Inside a Modern Home: Stylish Design and Smart Living Tour

Woot — it’s Friday! We’re mid-project here painting the living room trim, so it felt like the perfect time to virtually crash a home. Today’s tour is a beautifully designed 500-square-foot New York City apartment owned by Herman and Eduardo. Despite its compact footprint, the space feels luxurious and thoughtfully planned, with a modest kitchen, dining area, living area, bedroom, and bathroom. Every inch has been considered, and the owners handled a lot of the work themselves, from demolition and floor planning to sewing pillows and curtains. Let’s start in the living area.

A large black storage-and-partition unit separates the bedroom while providing accessible storage from three sides — a clever, space-saving solution. The room’s layered textures, bold art, and handmade pillows give it a polished, lived-in look, and the textured rug anchors the seating area.

The colorful artwork injects playful personality without taking itself too seriously — a look that’s easy to replicate for anyone wanting a DIY wall statement. Eduardo’s homemade pillows add a personal, crafted touch to the space.

Across from the sofa is the TV, set in front of a painted brick stripe that was built out with drywall to create a display nook — a modern twist on a traditional mantel that adds both texture and function.

A pair of Knoll Bertoia chairs brings sculptural elegance to the room. They read like focal pieces, elevating the seating arrangement with a timeless design aesthetic.

The living area flows into a chic dining zone featuring a marble-topped tulip table. The look is attainable on a budget with similar, stylish alternatives. Eduardo also crafted the striking mirror above the dining space, further demonstrating the owners’ hands-on approach to design.

Down a short hallway you’ll find the bedroom — but first, note the built-in drawers that maximize storage and keep the small footprint feeling uncluttered.

Adjacent to the communal spaces is a compact office nook. It’s a dedicated corner within the open-plan room and includes a custom-built desk topped with plexiglass for a sleek, durable surface.

The kitchen occupies a raised platform that subtly defines the area. A peninsula packed with storage increases counter space and helps section off the kitchen without closing it off. Cabinets and countertops from a budget-friendly retailer were customized to fit the layout, achieving a high-end look without overspending.

The bedroom feels both dramatic and serene. Metallic curtains frame the back wall, complementing a silver, texture-rich headboard and a long, sunny-yellow bolster pillow. In a smart, budget-conscious move, Eduardo made the bolster and the couple sourced the coverlet affordably.

There’s also a compact bathroom — small rooms can be tricky to photograph, but the peek we get shows efficient use of space and thoughtful finishes.

Herman and Eduardo’s apartment is a great example of how constraints can inspire creativity. The clever storage solutions, DIY details, and cohesive aesthetic make this small space feel complete and comfortable. A big thank-you to the owners for sharing the tour while we tackle our own paint job. Now for the fun part: what’s your favorite element? The metallic headboard and bold living-room art are my picks. John loves the three-sided storage unit and the modern dining light fixture. Your turn.
