaps with a bulletin board or a chalkboard for creative thinking.
- **Greenery:** To introduce life and freshness, we’ll add two large potted plants in front of the two front-facing windows. Options include vibrant lemon trees or elegant fiddle leaf figs.
The Kitchen Core: A Modern Culinary Hub (0% Complete)

The kitchen is undeniably the heart of any home, and our plans for this space are nothing short of a complete transformation into a modern, highly functional, and aesthetically pleasing culinary hub. This will be our most extensive renovation project.
- **Initial Strip-Down:** We’ll begin by removing the old wallpaper and repainting the walls, and the dated curtains will be taken down to brighten the space.
- **French Door Conversion:** A pivotal change involves converting the giant triple window into elegant French doors that will lead out onto the deck, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and flooding the kitchen with natural light.
- **Open Concept & Built-ins:** To foster an open, airy feel, we plan to open the wall between the kitchen and the living room. On either side of this newly opened space, we’ll add beautiful built-ins, similar to the dining room built-ins in our current house, providing both storage and architectural interest.
- **Woodwork & Full Renovation:** The woodwork wrapping around the bottom half of the room’s walls will be primed and painted to integrate with the new design. This leads into a full kitchen renovation, addressing every outdated element: replacing the faux brick linoleum, damaged cabinets, laminate counters, inadequate lighting, and old, broken appliances.
- **Heated Floors & Unified Tile (Potential):** We’re excited about the prospect of trying our hand at installing heated floors beneath some fresh, new tile. This luxurious feature might even extend into the foyer and hall bath if we find that their existing tiles are beyond salvage, creating a cohesive and comfortable flow.
- **Pantry Organization:** The pantry will be meticulously organized with pull-out drawers, bins, and containers to maximize storage and accessibility. We’re also considering painting the pantry door a fun, unexpected color or replacing it with frosted glass for a touch of modern elegance.
- **Command Center & Lighting:** We plan to amp up the “command center” area across from the future French doors, making it a highly organized and functional spot for daily tasks. New lighting is crucial, including a stylish window treatment and pendant over the sink, and a larger, updated light fixture over the eat-in area.
- **Drop Zone Solution:** We need to strategically figure out how to create a “drop zone” for coats, shoes, and bags, perhaps integrating it into the kitchen design or finding a smart solution within the garage.
- **Door Colors & Water Filter:** The new kitchen French doors and the door leading to the sunroom will receive a fresh coat of paint – we’re debating between classic black, chic charcoal, soft turquoise, or crisp white. Finally, installing a water filter under the sink is a practical necessity for clean drinking water.
The Sunroom Sanctuary: Open Air Living (0% Complete)

Our sunroom currently holds immense potential for an indoor-outdoor living experience, but its current state requires a dramatic overhaul. We envision transforming it into an open, covered porch, a true sanctuary for relaxation and enjoyment.
- **Initial Demolition & Odor Sealing:** The first step involves ripping up the old, malodorous carpet and padding. Crucially, we then need to effectively seal in any lingering smells from the concrete floor, ensuring that unpleasant odors don’t leech out indefinitely.
- **Flooring Phases:** As part of Phase 1, we plan to stain or paint the concrete floor for an immediate refresh. Eventually, in Phase 2, we’ll upgrade the floor with outdoor-safe stone tile, providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing surface.
- **Structural Transformation:** The broken base heater will be permanently removed. The most significant change will be converting the entire sunroom into an open, covered porch with new columns. Many of the existing sliders are faulty, and the posts are rotten, necessitating this comprehensive structural change. We’re envisioning something akin to the charming design seen here.
- **Outdoor Fireplace (Future):** Once the sunroom is opened up, we’re dreaming of building a brick outdoor fireplace adjacent to it, similar in concept to this, but with our unique twist. This would create an incredible outdoor living and entertaining space.
- **Beadboard Ceiling:** To add charm and a coastal feel, we plan to add beadboard to the ceiling and paint it a soft, serene blue.
Our Master Bedroom Sanctuary: Serene & Stylish (1% Complete)

Our master bedroom is envisioned as a tranquil and stylish sanctuary, a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. While a small step has been taken, much work remains to bring this vision to life.
- **Flooring Upgrade:** With the old carpeting successfully removed, our next step is the exciting installation of beautiful hardwood floors, bringing warmth, durability, and a classic aesthetic to this private space.
- **Paint Refresh:** All of the cream trim and doors will be repainted, along with the off-white ceilings and walls, to create a fresh, cohesive, and brighter palette for the room.
- **Integrated Built-ins:** A major design feature will be adding built-ins along the entire window wall. These will incorporate integrated window seats for cozy reading nooks, hidden storage compartments to maintain a clutter-free environment, and elegant display shelves framed with thick molding, adding both functionality and sophisticated design.
- **Ceiling Light Fixture:** Currently, there’s no ceiling light fixture, which we will rectify by installing a central fixture to provide ambient lighting and enhance the room’s character.
- **Textured Ceiling (Creative Touch):** To add a unique design element and a touch of unexpected charm, we might consider adding some textured wallpaper to the ceiling, just to spice things up.
- **Finishing Touches:** Finally, we’ll bring in art, select curtains to complement the new aesthetic, and install wood blinds on all windows. The latter is crucial, as this room gets incredibly sunny in the afternoon, requiring effective light control and privacy.
Our Master Bathroom Oasis: A Luxurious Remodel (0% Complete)

Our master bathroom is ripe for a complete overhaul, transforming it into a luxurious and highly functional oasis. The existing space, with its rough blue hex floor tile, is simply not cutting it. Our vision involves a significant expansion and modernization.
- **Complete Redo & Expansion:** We plan a complete redo of our bathroom. The goal is to expand the footprint by integrating the adjacent sink nook area, creating one cohesive, spacious environment. This will allow us to incorporate dream features like a freestanding soaker tub, a beautifully tiled walk-in shower, and a double sink vanity – all designed to create a spa-like experience. This project promises to be a lot of fun!
- **Window Privacy:** Addressing privacy for the existing window is essential. We’re considering options like frosting the glass for a permanent solution or installing elegant window treatments that offer both privacy and style.
Our Master Closet Organization: Custom Storage Solutions (0% Complete)

The master closet is an often-overlooked space, but for us, it’s an opportunity to create highly efficient and beautifully organized storage solutions. Our goal is to transform it into a functional and luxurious dressing area.
- **Paint & Lighting:** We’ll start by repainting all of the cream trim to brighten and unify the space. A new light fixture will be installed to provide ample illumination, making it easier to see and access clothing.
- **Custom Organization System:** The core of this project involves organizing, building out, and “pimping” the entire space. We envision a custom system of cabinetry with integrated drawers for smaller items, various shelves for folded clothing and accessories, and rods at different heights to accommodate a range of garments. This will ensure every item has its designated place, making daily routines smoother and more enjoyable.
Upstairs Hallway Enhancement: Flow & Function (1% Complete)

The upstairs hallway is a central thoroughfare, connecting all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Our plans for this long space focus on improving its aesthetics, functionality, and overall flow, creating a cohesive and inviting upper level.
- **Flooring & Lighting:** With the old carpeting removed, we are now ready to install beautiful hardwoods, which will bring continuity and elegance to the entire upstairs. The old hallway lights will be replaced, or potentially painted if salvageable, to provide brighter and more modern illumination.
- **Trim & Hardware Upgrade:** All the blue trim and doors will be repainted a glossy white, instantly updating the look and feel of the hallway. Simultaneously, we’ll replace all the old, bright brass hinges and door knobs. Many are rusted and corroded, making simple spray painting impractical, so new, cohesive hardware is essential for both function and aesthetics.
- **Linen Closet Transformation:** The existing hallway linen closet will be converted into a more functional and stylish built-in. We’re considering open shelves for display and easy access, or cabinets with shelves above, similar to organizational concepts like this, maximizing storage efficiency.
- **Smart Thermostat:** An exciting upgrade involves installing a Nest thermostat. We’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews about their efficiency and smart features, and John is particularly eager for this modern convenience.
- **Architectural Enhancements:** To add architectural detail and break up the length of the hallway, we plan to add crown molding. We’re also considering incorporating thick wood wainscoting, similar to what we have planned for the kitchen and living room, which would add a sophisticated layer of texture and visual interest.
Clara’s Room: A Big Girl’s Dream (1% Complete)

Clara’s room is being designed as a vibrant and functional space perfect for a growing “big girl.” Our plans aim to maximize storage, introduce playful elements, and create a truly personalized environment.
- **Flooring & Trim:** With the old carpeting now removed, our next step is to install beautiful hardwood floors, providing a durable and timeless foundation for her room. All the blue trim and doors will be repainted in a fresh, child-friendly palette.
- **Built-in Storage:** We envision an entire wall of built-ins somewhere in the room. This could take the form of bookcases beautifully surrounding the windows, offering both storage for books and toys, and a charming aesthetic.
- **Closet Nook Bench:** Clara’s deep, sloped-ceiling closet nook presents a unique opportunity. We plan to build a cozy bench seat within it, featuring beadboard on the ceiling and a fun, whimsical wallpaper on the back wall, creating a delightful hideaway.
- **Dresser Makeover:** Her big girl dresser will be primed and painted a vibrant color, and we’ll attach stylish leather pulls to give it a modern, personalized touch.
- **Finishing Touches:** We’ll add elegant crown molding to complete the room’s architectural detail. A crucial addition will be a ceiling light fixture – a common oversight in older homes, but essential for proper room illumination. Finally, window blinds, playful curtains, and art will be chosen to reflect Clara’s personality and create a truly magical space.
Spare Room / Possible Someday Nursery (1% Complete)

This spare room holds significant future potential, primarily as a possible nursery should baby #2 be on the way. For now, our focus is on foundational improvements that will make it a versatile and comfortable space.
- **Flooring & Paint:** The old carpeting has been removed, and we will proceed with installing hardwoods, ensuring a consistent and high-quality finish throughout the upstairs. All of the mauve trim and doors, along with the dingy ceilings and walls, will be repainted in a neutral, fresh palette, creating a clean slate.
- **Future-Proofing:** We’re deliberately holding off on major decorating decisions for this room until it has a definitive purpose. However, the foundational improvements ensure it’s ready for transformation into a beautiful nursery when the time comes.
- **Architectural Enhancements & Lighting:** We’ll add crown molding to enhance the room’s finish. A crucial functional addition will be a ceiling light fixture, addressing the current lack of overhead lighting.
- **Window Treatments:** To ensure versatility and comfort, we’ll install wood blinds for effective light blocking, complemented by curtains that will add softness and style once the room’s ultimate purpose is defined.
Guest Bedroom / Craft Room: Multi-functional & Inviting (1% Complete)

This room is a true multi-tasker, designed to serve as both a comfortable guest bedroom and a vibrant craft space. Its beautiful view and abundant light make it an ideal spot for creative endeavors.
- **Flooring & Trim:** With the old carpeting removed, we are now ready to install hardwoods, providing a clean and inviting base. All of the cream trim and doors will be repainted to unify the room’s aesthetic.
- **Multi-functional Furnishings:** We’ll bring in a bed for guests, alongside a dresser that can double as a desk or workstation, accommodating my sewing machine and crafting supplies. This setup ensures the room efficiently serves its dual purposes.
- **Craft & Gift Wrap Shelving:** The closet will be optimized with extensive shelving and bins, creating an organized haven for craft supplies, gift wrap, and other creative essentials.
- **Architectural Detail & Lighting:** Crown molding will be added to enhance the room’s finished look. Crucially, a ceiling light fixture will be installed, addressing the current absence of overhead lighting and providing essential illumination for both guests and crafting activities.
The Hall Bathroom: Complete Modernization (0% Complete)

The hall bathroom is in desperate need of a complete transformation. Its current state, characterized by stained and cracked old tile, and fixtures crusty enough to make even seasoned renovators wince, necessitates a full modernization. Our goal is to create a fresh, clean, and stylish bathroom for general use.
- **Complete Redo:** A complete redo is unequivocally in order for this space. Every element, from the flooring to the fixtures, will be replaced. We’re exploring various stylish tile options for the floor and shower surround, perhaps something striking like herringbone slate, classic marble, or elegant, extra-long rectangular tiles similar to this. This comprehensive renovation will ensure the bathroom is not only beautiful but also highly functional and durable.
Laundry Nook Nifty Upgrade: A Jewel Box Space (1% Complete)

Our laundry nook, though small, presents an exciting opportunity for a functional and visually delightful transformation. We envision creating a “fun little surprise jewel box” tucked away in the back of the hallway, a space that makes laundry less of a chore.
- **Flooring & Protection:** With the old carpeting removed, we will proceed with installing hardwoods, ensuring a consistent aesthetic with the rest of the upstairs. Crucially, the washer will be placed in a water-safe metal tray on the floor, providing essential leak protection.
- **Complete Nook Redo:** The entire nook will undergo a complete redo. This includes installing new doors to significantly improve noise control, upgrading to energy-star rated appliances for efficiency, and installing a new counter for a functional workspace. We’ll also add new cabinets, or perhaps reuse and refresh the existing ones if they are salvageable, maximizing storage.
- **Backsplash, Art & Lighting:** To truly make it a “jewel box,” we’ll add a stylish tile backsplash and incorporate some great art and lighting fixtures. These elements will elevate the space, making it both practical and aesthetically pleasing, adding a touch of unexpected charm to a utilitarian area.
Unfinished Storage Room: Future Entertainment Hub (0% Complete)

This awesomely large unfinished storage room currently serves a vital purpose for storing various household items. However, its long-term potential is far more exciting. While this is a project for much further down the line, we actively dream of transforming it into a fantastic finished space.
- **Future Vision: Movie & Bunk Room:** Our ultimate dream is to convert this into a dedicated movie room or a fun bunk room, especially ideal for older kids during sleepovers or family gatherings. This will be a significant undertaking, involving:
- **Adding Drywall:** Creating finished walls will be the first step in making the space habitable and aesthetically pleasing.
- **Installing Flooring:** Proper flooring will be laid, transforming the concrete into a comfortable surface suitable for a living space.
- **Integrating Lighting:** Adequate and atmospheric lighting will be installed to cater to its future use, whether for watching movies or reading.
- **Building Out Closets:** We’ll thoughtfully build out the existing closet areas, ensuring there’s still ample storage space under the eaves, maintaining practical utility.
- **Furnishing for Fun:** Finally, we’ll furnish the space with built-in beds for a bunk room concept, a large TV for entertainment, and a big, comfortable sectional for lounging and movie nights. Wahoo, indeed!
General Whole House Ideas: Smart Upgrades for Modern Living (0% Complete)
Beyond individual room renovations, we have a set of overarching goals for the entire house, focusing on efficiency, aesthetics, and long-term comfort. These are the thoughtful upgrades that will tie the whole home together and enhance our daily living experience.
- **LED Lighting Conversion:** A systematic effort will be made to slowly upgrade all light fixtures throughout the house to energy-efficient LEDs. This long-term project will significantly reduce our energy consumption and utility bills.
- **Switchplate & Outlet Refresh:** One of those small details that makes a big impact is replacing all the outdated gold, wallpapered, or off-white switchplates and outlets. There are approximately ten million of these to tend to, but updating them will provide a clean, modern, and cohesive look across every room.
- **Quality Home Textiles & Decor:** Over time, we aspire to upgrade to nicer frames, drapes, sheets, and curtain rods. While these items are not cheap, investing in quality textiles and decor is part of our journey to become “grown-ups” and curate a home that reflects refined taste and comfort – even if it takes us a decade or so to get there!
The Back Deck Refresh: Outdoor Living & Entertainment (0% Complete)

Our back deck is poised to become an extension of our indoor living space, transformed into an inviting area for outdoor relaxation, dining, and entertaining. This project encompasses both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
- **Deck Maintenance:** We’ll begin by power washing and staining/sealing the entire deck to refresh its appearance and protect the wood. Simultaneously, any rotten or warped boards will be replaced to ensure safety and structural soundness.
- **Tree Removal (Critical):** A major and somewhat sad task involves removing the giant oak tree that is growing dangerously close to the house. The home inspection revealed that its roots could severely damage the house’s foundation if not addressed promptly. While it’s a cute tree, its proximity poses a significant long-term risk.
- **Pergola Construction:** To add architectural interest and provide much-needed shade, we plan to build a pergola off the back of the house. This will be strategically positioned square to the sunroom, aligning with where the future kitchen French doors will open, creating a cohesive and shaded outdoor zone.
- **Outdoor Furniture:** We’re excited about building our own outdoor furniture, including a sturdy table for al fresco dining and comfortable lounge chairs, enhancing the deck’s functionality as a gathering space.
The Backyard Oasis: Creating an Outdoor Haven (0% Complete)

Our backyard is a blank canvas awaiting transformation into a lush, private, and fun-filled outdoor oasis for both adults and children. This ambitious landscaping project will unfold in phases, addressing everything from pathways to play areas.
- **Ground Prep & Seeding:** We’ll start by removing the random slate paths scattered throughout the backyard, then aerate and seed the area to create a smooth, expansive lawn.
- **Strategic Transplanting:** To optimize the layout and visual appeal, a few existing plantings will be strategically transplanted, such as the pretty peony bushes currently “in the middle of nowhere” (not pictured), to more prominent and suitable locations.
- **Privacy Plantings (Phase 1 & 2):** In Phase 1, we’ll plant holly bushes to create essential privacy from neighboring houses, utilizing our wooded lot to its fullest potential. Phase 2 will involve adding even more privacy plantings, including tiered trees, various bushes, and colorful flowers, creating a truly secluded and beautiful environment.
- **Children’s Play Area:** For Clara, we envision building a fun wooden playhouse, thoughtfully tucked back into the woods, providing a magical hideaway. We’ll also build a classic swing set for endless outdoor enjoyment.
- **Edible Garden & Planters:** We’re excited to cultivate an edible garden, growing our own fresh produce. This will be complemented by building some raised planters and incorporating additional hardscaping elements to define different zones within the yard.
- **Patio Area:** A dedicated patio area will be added somewhere around the deck, offering another versatile space for relaxation and entertaining.
- **Creative Hideaway:** A fun, family project involves building a wooden lean-to in a corner of the backyard with Clara. We’ll then plant climbing vines to grow up and around it, creating a cool, natural hideaway for imaginative play.
- **AC Unit Cover:** To improve the aesthetics of the backyard, we’ll build an air conditioner cover using wooden boards, similar to designs like this, discreetly concealing the unit.
- **Walkway Redo (Future Tour):** The old, cracked concrete walkway between the garage and the deck (not pictured) is also slated for a redo. We’ll be whipping up an outdoor video tour for you guys soon, which should help show a lot more than a few pictures can, including this walkway.
In summary, our aspirations for this new house are grand, reflecting a deep passion for home transformation. We’ve come to realize that we are hopelessly in love with the intricate process of upgrading a house. This journey, filled with discovery and creativity, truly excites us more than the final destination itself. As we’ve explored previously, this philosophy of “DIYing vs. living in your home and enjoying it” (more on that here) is central to our approach. We’ve also learned the invaluable lesson of tackling projects one day, one task, one small victory at a time. This prevents overwhelming ourselves and keeps the joy alive in every step of the process. And seriously, is there anything more satisfying than confidently crossing things off a giant, meticulously crafted list we’ve affectionately dubbed “Listy McListerson”? (NO. The answer is emphatically NO!)
Regarding the method to our “project order,” there isn’t a rigid one. Our process is largely driven by mood and inspiration, allowing us to jump from room to room or task to task. Of course, any safety concerns or extreme urgency will immediately elevate a project to the top of the list. This flexible approach helps us maintain excitement and prevents us from feeling forced into tackling a complex project like gutting a kitchen or bathroom before we’re truly ready. We prefer to live in a house for a while, understanding how we naturally use and move through spaces before committing to significant overhauls. This ensures our renovations are not just beautiful, but also perfectly tailored to our lifestyle.
As of this very moment, with our move-in date just weeks away, we’re eagerly eyeing a few priority tasks we’d love to complete before officially settling in (a dream list, perhaps, but we’re optimists!):
- Repainting all the trim and doors on the second floor – we’re hoping to share the satisfying details by Wednesday!
- Laying our new hardwood floors in the four bedrooms and the upstairs hallway, setting a beautiful foundation.
- Removing all the extraneous, flow-blocking doors on the first floor, specifically those between the foyer and kitchen, dining room and kitchen, and living room and kitchen, to open up the space.
- Bidding farewell to the floral curtains in the office, dining room, kitchen, and living room for a fresh start.
So, those are the projects currently “on deck” for us. We’d love to hear from you: How do you organize your house to-do lists? Do you rely on your phone, trusty Post-it notes, or a detailed spreadsheet? What’s your method for deciding what to tackle next? Is there a particular rhyme or reason to your renovation madness? Share your tips and experiences!
