Find Your Ideal Siding Color

Transforming the exterior of your home is an exciting endeavor, one that promises to redefine its character and enhance its curb appeal. Our journey into this world of color and curb appeal recently began with a crucial step: the meticulous process of selecting the perfect exterior paint color. While our home previously sported a pleasant, creamy hue on its hardboard siding and trim, we felt it was time for a refresh, a change that would infuse a renewed sense of unity and modern elegance. The existing light cream, though not offensive, wasn’t allowing our home’s architectural details, particularly the trim, to truly shine. It blended rather than contrasted, creating a somewhat monolithic appearance. Moreover, the pairing of this very light cream with our richer, darker brick often felt disconnected, almost as if two distinct structures had been joined rather than a single, cohesive dwelling.

Our vision was clear: to achieve a unified, harmonious aesthetic that celebrated the existing elements of our home while introducing a fresh, contemporary feel. We’d been admiring several homes in our neighborhood featuring gray hardboard siding complemented by brick – a combination that exudes sophistication and warmth. This inspired us to explore a mid-toned color palette, specifically within the gray family, to create a more integrated look. The aim was to find a shade that would bridge the gap between the brick and the siding, creating a seamless visual flow rather than the current “brick house with a big cream box in the middle” impression. Crucially, we wanted to avoid anything with too much of a reddish-brown undertone, as that would risk clashing with or overpowering our beautiful existing brickwork.

The Crucial Step: The Art of Testing Paint Swatches

The journey to finding the ideal exterior paint color is rarely a one-shot deal; it’s a careful process of elimination and observation. We began by sifting through a myriad of paint swatches, narrowing down a vast initial selection of approximately 25 potential colors to just three that truly stood out. Our brick, with its distinct gray undertones, particularly in the mortar, served as our ultimate guide. We held each swatch against the brick, scrutinizing how the colors interacted, seeking those that echoed its inherent depth and character.

Once our top three contenders were identified, we made a trip to Lowe’s, where we secured three small, two-dollar paint pots – a small investment for a decision that will impact our home’s appearance for years to come. This budget-friendly step is indispensable for anyone embarking on an exterior paint project. Applying actual paint samples to your home’s surface, rather than relying solely on tiny paper swatches, provides an accurate representation of how the color will truly appear under various lighting conditions throughout the day. We meticulously applied three test squares directly above the brick part of the house. This strategic placement allowed us to observe how each color would look when directly abutting the brick, providing invaluable insight into their compatibility and overall harmony. It’s during this phase that you truly grasp the subtle nuances of a color, how it changes with sunlight, shadow, and even cloud cover, factors that can dramatically alter a shade’s perception. (And yes, for those wondering, I may or may not have worn my shirt inside out during this highly scientific endeavor – comfort is key when pursuing design perfection!)

Unveiling the Victor: A Gray That Harmonizes

After careful consideration, stepping back, and observing our test patches over several days, one color unequivocally emerged as the frontrunner. The decision, though thoroughly thought out, felt remarkably clear once we saw the candidates truly come to life on the house.

The winning shade, positioned on the right in the photograph, is a beautifully warm taupey gray. Its inherent warmth and subtle undertones are what truly set it apart. We were immediately struck by how well it resonated with the natural tones of our brick, creating a dialogue rather than a clash. It shares many of the same grounding undertones present in the brick itself, fostering a sense of visual continuity. Our confidence in this choice was further solidified by its striking resemblance to the color of our brick mortar. This harmonious connection ensures that the new siding will not compete with the brick but rather complement and elevate it, creating that cohesive, unified look we’ve been striving for. This particular shade strikes a perfect balance, offering the desired modern gray aesthetic without feeling cold or stark against the warmth of the brick.

“Flagstone” by Martha Stewart: Our Chosen Hue

Our winning paint color is none other than “Flagstone” by Martha Stewart. While we’ve selected the color, we’ll be having it color-matched to a high-quality exterior paint specifically designed for durability and longevity. We’re currently exploring options that ideally include a built-in primer, which would streamline the painting process and provide an excellent foundation for the topcoat. More specific details regarding the brand and type of paint will be shared once we finalize our purchase and lock in the product specifications. Knowing the exact shade allows us to move forward with planning, even as we confirm the practical aspects of the paint itself.

Of course, this decision wasn’t made in isolation. The other two contenders offered valuable insights into what we *didn’t* want. The color in the middle, “Mushroom” by Martha Stewart, was ultimately deemed too dark for our particular home and vision. While beautiful in its own right, it created too much visual weight. The shade on the left, “Bedford Gray,” also by Martha Stewart, leaned too icy and blue for our taste. We felt it lacked the warmth and natural undertones necessary to truly harmonize with our brick and achieve the welcoming aesthetic we desired. This rigorous selection process, while time-consuming, prevents costly mistakes and ensures the final choice aligns perfectly with our expectations.

Crafting a Cohesive Exterior Palette: Balance and Contrast

It’s important to acknowledge that photographs, while helpful, can never fully capture the dynamic interplay of light and color that occurs in real life. However, we are absolutely thrilled with “Flagstone” because it strikes that elusive perfect balance: it’s not too icy, cool, or light, nor is it excessively dark. We genuinely appreciate dark houses, especially when paired with crisp white trim that truly pops – a combination that often looks absolutely amazing. However, when considering our specific architectural style, our existing black roof, the rich tones of our brick, our cheerful yellow front door, and the bright white trim we plan to add, a mid-tone gray felt like the most appropriate and balanced choice. A very dark gray house paired with our black roof, for instance, might have rendered our charming ranch home feeling overly dark and perhaps even a little somber. Our goal is to infuse light and vibrancy, not to diminish it.

With “Flagstone,” we anticipate achieving a beautiful equilibrium: the black roof will provide the strong, dark anchor, while the future bright white trim will offer a striking contrast, allowing it to truly “pop” against the new gray siding. This carefully considered palette ensures that each element contributes to a sophisticated, yet inviting, overall appearance. The yellow door will remain a vibrant focal point, a burst of welcoming color against the refined gray and white backdrop. This thoughtful approach to color selection is about more than just painting; it’s about crafting an entire exterior personality that reflects our taste and enhances our home’s inherent charm. To offer a glimpse into our vision, here’s a (admittedly poorly Photoshopped, but illustrative) version of the last pic, giving you an idea of the exciting direction we’re hopefully headed:

Beyond Paint: The Road Ahead – Renovation and Timing

Pinpointing our paint color winner is a huge step, but it’s just one piece of a larger exterior renovation puzzle. Speaking of the soon-to-be white trim, it’s actually quite out of sequence for us to have tested paint on the house already. There are several crucial preliminary steps that need to be addressed before the painting can truly begin. Our porch, for instance, currently features charming but dated scallops that we plan to demo. Painting the hardboard siding first and then tackling the scallop removal could easily lead to paint damage, necessitating tedious and frustrating retouches. To avoid this, our next major undertaking will be the demolition of those scallops.

Following the demo, we’ll move on to painting the hardboard siding its beautiful new gray and the trim a crisp, bright white. But the trim transformation doesn’t stop there. We also plan to frame out the existing curvy columns on our porch, transforming them into chunky, square columns that will provide a more contemporary and substantial look, perfectly complementing our future scallop-less header. These architectural details are vital in achieving the updated, cohesive aesthetic we envision. It’s a multi-faceted project, and meticulous planning ensures that each step is executed efficiently and effectively, preventing rework and maintaining the integrity of the finished product.

The timing of these exterior projects is, of course, a critical consideration. We are keenly aware that exterior painting is highly dependent on favorable weather conditions. We’re hoping to tackle the scallop demolition, painting, and column framing before the colder weather fully settles in, making exterior work less feasible. Adding to the complexity, we’re simultaneously juggling a significant kitchen renovation, which demands a substantial amount of our time and energy. It’s a busy period, but the anticipation of seeing these transformations come to life is a powerful motivator. Just imagine: our cheerful yellow front door, framed by vibrant white trim, set against the sophisticated gray hardboard, all harmonizing with our characterful, gray-undertoned brick! The vision in my mind is truly lovely, and we are so eager to see it materialize in real life. Should it, by some unforeseen chance, not meet our expectations, we do have a backup plan (and gallons of our current house paint stored in the basement!). But we’re confident in our choices and the careful planning that has gone into them.

Your Home Transformation Stories?

In the meantime, we’d love to hear from our readers. Have you recently embarked on an exterior painting project for your house? Did you meticulously test out various paint swatches beforehand, or did you make a bolder, perhaps more spontaneous, decision? Were you filled with nerves about such a significant aesthetic change, or did you approach it with the same unexpected confidence we’ve found ourselves experiencing? It’s truly remarkable how not nervous I feel about this massive undertaking. Typically, I’m quite indecisive, preferring to ponder and deliberate for extended periods, but this time, I am all in – completely resolute and genuinely excited. Seriously, I can barely wait to see this vision come to life. So here’s hoping that the impending colder weather and the ongoing demands of the kitchen renovation don’t push this exterior refresh into a spring project. Come on, fall, hold out for a while longer and grant us a few more weeks of ideal painting weather!
