Embracing Relaxation: Our Beach-Centered Maui Retreat

Our primary goal for this Maui escape was unequivocal: relaxation. After a whirlwind period of shooting over 100 projects for our book and three weeks straight of hosting guests, exhaustion was an understatement. We craved a profound sense of decompression and tranquility, something only the gentle lull of Hawaiian waves could provide. While many visitors flock to Hawaii for adrenaline-pumping activities – think snorkeling vibrant reefs, soaring through zip lines, or embarking on romantic dinner cruises – that simply wasn’t our focus. With Clara by our side, our vision of adventure revolved around simpler, more serene pleasures. Days were often spent basking on sun-kissed beaches, building sandcastles, and letting the ocean’s rhythm soothe our souls. However, beyond the delightful beach days and indulging in delicious local cuisine, we did manage to weave in a few “adventures” of our own, tailor-made for our family.

The Epic Journey: Conquering the Road to Hana with a Toddler

One of our most memorable expeditions was dedicating an entire day to traversing the legendary Road to Hana. Despite poring over several guidebooks, we weren’t entirely sure what awaited us on this iconic route. Yet, it consistently came up as one of those quintessential Maui experiences you simply “had to do.” So, with anticipation bubbling, we meticulously prepared: loading the car with an arsenal of snacks, fresh diapers, a full tank of fuel, and an indispensable audio guide CD, which we picked up at the highway’s start in Paia. We then set off, chasing the promise of breathtaking vistas, quintessential Hawaiian scenery, and, yes, an abundance of winding roads.

The lush, winding Road to Hana, with vibrant green foliage and glimpses of the ocean.

Those promises were not only kept but magnificently exceeded. The experience was nothing short of amazing. Before I delve into the incredible sights, a word about the highway itself: it was undeniably nerve-wracking at times. The nearly non-stop curves were initially exhilarating, adding a playful twist to our drive. However, after the third or fourth hour, as the turns grew sharper, the blind spots more frequent, and the road narrowed considerably (the yellow center line often vanished altogether), I found myself gripping the steering wheel with increasing intensity. It demands your full attention, a true test of driving focus, especially when you have precious cargo in the back.

A scenic view of the lush, green mountains and ocean along the Road to Hana.

Yet, every single curve, every moment of heightened tension, was absolutely worth it. The sheer beauty unfolding around us was unparalleled, a constant reward for our perseverance.

A stunning panoramic view of the rugged coastline and deep blue Pacific Ocean from a vantage point on the Road to Hana.

With Clara in tow, our stopping frequency wasn’t quite as high as the average Hana traveler, as long hikes to remote waterfalls weren’t particularly toddler-friendly. Nevertheless, we made a concerted effort to soak in as much as possible directly from the road, marveling at sights like this picturesque waterfall cascading gracefully, perfectly visible from the highway itself.

A beautiful waterfall cascades down a verdant cliff, visible from the roadside on the Road to Hana.

We did, however, dedicate extended time to exploring a couple of truly spectacular spots. One such gem was the Ke’anae Peninsula. Here, we were mesmerized by the dramatic spectacle of the sea violently crashing against rugged cliffs, creating a powerful symphony of nature. And no visit to Ke’anae is complete without a stop at Aunt Sandy’s, a delightful food stand that serves up what can only be described as legendary banana bread. To this day, the memory of that warm, sweet, perfectly moist banana bread still brings a smile to my face.

But even more captivating than Ke’anae was our visit to Waianapanapa State Park. This park is a tapestry of spectacular natural wonders, offering sights that left us utterly awestruck. We discovered a magnificent sea arch, proudly standing in the distance, enduring the ocean’s relentless embrace. We witnessed a powerful blowhole, where immense waves forced water skyward through a rocky crevice, a truly dynamic display of nature’s force. There was even an intriguing sea cave, inviting exploration and offering a cool respite from the sun.

However, the undisputed highlight of Waianapanapa was its iconic black sand beach. It was unlike anything we had ever encountered before, a stark and beautiful contrast to the golden beaches we were accustomed to.

Clara, our toddler, plays on the unique black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park, with dark volcanic rocks and crashing waves.

The distinctive black color of the sand is a direct result of pulverized lava rock, a powerful reminder of Maui’s volcanic origins. Clara, with her boundless curiosity, found it utterly fascinating, and we were equally captivated by its raw, dramatic beauty.

A couple of minor setbacks occurred after this point. Firstly, the weather took a turn, becoming quite overcast and dreary, which regrettably would have impacted the quality of our photos. I say “would have” because, unfortunately, our camera battery decided to give up the ghost shortly after! A minor hiccup, but easily forgivable given the incredible experiences we’d already captured. Undeterred, we continued our journey to Hana, where we enjoyed a delicious roadside BBQ lunch at a spot called Braddha Hutt’s. We then opted to complete the full loop around the island. While some travelers choose to spend the night in Hana or turn back, we were eager to see as much as possible. Plus, Clara was sound asleep, providing us with a tranquil window to continue our drive. The remainder of the loop still presented plenty of curves, but to our delight, there were significantly fewer cars coming the other way! We even ventured onto some unpaved roads, adding a touch of unexpected “adventure” to our route. All told, our comprehensive drive around Hana, including numerous stops, spanned approximately eight hours. Clara, miraculously, was an absolute trooper in the car; I believe our frequent stops for stretching and exploring helped her stay happy and engaged throughout the long day. We even made it home, charged the camera, and managed to catch an absolutely spectacular sunset back in Lahaina, a perfect end to a monumental day.

This photo captures my infamous “I thought the nice stranger taking our picture was zoomed in closer so I crouched down in order to be less tall but instead I just look like my midsection is collapsing in on itself” pose. Or, as Sherry affectionately calls it, my “walker pose” – yes, another nod to our shared love for The Walking Dead!

An Unforgettable Encounter: Whale Watching in Maui

Our other significant “big adventure” was an eagerly anticipated whale watching excursion. After Sherry and I had the thrilling experience of spotting some majestic whales from the shore (a story you can find more about in our previous post), we decided that actually getting out onto the open ocean in a boat would offer Clara an even closer, more profound encounter. This decision came with a slight hesitation, of course, as the thought of being stuck at sea for two hours with a potentially restless two-year-old was a mild source of apprehension. However, the promise of seeing these magnificent creatures up close was too great to resist.

Fortunately, Clara proved to be quite well-behaved on the boat, save for one brief, momentary meltdown, which we quickly diffused. Despite being a few years younger than the other children on board, we ambitiously attempted to involve her in the “Young Naturalist” program. This program was designed for quiet listening and observation, but for Clara, it quickly evolved into a spirited game of social interaction. Her approach? Getting right “up in the business” of every little girl she encountered, playfully ignoring the sweet naturalist who was trying to teach us about whales. She literally crouched down in front of each older child’s face, her little bottom aimed squarely at the instructor – a truly amusing, if slightly distracting, display of toddler enthusiasm. It was a clear reminder that we’re still refining our understanding of “age-appropriate activities”!

Once we gently redirected Clara’s boundless energy away from distracting the older kids, we refocused on our primary mission: whale watching. Clara even found her own special “perch” from which to survey the vast ocean, eagerly awaiting a sighting.

Clara happily settled in her 'perch' on the whale watching boat, looking out to sea.

And now for the exciting news – we saw whales! The anticipation was immense, and the payoff was truly special.

While none of the magnificent creatures came exceptionally close (boats are mandated to turn off their motors when within 100 feet), and there weren’t any dramatic, full-body breaches or colossal splashes, the frequent blows from their spouts and the occasional sightings of their powerful tails were still incredibly cool to witness. The sheer size and grace of these animals, even from a distance, were humbling and inspiring.

Beyond the whale sightings themselves, much of the joy came simply from being out on the pristine Hawaiian waters. And yes, my adventurous wife truly captured this fantastic family photo by leaning over the railing with the camera, channeling her inner Rose from Titanic, to get this perfect shot of us with the open sea as our backdrop.

We were blessed with a gorgeous day for our excursion, and the panoramic views looking back towards the lush coastline of Maui were absolutely stunning, adding another layer of beauty to our marine adventure.

Oh, and it dawned on us that this was likely Clara’s very first official boat trip! While we’re not entirely sure how many whales she truly registered, she certainly delighted her fellow passengers. At one perfectly quiet, whale-free moment, she suddenly burst out with an enthusiastic shout of “I see whales!” – prompting widespread chuckles and smiles from everyone around us. A true little character, even at sea.

Discovering Lahaina on Foot: Parks, Temples, and Unexpected Delights

Not all of our sightseeing required a car or a boat. Thanks to our strategically located condo, we did plenty of exploring on foot, especially in the charming town of Lahaina. One of our absolute favorite spots to unwind and enjoy some delicious ice cream was Banyan Tree Park, home to one of the world’s largest banyan trees. From a distance, it almost resembles an ordinary, tree-filled park. However, upon closer inspection, you quickly realize it’s a single, colossal tree that systematically drops roots from its branches, which then grow downwards into the soil, creating new trunks. What appears to be an entire grove of distinct trees is, in fact, all part of one immense, interconnected organism. It’s a natural wonder unlike anything we had ever witnessed before.

These aerial roots, once they reach the ground, establish themselves as new support trunks, creating a labyrinthine structure perfect for play. Clara and I had a wonderful time playing peekaboo around one of these impressive new trunks, a magical experience under the tree’s sprawling canopy.

Over the weekend, the park also hosts a vibrant artisan fair and flea market beneath its vast shade. We chose to capture these photos on a quieter day to truly showcase the magnificent scale and intricate beauty of this singular tree, allowing its grandeur to truly shine without the bustling crowds.

One of our favorite ways to immerse ourselves in the local culture and scenery was through long, leisurely morning walks. These strolls often included a delightful stop for breakfast along the way, fueling our explorations. It was a wonderful method to not only reach planned destinations but also, quite frequently, to stumble upon unexpected and delightful discoveries that added spontaneous charm to our days.

Among these unplanned treasures was the striking Lahaina Jodo Mission. It was genuinely astounding to turn a corner and suddenly be greeted by the serene sight of a traditional Japanese temple and a colossal Buddha statue. This unexpected cultural gem transported us momentarily to a different world.

It was incredibly cool to experience a little slice of Japan without having to endure another transoceanic flight, a truly pleasant surprise in the heart of Maui.

An Animal Lover’s Paradise: From Resorts to Aquariums

Given Clara’s absolute obsession with animals, we made sure to seek out plenty of opportunities for her to encounter feathered and fuzzy friends. You might think a luxury resort like the Hyatt is an unusual destination for animal spotting, but prepare to be surprised! We had heard whispers that the Hyatt Regency at Kaanapali featured some captivating animal residents, and we were certainly not disappointed by what we found right on the premises:

A vibrant flamingo stands gracefully by a water feature at the Hyatt Regency Kaanapali resort.

Roaming freely across the beautifully landscaped property were elegant flamingos, majestic black swans, and even charming African penguins – tropical penguins, who knew?! It was an unexpected delight, offering delightful animal encounters amidst the resort’s stunning backdrop. Not to mention, the resort boasts a truly envy-inducing pool area, complete with waterfalls and lush tropical foliage, adding to the luxurious ambiance.

We also enjoyed a picturesque oceanfront walk along the resort grounds, soaking in the stunning coastal views and the gentle sea breeze. A perfect way to spend a morning. Raise your hand if you’re having a good time!

A place where we were absolutely certain to find an abundance of animals was the Maui Ocean Center. And unlike the somewhat elusive whales, we are 100% confident that Clara spotted these captivating aquatic creatures. In fact, a few of them might have even spotted her in return, pressing their faces against the glass!

The absolute coolest and most immersive part of the aquarium was undoubtedly the underwater tunnel. This incredible feature places you right in the heart of the ocean, allowing fish of all sizes, impressive sharks, and even gigantic stingrays to gracefully swim not just around you, but spectacularly over your head. It’s an awe-inspiring experience that truly makes you feel like you’re part of the marine world.

We fondly referred to it as our much drier, and definitely more Clara-friendly, version of snorkeling. All the wonder of underwater exploration without the need for a wetsuit!

The Maui Ocean Center turned out to be our very last stop before departing the island. Since our flight was scheduled for late in the evening but our hotel check-out was in the morning, it provided an ideal way to spend a captivating afternoon before making our way to the airport. It offered a final, memorable immersion into Hawaii’s natural beauty.

Our Cherished Vacation Tradition and a Lasting Souvenir

While these blog posts serve as a wonderful way to share our trip with all of you, they also function as a personal diary, documenting our adventures for ourselves. To ensure we keep a more detailed, chronological journal of our travels, we’ve faithfully continued our beloved vacation tradition: writing postcards to ourselves. It’s a simple yet incredibly effective way to capture the essence of each day.

A collection of colorful postcards, featuring various Hawaiian scenes, laid out on a table.

In most cases, we don’t actually mail them. Instead, we typically utilize every inch of space on the back to meticulously chronicle what we did each day. We highlight key moments, such as where we ate, the sights we saw, and any funny anecdotes – like Clara’s not-so-successful dinner at the hibachi restaurant, which we mentioned in our first post. These postcards become tangible snippets of time, filled with personal reflections and memories.

And speaking of bringing memories home, take a look at this special item we brought back from Hawaii…

A vintage-style map of Maui printed on canvas, a unique souvenir from the trip.

It’s a beautiful historic map of Maui, thoughtfully printed on canvas, which we acquired for just $20. We felt it was essential to have a map that truly represented our Hawaiian adventure, especially since the existing US map where we place pins to mark all our travels only depicts the 48 continental states. This particular map is far too exquisite to pierce with a pin, but we are genuinely excited to find the perfect spot in our home to proudly display this piece of “Maui mapiness.” By the way, doesn’t the island of Maui itself almost resemble a limbless lady leaning over, as if closely examining the words “MAUI” printed just above it? It’s a quirky observation that adds to its charm!

Farewell Maui, Until We Meet Again!

And with that, our detailed recap of our incredible Maui adventure comes to a close. Writing these posts certainly evokes a strong sense of longing for another vacation, but more profoundly, we are overwhelmingly grateful for the opportunity to have escaped, relaxed, and cherished invaluable family time with our delightful traveling companion, Clara. And yes, we missed our beloved dog, Burger, every single second – we even woke up one night convinced we heard him walking around the bed, perhaps his ghostly presence checking in on us! Do any of you have exciting trips or vacations on the horizon? We’d love to hear all about your upcoming adventures in the comments below!
