Duplex Backyard Transformation: A Seamless Blend of Historic Charm and Modern Functionality
Earlier this month, we peeled back the curtain on the incredible front porch makeover of our beloved duplex project, showcasing how a blend of thoughtful design and dedicated effort brought new life to its facade. Today, we’re thrilled to invite you around to the rear of the property, revealing the dramatic transformation of the back of the house. Prepare to be amazed as you witness the debut of our cherished diamond doors in all their glory, complemented by stylish metal awnings, newly constructed back steps, and even a peek at those much-anticipated outdoor showers. Covered by an extra-long metal awning for optimal privacy, these showers also contribute a significant “cute-factor” – because, let’s be honest, we’re currently having an awning moment!

While the focus today is firmly on the architectural rebirth of the duplex’s rear facade, it’s worth noting that a comprehensive backyard landscaping makeover is actively underway. As you read this, sheds, patios, and fences are taking shape, promising to elevate the outdoor living experience significantly. We feel incredibly fortunate to have captured these stunning photographs before the area reverted to its inevitable state of organized chaos. Otherwise, these images would be dominated by sawhorses, wheelbarrows, and other construction paraphernalia. Rest assured, once the final touches are applied to the hardscaping and softscaping, we will dedicate an entire post to the complete backyard transformation, replete with a gallery of inspiring photos. For now, let’s delve into the remarkable journey of the house’s backside and appreciate just how far it has come. The change is so profound, it’s almost unrecognizable.
From Dilapidated to Dreamy: The Dramatic Before & After of the Duplex’s Rear

To truly grasp the magnitude of this historic home renovation, let’s cast our minds back to the “before.” The image above starkly illustrates the condition of the duplex’s rear when we acquired it. It was a picture of neglect: rotten siding peeling off the walls, rickety railings that offered little safety, makeshift cinderblock steps, and an array of strange old vents and wires that served no modern purpose. The original HVAC systems were long inoperable, occupying the very spots where our luxurious outdoor showers now stand. Perhaps most strikingly, each side of the lower level featured awkward bump-outs where the old kitchens were once located. On one side, a truly bewildering setup included a toilet placed inexplicably next to the back door, completely devoid of any enclosing walls, just a few steps from the kitchen sink. This bizarre arrangement underscored the urgent need for a complete overhaul, not just a facelift, but a fundamental reimagining of space and function.
Strategic Structural Changes: Expanding Space and Modernizing Functionality
Addressing the numerous structural and aesthetic deficiencies was paramount, but one of the most impactful changes involved extending those existing lower-level bump-outs vertically to the second story. As keen followers of our initial floor planning posts may recall, this crucial modification required careful planning and, significantly, approval from the local historic review board. We successfully navigated this process, gaining permission to add these small second-level extensions. The strategic purpose behind this was to allow each rear bedroom to boast its own en suite bathroom, a modern amenity that significantly enhances the property’s appeal and functionality, especially for vacation rental design. This is why you’ll notice the window in that area is not full-sized; it’s a deliberate design choice dictated by the new bathroom layout and the need to maintain structural integrity and historic compliance.

The addition of these two new en-suite baths, combined with the two powder rooms thoughtfully tucked under each staircase, dramatically transformed the bathroom count. Each side of the duplex went from having just one full bath to a generous two and a half baths. This substantial increase in facilities not only modernizes the home but also significantly improves comfort and convenience for future guests, making the property far more attractive as a luxury vacation rental. Previously, one side technically had one full bath and a rather unorthodox kitchen toilet – a setup that definitely doesn’t count as a “bath and a quarter” in any conventional sense! The upgrade truly brings the duplex into the 21st century while respecting its historic roots.
Architectural Accents: Diamond Doors and Distinctive Details Elevate Exterior Design
As with any passion project, certain features stand out as personal favorites, especially those that infuse the property with extra architecture and character. The elegant corbels along the roofline, which seamlessly wrap around the front of the house, are a prime example of our commitment to consistent, period-appropriate detailing. However, the true stars of the show in the backyard are undeniably my precious diamond doors. I still recall the exhaustive search I undertook to hunt them down secondhand, driven by the strong desire to echo the beautiful diamond windows gracing the front of the house. This design continuity felt like the absolute perfect touch for the backyard, creating a cohesive and deliberate aesthetic that ties the entire property together.

While we were obligated to retain the original doors on the front facade due to historic preservation guidelines, the back of the house offered us creative freedom – and we seized the opportunity. The diamond doors are, without exaggeration, 100 times more charming and characterful than the bland, 90s-era metal doors that someone had installed at some point in the property’s history. By incorporating these unique doors, we not only extended the distinctive diamond pattern from the front windows to the rear, but we also applied the same strategy to our color palette. The back doors are painted in the identical serene mint color as the front shutters, Sherwin William’s Pale Patina. This deliberate repetition of design elements and colors throughout the exterior creates a harmonious and visually appealing flow, significantly enhancing the duplex’s overall curb appeal and distinct personality.
Designing for Longevity: Low-Maintenance Materials and Cohesive Style

Maintaining a consistent aesthetic was a guiding principle throughout this duplex renovation project. To that end, we utilized the same stylish lanterns on the back of the house as on the front, ensuring a cohesive and polished look from every angle. Beyond aesthetics, practicality and longevity were critical considerations. We made a conscious decision to invest a bit more upfront to construct the back porches, stairs, railings, and outdoor showers using high-quality, no-rot materials such as vinyl and Azek. This choice was informed by past experiences: after spending several arduous days last summer staining the wood side stairs and back stairs at our pink house, we vowed never to add that level of ongoing maintenance to our to-do lists again. The long-term cost in terms of time and money spent on upkeep for wood vastly surpasses the initial one-time upcharge for superior, maintenance-free alternatives.

Therefore, prioritizing lower maintenance and greater durability was an easy and non-negotiable choice for the duplex. We aimed for a “failsafe” design that would provide years of enjoyment without demanding constant attention – a stark contrast to past lessons learned. (Queue the dramatic soundtrack of me lamenting, “If I Could Turn Back Tahhhhhhm For The Beach House Steps!” but with a hopeful eye to the future). Fortunately, the front steps on each house are sturdy brick, which offers its own low-maintenance charm. This strategic investment in exterior durability ensures that the duplex will remain beautiful and functional for years to come, offering peace of mind to us as owners and maximum enjoyment for our guests.
Stylish Shade and Privacy: The Impact of Metal Awnings
The sleek awnings adorning the back of the duplex are actually readily available stock metal awnings that we conveniently purchased online. We opted for a sophisticated bronze color and a practical 36-inch depth, which provides ample shade and protection. Our initial plan involved just the two smaller awnings, each 44 inches wide, placed elegantly over the doors. However, a crucial realization prompted a design modification: it became apparent that the outdoor showers, though intended for privacy, were partially visible from the second-story windows above them. This prompted an immediate and necessary adjustment! We quickly added a larger, continuous awning that spans the entire shower area. What started as a privacy solution quickly evolved into a remarkable aesthetic win.

This extended awning now serves as a beautiful accent, providing a continuous architectural line across the entire back of the house. The presence of the showers, strategically positioned with this encompassing awning, transforms what might have felt like a “dented-in” space into a more dimensional and thoughtfully designed area. This unexpected enhancement underscores how practical needs can often lead to improved design aesthetics, creating a more visually appealing and functional exterior. The awnings not only offer shade and protection from the elements but also contribute significantly to the overall exterior design appeal and the sophisticated charm of the duplex.
Optimizing Outdoor Living: Flexible Spaces for Vacation Rental Guests
Considering the duplex is designed as two distinct vacation rental units, creating functional and flexible outdoor spaces was a top priority. To ensure privacy for separate bookings, we are installing a dividing fence that will demarcate the two yards. This fence will largely follow the central line where the outdoor showers meet, clearly defining each unit’s exclusive outdoor area. However, we also recognize that there will be instances where a single large family or a group of friends might rent both sides of the house. To accommodate this scenario, we’re integrating a large, six-foot gated area within the fence. This ingenious solution allows guests the flexibility to either throw open the gate and merge the two backyards into a larger communal space or keep them closed for complete privacy if the units are occupied by separate parties who prefer their own secluded retreat.

Interestingly, the original duplex backyard also featured a dividing fence, but it lacked the crucial flexibility of a large gate to connect the spaces. Our updated design significantly improves upon this, offering a much-appreciated feature for modern travelers. This thoughtful addition, along with the two new paver patios and convenient sheds we’re integrating, will create an unparalleled outdoor experience. The patios will provide ideal spots for al fresco dining and relaxation, while the sheds offer practical storage. This strategic planning for flexible outdoor spaces is central to our aim of maximizing guest satisfaction and making the duplex an even more desirable destination.

Looking at that old “before” picture above ignites an almost ridiculous level of excitement within me for the final completion of the backyard work and for everything to burst into vibrant green once more. Just imagine how lush the trees and the grass are! Even in its previous state, it’s astonishing how much inherent charm and beauty flowering trees and verdant green grass can add to any landscape. This vision of lushness fuels our anticipation for the coming weeks, promising an outdoor oasis that complements the stunning transformation of the house itself. The blend of new structures and revitalized nature will truly set this duplex apart.
Anticipating Summer: Completion, Landscaping, and Airbnb Launch
Our comprehensive yard makeover, encompassing everything from intricate landscaping and robust fencing to stylish patios, comfortable outdoor furniture, and functional sheds, is on track for completion within the next month or so. This means that eager renters will soon be able to fully enjoy this meticulously designed outdoor haven throughout the upcoming summer season. The question we frequently receive whenever we mention the duplex is about booking availability. We are delighted to announce that our goal is to have both units listed on Airbnb by next month, ready to welcome guests for weekly vacation stays this summer. You’ll definitely be among the first to know when booking officially opens, so keep an eye out for our announcement!

On a slightly envious note, I must confess my jealousy that the duplex outdoor shower stalls have been completed well in advance of our own at the pink house. We’ve been enjoying an open-air outdoor shower there since last year, but it still lacks any enclosing stall for coverage, making it, shall we say, a “zero privacy experience” for the time being. However, with the successful installation and thoughtful design of the duplex showers, our own privacy project at the pink house is hopefully not far behind! The duplex’s outdoor showers represent a luxurious and practical amenity, perfectly suited for a beach vacation rental, and one we are particularly proud of.
