Transforming Spaces: Our Cozy Guest Bedroom Makeover (Formerly the Dining Room!)
The exhilarating journey of home renovation often leads to incredibly rewarding transformations. Today, we’re thrilled to share the completion of our third bedroom – affectionately known as our second guest bedroom – just in the nick of time! With a lively group of guests arriving this Friday night, the pressure was on, and we’re delighted to report mission accomplished. This space holds a special significance as it was formerly our dining room, a testament to how adaptable and dynamic home layouts can be. We embarked on this conversion by cleverly closing off the doorway that once connected it to the kitchen, a decision that has proven to be incredibly practical and seamless since we relocated our main dining area into our spacious living room.
The beauty of repurposing an existing room often lies in discovering hidden advantages. In our case, the old dining room already boasted a built-in closet, which significantly streamlined the conversion process. This meant we didn’t have to undertake the extensive and often costly task of constructing new storage solutions, saving us both time and resources. Beyond the structural closure of the doorway – a task expertly handled by a professional to ensure structural integrity and a flawless finish, as detailed in our earlier post about the doorway being closed – our work was largely cosmetic. We simply needed to remove the outdated chair rail that skirted the walls and replace the existing light fixture to align with the room’s new purpose and aesthetic. It was a surprisingly smooth transition, transforming a formal eating area into a welcoming sleeping quarter.
From Formal Dining to Functional Retreat: The Room’s Evolution
To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s take a brief trip down memory lane. Below is a photograph of the room in its previous incarnation as a dining room. You can almost envision the meals shared and memories made within these walls, adorned with its characteristic chair rail and traditional lighting.

The conversion from a dining room to a guest bedroom was a strategic decision driven by our evolving lifestyle and a desire to maximize our home’s functionality. With our open-plan living room easily accommodating a dining table, the dedicated dining room became an underutilized space. Recognizing the constant need for comfortable guest accommodations, especially for impromptu visits and larger gatherings, we saw an incredible opportunity. The existing closet was a massive bonus, making the structural changes minimal. The main task involved creating a solid wall where the kitchen doorway once stood, ensuring privacy and soundproofing for the new bedroom. This professional intervention not only guaranteed structural soundness but also provided a smooth canvas for our design aspirations.
Crafting Comfort: Designing a Welcoming Guest Haven
And now, for the reveal of the burgeoning cozy new bedroom! While still a work in progress, the foundational elements are firmly in place, radiating an inviting warmth. We believe that a guest bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place where visitors can unwind and feel completely at home. Our design philosophy centered on creating a tranquil environment that promotes relaxation and comfort, making every stay a memorable one.

The aesthetic transformation began with a crucial element: color. We bid farewell to any potentially jarring or overly vibrant hues – because, let’s be honest, nothing says insomnia quite like turquoise walls in a bedroom. Instead, we opted for a soothing coat of tan paint, specifically Glidden’s Water Chestnut. This choice was deliberate, aiming to create a serene backdrop that promotes calmness and warmth. Paint is one of the most impactful and budget-friendly ways to dramatically alter a room’s mood, and this soft, earthy tone perfectly sets the stage for a restful night’s sleep. The subtle elegance of Water Chestnut also provides a versatile foundation for future decor additions, allowing accessories to pop without overwhelming the senses.
Smart Furniture Choices for Small Spaces and Guest Comfort
Furnishing a guest room, especially one that needs to be both functional and inviting, requires thoughtful selection. Our primary furniture piece is a plush new daybed from West Elm. This was a fantastic find, especially considering we snagged it on sale for a mere $299 with free shipping – you truly have to love those post-holiday sales! A daybed is an ingenious choice for a guest room, particularly in a moderately sized space like this one. During the day, it serves as comfortable seating, perfect for reading or simply lounging. At night, it effortlessly transforms into a cozy bed, offering a practical solution for accommodating overnight guests without the bulk of a traditional bed frame. Its versatility makes it an indispensable asset in optimizing the room’s utility.
Complementing the daybed, we introduced a charming and equally functional storage ottoman from Target, priced at an affordable $59. This piece is a double threat: it provides a convenient surface for guests to place items like books or a cup of tea, and more importantly, it offers discreet storage. In any guest room, maximizing storage is key, and this ottoman is perfect for stowing away extra blankets, pillows, or even toiletries, keeping the space tidy and clutter-free. Its compact size and clean design ensure it integrates seamlessly into the room’s aesthetic without encroaching on valuable floor space. The combination of the daybed and ottoman creates a welcoming nook, perfect for both daytime relaxation and nighttime slumber.

Blending Old and New: Personal Touches and Future Aspirations
To infuse the room with character and make it feel truly lived-in, we strategically incorporated some existing pieces from around our home. On the opposite side of the room, we placed one of our beloved slipper chairs in the corner, creating an inviting reading nook. Paired with a reading light we already owned, this corner offers guests a quiet spot to relax, read, or simply enjoy a moment of solitude. Above it, we hung a striking black and white print, which adds a touch of modern sophistication and visual interest against the warm tan walls. These additions demonstrate how thoughtfully integrating pieces you already own can personalize a space while adhering to a budget.
While the room is now functional and ready for our Friday guests, we’re not quite done. Home decor is a continuous journey, and we embrace the “work in progress” philosophy. We still need to acquire some fresh sheets for the daybed – a crucial step for guest comfort, as it’s currently “naked under that comforter… the shame!” This minor detail highlights the practical necessities that often follow the larger design decisions. Beyond the essentials, we’re eagerly anticipating adding more decorative elements to truly elevate the space.
The Art of Accessorizing: Adding “Oomph” and Personality
Our next phase of decorating will focus on injecting more personality and “oomph” into the room through carefully chosen accessories. We plan to hunt for an array of fun pillows, playing with different textures, patterns, and colors to make the daybed even more inviting and luxurious. Decorative pillows are an excellent way to introduce pops of color and softness, instantly upgrading the perceived comfort of a bed or seating area. Additionally, we’ll be on the lookout for unique wall art that complements the room’s tranquil vibe while adding visual depth. A gallery wall, a large statement piece, or a thoughtfully curated collection of smaller prints can completely transform a wall, turning it into a focal point. Other accessories, such as a cozy throw blanket draped over the daybed, a small plant for a touch of greenery, or a scented candle on a bedside table, will contribute to the overall ambiance, making the room feel more curated and complete.
Our goal is to create a guest room that not only provides a comfortable place to sleep but also offers a pleasant and memorable experience for our visitors. By focusing on layered textures, warm lighting, and functional decor, we aim to make this formerly formal dining room a true home away from home. The transformation has been incredibly satisfying, seeing an underutilized space evolve into a vibrant, functional, and beautiful part of our home. It’s a reminder that with a bit of vision and effort, any room can be reimagined to better suit your lifestyle and bring joy to those who share your space.

This project underscores our commitment to creating a home that is not only beautiful but also highly functional and welcoming for everyone who steps through our doors. The journey from a formal dining room to a cozy guest retreat has been an inspiring one, proving that sometimes, the most innovative solutions come from rethinking what you already have.
