The Ever-Evolving Master Bedroom: Our Latest Transformation
Every home tells a story, a narrative woven through gradual changes and thoughtful improvements. While every room in our house undergoes its own unique evolution, our bedrooms, perhaps more than any other space, seem especially prone to this slow-burn decorating process. These personal sanctuaries reflect our changing tastes, needs, and the endless pursuit of comfort and style. We’ve previously chronicled the winding path of our former master bedroom’s journey and even the whimsical transformation of our daughter’s current space. Today, we’re excited to pull back the curtain on the latest chapter in the ongoing evolution of our current master bedroom.
This room, a canvas of personal expression, has seen its fair share of iterations since we first moved in. What started as a blank slate has slowly but surely been molded into a space that increasingly feels like ‘us.’ The beauty of home design lies in its dynamic nature—it’s never truly “finished,” but rather a continuous process of refinement, adaptation, and discovery. Join us as we explore the recent updates that have brought even more comfort, style, and functional elegance to our most cherished retreat.

Starting From Scratch: The Initial State of Our Bedroom
When we first purchased the house, our current master bedroom was, to put it mildly, a blank slate. The entire space, including the walls, ceiling, trim, and even the carpet, was bathed in a uniform, uninspired off-white color. It was a monochromatic expanse that offered little in the way of character or warmth. While it provided a neutral backdrop, it certainly didn’t spark joy or reflect the vibrant personality we envisioned for our sanctuary.

This initial state, while functional, served as a clear indicator that a transformation was needed. We saw not just four walls and a floor, but the potential for a truly inviting and personalized retreat. Our journey began with imagining how this sterile space could evolve into a haven that promoted relaxation, reflected our aesthetic, and functioned seamlessly with our daily lives.
Laying the Foundation: Past Transformations That Paved the Way
Rather than revisiting every single tweak we’ve made over the last three and a half years (yes, it truly has been that long!), let’s pick up where the more significant phases of transformation left off. These foundational changes set the stage for the subtle yet impactful updates we’re sharing today. Early on, we embarked on a series of significant projects that dramatically altered the room’s character and prepared it for its current iteration. We started by laying beautiful hardwood floors, instantly adding warmth, durability, and a touch of classic elegance that carpet simply couldn’t provide.
Following the flooring, we experimented with color, daring to paint the room a dramatic dark blue, which brought a sense of moodiness and sophistication. While we loved the bold statement, we eventually sought a softer, more versatile backdrop, leading us to repaint it a soothing greige—a perfect blend of gray and beige that offers warmth without overwhelming the senses. Throughout these color shifts, we also introduced personal touches like a charming frame gallery, infusing the space with memories and visual interest. These early decisions were crucial, allowing us to understand the room’s potential and guiding us toward its current, refined aesthetic.

The Radiant Upgrade: Finding the Perfect Light Fixture
One of the most noticeable recent transformations in our bedroom has been the introduction of a new light fixture. For a couple of years, we enjoyed a charming brass and glass fixture. While it possessed a certain appeal, we quickly realized it was a tad undersized for the substantial dimensions of our master bedroom. A common design pitfall is misjudging scale, and this was a prime example. The fixture, though lovely, didn’t command the presence or provide the illumination necessary for such a large space, leaving the room feeling somewhat unbalanced and underlit.
However, rather than rushing into a replacement—a mistake we’ve learned to avoid—we decided to embrace the patience strategy. There’s nothing quite like the frustration of swiftly correcting one “wrong thing” only to discover a few months later that your hurried replacement is also not quite right. So, we waited. We enjoyed the existing fixture for what it was, confident that the perfect replacement would reveal itself when the time was right. This philosophy saved us from premature purchases and allowed us to truly discern what the room needed.
Our patience paid off handsomely last December. Our eyes were captivated by a stunning capiz chandelier. What sealed the deal wasn’t just its exquisite design, but also its irresistible holiday sale price—a fantastic $250, marked down from $479! This combination of ideal aesthetics and an undeniable bargain triggered all the right synapses in our brains, flooding us with design inspiration and sending our online shopping fingers into action. The purchase was made with joyful conviction. (For those interested, this particular fixture tends to go in and out of stock, but as of now, it’s available and currently $100 off!)

Why This Chandelier Was “The One”
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, several factors made this capiz chandelier the ideal choice. First, its size was perfectly proportioned for the room, addressing the scale issue of its predecessor. Second, the shiny chrome finish seamlessly integrated with existing elements in the room, such as the floor lamp and the hardware on our nightstands. This thoughtful repetition of finishes is key to successful interior design; we’re firm believers in mixing metals, but only when each finish appears a few times within the space to ensure harmony and intentionality, preventing any element from looking like an accidental outlier. For instance, our dark curtain rods echo the dark frames on our gallery wall, the hardware on our inlay dresser, and even the feet of the accent chair, creating a cohesive visual flow.
Furthermore, our affection for capiz shell fixtures is well-documented. We consider ourselves charter members of “The Capiz Fan Club”! This isn’t our first rodeo with the delicate, iridescent beauty of capiz. Our anniversary frame tradition includes capiz elements, and our dining room boasts its own elegant capiz chandelier, as seen below. The way capiz diffuses light and adds a subtle organic texture makes it an eternally appealing material for us.

The Unboxing and Installation: A Labor of Love
The anticipation for the chandelier’s arrival was palpable, and when the box landed on our doorstep shortly before Christmas, it felt akin to unwrapping a present early. The true “unwrapping” part, however, proved to be an unexpected task. Upon opening the box, we discovered that every single delicate strand of capiz was meticulously wrapped and taped in plastic, a commendable effort to prevent breakage during shipping. While we deeply appreciated the careful packaging, the process of untaping and unfurling each strand, one by one, was quite the endeavor. I attempted to count them all, but I quickly lost track after the bottom two tiers—it felt like hundreds!

Eventually, my arms began to grow numb from the repetitive unwrapping, prompting me to playfully tag Sherry in for relief. My feelings for this new light fixture during that installation process could best be summed up by a thought I’ve had about my children on particularly trying days: “It’s a good thing I love you, because sometimes you’re a lot of work.” Yet, all griping aside, the result was undeniably beautiful. The chandelier, with its three hidden bulbs (a significant upgrade from the single bulb we had before), also dramatically improved the functional lighting in our bedroom, making the space brighter and more inviting.

Elevating Comfort: The Bedroom Furniture Swap
Beyond the radiant glow of our new chandelier, you’ve likely noticed another significant update in our master bedroom: the bed itself. (Before we dive in, a quick note: our beloved philodendron, previously gracing this room, has found a happier home in our downstairs office. It turns out, it wasn’t fond of being directly blasted by our heat vents once winter arrived—a good reminder that sometimes plants need a move for optimal health!).

Our previous bed, an Ikea platform model, supported our mattress solely on slats. While functional, we learned through our extensive mattress research that a mattress resting on a boxspring could offer superior support and longevity. Always seeking ways to maximize our sleep quality and comfort, we decided to get creative. We realized our guest room already housed a traditional boxspring-and-frame setup, making a simple swap an ideal and budget-friendly solution for our master bedroom upgrade.

We were immediately charmed by the new look. The addition of a boxspring, coupled with a bed skirt, lent a sense of substantiality and grounding that the more leggy Ikea platform bed never quite achieved. The skirt provides a clean, finished aesthetic, making the bed feel more like a cohesive piece of furniture rather than just a mattress on a frame. Sherry is currently on the lookout for a light tan linen skirt to perfectly complement our homemade fabric headboard, which would further enhance that desired “grown-up bed” feel. Once the free bed swap was complete, our main task was to rehang our beloved fabric headboard, which we had made a while ago and had previously attached directly to the old bed frame. To achieve a secure and seamless look, I opted for a simple yet highly effective homemade cleat system, hanging it directly onto the wall.
DIY Headboard Installation: A Cleat System for Security and Style
For those looking to securely hang a substantial headboard or other heavy wall decor, a French cleat system is an absolute game-changer. It offers robust support and a clean, hidden attachment method. Here’s how I created and installed ours:

1. Prepare the Cleats: I took two scrap 2×4 inch boards, ensuring they were the same length as the headboard. Using my table saw, I set the blade to a slight angle (around 30-45 degrees) and cut along the length of each board, creating a precise bevel. The goal is to have two matching pieces, each with one angled edge.

2. Attach Wall Cleat: I then attached one of these beveled boards to the wall. It’s crucial to screw it directly into the wall studs for maximum stability, ensuring the angled edge sloped towards the wall (forming a “V” shape with the wall) and that the entire board was perfectly level. This piece will bear the weight of the headboard.

3. Attach Headboard Cleat: Next, I attached the second beveled board to the back of our fabric headboard. For this piece, the angled cut needed to face downwards, creating the inverse “V” shape. This allows it to slip seamlessly and securely into the cleat already mounted on the wall, creating an interlocking mechanism.
This cleat system is our absolute favorite method for achieving a really secure hold on large, heavy objects like our headboard. The interlocking angles distribute weight effectively and prevent any wobbling. Note: I intentionally used thick 2×4 inch boards because our headboard has considerable depth. However, if you’re hanging something thinner or prefer not to cut your own wood, readily available metal cleats offer a convenient and equally secure alternative.
The Finishing Touches and Future Plans
With these two relatively minor yet impactful “evolutions”—the dazzling new chandelier and the upgraded, grounded bed—we’re absolutely loving our master bedroom even more. The space now feels more cohesive, balanced, and truly reflective of the comfortable sanctuary we envisioned. Each thoughtful change has contributed to a room that invites relaxation and personal tranquility.

However, the journey of home decor is rarely complete! Looking at the latest photos, I’m reminded that our gallery wall is overdue for an update. While we did print some fresh snapshots around this time last year, the kids have a remarkable habit of growing on us, meaning a refresh is definitely in order to keep those precious memories current. This continuous process of updating and personalizing ensures our home truly reflects our evolving family life.
And speaking of family, our beloved chihuahua, Burger, wasted no time in giving the room his official seal of approval—specifically, his signature “pillow-sit-of-approval.” It seems we live in a world where we can barely finish photographing our bedroom without a furry supervisor making sure the pillows are adequately squished down for optimal comfort. #whoruntheworld #dogs

Looking Ahead: Embracing a TV-Free Zone
And lest you think this evolution is 100% complete (because when does that ever happen in a real home?!), we’re already contemplating our next big step: ditching the TV in here. We haven’t turned that thing on in almost three years, ever since our son was born, which essentially relegates that entire wall to design purgatory. Removing the television will not only free up valuable wall space but also align with our goal of making the bedroom an even more tranquil, distraction-free zone for rest and relaxation. While I might jokingly suggest a rock climbing wall for that empty space, something tells me Sherry will have a more aesthetically pleasing, and certainly more serene, vision in mind.
We hope this glimpse into our latest bedroom evolution inspires you to continually refine and personalize your own living spaces. Home design is a journey, not a destination, and embracing that process can lead to truly joyful and comfortable results.
