Dream Nursery Reveal: Crafting a Cheerful & Functional Sanctuary for Our Little One
The moment we’ve eagerly awaited is finally here – our nursery is complete! With just four short weeks remaining until our little beanette’s estimated arrival (though we secretly suspect she’ll take her sweet time), we’re overflowing with excitement to unveil the cheerful, functional, and deeply personal space we’ve created for her. This room has truly undergone an incredible transformation, evolving from a blank canvas into a vibrant haven. Join us as we explore every thoughtful detail of this labor of love.

And then there was the closet. Oh, that closet! It initially presented one of our biggest challenges, lacking in both storage capacity and organization potential. We knew it needed a complete overhaul to become the efficient storage hub every nursery demands.

Maximizing Every Inch: Smart Storage Solutions for a Small Nursery
Despite being the smallest room in our house at a cozy 8′ x 10.5′, we successfully injected a remarkable amount of storage. We leveraged clever solutions like a crib with a large built-in drawer, a generously sized double dresser (a fantastic Craigslist score for just $20!), an existing storage ottoman, and a side table ingeniously retrofitted with woven basket “drawers.” Furthermore, a padded bench with a spacious toy bin tucked underneath it (two more items we already owned) provided even more spots to neatly stash toys, clothes, books, and the myriad of other necessities that come with a new baby. The goal was to keep clutter at bay and ensure everything had its place, a true testament to efficient small-space design. And now, without further ado, prepare for the delightful, baby-tastic after photos!

Enchanting Accents: Thoughtful Details that Define the Space
A Glimmering Welcome: The Aqua Capiz Chandelier
We had an absolute blast hunting down incredible deals, and one of our favorite finds was this playful $50 aqua capiz chandelier from a local lighting outlet. Not only does its vibrant color perfectly complement the nursery’s palette, but it also casts enchanting, whimsical shadows on the ceiling – a detail we envision Baby P will adore as she gazes upwards from her crib.

Artistic Window Dressing: DIY No-Sew Curtains
Our commitment to DIY extended to the window treatments, where we crafted our own no-sew curtains using a cheerful printed fabric. This clever solution allowed us to achieve a much more balanced and grand aesthetic for a wall that originally featured a rather small, off-center window. We’re big believers in the power of “cheating windows” with strategically placed curtains to make them appear perfectly centered. It’s truly amazing what a set of high and wide fabric panels can do to transform a room’s proportions and visual appeal, bringing cohesion and warmth to the space.

Versatile & Charming: The Repurposed Side Table
Introducing the former side table from our guest bedroom, an original Target find, created an ideal spot for essentials like a glass of water, a reading lamp, and a selection of baby books. The most delightful coincidence was discovering that some woven baskets we already owned slipped perfectly into the side table’s open shelves, transforming them into two charming basket “drawers.” These provide even more discreet storage for books and toys, helping us keep the clutter factor to an absolute minimum. The woven texture and lack of harsh, pointy corners mean these baskets are safe and, we hope, will be easily accessible for Baby P to put away her own toys as she grows more mobile. Of course, when that time comes, our real plant on the table will be swapped for something less dirt-prone!

The Cozy Corner: A Nurturing Feeding & Reading Nook
We absolutely couldn’t forget about the super cozy, sink-in-able bucket chair that we snatched up for an incredible $20 at a local thrift store. Paired with an already-owned ottoman (which we topped with a homemade faux sheepskin rug for added texture and warmth), it forms a delightful little feeding and reading corner. This snug spot is not just for us; even our beloved Burger, the dog, wholeheartedly approves, deeming it the “bee’s knees” for comfort and relaxation.

Serenity by the Window: Natural Light and Eco-Friendly Touches
Placing the feeding chair next to the window allows us to fully appreciate the natural light streaming in throughout the day, offering a serene view of our lush green backyard. This view is occasionally enlivened by our playful chihuahua, Burger, on one of his intense bug-hunting expeditions – a charming distraction for both parents and baby! And isn’t that little wooden tree on the windowsill simply adorable? It’s one of many thoughtful baby gifts we received from friends and family. We particularly love that its makers, Plan Toys, are incredibly eco-conscious, using only the greenest materials and non-toxic dyes and glues, aligning perfectly with our desire for a safe and healthy environment for Baby P.

A Breath of Fresh Air: The Power of Color and Light
The soft aqua ceilings, painted in Mythic’s Adanna Aire (flat finish), juxtaposed with crisp white molding and the cheerful pear green walls (Mythic’s Autumn Bloom in eggshell), have utterly transformed this formerly tan-walled guest room into a dreamy, tranquil space for our little girl. You can read all about the mindful painting process here. We thoughtfully chose these colors not just for their aesthetic appeal but also because we envision our baby constantly gazing up at the ceiling from her crib. A sky-reminiscent aqua ceiling, rather than a plain old white one, adds an element of wonder and calm to her earliest visual experiences.

Functional Elegance: The Dresser, Changing Station, and DIY Creations
Here’s a shot of the fantastic $20 Craigslist double dresser that we completely refinished ourselves. This piece now offers six generously sized drawers, perfect for storing everything from diapering supplies to an array of tiny clothes, socks, bibs, and other pint-sized accessories. To enhance the functionality and charm of the changing area, we also crafted a whimsical wire and faux flower mobile to hang over the changing pad. Complementing these are the sturdy, DIY shelves built by my handy hubby, which together add kid-friendly function and artistic form to the entire wall.

You might have spotted a small basket to the right of the dresser in the photo above. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

This humble item is actually a budget-friendly Ikea basket, which we cleverly lined with leftover crib skirt fabric we already had on hand. Voila! An instant hamper for under $5. We love how its lighter woven texture seamlessly ties into the aesthetic of the basket “drawers” in our makeshift side table under the window, and even echoes the textured ottoman paired with our thrift store chair, creating a cohesive and stylish feel throughout the room.
Returning to the dresser for a moment, remember when we took the time to line the drawers? This simple project added a delightful splash of happiness to the space. Every time we slide them open, we’re greeted by a charming glimpse of all the tiny outfits and accessories awaiting Baby P. Honestly, is there anything cuter than baby shoes peeking out from a neatly lined drawer?

Here’s a closer shot of the captivating three-orb mobile that we crafted one evening while relaxing in front of the TV, all for less than $12. We adore how it gently sways above the changing pad, adding a serene and engaging visual element. We have our fingers crossed that this mobile will prove invaluable once our beanette becomes more wiggly, providing a much-needed distraction during hurried diaper changes.

And here’s a detailed view of those beautiful shelves that my incredibly handy man built with his own two hands (okay, with a little help from some power tools, too!). We particularly love that they are designed as long, skinny, wall-mounted boxes, which ingeniously prevents books from toppling down as they might on traditional open shelving. This design offers both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality, and we can easily switch out the books, frames, and toys to continuously reinvent that wall as our baby girl grows and her interests evolve.

Safety & Style: The Vintage-Inspired Fan
Understanding the importance of well-ventilated rooms with fans in helping mitigate scary things like SIDS, we invested in this charming, vintage-looking turquoise fan (by Deco Breeze in “sky”). It’s not only incredibly functional but also a beautiful addition to the room, blending seamlessly with our aqua and green palette. Plus, we greatly appreciate the peace of mind offered by its protective wire cage, ensuring tiny curious fingertips can’t fit through.

Closet Conquest: Transforming a Storage Challenge into a Tidy Triumph
Now, let’s swing over to that formerly sad little closet. We completely revitalized it by painting its interior the same soft aqua color as the ceiling, instantly brightening the space. We then hung a cheerful fabric curtain to introduce pattern and visual interest, replacing a traditional door to save space. Functionality was paramount, so we added a second hanging bar, along with an assortment of baskets, shelves, and boxes. These additions allowed us to store far more than we ever imagined possible within that tiny enclave, turning a major storage challenge into a triumph of organization. You can explore the entire closet transformation in detail here.

Perhaps I need to revise my earlier question, “Is there anything cuter than tiny baby shoes?” Because the answer just might be, “baby clothes!” We absolutely love how we were able to repurpose a hanging shoe organizer from Ikea into an ingenious caddy for everything from bibs and burp cloths to tiny leggings. It’s a brilliant, space-saving solution for keeping all those small essentials easily accessible and neatly organized within the newly transformed closet.

The Heart of the Room: Our Comforting Crib
Here’s a shot of our crib, thoughtfully tucked into the corner to preserve as much open rug space as possible for playtime as Baby P grows. We adore the crib we chose, specifically for its built-in drawer, which provides invaluable extra storage. Currently, both this drawer and the storage ottoman are empty – a good sign, we think, as we’re sure to accumulate more baby essentials over time! We also whipped up a no-sew crib skirt for just $14, adding a lovely layer of texture and discreetly concealing the formerly open space between the bottom of the mattress and the top of the drawer.

Reflecting Beauty: The Repurposed Mirror
Here’s a close-up of a super affordable Marshalls mirror that we initially purchased when it was black. We reinvented it with some cheerful green paint, giving it a fresh, playful look. Hanging it extremely securely across from the window allows it to bounce natural light around the small room, making the space feel brighter and more open. We envision our beanette enjoying a delightful visual symphony from her crib, alternating between gazing up at the blue ceiling, the aqua chandelier, and this whimsical mirror as she drifts off to sleep.

A Gallery of Love: Our Whimsical Art Wall
And here’s our art wall, which we recently refreshed with a creative mix of elements. We used some under-one-dollar decorative craft paper, a few cherished photos and prints we already owned, and two delightful new pieces from Etsy and Wall Blank. We particularly love the mixed-and-matched, playful feeling it adds to the room, creating an engaging focal point. The beauty of this arrangement is its flexibility – we can easily switch things out whenever the urge strikes! Plus, the asymmetrical layout contributes to a fun, less formal atmosphere, perfectly fitting for Baby P’s cheerful pear and aqua nursery.

A Bench with a Story: Style Meets Function
We already mentioned the old thrift store bench that now sits proudly in the nursery, with a handy bin of toys tucked beneath it, adding valuable display and organization space to our modestly sized room. We truly love how its soft celery color and patterned upholstery integrate seamlessly into the room, complementing the curtains without competing for attention. It was a happy accident, as we refinished this $7 bench over a year ago, never imagining it would one day find its perfect home in our future nursery.

Sentimental Keepsakes: Personalizing the Art Wall
But let’s circle back to our art wall for a moment. Here’s a closer shot of one of our favorite sentimental ideas. We plan to lovingly place our beanette’s hospital wristband in that chunky frame at the bottom (for now, we’ve created a charming little placeholder version). We also envision creating a delicate paper silhouette of her sweet profile once she arrives, mirroring the one we already have of her beloved four-legged brother, Burger. We absolutely adore these fun, easy, and completely free ways to add deep personalization to her space, creating cherished memories and a unique story within her room.

From Guest Room to Dream Nursery: The Complete Before & After
So, that beautifully summarizes our recent guest-bedroom-to-nursery makeover journey. And because we’re total suckers for thorough photo documentation, we couldn’t resist glancing back at this picture from the very beginning of the project…

… and we just knew we had to replicate it a few months later, now that the room is finally complete and ready for our little one:

There it is – that belly shot so many of you have been requesting! It’s funny to think that while I’m definitely visibly bigger in the “after” shot compared to January when the first back-to-back picture was taken, it’s also crazy to realize that three months have passed since that initial photo, and my bump hasn’t grown all that much proportionally since then. I suppose it’s safe to say I “popped” early in this pregnancy journey!
Budgeting for Baby: Our Nursery Makeover Expenses
But enough bump chatter; let’s dive into the budget, a crucial aspect of any home transformation! We approached this nursery makeover assuming we’d spend around $1500. This estimation factored in that we were starting from absolute scratch, needing virtually everything: lighting, paint, a comfortable chair, a dresser, a functional changing area, a crib, a rug, various storage solutions, a complete closet makeover, a mirror, art, curtains, shelving, a mobile, and so much more. Our $1500 estimate was based on some quick online research, which revealed that even affordable retailers like Target often charge around $1000 just for a crib, dresser, and changing table alone, not including other significant items like a chair, rug, lighting, art, or shelves. While we always hoped to pull everything together for less, we prefer to be realistic rather than overly optimistic when budgeting. It feels far more triumphant to come in under budget when you’ve taken the time to land on a feasible estimate, as opposed to completely blowing a budget that was unrealistically low to begin with.
The good news? We achieved our goal and then some! Here’s the full, transparent budget breakdown:
- No-VOC wall, ceiling, and closet paint: $80 (Mythic paint was a much-loved splurge for its eco-friendly properties)
- 100% wool 5 x 8 rug from a local outlet: $99
- Aqua capiz chandelier, also from a local lighting outlet: $50
- DIY window & closet curtain fabric: $105 (another intentional splurge that truly makes the room)
- Curtain rods and ring clips on clearance from Target: $10
- White faux wood blinds from Home Depot to block all light: $37
- Modern crib with built-in storage drawer: A cherished gift from my sweet mom
- Organic crib mattress: Generously provided by Savvy Rest
- Thrift store bucket chair: $20
- Chair pillow from TJ Maxx: $6.99
- Ottoman, bench, side table, and baskets: Already owned, repurposed from other rooms
- Faux sheepskin rug on ottoman: $19
- Marshall’s mirror & paint to transform it: $50
- Craigslist dresser & refinishing supplies: $31.51 ($20 for the dresser, $11.51 for supplies)
- Drawer lining project: $1.30
- Closet makeover: $18.36 (includes hanging bar, storage systems, and curtain fabric)
- No-sew crib skirt: $14
- DIY mobile: $12
- Organic crib sheet and changing pad cover: $29 (with coupon)
- Blue fan from Target: $55
- Homemade wall shelves for books and toys: $14
- Ikea lamp on side table: $19
- Ikea basket for hamper: $4 (along with already owned leftover crib skirt fabric)
- Art: $42 ($25 Wall Blank print + $12 Etsy print + $5 worth of craft paper)
- GRAND TOTAL: $717.16
Not too shabby at all, right? Especially when you consider that shows like Trading Spaces often have a $1,000 budget just to transform a single space! The fact that we were able to snap up two major pieces – the comfortable feeding chair and the spacious dresser – for just $20 each was a huge win. This incredible saving allowed us the freedom to take on a multitude of smaller, impactful projects that might not have fit into our budget otherwise. Of course, the gifted crib and organic mattress significantly helped us stay well under a thousand dollars (and come in at less than half of our initial $1500 budget!). We are absolutely thrilled that we could pour that freed-up “moolah” into so many delightful projects, almost all under $20, from crafting our mobile and building custom shelves to lining dresser drawers, creating a no-sew crib skirt, and even giving the closet a major makeover.
