Transforming a room, whether it’s a sprawling living space or a compact half bathroom, typically unfolds in three meticulously planned stages. The duration of these makeovers can vary significantly, ranging from an intense weekend blitz to a more leisurely, multi-month endeavor – sometimes even years, depending on the project’s complexity and the occasional detour. Regardless of the timeline, our tried-and-true methodology consistently follows this sequence:
- Phase 1: Preparation & Planning. This crucial initial stage encompasses a spectrum of activities, from imaginative brainstorming sessions and careful color palette selection to strategic shopping for materials and essential groundwork like priming, sanding, and spackling.
- Phase 2: Major Upgrades. Once the foundation is solid, we dive into the more substantial tasks. This includes painting walls, refinishing or painting cabinets to give them a fresh lease on life, and installing new flooring that revitalizes the room’s entire feel.
- Phase 3: Finishing Touches. The final phase is where personality and charm truly emerge. This involves selecting and installing curtains, updating hardware, curating meaningful art, and arranging accessories – all the carefully chosen elements that infuse a space with character and make it uniquely yours.
When John’s mother hinted that his grandmother’s half bathroom was ripe for a refresh, it was the perfect opportunity to put these three phases into action. What ensued was a whirlwind three-day bathroom blitz, a true testament to efficient planning and dedicated teamwork. The project involved two seven-hour drives, filled with brainstorming and strategic stops, and even some obligatory midnight painting sessions to stay on schedule. We were incredibly grateful that John’s parents joined us, ensuring our baby Clara remained happily occupied throughout the intense renovation. Before we delve into the transformation, we must introduce you to Granny. A resident of Huntington, West Virginia, Granny is genuinely one of the most delightful and kind-hearted individuals you could ever hope to meet. Her warmth and vibrant spirit are truly infectious. Here she is, cherishing the precious moment of holding baby Clara for the very first time:

As avid proponents of sharing the complete, day-by-day journey of our projects, we’re excited to unveil the comprehensive To-Do list that guided our turbo-charged three-day makeover. We’ve even included our initial estimates for when each task would be tackled, providing a transparent look into our planning process:

- The grand reveal of the entire transformation for Granny, who diligently promised not to peek beforehand (Day 3)
This heartwarming project took place in Granny’s charming 1920s house, a home steeped in family history since the 1940s. It’s where John’s mother and her siblings spent their childhoods, creating countless cherished memories. John’s late grandfather, affectionately known as “Papa,” was a true handyman and dedicated years to improving the house himself. As a result, every corner of this home is imbued with stories and the enduring legacy of his love and labor.

Remarkably, it was Papa who masterfully converted an old kitchen pantry into this very half bathroom! His ingenuity was evident in every detail, from installing the plumbing to setting up the electrical systems, all done decades ago. However, time had taken its toll, and the room was undoubtedly ready for a modern refresh. The most pressing item on Granny’s wish list was the dated wallpaper, which she herself was “ready to tear off the walls.” At 90 years old, her vibrant DIY spirit remains as strong as ever! So, for context, here’s a glimpse of what the room looked like before the wallpaper was thoughtfully removed:

Thanks to the incredible teamwork of Granny, our Aunt Ellen, and our Uncle Dean, the old wallpaper was miraculously and entirely removed before our arrival around dinnertime. This fantastic head start meant we could immediately dive into prepping the rest of the room throughout the night. Unfamiliar with the shopping options in Huntington, we took a proactive approach and completed much of our accessory and material shopping before we even left home. This included a frantic but fruitful dash into HomeGoods, where we picked up a variety of items we thought might suit the space. We intentionally over-bought, knowing we could easily return anything Granny didn’t need or didn’t fit the final vision. We also anticipated that Granny might already own some items similar to what we purchased, so our ideal scenario involved a thoughtful blend of new finds and her cherished existing pieces, creating a lovely mix of old and new while also achieving some nice savings.

A pivotal stop was at our favorite fabric outlet, U-fab. There, we discovered a stunning yard of floral-printed fabric, instantly recognizing its perfect alignment with Granny’s elegant and cheerful style. This particular fabric, for those interested in its exquisite design, is crafted by Braemore. Our plan was to transform it into sweet little cafe curtains for the bathroom’s sole, small window, adding a touch of bespoke charm. To give you a glimpse into our design vision, here’s an image showcasing that beautiful fabric alongside some of the accessories we carefully selected, illustrating the aesthetic direction we were envisioning:

Our preparatory shopping spree also included a visit to Home Depot, where we sourced the new flooring that would play a significant role in the Day Two transformation. The seven-hour drive to Huntington was not merely travel time; it became an extended brainstorming session. As we absorbed the changing road trip scenery, we meticulously discussed and refined additional ideas for the space, all while ingeniously keeping our beloved pooch and energetic toddler happily occupied – a true multitasking feat!

Upon our arrival, the room, while still a work in progress, already presented a vastly improved canvas thanks to the wallpaper removal. It was a significant psychological boost to see the space looking worlds better with just that initial, crucial step completed. The blank walls offered a clear view of the room’s potential, ready for its full transformation.

The good news was that the wallpaper, surprisingly, came down with relative ease – just a little tugging here and there. However, with the wallpaper gone, some pre-existing issues in the room became even more pronounced and, frankly, looked worse for wear. Notable problem areas included the lower corner of the sink, which showed signs of age and dampness, a noticeably burned electrical outlet, and a severely rusted vent situated on the opposite side of the pedestal sink. These exposed imperfections underscored the necessity of a thorough renovation beyond mere cosmetic changes.

Indeed, a closer inspection revealed several critical areas that undeniably required immediate attention and meticulous care to ensure a truly polished and lasting transformation. These were not just minor fixes but essential repairs for the room’s long-term integrity and aesthetic appeal.

With our assessment complete, we wasted no time and immediately got down to business. My primary task was the careful and precise removal of all the old, deteriorated caulk. This initial step, while absolutely critical for a professional finish, often doesn’t yield immediate visual improvement; in fact, sometimes it can make the area appear temporarily worse before it gets better. It’s an indispensable part of preparing surfaces for a flawless, long-lasting seal.

… however, the true magic unfolds once fresh caulk is meticulously applied and followed by a crisp coat of paint. At this point, the transformation is remarkable, and the surfaces look as pristine and polished as if they were brand new.
Reflecting on the task of cutting out old caulk, it’s astonishing just how much of it can accumulate over the years, even in a small space. Just observe the substantial pile I managed to remove after tackling the sink, the baseboards, and numerous other random corners that were riddled with remnants of leftover wallpaper and areas of cracked flooring. This seemingly minor task truly highlights the depth of the preparatory work involved in a comprehensive room makeover.

Incredibly, I ended up using an entire tube of fresh caulk to seal and perfect this tiny bathroom space! Every edge, from the baseboards to the intricate area around the sink, and even the doorway and window trim, received a thorough application of new caulk. It’s undeniably a tedious and time-consuming job, requiring patience and precision, but the payoff is immense. The difference it makes in achieving a truly polished, professional, and seamless look is absolutely worth every minute of effort.
Following the meticulous caulking, the next critical step was spackling and sanding. We utilized standard Dap spackle, easily identifiable by its blue lid, and a reliable spackle knife. With careful attention, we pressed the spackle into every crack and crevice throughout the room, systematically working our way around. Occasionally, I find it beneficial to lightly sand a surface *before* applying spackle, especially if there are any loose flakes of plaster or other irregularities. This pre-sanding helps ensure a smoother, more even finished look and provides a less crumbly, more stable foundation for the spackle application.

Meanwhile, John, ever resourceful, had set up an impromptu woodworking station right in the middle of the kitchen. This unexpected setup is often the reality when you’re away from your usual workshop and specialized tools, adapting to the available space and making do with what’s on hand. It speaks to the agile nature of DIY projects undertaken in new environments.

His task was to cut a small plank of wood with precision, intended to seamlessly cover an existing gap at the top of Granny’s cabinets. These cabinets were uniquely constructed from two separate units pushed together, topped with an old hollow-core door serving as the countertop. To create a unified and aesthetically pleasing surface, John carefully nailed the newly cut plank into the existing 2×4 support pieces, effectively bridging the gap and laying the groundwork for a truly integrated look.

Naturally, this newly installed plank, along with the entire cabinet structure, would achieve its truly seamless and polished appearance once painted. This realization signaled the next crucial step: carefully removing all cabinet hardware and preparing the surfaces for priming. This meticulous preparation is essential for ensuring paint adhesion and a smooth, professional finish.

Here, you can see John diligently rolling on the primer. For those interested in the intricacies of our cabinet painting process, we’ve documented a much more thorough rundown on how we effectively prime and paint cabinets in this detailed post, offering step-by-step guidance for achieving professional results.

The ingenuity of a DIY project often necessitates adapting spaces. Here, the drawer fronts, meticulously primed and awaiting their final coats of paint, are seen drying in Granny’s back room – cleverly transformed into a temporary yet highly efficient cabinet-painting studio. This dedicated space allowed for proper drying and minimized disruption in the main living areas.

By the end of Day 1, we had invested a solid four or five hours solely into preparing the room and priming the cabinets and countertop. This foundational work is undeniably time-consuming but absolutely vital for a successful outcome. Our updated To-Do list, reflecting our significant progress and outlining the remaining tasks with our hopeful timelines, now looked like this:
Brainstorm colors & go shopping for accessories (Day 1)Spackle/sand/caulk everything to prep the room for paint (Day 1)Rebuild the cabinets a bit so they look more balanced (Day 1)Prime andpaint the cabinets for a more updated and open look (Day 1 & 2)- Paint the entire room, including the ceiling (Day 2)
- Fix a few issues, like a rusted duct and an old dingy corner below the sink (Day 2)
- Redo the floors, which were that old sheet laminate stuff (Day 2)
- Revive some hardware/accessories with a fresh finish (Day 2)
- Make & hang curtains to add some charm (Day 3)
- Bring in some meaningful art (Day 3)
- Add some functional/personal accessories to finish things off (Day 3)
- Reveal the whole shebang for Granny (Day 3)
We harbored high hopes that we could successfully complete every item on our ambitious list within the confines of our three-day blitz. The end-of-Day 1 results brought us immense satisfaction: a wonderfully fresh and clean slate, perfectly prepared for the exciting process of beautifying it in the morning. After a truly packed day of shopping, extensive driving, diligent prepping, and meticulous priming, we finally retired to bed precisely at midnight, eagerly anticipating the transformation that Day 2 would bring.
