Gelati Celesti: The Store Overload Phenomenon

In the world of home design, inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places. While many homeowners meticulously browse dedicated showrooms and design magazines, a growing number are discovering fresh ideas in vibrant commercial spaces. We’ve often found ourselves “store crashing” – exploring local businesses not just for their offerings, but for their captivating aesthetics. From a charming local kids consignment shop with delightful decor to an office space brimming with innovative touches, these excursions consistently prove that great design transcends its original context.

Our latest design discovery led us to Gelati Celesti, a local ice cream parlor that recently opened its doors in our neighborhood. Beyond serving absolutely divine ice cream, the establishment itself is a masterclass in thoughtful interior design. What truly caught our eye was how effortlessly many of its commercial design elements could be reimagined and integrated into a residential setting, particularly a modern kitchen or dining area. This isn’t just a fleeting commercial trend; it’s a testament to timeless design principles that resonate in any space. Join us as we take a closer look at this delightful spot and unearth a treasure trove of home design inspiration.

A Grand Entrance: Black Frames and Rustic Charm

Gelati Celesti's inviting black-framed entrance

Stepping into Gelati Celesti, the first impression is one of striking modernity blended with inviting warmth. The entrance features awesome black-framed doors seamlessly integrated with expansive black-framed windows. This bold design choice isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; it serves a crucial function. The dark frames create a strong visual statement, drawing the eye and framing the interior space beautifully. For homeowners, incorporating black-framed windows and doors can dramatically elevate curb appeal and inject a contemporary, sophisticated edge into any exterior or interior. They create a captivating contrast, especially when paired with lighter exterior finishes, and their presence inside can help define architectural lines and enhance the flow of natural light.

Upon entering, your gaze is immediately drawn to the left, where a prep area unfolds against a backdrop of a rustic, whitewashed plank wall. This wall provides an instant dose of texture and character, a classic design element that brings a touch of farmhouse chic or coastal calm into any space. Whitewashed wood planks are incredibly versatile, offering a bright, airy feel while still maintaining a cozy, lived-in aesthetic. They are perfect for creating an accent wall in a kitchen, dining room, or even a cozy breakfast nook, adding depth and visual interest without overwhelming the space.

The Heart of the Kitchen: Mint Green Penny Tiles and Luxurious Marble

The prep area is further enhanced by an unexpected yet delightful splash of color: fun mint-green penny tiles. The story behind these tiles is particularly charming; after a chat with the owner, he revealed that he drew inspiration from our very own kitchen! While he adopted the beloved penny tile concept, he ingeniously opted for a refreshing mint hue. This serves as a wonderful reminder that design inspiration truly is reciprocal and can come from anywhere. Penny tiles, with their small, uniform shape and tactile texture, offer a unique vintage appeal that can be modernized with a vibrant color choice. Mint green, in particular, evokes a sense of freshness, calm, and playful nostalgia, making it an ideal choice for a kitchen backsplash or an accent wall in a bathroom.

Beyond the playful tiles, the area boasts luxurious marble counters. These counters, with their distinctive veining and smooth, cool surface, add an undeniable touch of elegance and sophistication. Marble is a timeless material that brings a sense of opulence and natural beauty to any kitchen or bathroom. Its unique patterns ensure that no two surfaces are exactly alike, making each installation a bespoke work of art. The contrast between the rustic whitewashed planks, the vibrant mint penny tiles, and the sophisticated marble creates a dynamic interplay of textures and finishes that is both eye-catching and harmonious.

Crafting a Cohesive Palette: The Perfect Blend

Kitchen pairing inspiration with concrete floors and coral sign

For those brainstorming kitchen pairings, Gelati Celesti offers a “smokin’ combo” that could easily translate into a breathtaking home kitchen. Imagine dark chocolate concrete floors providing a grounded, industrial base. These floors are not only incredibly durable and easy to maintain but also lend a chic, modern foundation to the space. Paired with the luminous light marble counters and the whimsical mint penny tile backsplash, and framed by those rustic wood plank walls, the result is a beautifully balanced design. The interplay of dark and light, smooth and textured, modern and rustic, creates an environment that is rich in character and visual depth.

This thoughtful combination is then punctuated by strategic pops of color, such as a peachy coral in the signage, which we’ll explore further. The overall effect is a testament to how diverse materials can come together to create a cohesive and incredibly stylish space. While you might want to skip the giant ice cream freezers in the middle of your home kitchen (unless you’re truly dedicated!), the underlying principles of material harmony and strategic contrast are invaluable takeaways.

Accent Colors and Thoughtful Details

Closer look at the salmon-colored sign and mint green penny tile

A closer shot reveals the truly awesome salmon-colored sign, ingeniously designed with the bottom ten squares crafted from chalkboard paint. This allows the staff to easily update and display new flavors, a practical touch that also adds to the store’s charm. In a home setting, incorporating a chalkboard section into your kitchen design can be both functional and decorative. It’s perfect for grocery lists, family messages, or even displaying a rotating menu for dinner parties. The salmon hue of the sign, a warm and inviting peachy coral, acts as a vibrant accent against the cooler tones of the mint tiles and marble, proving the power of a well-chosen accent color to inject personality and warmth into a room. And truly, the mint green penny tile continues to shine, a playful yet elegant feature that adds texture and a unique flair to the wall. Me-ow, indeed!

An Irresistible Invitation

Enticing close-up of ice cream cones

Let’s get even closer. Who isn’t craving a big ol’ cone after seeing this? The irresistible allure of the product is perfectly mirrored by the inviting atmosphere of the store itself. This close-up not only makes one hungry for ice cream but also highlights how details, even in a commercial setting, are designed to engage and delight the senses, a principle equally important in creating a comfortable and appealing home environment.

Industrial Chic Meets Cozy Comfort

Dining area with industrial metal and wood tables, black-trimmed windows

Moving to the other side of the room, we discover a seating area that beautifully marries industrial aesthetics with a sense of comfort. Here, industrial metal and wood tables and chairs create a robust yet stylish arrangement. This combination of materials is highly versatile and durable, making it ideal for both commercial spaces and high-traffic areas in a home, such as a breakfast nook, a casual dining area, or even a home office. The metal elements contribute a modern, edgy feel, while the warmth of the wood ensures the space remains inviting.

The theme of those awesome black-trimmed windows continues here, flooding the space with abundant natural light. These large windows, set against the industrial concrete floors, create a harmonious and impactful design statement. For homeowners, this is a clear lesson: painting your kitchen window sashes black, especially in a kitchen featuring white cabinetry, dark floors, and colorful tile, can create a dramatically chic and cohesive look. It provides a striking contrast that frames outdoor views and enhances the architectural appeal of the room. And don’t miss that inspiring sign in the back…

A Message to Live By

Sign that reads 'ICE CREAM IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA'

I couldn’t agree more with the message displayed prominently: “ICE CREAM IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA.” This simple, uplifting phrase not only fits the establishment’s purpose perfectly but also serves as a delightful piece of decor. In home design, incorporating personalized signage, artwork, or meaningful quotes can inject personality and a sense of joy into your living spaces. It’s a subtle yet effective way to reinforce the atmosphere you wish to create, whether it’s a cozy kitchen, a vibrant playroom, or a tranquil bedroom.

Ingenious Lighting: Repurposed Jar Pendants

Among the most charming and easily replicable design elements are the fantastic glass-jugs-turned-pendant-lights hanging above the serving area and throughout the seating space. These unique fixtures demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness, turning ordinary objects into extraordinary design features. The warm glow emanating from these repurposed glass jars adds an inviting ambiance, perfectly complementing the industrial yet cozy vibe of the store. This concept is a goldmine for DIY enthusiasts looking to add character to their homes. Imagine transforming vintage mason jars or antique glass bottles into pendant lights for a rustic kitchen island, a charming breakfast nook, or even a creative display in a craft room. It’s an accessible way to infuse personal style and a touch of bespoke design into any residential setting.

Smart Seating Solutions: The Built-In Banquette

Seating details with a metal, wood, and striped bench

Further exploring the seating details, we note the smart incorporation of a bench that combines metal, wood, and a stripe of darker wood. This built-in seating solution is not just stylish but also incredibly practical. Built-in benches, or banquettes, are renowned for their space-saving capabilities. Unlike traditional chairs that require ample space for pulling out, a banquette allows a table to be placed much closer to a wall, maximizing floor space – a huge advantage in smaller kitchens or dining areas. This design choice could provide excellent ideas for a cozy breakfast nook, a functional mudroom bench, or even a custom dining banquette in your own home. Beyond saving space, banquettes offer a comfortable and inviting seating option, often allowing for hidden storage beneath the seats, adding another layer of functionality.

Beyond Design: A Taste of Delight

Of course, this “store crashing” adventure wasn’t all about design analysis; a girl’s gotta eat! For any locals or visitors, you absolutely MUST try “Just Ask” – it’s a glorious concoction of white chocolate ice cream swirled with peanut butter and Oreos. Seriously, it will blow your freaking mind. And our little one, Clara, is quite fond of their cake batter variety too. Sorry for the caps, but it truly is that good!

This rare installment of our store crashing series highlights an essential truth: inspiration is all around us. Have you ever visited a commercial establishment – be it a café, a boutique, or even a doctor’s office – that sparked an idea for your own home? It’s amazing how many innovative design solutions and stylistic elements can be adapted for residential use if you simply keep an open mind and a keen eye. From color palettes and material combinations to clever lighting and space-saving furniture, commercial spaces often push creative boundaries in ways that can profoundly influence our personal environments.

Finally, a shout-out to the talented team that brought Gelati Celesti’s fantastic design to life. The owner asked us to extend our gratitude to his designer and construction crew, and we are always happy to give props and share the local love. For anyone seeking similar excellence in design and construction, the designer was Fraser Design Associates, and the construction was expertly handled by THS Construction. Their collaboration created a space that is not only a successful business but also a vibrant source of inspiration for home decorators everywhere.
