Light Up Your Hallway: A Brilliant DIY Installation

From the very first moment we stepped into this house, our eyes were drawn to a peculiar yet captivating sight: a trio of lights, arranged in a rough line along the upstairs hallway. This arrangement, which we playfully dubbed “the tri-light zone,” ignited an inexplicable spark of excitement within us. We immediately sensed its immense potential, a diamond in the rough waiting to shine, even as we squinted past the drab, old carpeting and the rather uninspired blue trim that dominated the space.

Transforming the Tri-Light Zone: A Hallway Lighting Renovation Project

The journey to creating a truly inspiring hallway began with a critical assessment of the existing lighting. The previous fixtures were not only undersized for the colossal 33-foot length of our hallway – a detail that pictures simply don’t do justice – but they were also a mismatched collection of imperfections. Each light possessed its own set of flaws: all three were noticeably crooked, one suffered from a broken stem, and, bafflingly, the central fixture was significantly larger than its counterparts. This lack of uniformity and grandeur left the expansive hallway feeling dim, uninviting, and visually unbalanced.

Our initial thought was to simply refresh these old lights with a new coat of spray paint – perhaps a sophisticated oil-rubbed bronze, a bold red, or a classic navy. However, we quickly dismissed this idea. The design of the existing fixtures, coupled with a darker finish, threatened to lean towards an unintended gothic cathedral aesthetic, far from the modern yet classic look we envisioned for our home. It became clear that a complete replacement was necessary to unlock the full potential of our “tri-light zone” and elevate the entire hallway.

The Hunt for the Perfect Pendant: Blending Classic Charm with Modern Flair

The quest for the ideal light fixtures wasn’t a spontaneous decision; it was the culmination of years of admiration. For what felt like an eternity, I had mentally bookmarked a particular style of fixture. My fascination began back in 2012, during a “House Crashing” event we attended in Portland, Oregon. These specific lights, with their unique blend of classic and modern aesthetics, had captivated me instantly. I adored their dark finish, which provided a striking contrast without feeling overly heavy, a feat achieved beautifully thanks to their elegant glass panels. This design offered both a sense of timelessness and contemporary appeal, making them incredibly versatile and perfectly aligned with our home’s evolving style.

Crucially, my partner, Sherry, shared my enthusiasm for these fixtures – a significant win, as agreeing on lighting choices isn’t always a straightforward process for us! The only substantial hurdle was the price tag: at $250 per fixture, purchasing all three would amount to a considerable investment, pushing them just beyond our comfortable budget for this specific renovation.

Budget-Friendly Brilliance: Finding Affordable Alternatives

Undeterred by the price of our dream lights, we embarked on a diligent search for more budget-friendly alternatives that captured the same essence. Our hunt took us to various local lighting outlets we frequent, and we even kept an opportunistic eye on Craigslist and the ReStore. However, finding three identical, high-quality fixtures that truly resonated with our vision proved to be a challenging endeavor. The market was saturated with options, but rarely did we find that perfect trifecta of style, quality, and affordability.

The turning point arrived serendipitously. Sherry received an email alert about an impending World Market sale – a generous 25% off orders over $150. This timely notification led her to discover these exquisite four-sided glass hanging pendant lanterns. Our excitement was palpable when we realized that, after applying the sale discount, each fixture would cost only $75. This meant we could acquire all three for a total of $225, significantly less than the price of a single one of our original inspiration fixtures! This discovery was a testament to the power of patient searching and smart shopping, allowing us to achieve our desired aesthetic without breaking the bank.

Mastering the Installation: DIY Tips from a Pro

While I’ve covered light fixture installations in previous posts, this particular project offered a couple of invaluable (albeit seemingly small) tricks I learned from observing an electrician at work during a showhouse tour. These insights significantly streamlined the process and are worth sharing for any DIY enthusiast tackling similar home improvement projects.

Trick #1: Preserve with Packaging During Installation

My first revelation was a “well, duh!” moment: always leave the protective packaging on your new light fixtures during installation. In my eagerness to unveil new purchases, my usual habit was to immediately strip away all plastic, cardboard, and styrofoam. However, watching the electrician meticulously work, leaving on any packaging that didn’t interfere with the actual mounting, illuminated the brilliance of this simple strategy. It acts as an invaluable buffer, preventing accidental scratches, dings, or breakage to the delicate finishes and glass components while you maneuver and secure the fixture into place. Of course, the packaging is removed just before connecting power and inserting the bulb, but that initial added layer of protection offers immense peace of mind during the most hands-on part of the process.

Adjusting for Perfect Height: Shortening Chains and Cords

Our home’s standard 8-foot ceilings presented an immediate challenge: the pendants, if left with their full chain length, would hang far too low for comfortable passage. Ideally, we would have loved to let these beautiful fixtures dangle a bit more, but practicality dictated a shorter profile. The solution involved carefully shortening the chain. This delicate task required two pairs of pliers to pry open the individual links. To prevent any unsightly scratches or damage to the fixture’s elegant finish, I thoughtfully wrapped the tips of my pliers in masking tape – a small but crucial detail that preserves the aesthetic integrity of your new purchase.

With the old middle light hanging at about 75 inches from the ground (and awkwardly low for my 6-foot frame, particularly because it was inexplicably larger than the others), we aimed for a slightly higher placement. Our decision was to hang the new, larger-scale lights using just a single chain link. This brought the bottom of each lantern to a comfortable 77 inches from the floor after installation, providing ample clearance and a more harmonious visual line in the hallway. I kept one link aside, but temporarily left a longer string of chain on the fixture, a detail that ties into my second installation trick.

In addition to adjusting the chain, the electrical cord also needed shortening. Using wire cutters, I carefully opened the outer wire cover, pulled it back, and then precisely stripped the ends of the white, black, and green wires, preparing them for a safe and secure connection.

With Sherry lending a crucial hand by supporting the weight of the fixture, I proceeded to connect the exposed wires to their corresponding counterparts in the ceiling. Apologies for the grainy photograph, but for safety reasons, the power was off during this critical step, making proper lighting a bit of a challenge!

Trick #2: The “Hang Low, Then Raise” Method

The second game-changing tip I adopted from the professional electrician was to initially hang the fixture lower than your final desired height, and then gradually raise it. This method offers significant advantages. For most light fixtures, it is considerably easier to shorten the chain or feed excess wire into the ceiling canopy than it is to extend a fixture, especially if you’ve already cut your wires to length. Beyond achieving the perfect height with greater ease, this technique made the entire installation process much more manageable. Sherry didn’t have to strain to hold the light as high, and I benefited from more generous working space between the fixture and the ceiling, preventing cramped and awkward wiring connections.

Once all the electrical connections were securely made and tested, I swapped out the temporary longer chain for my pre-selected single link. The excess wire was then neatly tucked up into the ceiling canopy, and a screwdriver was used to tighten the screw that firmly pinches the wire in place, ensuring everything was snug and aesthetically pleasing.

The Grand Reveal: A Hallway Transformed

Despite these clever tricks, installing all three fixtures still took a fair amount of time, probably around three hours in total. It’s always tricky to estimate precisely, as I’m often slowed down by the need to capture photos for these posts and, in this particular instance, by fielding showhouse-related phone calls. However, the effort was undoubtedly worth it; we are absolutely thrilled with the final result.

Newly installed modern pendant lights in the hallway

Much like the striking light fixture in our downstairs foyer, these new hallway pendants introduce a beautiful high-contrast element to our home’s interior. Their dark finish seamlessly ties into other existing dark accents throughout the space, such as the door hinges, doorknobs, and the rich stained stair rail and runner that leads downstairs. This deliberate coordination creates a more cohesive and sophisticated feel, suggesting thoughtful design rather than haphazard choices. While some might consider the fixtures slightly oversized for the hallway, this is precisely what I love most about them; they make a bold statement and add significant character to what was once a forgettable space.

Beyond Lighting: The Hallway’s Future Evolution

While the new lighting has dramatically elevated the hallway’s aesthetic, we envision even greater transformation. The addition of substantial wainscoting, carefully curated art pieces, and other planned updates will further enhance the space, bringing a much-needed sense of balance and architectural interest. Here’s a glimpse at our remaining to-do list for this area:

  • Reinstall & possibly modify the doors in front of the laundry area to improve their functionality and aesthetic integration.
  • Add elegant crown molding, a detail we anticipate will be challenging given the hallway’s angles, but crucial for a polished finish.
  • Install some nice, thick wainscoting along the lower half of the hallway, which will add significant substance, texture, and visual interest.
  • Curate and hang meaningful art to infuse personality and warmth into the now brighter and more inviting space.

To truly appreciate the extent of this transformation, here’s a “before” shot of the hallway for a stark comparison:

Functionality and Smart Lighting Choices

In terms of functionality, I initially harbored a slight fear that transitioning from three three-bulb fixtures to three single-bulb pendants might result in a darker hallway. However, my concerns were quickly dispelled. The new fixtures accommodate a higher wattage (60W instead of the previous 40W bulbs), and the beautifully crafted glass panels seem to reflect light so effectively that the hallway actually feels significantly brighter. It’s also entirely possible that half of the old bulbs were burnt out, contributing to the perceived dimness, so simply having fully functional lighting made a difference.

Currently, we are using the clear bulbs that came with the fixtures. When illuminated, they cast some intriguing angular shadows on the ceiling, adding a dynamic layer of visual interest. Should we desire a softer, more diffused light and fewer dramatic shadows, we can easily switch them out for frosted bulbs. Our long-term goal, however, is to transition every fixture in our home to energy-efficient LEDs, a move that promises both environmental and financial benefits.

UPDATE! Embracing the LED Revolution: We’ve since made the full transition, updating our entire home to LED lighting. This decision has been incredibly rewarding, not only in terms of massive energy and money savings but also for the sheer convenience they offer – they are truly a lazy person’s best friend, as you rarely, if ever, have to change them! For those curious about our choice, these are our absolute favorite interior LEDs. They provide a beautifully warm and natural glow, avoiding the often harsh or blueish tones found in some other LED options we’ve tested. What’s more, they consume approximately 90% less energy than traditional bulbs, making them an eco-conscious and highly efficient lighting solution for any home.
