I’ll start this post with a confession that might seem a little unusual: for a brief period, I harbored a deep resentment towards our kitchen porch after we finished its transformation last fall. “Resentment” is undoubtedly a strong word to associate with a part of one’s home, but I promise, the reasons behind it will become clear as we delve deeper into this story. The good news, however, is that those negative feelings are long gone. In fact, this space has not only shed its initial shadows but has blossomed into one of the most cherished and functional areas of our home, especially following a series of thoughtful and strategic additions we’ve made over the past year since its initial reveal.

Such is my affection for this transformed outdoor living space that, as I type these very words, I am seated right here on the porch, fully immersed in its charm. Consider it an act of method blogging – I am living the experience I’m writing about, ensuring every detail and feeling is authentically conveyed.

The Comprehensive Kitchen Porch Renovation: From Underutilized to Essential
To fully appreciate the scope of this transformation, it’s helpful to revisit its origins. You can find a more extensive history of this porch’s previous iterations in our dedicated posts, but for a quick overview: this area was once a porch directly off our bedroom, distinguished by an unusual eight glass doors leading outside – an architectural quirk, to say the least, for a single room. Our initial step in reclaiming this space involved closing off two of those doors that opened onto this specific porch, a move that ingeniously created a much-needed solid wall for our bed inside the bedroom. Following this, we undertook a pivotal change: swapping a black window for a new door, establishing a seamless and highly functional connection between this outdoor area and our kitchen. This strategic redesign was a game-changer for our home, enhancing both its utility and our daily lives.

The journey from an “unused bedroom porch” to a “heavily utilized kitchen porch” has truly redefined convenience and flow within our home. This update didn’t just add aesthetic appeal; it created a direct, practical pathway from our driveway straight into the kitchen, making mundane tasks like unloading groceries infinitely easier and quicker. It’s a small change with a surprisingly significant impact on our routines, streamlining daily activities and contributing to a more efficient household.

As you can observe in the images, we now conveniently park our car just beyond the gate adjacent to this porch. While our front yard retains ample parking for guests, who are welcomed by our charming front porch and direct entry into the sitting area, this newly designated side yard parking spot has become invaluable for us. It offers a significantly more direct and effortless route into the house. Furthermore, the porch’s covered design provides a welcome refuge, ensuring a dry sprint indoors even when returning home amidst a sudden downpour, adding another layer of practical convenience to our daily lives.

Beyond its utility for groceries and weather protection, we deeply appreciate the seamless access this setup provides to our outdoor grill. Positioned just steps away from the kitchen’s primary cooking area, it facilitates effortless outdoor entertaining and meal preparation, truly extending our kitchen’s functionality into the fresh air. This close proximity ensures that grilling becomes an integral, enjoyable part of our culinary routine, rather than a separate, cumbersome endeavor.

To truly grasp the magnitude of this transformation, it’s worth a glance at what our kitchen looked like when we first acquired the house. The contrast is stark, underscoring the dramatic evolution from its initial state to the vibrant, functional heart of our home it is today.

While words can sometimes fall short in describing the profound impact of this new setup, the phrase “game-changer” consistently comes to mind. It’s more than just an aesthetic upgrade; it’s a fundamental enhancement to our daily living, making life significantly more convenient and enjoyable. This thoughtful renovation has seamlessly integrated outdoor living with indoor functionality, creating a space that truly serves our family’s needs.
Enhanced Functionality: How We Mastered Our Outdoor Space
To provide you with a clearer perspective on the functional enhancements we’ve implemented over the past year and to better understand the seamless flow of this space, I invite you to watch a brief video tour that Sherry filmed. It offers a dynamic look at the updates and showcases some of the added functionalities in action. (And yes, keep an eye out for my quick cameo!)

Strategic Outdoor Storage: Introducing the Versatile Cabinets
As highlighted in the video, one of the most significant and transformative improvements since our last update has been the integration of these two remarkable outdoor cabinets. These units are specifically engineered for exterior use, designed to withstand the elements while providing maximum utility. They fit perfectly into a spot previously occupied by a charming but less functional wicker console table that Sherry had salvaged from a curbside find. While the wicker table added a touch of visual appeal, it offered approximately 89% less practical function, lacking any concealed storage and featuring a somewhat rickety woven top that proved impractical for daily use. The new cabinets, by contrast, address both our aesthetic desires and our pressing need for robust outdoor storage solutions.

The primary benefit these outdoor cabinets deliver is providing incredibly convenient shoe storage. Given that our smaller home lacks a dedicated mudroom or a spacious foyer, having not one, but two accessible locations for our footwear has proven incredibly helpful. In addition to these new outdoor units, we also utilize a cube cabinet with baskets near our front door for indoor shoe storage. This dual system effectively addresses our needs, keeping our living spaces tidy and organized while minimizing the dirt and sand tracked indoors from our active outdoor lifestyle.

I understand that the concept of storing shoes outdoors might initially raise concerns about bugs, unpleasant odors, or moisture. However, after several months of continuous use, including through some of the hottest and most humid periods, we’ve encountered zero issues in these regards. Sherry often jokes that the local insects prefer our lush, plant-filled yard to our footwear, and there’s a practical truth to it. These cabinets are thoughtfully designed with tiny, built-in slivers for airflow, which is crucial for outdoor furniture. This constant, subtle ventilation is likely why our shoes remain fresh, and the cabinets themselves show no signs of swelling, warping, or deterioration. For a more detailed look at these features and to see the contents of the other cabinet, I highly recommend watching the video tour Sherry created, which I shared earlier in this post.
This outdoor shoe storage serves as an invaluable bonus, complementing our existing indoor storage. More importantly, it plays a significant role in minimizing the amount of sand, dirt, and outdoor debris that gets carried into our home. It’s a simple, yet highly effective, strategy for maintaining cleanliness and order in a busy household.

Beyond their primary function as outdoor shoe storage, these robust cabinets provide invaluable bonus counter space. This additional surface has proven particularly useful as a dedicated prep area whenever we’re grilling, allowing us to organize ingredients and tools conveniently outside (you might have spotted my case of grill tools neatly stored above the shoes). The wood-framed concrete counter has demonstrated impressive durability and weatherproof resilience, standing up to the elements without issue so far.

What makes these cabinets truly special, beyond their exceptional functionality, is how seamlessly they integrate into the existing aesthetic of our home. They appear as a natural outdoor extension of the cabinets inside our kitchen, effectively lengthening our kitchen counter by an impressive five and a half feet. And because the porch is thoughtfully covered, this extended workspace remains fully usable and enjoyable throughout the entire year, regardless of the weather. It truly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living, creating a cohesive and expanded functional zone.

Cultivating Tranquility: The Addition of a Calming Water Feature
Perhaps “water feature” sounds a bit grand, but we’ve genuinely come to appreciate the soothing sounds of running water near our pool so much that we were inspired to incorporate a similar element on this side of the house. The gentle murmur of water has a remarkable ability to create a sense of calm and enhance the overall ambiance of an outdoor space, turning it into a true backyard oasis.

With this in mind, we invested in this self-contained water fountain. It’s an incredibly user-friendly, all-in-one kit; literally, all you do is place the decorative ball on top, fill it with water, and plug it in. The ease of setup was a major selling point. We are particularly fond of its green patina, which beautifully complements our existing copper rain chains, creating a cohesive visual theme. And, as you can hear in the video, the sound it produces is genuinely delightful – a subtle, continuous whisper that adds a layer of natural tranquility to our kitchen porch environment. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in the sensory experience of the space.

While it’s currently powered by a convenient outlet on the porch, we are contemplating relocating it further into the yard at some point. This would likely involve addressing some electrical considerations to ensure it can be safely and permanently installed in a more expansive garden setting. But for now, its present placement serves its purpose perfectly, enhancing the immediate vicinity of our kitchen porch with its calming presence.
Crafting a Personal Oasis: Our New Hammock Zone
Sherry recently shared on Instagram that we significantly expanded our backyard pool area by strategically shifting the fence line further back – a project we’ll detail in a full post once it’s more settled. This expansion created a much larger pool yard, which in turn allowed us to relocate our firepit to this new, larger zone. The benefit? More integrated entertaining opportunities, where kids can swim while adults gather around the fire. It’s a setup we’ve enjoyed at friends’ houses, so we knew it would be a welcome addition to our own backyard retreat.
The relocation of the firepit, however, left a perfectly sized, previously occupied spot in our side yard – just beyond the kitchen porch – begging for a new purpose. Our kids had expressed excitement about having a hammock, and serendipitously, a hammock fit perfectly into the old firepit spot. This happy accident led to the creation of a brand-new relaxation zone, perfectly shaded and ready for leisure.

In fact, we initially purchased two hammocks during our quest for the perfect one. The fabric hammock we ordered first proved to be quite uncomfortable for me, personally. Its design didn’t allow for much back arching, leading to a somewhat flat, splayed-out feeling. We promptly returned it and opted for a much more affordable, yet surprisingly superior, traditional rope hammock instead. This choice was a resounding success; it has quickly become a beloved reading spot for everyone in the family, and for me, it’s an unrivaled napping sanctuary. The only minor drawback is that I sometimes feel like I’m betraying our beloved outdoor daybed, which previously held the title of my go-to spot for such leisurely activities. This new hammock zone truly encapsulates the essence of outdoor relaxation and has quickly become an essential part of our backyard retreat.

This hammock zone has been an absolute delight, particularly during these recent weeks of glorious fall weather. We’ve been experiencing minimal humidity, yet temperatures consistently hover in the comfortable 70s and 80s each day. Even when the weather leans towards the warmer side, the hammock benefits from excellent natural shade provided by the surrounding trees, ensuring a cool and inviting spot for relaxation. It’s truly a testament to creating micro-climates within your garden design to maximize comfort and enjoyment throughout the seasons.

I realize this might sound like I’m gushing, perhaps even a little boastful, but honestly, we are just profoundly happy with how this entire side of our house has come together. It’s transformed from an underutilized space into a vibrant, cohesive, and deeply loved area. Next on our home improvement agenda is establishing more permanent walkways, and, as you might imagine, Sherry is relentlessly focused on continuing to evolve this area into an even more lush, plant-filled haven, seizing every opportunity near a plant store!
The Unspoken Grief: Why This Porch Held Bittersweet Memories
Okay, it’s time to return to my initial confession about the complex emotions I felt toward this space. My initial resentment truly had nothing to do with the physical porch itself, but rather with the cruel timing of life’s events. A significant part of our motivation for embarking on this extensive update – fencing the side yard, installing the new door, and completely redoing the porch – was for our beloved 15-year-old dog, Burger. We desperately wanted to create a safe, fenced area where he could easily go outside, bask in the sun, and handle his bathroom needs without constant supervision. Prior to this renovation, Burger’s “activities” always required using the front door, which meant navigating an unfenced yard directly by the street, demanding our undivided attention, and often, an umbrella during inclement weather.

Indeed, I often felt like the Fonzworth Bentley to Burger’s P Diddy, especially during those rainy excursions. Or perhaps, more aptly, his Pee Diddy. This renovation, while undoubtedly beneficial for us human Petersiks, was undeniably a passion project primarily dedicated to Burger’s comfort and independence in his golden years. It was a testament to our deep love for him, aimed at improving his quality of life.
Tragically, Burger passed away less than a week after the porch renovation was completed. While we are eternally grateful that he got to enjoy it, even for a few precious days (you can see his joy in the photo below), his sudden absence cast a long shadow. Somewhere amidst the raw grief of his passing, I found myself, at times, inexplicably hating this porch. I don’t know if I was angry at us for not completing it sooner, or at the universe for the incredibly cruel timing of it all. I am fully aware that these feelings were misdirected and illogical, but that is the most honest way I can explain the profound emotional turmoil I experienced at the time. This space, intended as a symbol of care and joy, became intertwined with a deep sense of loss.

It’s now been over a year since Burger’s passing, and thankfully, my feelings have found their rightful place. While we still love and miss Burger every single day, it’s become much easier to fully appreciate how truly vital and functional this space has become for our family. Every time we step out there, we’re reminded of its myriad benefits: the convenient kitchen access, the invaluable added storage, the expansive extra counter space, the strategically placed grill, and the quicker path to the car, among others. We also find immense comfort in watching our new dog, Penny, thoroughly enjoy the space. It’s incredibly heartwarming to see her utilize it in all the ways we had so lovingly envisioned for Burger. Especially poignant is when she “hangs out” with the little metal chihuahua we’ve placed in the corner as a permanent tribute to Burger, ensuring his spirit remains a cherished part of our outdoor sanctuary.

I sincerely hope that sharing this deeper, more emotional layer doesn’t detract from your appreciation of what is, at its heart, a simple porch transformation. On the contrary, it feels deeply gratifying to acknowledge how hard-working and essential this area has become for our family, and to reflect on the immense joy we all derive from it now, even if it took me some time to fully reconcile my feelings. This entire side of our house was largely neglected and underutilized when we first moved in, so we are incredibly proud of its evolution and the vibrant role it now plays in our daily lives. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my hammock is calling, and I have a very important nap to finish.
