Dark Wood Kitchen Island with White Cabinets: Stylish Design Ideas

We could hardly believe our eyes when we saw this remarkable kitchen transformation. Here’s a note from Gord about the renovation:

I wanted to share a quick update about the kitchen renovation we just finished. The project involved relocating windows and doors, taking down walls, enclosing the odd railing that separated the family room, and completely reconfiguring the kitchen layout. We essentially stripped the room back to the studs and rebuilt it from scratch. Although moving electrical and plumbing added cost, it was worth every penny — we effectively doubled our kitchen’s usable space. We completed much of the work ourselves and managed to stay within our budget. It was a major effort, but the result is fantastic. Before, the kitchen was small, awkward, and dated. By removing the dividing wall and rethinking the layout, we now have an open, bright space where we spend most of our time. Hope you enjoy the photos. Sincerely, Gord

It’s easy to be amazed by the before-and-after photos. The original layout felt cramped and awkward, but the new design opens up sightlines, improves flow, and brings in more natural light. Removing the partition and repositioning fixtures created room for a generous island, more storage, and better movement between cooking, prep, and dining areas. The result is a functional, welcoming kitchen that looks far larger than before.

Gord’s renovation demonstrates how thoughtful planning and selective structural changes can dramatically increase both the utility and the aesthetic of a space. Taking on some of the work personally helped keep costs down, while investing in moving utilities paid off in long-term usability. The finished room balances modern touches with practical design—ample counter space, clear sightlines, and a comfortable area for family and guests to gather.

If you’re considering your own remodel, this project is a great reminder: assessing the layout and being willing to change structural elements, when feasible, can yield dramatic improvements. Thoughtful choices about light, storage, and circulation make even modest square footage feel expansive. Thanks to Gord for sharing the transformation—this kitchen is a striking example of what careful planning and hard work can achieve.
