Designing Your Digital Stage

The global shift towards remote work and virtual connections has transformed the way we perceive and interact with our personal spaces. Suddenly, our homes, once private sanctuaries, are displayed on screens for colleagues, clients, friends, and even strangers to scrutinize. This unprecedented boom in video conferencing, especially through platforms like Zoom, has introduced a new dimension to home decor and personal presentation. What does your meticulously (or hastily) arranged Zoom background truly communicate about you? Are you the minimalist guru, the avid reader, the plant parent, or perhaps the one whose background needs a little… love? We’ve all been there, strategizing just how much effort we’ll put into altering our backgrounds to ensure nothing unexpected, embarrassing, or simply messy makes an appearance during that important call. Beyond the virtual stage, life continues to unfold, and sometimes, a seemingly ordinary family trip can trigger extraordinary decisions. We recently realized, upon reflection, that a significant family vacation earlier this year played a pivotal, almost subconscious role in our monumental decision to relocate to Florida. Join us as we unpack this profound connection, along with a peek at the intriguing, shiny object currently gracing our kitchen counter. And just for good measure, Sherry bravely (or perhaps foolishly) relives a rather mortifying story from her days in New York City – one that she may never, ever live down.

What’s New: A Transformative Journey to Florida, Inspired by Costa Rica

Life has a funny way of guiding us towards our next big adventure, often through experiences we initially perceive as mere vacations. For us, a family trip to Costa Rica this past January wasn’t just a picturesque getaway; it was a profound catalyst for a life-altering decision. We’d been contemplating a move, dreaming of new horizons, but it was the immersive beauty and relaxed pace of Costa Rica that subtly, yet powerfully, solidified our vision for a future in Florida. The lush landscapes, the serene atmosphere, and the vibrant local culture resonated with something deep within us, planting seeds of inspiration that would soon blossom into definitive plans. We often found ourselves referencing the photos and memories from this incredible trip, particularly as we envisioned the aesthetics and ambiance of our future home, especially a dream pool in Florida. What we didn’t fully grasp until recently was the extent to which the entire journey, not just specific visuals, had deeply influenced our decision to embrace a new chapter.

Lush, tropical Airbnb in Costa Rica, inspiring a Florida pool design
  • This stunning image captures just one of the incredible Airbnbs we were fortunate enough to experience during our unforgettable family trip to Costa Rica. The architecture, the natural integration, and the overall tranquility of this space became a constant point of reference and inspiration. It wasn’t merely a place to stay; it was a living mood board for the relaxed, inviting vibe we envisioned for our future pool and outdoor living areas in Florida. We wanted to recreate that sense of seamless indoor-outdoor living, the feeling of being truly connected to nature, right in our own backyard.
  • For those planning a similar adventure or simply curious about our Costa Rican escapades, you can find a wealth of additional information. Our comprehensive dedicated post details everything from invaluable tips for traveling with kids in this tropical paradise to exclusive video tours of both charming Airbnbs we called home. Discover our favorite local spots, travel hacks, and how we navigated the vibrant culture of Costa Rica as a family.
  • During our travels, we were particularly touched by the story of an American family who had made the bold move to Costa Rica to operate a remarkable butterfly sanctuary. Their passion for nature and their commitment to a more intentional lifestyle left a lasting impression. This very family was also in the process of constructing an absolutely breathtaking treehouse Airbnb, a testament to their creativity and integration with the environment, which you can glimpse below. The incredibly hospitable mother, who gracefully split her time between Costa Rica and the US, is pictured below in a visor, warmly guiding us through their inspiring world.

  • The Costa Rica trip also served as an unexpected, yet perfect, “test drive” for our evolving desire to downsize. The smaller, more intentional living spaces of the Airbnbs resonated deeply with our aspiration for a simpler lifestyle. This experience strongly reinforced the concepts we discussed in Episode #171, where we explored four effective ways to “test drive” downsizing, including the strategic use of smaller Airbnbs. Living comfortably and happily in a more compact environment during our vacation unequivocally solidified our inclination to move to a smaller, more manageable house, proving that less space can indeed mean more freedom and focus.

Crafting the Perfect Digital Backdrop: Decorating for Zoom Success

In this new era of constant video calls, our homes have taken on an unexpected role: they are now our digital backdrops, silent communicators in every virtual meeting. The phenomenon of the “Zoom background” has evolved from a novelty to an essential aspect of our professional and social lives, influencing how others perceive us and, often, how we feel about ourselves during calls. While we certainly recognize there’s always room to elevate our own Zoom background game, we’re proud to report a significant improvement in our current “home office” setup. The lighting, a critical element often overlooked, is now far superior to our previous office. In our old space, we literally appeared as silhouettes during calls due to a severe lack of frontal light, largely because we often connected from my large-screened desktop computer, as you can see in the rather dim image below. Good lighting isn’t just about looking good; it’s about projecting professionalism, engaging effectively, and avoiding the dreaded “dungeon” look that can distract from your message.

  • We could definitely still up our Zoom background game, but at least the lighting in our current “home office” is better than in our last office when we had zero light on our faces (literally, we were silhouettes) because we often made calls from my big-screened desktop computer (seen below).

  • The fascination with virtual backgrounds has even spawned cultural phenomena like the “Room Rater” Twitter account. This hilariously insightful account, which someone forwarded to us, has gained immense popularity for its witty, tongue-in-cheek critiques and ratings of people’s Zoom backgrounds. It’s an entertaining feed, but also serves as a fantastic, albeit unconventional, guide to what works and what doesn’t in terms of virtual presentation. You can follow their often brutal, yet always humorous, assessments at @ratemyskyperoom. Their feed provides a candid look at everything from cluttered bookshelves to strategically placed art, and it’s a great way to learn by example (and sometimes, by cautionary tale).
  • For those seeking more constructive and elegant advice, we highly recommend this insightful article from Veranda. It offers sophisticated styling tips specifically tailored to enhance your video conference background. Beyond just tidying up, Veranda provides actionable advice on incorporating elements like thoughtful artwork, subtle greenery, proper furniture placement, and balanced lighting to create a professional, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing backdrop. These tips can transform a bland corner into a compelling visual statement, ensuring your virtual presence is as polished as your in-person one.
  • We’re genuinely curious about your experiences! As promised, we’ve created a straightforward survey where you can candidly share the steps you’ve taken – or perhaps haven’t taken – to improve your video conference backgrounds. Whether you’ve invested in a ring light, rearranged your entire office, or simply tossed a few dirty clothes out of frame, we want to hear your honest answers! Your insights will help us understand the broader trends and challenges of this new digital etiquette.

Your participation in our survey is incredibly valuable, providing us with a snapshot of how people are adapting their personal spaces for the demands of constant online interaction. It helps us understand the common struggles and creative solutions our community is employing to present their best virtual selves. We appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your insights into the evolving world of remote aesthetics.

Our Latest Obsessions: “We’re Digging” into Essential Home Finds

Sometimes, the most functional items in our homes can become unexpected focal points, sparking curiosity and conversation. That’s exactly what happened with one particular “big shiny object” that has found a permanent home on our Florida kitchen counter. Eagle-eyed readers and listeners quickly spotted it in one of our recent photos shared in the post about our new Florida kitchen. We’re always on the lookout for products that genuinely enhance our daily lives, blending seamlessly into our home while offering significant utility. These are the items that make tasks easier, improve our well-being, or simply bring a little more joy and efficiency to our routines. Here are some of our latest and greatest finds that we’re absolutely “digging” right now:

Berkey water filter on a kitchen counter in a modern Florida kitchen
  • The “big shiny object” in question is none other than our Berkey water filter. This robust and efficient filtration system has become an indispensable part of our kitchen, providing us with consistently clean, great-tasting water. It’s more than just a filter; it’s an investment in healthier hydration and a commitment to reducing plastic waste from bottled water. Its prominent placement in our Florida kitchen quickly caught attention, proving that functional pieces can indeed be design statements. We love the peace of mind it offers, knowing our drinking water is purified without relying on complex installations or constant replacements.
  • While the Berkey itself is fantastic, we quickly realized that its height could be a minor inconvenience for filling taller water bottles. To solve this, we snagged this ingenious stand specifically designed for it. This simple addition elevates the Berkey, creating ample clearance beneath the spigot, which makes filling even our largest water bottles and pitchers an effortless task. This small but mighty accessory has dramatically improved the user experience, and we highly, highly recommend it to any fellow Berkey owners looking for an easy upgrade in convenience.
  • Keeping a clean home, especially with an active family, requires tools that are both powerful and practical. Our latest obsession in this category is the Shark Wandvac. We were immediately drawn to its incredibly compact size and sleek design, which allows it to be stored discreetly without taking up much space. What truly sealed the deal, however, was the intelligent design of its charging base, which neatly houses all of its essential attachments. This means no more rummaging through drawers for specific nozzles; everything is organized and at arm’s reach, ready for quick clean-ups of crumbs, pet hair, or small spills.
  • The Shark Wandvac has proven to be a superb companion to our trusty cordless Shark stick vacuum, which has been a workhorse in our home for several years. While the stick vacuum handles larger areas and deeper cleans with ease, the Wandvac excels at immediate, targeted messes, preventing them from escalating. Together, this dynamic duo forms a comprehensive and efficient cleaning system that keeps our home tidy with minimal effort, embodying our philosophy of finding smart solutions for everyday challenges.
