Clara’s Second Birthday Bash: A Deep Dive into Our Delightful Worm-Themed Party!
As parents, we often find ourselves marveling at the unique fascinations of our little ones. While most toddlers might gravitate towards popular characters, princesses, or superheroes, our sweet Clara has always marched to the beat of her own drum. This year, for her highly anticipated second birthday, she surprised us all with a truly unconventional, yet utterly charming, party theme: worms! Yes, you read that that right. Forget monkeys, ice cream, firetrucks, or even the mailman – Clara’s heart belongs to the humble worm. This delightful quirk set the stage for an incredibly creative and memorable celebration that we’re thrilled to share with you.
The Genesis of a Wriggly Wonderland: Why Worms?
The journey to Clara’s worm-themed extravaganza began with her simple, undeniable love for these underground dwellers. We’d briefly hinted at her unusual choice in a previous post, but the depth of her affection truly shaped every aspect of our party planning. Her enthusiasm for worms transformed what could have been a standard second birthday into an opportunity for boundless imagination and DIY fun. With the theme firmly established, our first order of business was to lock down the logistics: a date (this Saturday the 12th, just two days shy of her actual birthday on the 14th) and a guest list comprising our closest family and friends – a joyful gathering of about 30 people, including ten lively kiddos under the age of four.
Crafting the Perfect Invitation: Setting the “Wormy” Tone
With the essentials sorted, we dove headfirst into what we consider the most exciting part of party planning: designing the invitations! Invitations are more than just a piece of paper; they’re the first glimpse guests get into the party’s spirit and a reflection of the theme. For Clara’s special day, we embarked on a creative marathon, developing three distinct versions before settling on the perfect one. Our initial attempt incorporated some adorable shots from her 22-month photoshoot. While we absolutely loved the charming shapes, the intricate fabric details, and that radiant smile, it somehow lacked the essential “worminess” we were aiming for.

Undeterred, we continued to experiment. Our second design, as you can see, exuded an undeniable abundance of worm-like charm:

While this version was undeniably cute and captured the worm spirit effectively, our creative juices were still flowing. We’re self-proclaimed design nerds, and since we only get to indulge in this particular passion once a year, we decided to push the boundaries further. This led us to our third, more graphic, and equally worm-centric alternative:

Indeed, the third time was the charm! We found ourselves absolutely enamored with these chevron worms – perhaps worms are the new chevron trend? While any of the options would have been fantastic (and we know some might even prefer the first or second design), there was just something irresistible about those three little worms inching their way onto the number two, with our smiley girl nestled in the middle, accompanied by the delightful promise that “there will be worms.” This design perfectly encapsulated the playful and unique spirit of Clara’s party, making it the clear winner.
Printing & Savings: A Smart Approach to Invitations
Once our perfect design was finalized, we ordered just enough invitations for our guest list. A quick search online for a Winkflash coupon code proved fruitful, saving us a notable $15.77 on the order. This small effort resulted in a significant discount, bringing the cost down substantially.

The final cost per invitation, including an envelope, came out to a very reasonable $1.58 ($28.54 for eighteen 5×7″ invites printed on matte card stock, not photo paper). This was a welcome saving from the original price of $2.19 per invite. We chose Winkflash based on our positive experience with them for last year’s invitations. Many printing services offer templates for folded cards, but finding completely blank, postcard-style options that allow you to upload your entire design without imposing frames or borders can be surprisingly challenging. Winkflash provided the flexibility we needed to truly bring our custom design to life.
And when they arrived? Pure delight! Winkflash consistently delivers excellent quality – no odd printing lines or a cheap feel. We were particularly pleased with the larger 5×7″ size and the thick, luxurious matte card stock. So, that’s probably more detail than you ever imagined wanting about a two-year-old’s party invitation, but we believe these small details make a big difference in creating a truly special event! Haha.

Digging Up Decorations: Bringing the Worm World to Life
Now, let’s talk about the party details – the fun stuff that transforms a space into a wormy wonderland! While we’ll be back with a full recap after this weekend’s festivities, we thought a sneak peek at our collected supplies might spark some inspiration, much like we shared last year’s preparations. Our “table o’ stuff” showcases a delightful mix of reused treasures and exciting new finds, all carefully selected to fit the unique worm theme.

Among our existing items, we have a charming yellow napkin dish, a fantastic $2 thrift store find from a few years back, and the beautiful fabric banner I lovingly sewed for Clara’s first birthday – we’re all about maximizing usage! We’ll also be re-using the runner I sewed, along with a paper one I crafted for that same party. A recent addition includes some adorable bird-themed napkins from Ikea, which we picked up last month. After all, birds do enjoy worms, right? These small touches add personality and a sense of continuity to our celebrations.
Of course, a new theme calls for new additions! Our recent haul includes worm-themed plates, delightful worm-ish candles, a selection of balloons and streamers, and some vibrant paper lanterns. These items were primarily sourced from Party City and Target, proving that you can find unique pieces even in mainstream stores if you keep an open mind and a creative eye for adaptation.
Notice the pink arrow in the top left corner of the image above? It’s pointing to a particularly exciting find: an ice tray we snagged at Ikea last month. Our vision? To create whimsical worm-shaped ice cubes! Alternatively, we could fill it with jello to make delightful, edible jello worms. This simple item has so much potential for adding a playful, thematic touch to our beverages or desserts.

Beyond the jello, our agenda includes inflating a mix of polka dot balloons and, to our immense surprise and delight, actual worm-shaped balloons! Finding genuine worm paraphernalia at Target and Party City is nearly impossible, so stumbling upon these special balloons felt like striking gold. These will undoubtedly be a standout decoration, bringing an extra layer of authenticity to our “wormy” celebration.
A Feast of “Wormy” Delights: Creative Food & Activity Ideas
The heart of any good party often lies in its activities and, of course, its food! For Clara’s worm-themed bash, our brainstorming session resulted in a wonderfully whimsical “brain dump” list of worm-related ideas. While we know we won’t get to everything, it’s always fun to explore the possibilities:
- Pipe Cleaner Worm Hunt: Crafting colorful pipe cleaner worms and hiding them outside for an exciting “worm hunt” for the little ones. This interactive game promises fun and exploration.
- Gummy Worm Grass Runner: Creating a vibrant “grass” table runner adorned with either gummy worms or plastic worms for a visually appealing and thematic centerpiece.
- Worm Crafts Station: Collecting paper towel rolls for some sort of imaginative worm craft project, encouraging creativity and hands-on fun.
- Streamer Worm Swags: Taping streamers in little swags across the living room beams or patio area to mimic the graceful movement of worms.
- Apple with a Worm Snack: Serving apples with a gummy worm peeking out, a classic and charmingly simple worm-themed treat.
- Worm Crudité: Cutting peppers, cucumbers, and cheese into long, worm-like sticks and serving them with a delicious dipping dressing – a fancy “worm crudité” for our sophisticated guests!
- Fruity Worm Skewers: Skewering grapes or other sliced fruits onto straws (a safer, less pokey alternative for tiny hands than traditional skewers).
- Worm Pizza: For the adults, regular pizza, but for the adventurous kids, we’ll add some cooked spaghetti noodles on top of their slices to create a fun “worm pizza.”
- Worm Dogs: Simple hot dogs, but dressed up with ketchup or mustard “eyes” and a smile to transform them into adorable “worm dogs.”
- “Dirt & Worms” Cupcakes: White frosted cupcakes generously sprinkled with crushed Oreo “dirt” and topped with a gummy worm. We considered “dirt cake” or “dirt pudding” in mason jars, but for a party with many 2-3 year olds, cupcakes are far less messy and easier to eat.
- Worm Jello: Plain jello, but with gummy worms suspended within, creating a delightful “jello mold” where fruit is replaced by worms.
It’s always exciting to brainstorm a multitude of ideas and then select the ones that are most feasible and impactful. We’re eager to see which “wormy” wonders make it to the final party!
Unforgettable Party Favors: A Wormy Farewell Gift
And now for the party favors – a component I loved so much that I assembled them a full week before the party! Call it a nerd alert, but the joy of creating these personalized gifts was simply too much to resist.

One of Clara’s absolute favorite outdoor activities is playing with her watering can, filling it with leaves, rocks, sticks – you name it! So, when we stumbled upon these adorable green watering cans at Ikea for a mere 99 cents each, we knew we had found the perfect base for our favors. We grabbed one for every child, hoping they’ll enjoy them as much as our little girl does. In the toy aisle, we then discovered tiny stuffed “worms” for 49 cents each! Okay, full disclosure, they were actually snakes, but with a quick snip of their pointy red tongues, voilà – instant, happy little worms! We also included a bottle of bubbles in each watering can, along with a bright orange or pink scoop from Target (50 cents each). To complete the look, brown tissue paper (our “dirt”) provided a cozy bed for the scoops and worms, tying the whole theme together beautifully. We’ve kept these favors hidden – I assembled them during Clara’s naptime and stashed them in the guest room – so we can’t wait to see her reaction when she realizes that every one of her friends gets their very own watering can, bubbles, scoop, and worm! It’s these thoughtful, personalized touches that truly make a party special.
Oh, and take a look at these fabulous candles we unearthed at Tar-jay (our affectionate nickname for Target). Perfectly wormy, wouldn’t you agree?

Our trips to Target often involve serendipitous finds! We thought it would be a great idea to grab a couple of outdoor balls for the kids to play with on the patio. Naturally, Clara picked out her two favorite colors: orange and pink. These vibrant hues are actually one of the reasons we incorporated these colors into other party elements, like her invitations and streamers, creating a cohesive and cheerful palette throughout the celebration.

Reflections on Party Planning and the Joys of Childhood
So, that’s the exciting scoop on our party planning journey! The basic gist is that I’m currently wishing we had purchased one more watering can, scoop, and stuffed snake worm so I could have one of my own. I’m totally 30 going on 2 when it comes to the sheer delight of these party favors!

Are you currently immersed in any party prep? We’d love to hear your tips for keeping celebrations simple, fun, and memorable! Our personal strategy generally involves ordering food – something inexpensive yet universally loved, like pizza – to avoid slaving over the stove all day. However, everyone has their own approach! My mom, for instance, absolutely loves to cook and would much rather prepare a feast for thirty people than bother with ready-made invitations. This just goes to show there’s truly more than one way to get your party on! We simply cannot wait to share the delightful pictures from this Saturday’s celebration with you all.
But wait, there’s more exciting news! We’re also in the process of building Clara something truly special for her actual birthday. Something big. Okay, I’ll spill the beans – it’s a dollhouse!!!!!!

We are incredibly excited to share the full breakdown of this ambitious project with you once it’s complete. As expected, we’re just getting started, so we anticipate working overtime to bring this dream dollhouse to life! And now, for the universally true, albeit trite, mom statement: Oh my gosh, how is my baby two already?! It feels like she was just turning one a mere three months ago. Time truly does fly when you’re watching your little ones grow and discover the wonders of the world, even the humble worm!
Psst – You know $herdog loves her some Eminem, Snoop, Dre, and Biggie, but the new Karmin CD is uh.mazing. Seriously. Anyone else in love? I’ve been “YouTube in love with them” for a while (since this) and adored when they were on Ellen. Their new songs make me want to finish that dollhouse double-time (while pausing for a few obligatory dance breaks).
