What’s New: Navigating Renovation Hurdles & Home Improvements

Life at the beach house continues to provide its unique blend of charm and challenges, particularly when it comes to home improvements. This week, we’re sharing a rather painful progress report, especially concerning our ongoing bathroom renovation. It’s a tale of unexpected twists, including a rather dramatic encounter with our very own treacherous back stairs.

A narrow, winding staircase with triangular steps.
  • Those are the infamous, indeed treacherous, back stairs at our beloved beach house that became a topic of discussion in today’s episode. As you can see, the design incorporates sliver-thin triangular steps around the curve, presenting a particularly tricky ascent and descent. Despite their challenging geometry, it was actually one of the last two steps at the very bottom that led to my recent slip – ironically, these are typically considered the easiest and widest part of the entire staircase! This unexpected incident highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
  • To address this, we’ve invested in these transparent stair treads, which we plan to install this coming weekend during our next trip to the beach house. Our hope is that these subtle yet effective additions will significantly improve grip and prevent future slips, blending seamlessly with the existing aesthetic while prioritizing safety. We’re eager to see how they perform and will definitely keep you updated on the installation process and their effectiveness in a future episode!

  • Speaking of home improvements and managing the inherent stress of renovations, if you happened to miss our dedicated episode discussing the importance of a flexible timeline for our bathroom remodel – and other invaluable strategies we’re employing to minimize stress during this demanding process – you can catch all the details and insights in Episode #156. We share practical tips for staying calm and adaptable when tackling major home projects, understanding that not everything goes according to the initial plan.

Global Holiday Decorating Norms: A World of Festive Charm

One of the most enriching parts of our podcast journey is connecting with listeners from across the globe and learning about their unique traditions. In this episode, we were particularly captivated by the diverse and utterly charming ways people decorate their homes for various holidays. Since Instagram replies, while informative, couldn’t convey the visual splendor, we took it upon ourselves to unearth some stunning examples of the holiday decorating styles you shared with us. This dive into international festive decor has truly broadened our perspective on what it means to celebrate.

  • During our discussions, many listeners shared their experiences with Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and specifically the breathtaking practice of creating Rangoli designs. These intricate patterns, often made from colored rice, flour, sand, or flower petals, are truly a sight to behold and hold deep cultural significance. They are drawn on the floor at the entrance of homes to welcome gods and good fortune. You can find absolutely AMAZING examples of these vibrant and complex designs as part of Diwali celebrations by searching on Google Images. Below, we’ve included an example of such artistry, attributed to the talented Shanthi Sridharan, showcasing the meticulous detail and beautiful symmetry involved in these festive artworks.
  • Several listeners from Latin American countries described the truly elaborate Nativity scenes, or ‘Pesebres,’ that are central to their Christmas celebrations. These are far more than simple manger scenes; they often encompass entire villages, landscapes, and multiple biblical narratives, sometimes filling entire rooms with miniature figures, animals, and intricate scenery. The dedication and artistry involved in constructing these displays, passed down through generations, is remarkable. We found a beautiful example illustrating this rich tradition on Flickr, which captures just a glimpse of the detailed storytelling these scenes convey.
  • Advent wreaths also featured prominently in our discussions, particularly from European listeners. These wreaths, traditionally adorned with four candles lit on each Sunday leading up to Christmas, symbolize hope, peace, joy, and love. While many follow classic designs, we were fascinated by the creativity evident in contemporary interpretations. We discovered this inspiring post filled with a plethora of DIY Advent Wreaths, many showcasing a wonderfully modern aesthetic. A big thanks to Google’s translation feature for helping us navigate the page – it allowed us to fully appreciate these beautiful, customizable designs!
  • From our Australian listeners, we heard about decorating with locally sourced elements, specifically eucalyptus leaves, which offer a unique and fragrant touch to holiday decor. We found an exquisite example of a holiday wreath crafted using these distinctive leaves. Here in our home, we’ve also grown to love incorporating cut eucalyptus stems into our decor during this time of year. Their silvery-green foliage and refreshing aroma lend an instant wintery, sophisticated feel to any room, and they’re surprisingly affordable at places like Trader Joe’s!

Beyond these specific examples, we were also delighted to stumble upon some truly beautiful Hanukkah decorations during our research. The festival of lights, Hanukkah, is often celebrated with menorahs, dreidels, and a festive color palette of blue and white, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We found a wonderful collection of ideas and imagery on Google that showcases how people infuse their homes with the spirit of Hanukkah.

It’s important to note that the holiday examples and images we’ve shared here represent just a small fraction of the rich tapestry of traditions we discussed on the podcast. The array of customs is truly astounding – from children leaving treats in shoes or under their beds for gift-givers in certain European cultures, to the fascinating tradition of New Year’s trees in parts of Eastern Europe, and the many variations of Advent wreaths found globally. Learning about these diverse practices, which underscore humanity’s shared desire for connection and celebration, was incredibly fun and enlightening for us all. We highly encourage you to tune into the full episode to hear about all the other captivating traditions shared by our listeners worldwide.

  • And for those scratching their heads about our Taylor Swift reference earlier, fear not! If you’re unfamiliar with the specific lyric we playfully referenced in relation to our bathroom progress, you can hear the exact line in the very first few seconds of this music video. It’s a quick listen, and we promise it will make our playful grievance with her all the more clear!

Welcome to our “We’re Digging” segment, where we share the products, entertainment, and experiences that are currently bringing us joy and making our lives a little bit better. From unbelievably comfortable footwear to a must-see movie, here’s what has captured our attention recently.

  • We’ve been absolutely raving about these shoes, and for good reason! I recently received the Allbirds shoes as a thoughtful combined gift from my three sisters. Mine are the specific “Runners” style in the versatile “Natural Grey” shade, which you can see depicted on the right side of the image below. However, Allbirds offers a wide array of other colors and styles, catering to various preferences and needs. My sisters ingeniously gave me a gift card, which allowed me the freedom to pick out my perfect color and style, and I am so incredibly grateful they did! These shoes are not just aesthetically pleasing; they are, quite frankly, unbelievably comfortable. They live up to all the hype, making them an instant favorite in my wardrobe.

  • Beyond comfortable footwear, we also wanted to share our recent cinematic delight: the movie Knives Out. If you haven’t seen it yet, make it a priority! Here’s the trailer, but trust us, it only scratches the surface of this brilliant film. Every single positive review we’ve heard since its release is entirely accurate – this movie is not only super entertaining and incredibly clever, but it’s also genuinely funny. While “funny” might seem like an odd descriptor for a murder mystery, it perfectly captures the film’s witty dialogue, engaging characters, and unexpected twists. It was, without a doubt, one of our absolute favorite trips to the movies this year, offering a fresh and highly enjoyable take on the classic whodunit genre. We left the theater thoroughly impressed and entertained!
