Introducing the Dual Kitchen Designs: A Tale of Two Tastes
The image above showcases the stunning kitchen on the right side of our duplex, featuring a captivating blue tile backsplash paired with warm wood cabinets. You might recall glimpses of this transformation from our previous posts, where we detailed the Ikea cabinet installation and the intricate process of tiling the backsplashes. For this grand reveal, however, we’ll first journey to the left side of the duplex, where a contrasting yet equally charming aesthetic awaits: the kitchen with vibrant pink tile and sleek blue cabinets, visible in the photo below.

From Neglected Spaces to Dream Kitchens: The Transformation Story
To truly appreciate the “after,” let’s rewind to 2017 when we first acquired this duplex. What is now this vibrant kitchen was a far cry from its current glory. The view from the living room into this space reveals hints of its former life – notice that distinctive orange trim through the doorway?

The original (or at least, the previous) kitchen was awkwardly tucked into what used to be a side porch, positioned to the left of the orange-trimmed window you see above. This placement never felt quite right, lacking both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Now, let’s fast forward to a comparative “after” shot, mirroring the view from two photos ago. A monumental improvement was achieved by significantly widening the doorway and adding an elegant transom. This design choice was pivotal, seamlessly connecting these two spaces and maximizing the flow of natural light, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. As an added bonus, our striking tiled feature wall is now beautifully visible from the moment you step through the front door, offering a captivating first impression.

The space that now houses our thoughtfully designed kitchen was, prior to our intervention, something akin to a dining room – or so we surmise. Its identity was somewhat ambiguous, highlighted by the curious presence of an old, inexplicable fridge floating in its center. However, the generous proportions of this room clearly signaled its potential, practically begging to be reimagined as the heart of the home. The two-toned trim in earlier pictures, in hindsight, seems to have been whispering promises of a grander future for this very space.

Here’s a similar perspective of this area today, showcasing its remarkable transformation. We strategically raised the base of the window, a design decision that allowed for the seamless installation of continuous cabinetry along that entire wall. Furthermore, we integrated discreet pocket doors, a practical feature that enables the laundry area to be neatly closed off. This is especially beneficial for guests, ensuring that any laundry noise doesn’t interfere with the tranquility of those cooking, dining, or simply relaxing and watching TV in the main living spaces.

The Art of the Accent Wall: Planked Paneling
As we previously shared in our backsplash post, we deliberately chose a different treatment for the stove wall. The decision stemmed from a visual experiment: continuing the patterned tile onto this second wall felt overwhelming and chaotic, diminishing the impact of the main feature. Instead, we opted for a subtle, yet highly practical, solution that offers easy maintenance and cleanability. While the accent tile could technically have graced the stove wall, we prioritized the back wall, which is prominently visible from the front door and features a beautifully centered window, as the undeniable star of the show. The side wall was then cast as a supporting character, designed to complement rather than compete.
Our “subtle yet wipeable solution” came in the form of horizontal paneling, often referred to as planking or faux shiplap (distinguishing it from real shiplap, which interlocks). We enthusiastically jumped on this design trend after years of admiring its integration into Shea McGee’s signature beachy/modern home designs, and equally loving Chris & Julia’s TV wall in their family room. Our resounding verdict? What took us so long to embrace this versatile design element?! (And yes, we’re eagerly awaiting our imaginary Fixer Upper merit badge).

A detailed photo tutorial on how we achieved this look will be coming soon, but in essence, it involved cutting thin pieces of plywood into planks, meticulously nailing them to the wall with small spacers to create precise gaps, and then applying a durable, easy-to-wipe semi-gloss paint. We color-matched this paint precisely to the cabinets, ensuring a harmonious and cohesive aesthetic where everything blends seamlessly. Our goal was to create a surface that is significantly more durable and stain-proof than plain painted drywall, much like how many homeowners utilize beadboard backsplashes in their kitchens. The best part? This stylish and practical upgrade was both incredibly inexpensive and surprisingly simple to execute.

Seamless Appliances & Smart Choices for Rental Living
Turning our attention to the appliances, you’ll observe our deliberate choices in blending functionality with aesthetics. We selected a sleek stainless steel slide-in range and refrigerator to maintain a modern, cohesive look. However, for the microwave, we strategically chose a white countertop model. This clever decision allows it to effortlessly blend into the white planked wall behind it, ensuring an uncluttered and expansive feel on the countertop. Every appliance was selected with both guest convenience and long-term durability in mind.

The Integrated Exhaust Hood: A Blend of Form and Function
Many of you have expressed curiosity about the exhaust hood situated above the range, and we’re happy to share the details. We opted for one of Ikea’s ingenious range hoods precisely because we envisioned a completely built-in, cabinetry-style aesthetic. The hood itself is simply an insert, which Ikea conveniently provides along with all the necessary materials and clear instructions for seamless integration into a standard Ikea cabinet. This allowed us to maintain the clean lines and continuous look we desired.
The sole custom consideration was the venting mechanism. Due to the central firewall requirement inherent in a duplex, external venting was not an option. Therefore, we chose Ikea’s alternative: adding charcoal filters that efficiently clean and recirculate the air. This explains the subtle, tiny gap we intentionally left above the cabinet, rather than extending crown molding to the ceiling. The charcoal filter effectively traps grease and odors at the base of the hood, while the purified air gently escapes through that discreet crack at the top, ensuring optimal air quality within the kitchen.

Refrigerator & Dishwasher: Practicality Meets Design
For the refrigerator, we prioritized reliability and a clean aesthetic over unnecessary features. We selected a well-regarded, top-freezer model that, while not strictly counter-depth, seamlessly integrates into the kitchen thanks to a custom-built side panel. This thoughtful detail ensures it appears nicely built-in and unobtrusive. A key decision was to forgo models with ice makers or water dispensers. Our personal experience in Richmond has taught us that these features can be prone to breakage or leakage, particularly during power outages – a concern we wanted to eliminate entirely in a vacation rental that might be vacant during the off-season. This seemingly minor choice significantly minimizes potential maintenance issues. For our renters, we’ll ensure ice is always stocked in the freezer, and a Brita filter will be provided in the fridge for chilled, filtered water.

If you’ve been wondering about the dishwasher’s whereabouts, prepare to be delighted: we proudly present our very first built-in, cabinet-fronted dishwasher! This was a significant design aspiration for us, as we were determined to maintain the uninterrupted flow of cabinetry along the main focal wall. Our fingers were crossed that this integration would prove successful, and indeed, it exceeded our expectations. Our skilled plumber handled the dishwasher installation, while we personally took on the task of attaching the cabinet panel and hardware. This DIY step, surprisingly, was not difficult at all. It required careful measuring, but the provided paper template was invaluable in eliminating guesswork, making the entire process remarkably straightforward.

Custom Floating Shelves & Integrated Waste Solutions
Adjacent to the dishwasher, on the far end of that striking back wall, we’ve incorporated built-in trash cans. Ikea’s customizable kitchen system allowed us to perfectly match their appearance to the other three-drawer cabinets in the room, albeit with a clever twist: the bottom two sections actually comprise one large, convenient pull-out bin. This thoughtful integration ensures both seamless aesthetics and practical waste management.
The floating shelves are another newly revealed feature, and a future post will offer a detailed tutorial on their construction – including the nerve-wracking process of drilling through tile without incident! We custom-built these shelves to perfectly fit the space, largely following the same technique we employed for the floating shelves in our bonus room. However, these new shelves are notably thicker and more heavy-duty, engineered to confidently support an array of bowls, mugs, and cups. The design ensures both durability and ample storage without compromising on style.

Sherry meticulously stained these particular shelves with Minwax’s “Special Walnut,” precisely the same color used for the hardwood floors throughout the entire house. This thoughtful detail creates a beautiful continuity and introduces a layer of warmth and a subtle, almost ‘original’ vibe that wonderfully contrasts with the sleek, modern new cabinets. It’s a design choice that marries new construction with timeless charm.

The Right Side: Blue Tile & Wood Cabinets
Now, let’s transition to the other side of the duplex – the one characterized by its refreshing green-blue doors throughout. While the kitchen layout here is an exact mirror image of its counterpart, flipped for symmetry, the finishes and color palette offer a distinctly different, yet equally appealing, aesthetic. For instance, this side boasts elegant brass hardware, the floating shelves feature a unique stain, and the cabinets and backsplash present a fresh combination, among other curated differences. This intentional variation ensures each side possesses its own unique character while maintaining the high standard of design and functionality.

This is what this particular side of the duplex looked like before its dramatic transformation, as viewed from the living room. That window in the very back, once an isolated feature, now elegantly sits above the sink, flooding the area with natural light and offering a serene view.

Once again, the strategic decision to widen that doorway and introduce a transom proved transformative, dramatically opening up this space. The kitchen window, in particular, captures some of the most beautiful light on the entire first floor. In person, you can truly appreciate the incredible sense of spaciousness and warmth that results from these rooms being so openly connected, fostering an inviting and expansive living experience.

This is the best “before” photograph we could salvage of the kitchen area itself. It seems we were so preoccupied documenting the former kitchen – which, as a reminder, is now the mudroom/laundry room – that we neglected to capture many compelling shots of this adjacent space. Essentially, it was a large, uninspired yellow room, inexplicably featuring a random fridge plopped in its center. Oh, and some faux greenery… which, I must admit, I’m not entirely knocking, as faux greenery has become something of a design love language for us these days. #Foreshadowing, indeed!

Here’s a contemporary view that mirrors the previous image. You’ll notice that we subtly adjusted, and slightly narrowed, the opening to what is now our mudroom/laundry room. This intentional modification, along with the installation of those clever pocket doors, was crucial for creating dedicated wall space, allowing the cabinetry to terminate neatly and functionally. It’s these thoughtful structural changes that enable both the aesthetic and practical success of the renovated kitchens.

Thoughtful Storage Solutions: Shelves & Cabinets
When discussing the design of our custom shelves, it’s worth highlighting that we intentionally crafted them to be 8 inches deep. This specific depth makes them too narrow for bulky items like large dinner plates or deep bowls. We understand that some individuals harbor reservations about open shelving, primarily due to concerns about dust accumulation. Therefore, we’ve thoughtfully housed most of the actual serving ware – including bowls, wine glasses, and plates – within the secure confines of the cabinets.
These open shelves serve a distinct purpose: they are the ideal home for smaller overflow items that are frequently accessed or often kept out on display, such as measuring cups, cutting boards, and tea mugs. Beyond functionality, they also provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase decorative elements like vases and plants, adding a touch of personalized charm to the kitchen. This dual approach ensures both practicality and aesthetic appeal, catering to diverse storage needs while enhancing the overall design.

We experienced a stroke of luck during the selection process: the pine lumber we sourced for these custom shelves proved to be remarkably similar in color to the Ikea cabinets we had chosen. This fortuitous match meant we didn’t need to stain them at all; instead, we simply applied a clear seal. The result is a beautiful resonance with the blonde cabinet color, creating an aesthetic that feels remarkably cohesive and intentional. While these photographs might not fully capture the uncanny resemblance, in person, the shelves and cabinets are so perfectly matched that they genuinely appear to have been purchased as a unified set, enhancing the kitchen’s refined appeal.

Regarding the contents of our cabinets, we’re planning an exciting “cabinet tour” video once everything is fully moved in and perfectly organized. Given that we ended up with a similar number of cabinets to our own beach house kitchen, we’ve decided to replicate many of the highly efficient organizational systems we use there. Plates and flatware will be conveniently located in the cabinet adjacent to the sink, ensuring easy access. The drawers flanking the stove will be dedicated to pots, pans, and other essential cooking tools and serving ware. Less frequently used items will find their home in the upper cabinets, and for ample dry goods storage, we’ve designated a pantry area within the adjoining mudroom/laundry room.

While the compact footprint of these kitchens might not accommodate every single gadget a “super chef” desires in a full-time residence, we’re confident that we’ve covered all the essential basics with remarkable efficiency – in fact, we even have three cabinets/drawers to spare! This extra space offers reassuring room for growth, should we discover any overlooked necessities. Rest assured, these kitchens are already abundantly stocked with a wide array of items, including ziplock bags, cooking oil, Pyrex dishes, a spaghetti strainer, cleaning supplies, a vegetable peeler, and even an ice cream scooper. Our aim is to provide a truly comprehensive and worry-free culinary experience for every guest, ensuring they have everything they need right at their fingertips.
