Exterior Home Transformations: Enhancing Curb Appeal and Outdoor Living
The Front Yard (25% complete)

Done:
- **Magnolia Tree Limbed Up:** We strategically limbed up the large magnolia tree, not only enhancing its majestic appearance but also allowing more natural light to reach the house and front garden beds. This greatly improved the visual balance of the yard.
- **Obstructing Bushes Removed:** The overgrown bushes that once obscured the house’s charming facade have been cleared, immediately boosting our home’s curb appeal and revealing its true architectural character. This was a vital first step in improving the home’s exterior.
- **Garden Beds Updated and Landscaping Added:** We’ve made significant strides in revitalizing three of the ten garden beds, introducing new plant varieties and thoughtful landscaping designs that complement the house’s style and seasonal interest.
To Do:
- **Extensive Planting and Trimming:** Our front yard still holds immense potential. We plan to transplant existing flora, introduce new plants, and meticulously trim vegetation across the remaining seven garden beds, transforming the entire space into a cohesive and vibrant landscape. This involves careful planning for drought-resistant and native species.
- **Roofline Architectural Enhancement:** A key future project involves modifying the front roofline. By adding subtle peaks, we aim to introduce architectural dimension and create a more harmonious aesthetic that aligns with the unique shape of the house from the rear. This will be a significant undertaking, but one we believe will dramatically impact the home’s exterior grandeur and overall appeal.
The Front Porch/House Facade (35% complete)

Done:
- **Porch Furnishings Re-homed:** We successfully furnished the front porch with beloved pieces from our previous home’s porch, instantly making the space feel welcoming and lived-in. This allowed us to enjoy the porch immediately.
- **Shrubs and Flowers Planted:** To add life and color, we’ve carefully selected and planted a variety of shrubs and flowers, creating an inviting entrance that changes with the seasons.
- **Front Door Painted Vibrant Yellow:** A bold stroke of yellow paint has completely revitalized our front door, offering a cheerful and memorable first impression. This simple yet impactful DIY change made a huge difference to our home’s character.
To Do:
- **Porch Column Transformation:** We envision framing out the existing ornate and curvy porch columns to create chunky, square pillars. This architectural update will lend a more substantial and modern feel to the facade, aligning with our overall design aesthetic.
- **Concrete Porch Floor Staining:** To elevate the porch’s aesthetic, we plan to stain the concrete floor. This will add depth, a polished finish, and better define the outdoor living space, moving beyond its current utilitarian appearance.
- **Exterior Repaint with Moody Gray and Crisp White:** A major aesthetic overhaul awaits the entire house siding, which we plan to paint a sophisticated, moody gray. The existing cream trim will be transformed into a crisp, clean white, creating a striking contrast and contemporary appeal that significantly updates the home’s exterior.
- **Adding Window Boxes and Shutters:** To further enhance the charming facade, we intend to install window boxes around all windows, bringing in more greenery and visual interest. Additionally, shutters will be added to the side and back windows, matching those currently only on the front, for a cohesive and finished look across the entire house.
The Carport/Garage (0% complete)

Done:
- **No Progress to Report:** This area remains a blank slate, representing significant future potential for improved functionality and aesthetic integration with the rest of our home.
To Do:
- **Carport to Garage Conversion:** Our most anticipated project for this space is its conversion into a fully functional, enclosed garage. We’re carefully planning the ideal window and door configurations to ensure both practicality and aesthetic harmony with the rest of the house, envisioning a secure and spacious parking solution.
- **Trellis Arch for New Garage Door:** Once the new garage door is in place, we dream of adding a beautiful trellis arch around it. This will allow lush, climbing plants to flourish, integrating the structure seamlessly into the landscape and creating a truly picturesque and welcoming entrance to the garage.
- **Statement Light Fixture Installation:** The existing light fixture will be replaced with something truly remarkable – perhaps a large, lantern-style piece that casts a welcoming glow and makes a significant architectural statement, complementing the new garage design.
Interior Living Spaces: Comfort, Functionality, and Style

- **New Sectional Sofa Acquired:** A comfortable new sectional provides ample seating, serving as the perfect centerpiece for relaxation, family gatherings, and entertaining guests.

- **Console Table Built:** We successfully DIYed a custom console table, offering both practical storage and a stylish surface for decor and media components.
- **Larger TV Installed:** An upgrade to a larger television significantly enhances our entertainment experience, making the living room an even more enjoyable hub for family movie nights and sports.
To Do:

Our goal is to fill these spaces with curated art pieces that reflect our style and introduce functional furniture in the corners near the kitchen, enhancing both aesthetics and usability. This includes comfortable accent chairs or small tables.
- **DIY Media Cabinet Upgrade:** We plan to custom-build or upcycle a larger, more sophisticated media cabinet. This will be perfectly suited for our new, bigger TV, offering improved storage solutions for electronics and concealing unsightly wires, creating a tidier look.
- **Tall Armoire/Bookcase Addition:** To add vertical interest and additional storage, we envision installing a tall armoire or a bespoke bookcase-style cabinet on the wall with the sofa, particularly in the currently empty area by the window. This will add architectural presence and display opportunities.
- **French Door Conversion (Three Doors):** A major architectural enhancement involves replacing three standard doors – including the one in the hallway that leads to the deck – with elegant French doors. This will dramatically increase natural light flow, create more sophisticated transitions between spaces, and enhance the home’s overall architectural charm.
- **Double-Sided Fireplace Integration:** We plan to transform the existing fireplace in the kitchen into a stunning double-sided fireplace. This will allow its warmth and ambiance to be enjoyed from both the kitchen and the living room, creating a cozy and luxurious focal point for both central living spaces.
- **Coffered Ceiling Installation:** To achieve a more luxurious and architectural effect, we aspire to convert the existing ceiling beams into a full coffered ceiling. This will create striking box-like patterns that elevate the room’s grandeur and add significant visual texture to the ceiling.
- **Floor Refinishing:** Down the line, refinishing the hardwood floors throughout the living room will be essential to restore their original beauty, repair any wear and tear, and create a seamless, polished look that flows consistently through the main living areas.

To Do:
- **Addressing Bare Walls:** Despite significant progress, some walls still await artistic touches. We plan to adorn them with inspiring art or functional shelving to complete the room’s design and personalize the space further.
- **Window Treatment Installation:** Essential for privacy, light control, and adding a soft layer to the room’s decor, window treatments are high on our list to complete the office’s polished look.
- **French Doors Between Dining Room and Office:** To introduce both architectural elegance and practical privacy, we intend to install French doors between the dining room and the office. This will allow for flexible open-concept or secluded working environments, depending on our needs.
- **Floor Refinishing (Eventually):** Ultimately, we’d love to refinish the floors in this space, bringing a fresh, cohesive finish that matches the updated aesthetic of the entire room. This will contribute to a seamless flow throughout the home.
The Hall Bathroom (5% complete)

Done:
- **Shower Curtain Hung Higher:** Raising the shower curtain to ceiling height instantly created an illusion of more space and added a touch of hotel-like luxury, making the small bathroom feel significantly larger.
- **Window Trim for Balance:** We added window trim, not only to enhance visual balance and architectural detail but also ingeniously to conceal a small demo hole, a clever trick in renovation that smoothed out an imperfection.
- **New Light Fixture Above Mirror:** A modern and stylish light fixture has been installed above the mirror, providing improved illumination and a contemporary aesthetic that updates the basic builder-grade fixture.
To Do:
- **Walls Painted:** A fresh coat of paint will instantly revitalize the space and set the tone for the rest of the updates, creating a clean and inviting atmosphere.
- **Mirror Framed:** Framing the existing mirror will elevate its appearance, giving it a more custom and polished look, transforming it from a simple mirror into a decorative feature.
- **Art Hung:** Introducing carefully selected art pieces will add personality, visual interest, and a touch of sophistication to the bathroom, making it feel less utilitarian.

- **Window Treatment Added:** A tasteful window treatment will provide essential privacy while enhancing the room’s decor and adding a soft, layered element.
- **Door Knobs and Hinges Replaced/Sprayed:** Updating the old, worn door knobs and hinges, either by replacing them or giving them a fresh spray-paint finish, will complete the cohesive look and modernize the hardware.
- **Extensive Accessorizing:** Our favorite part! We’re excited to accessorize the bathroom with thoughtful details – from plush towels to decorative items and functional storage – to make it truly sparkle, feel complete, and provide a luxurious experience for guests.
The Big Hallway (90% complete)

Done:
- **Frame Collage and Console Table:** We are incredibly pleased with our curated frame collage and the elegant console table that lives in this space. Together, they create a stunning focal point, reflecting our personal style and making the hallway feel like an intentional part of the home. This area feels largely complete and requires no major interventions.
To Do:
- **Patterned Runner Installation:** Adding a vibrant, patterned runner down the length of the hallway would introduce texture, color, and a sense of warmth underfoot, complementing the existing decor and providing a soft landing. This would also help protect the floors in a high-traffic area.
- **Floor Refinishing (Eventually):** As part of a broader floor refinishing project throughout the home, this hallway’s hardwood floors will eventually be restored to their pristine condition, ensuring a seamless and polished look throughout the main living spaces.
The Small Hallway (0% complete)

Done:
- **No Progress to Report:** This compact space currently stands as an untouched canvas, awaiting its transformation. It represents a significant opportunity to add architectural detail and personality to a transitional zone.
To Do:
- **Wainscoting Addition:** Installing wainscoting will introduce architectural interest and a classic charm to this narrow space, protecting the lower walls from scuffs and adding visual depth and texture.
- **Walls Painted or Wallpapered:** Above the wainscoting, we’ll either paint the walls a complementary color for a subtle look or introduce a beautiful wallpaper to create a distinct and inviting aesthetic that makes a statement in this small space.
- **Crown Molding Installation:** Adding crown molding will provide a polished finish, connecting the walls to the ceiling with elegant detail and completing the trim work.
- **Art Hung:** Thoughtfully selected art will personalize the hallway, making it feel less like a mere transitional space and more like an intentional, decorated part of the home.
- **Light Fixture Replacement:** Updating the light fixture will not only improve illumination in this often dimly lit area but also enhance the overall style and ambiance of the hallway.
- **Solid Paneled Door Upgrade:** The old hollow core doors will be replaced with solid paneled ones, significantly improving sound insulation, adding a more substantial, high-quality feel, and enhancing the home’s overall craftsmanship.
- **Door Knobs and Hinges Replaced/Sprayed:** A fresh look for the door knobs and hinges, either through replacement or spray painting, will tie together all the new elements, ensuring a cohesive and updated design.

- **Walls Painted:** A fresh coat of paint has brightened the dining room, creating an inviting backdrop for meals and gatherings, providing a clean canvas for our decor.
- **Built-ins Painted Dark Teal:** The back of the built-in shelves were painted a deep, dark teal, adding a dramatic pop of color and effectively highlighting decorative items and books displayed within.
- **Curtains Made:** Custom curtains were crafted and hung, providing both privacy and a sophisticated frame for the windows, adding softness and texture to the room.
- **Large Round Dining Table Acquired:** A spacious round dining table was chosen, perfectly accommodating our large family and fostering intimate conversations during meals, promoting a sense of togetherness.
- **Art Hung:** Carefully selected art pieces adorn the walls, injecting personality and artistic flair into the space, making it feel uniquely ours.
- **Buffet and Yard Sale Art Introduced:** A charming, chippy old painted buffet now graces a wall, topped with unique yard sale art, adding character and a touch of vintage appeal that sparks conversation.
To Do:
- **Entryway Area Definition:** The entryway area that flows into the dining room is still a work in progress. We need to add more art, furnishings, and accessories to fully “define” this transitional space, making it feel intentional and welcoming rather than just a pass-through.
- **Personalizing Yard Sale Art:** While the yard sale art above the buffet was a great find for size and price, we feel it currently has a “hotel-ish” vibe. Our goal is to personalize it further, perhaps through reframing or subtle artistic modifications, to better reflect our unique style.
- **Show-Stopping Light Fixture:** The dining table awaits a magnificent, show-stopping light fixture. This will serve as a central decorative element, casting beautiful light, enhancing the room’s ambiance for every meal, and becoming a true focal point.
- **Addressing the Chair Dilemma:** Our dining chairs, whether frumpily slipcovered or not, aren’t our dream chairs. We’re on the lookout for the perfect set that combines comfort, style, and durability for our family’s long-term needs, a key upgrade for the space.
- **Giant Lazy Susan for Table:** To enhance functionality during dinners, especially when hosting, we plan to build a large lazy susan for the center of the table. This will make sharing dishes effortless and enjoyable for everyone, making entertaining more practical.

- **Art Hung:** A few pieces of art were hung, adding personality and making the laundry room feel less utilitarian and more like an integrated, cheerful part of our home.
- **Clothespin Chandelier Made:** A unique, DIY clothespin chandelier was crafted and installed, adding a whimsical and charming touch that is truly one-of-a-kind and serves as a delightful conversation starter.
- **Ironing Board Hung on Wall:** For ultimate space-saving and convenience, the ironing board was securely mounted on the wall, keeping it easily accessible yet neatly tucked away when not in use.
To Do:
- **Window Treatment Consideration:** We’re currently debating adding a final window treatment. While the frosted door provides ample privacy, a simple Roman shade or cafe curtain might add an extra layer of softness and a finished touch to this nearly complete space. This room is our furthest along, perhaps due to its compact 3.5-foot width – a small victory, but a victory nonetheless!

- **Art Added:** Thoughtfully chosen art pieces were hung, infusing the kitchen with personality and charm, making it feel more like a living space than just a utilitarian zone.
- **Sitting Area Rug Introduced:** A rug was placed in the sitting area by the fireplace, defining this zone and adding a layer of coziness for relaxation and conversation within the larger kitchen space.
To Do:
- **Peninsula Finishing Trim:** To give the peninsula a truly finished look, we plan to add decorative trim or paneling to its back, ensuring every angle is polished and integrated seamlessly with the overall design.
- **Window Treatments Over Sink:** A fabric Roman shade or a similar treatment over the sink window will add softness, color, and a touch of privacy, complementing the kitchen’s aesthetic.
- **Pantry Side Message Board:** We’re considering adding a message board or chalkboard to the side of the pantry, creating a functional and fun spot for notes, grocery lists, or family messages.
- **Crown Molding Enhancement:** The existing crown molding in the kitchen is thinner than in other rooms. We aim to beef it up to match the more substantial molding in the dining room, living room, and office, creating a unified architectural detail throughout the main living areas.
- **Cozying Up Fireplace Sitting Area:** Further accessorizing and furnishing the sitting area by the fireplace will enhance its comfort and inviting ambiance, making it a true relaxation spot within the kitchen.
- **Cabinet Top Trim (Reconsideration):** We previously attempted to add trim to the top of the cabinets but weren’t satisfied with the result. We’re open to revisiting this idea to see if a different approach can achieve the desired finished and custom look.
- **Hood Enhancement:** As mentioned in our reveal post, we’re still contemplating how to “beef up” the range hood further, potentially adding more substantial millwork for a grander statement and more integrated look.
- **Wall Repainting (Wild Card):** Repainting the kitchen walls is a big wild card. We often go back and forth on this, so the final decision will depend on how the overall design evolves and whether a new color can enhance the space even further.
- **Fireplace Refacing:** Our long-term vision includes refacing the fireplace to incorporate a chunky, wrap-around wood mantel and a beautiful stone or tile surround and hearth, transforming it into a magnificent focal point that anchors the sitting area.
The Playroom (0% complete)

Done:
- **No Progress to Report:** This room is currently a hub for various hidden projects and items awaiting redistribution, making it a true blank canvas for its future purpose as a vibrant child’s space.
To Do:
- **Complete Overhaul:** This room requires a full overhaul. First, we need to clear out all the “secret book projects” (which we can’t auction off for charity until the book’s release in the fall) and sort through other items to yard sale, reuse, or list on Craigslist. This initial decluttering is a massive undertaking.
- **Paint, Furnish, Accessorize:** Once cleared, the room will be painted, furnished, and accessorized with a child’s needs and imagination in mind. This space is planned to eventually become Clara’s “big girl” room, allowing a possible future sibling to move into the nursery, offering flexibility as our family grows.
- **Daybed Retrofit for Trundle:** A specific goal is to retrofit our existing daybed in the playroom. We want to make it look built-in and incorporate a trundle bed underneath, allowing it to comfortably sleep two children when needed – perfect for future sleepovers and accommodating guests!
- **Door Knobs and Hinges Replaced/Sprayed:** Updating these small details will contribute to the room’s fresh, polished look and ensure all hardware is functional and aesthetically cohesive.
- **Floor Refinishing (Eventually):** Refinishing the floors will be a key step in completing this room’s transformation into a vibrant, child-friendly space, providing a durable and clean surface for play.

- **Play Kitchen Built:** A custom play kitchen was built for Clara, providing endless hours of imaginative play and fostering creativity in her own space.
- **Closet Redo with Reading Nook:** The closet was creatively redesigned by stamping the walls and sewing a cozy beanbag, transforming it into a delightful reading nook – a cherished private space for her to unwind with books.
To Do:
- **More Art for Bare Walls:** A few bare walls still await decorative touches. We plan to hang more art, perhaps some of Clara’s own creations or inspiring prints, to personalize the space further and spark her imagination.
- **Crown Molding Addition:** Adding crown molding will give the room a more refined, finished edge, elevating its overall design from a child’s room to a truly sophisticated space that grows with her.
- **Ceiling Paint or Stencil:** To add an extra element of fun and design, we’re considering painting or stenciling the ceiling, making it a delightful surprise and a unique feature when looking up.
- **Floor Refinishing:** Refinishing the floors will ensure a fresh, clean, and durable surface for playing, crawling, and all the activities a child’s room endures.
- **Door Knobs and Hinges Replaced/Sprayed:** Updating these small hardware details will complete the cohesive design of the room and ensure all elements are functional and aesthetically pleasing.
- **Future Evolution for New Baby:** We recognize that this room’s design will entirely evolve if a second baby eventually uses it as a nursery and Clara moves into her “big girl” room. (And nope, we’re not expecting, Mom!) This long-term flexibility is part of our planning for family growth.
The Sunroom (0% complete)

Done:
- **No Progress to Report:** This room currently serves as a temporary holding area for old furniture from our previous house and other book-related items, making it a clean slate for future renovation and a prime opportunity for transformation.
To Do:
- **Walls Painted:** The walls, which extend to a lofted ceiling, will be painted to create a bright, cohesive look. This will be an interesting challenge due to the height, requiring careful planning and execution.
- **Brick Wall Whitewash:** The existing brick wall will be whitewashed. This will preserve its rustic character while softening its jarring orangey-red tone, making it feel lighter, more integrated, and contemporary within the sunroom’s aesthetic.
- **Room Furnishing:** We plan to furnish the room, likely utilizing many pieces we already own, to create a comfortable and inviting sun-filled retreat perfect for relaxation, reading, or enjoying the outdoor views.
- **Window Treatments for Privacy:** To allow for optional privacy and controlled light, window treatments will be added to the numerous windows in the sunroom, balancing openness with seclusion.
- **Fan/Light Fixture Upgrade:** The current fan will be replaced with either a more modern, efficient ceiling fan or a stylish light fixture we love, especially since the room already has an AC unit to keep it cool.
- **French Door Replacement:** The existing doors will be replaced with elegant French doors, enhancing the room’s connection to the outdoors and improving its aesthetic appeal and functionality.
- **Open Shelving or Built-in Addition:** The walls currently lack architectural interest. We intend to add open shelving or a built-in unit, possibly a large bookcase, to provide both storage and visual appeal, making the most of the vertical space.
- **Art Hung:** Curated art pieces will be hung to personalize the space and add character, making the sunroom feel truly lived-in and reflective of our style.
- **Fun Ceiling Detail:** Given the sloped ceiling, we want to create a unique and fun detail, such as hanging a multitude of lanterns or paper pendants, to draw the eye upward and add whimsical charm, turning the ceiling into a feature.
- **Flooring Replacement:** Eventually, the old beige tiles will be replaced with new flooring that better suits our style and the room’s overall design, providing a fresh, durable, and appealing surface.

To Do:
- **Window to French Door Conversion:** The window that currently overlooks the deck will be converted into a beautiful French door, allowing for direct access to the outdoors and significantly increasing natural light and architectural interest.
- **Furniture for Bare Wall:** The wall across from the bed remains bare. We plan to introduce furniture, such as a dresser or chest, to add storage and complete the room’s design, making it feel more furnished and functional.
- **Ceiling Raise to Roofline:** A dream project involves raising the ceiling to follow the roofline, creating a high, peaked ceiling that will significantly enhance the room’s spaciousness, add architectural drama, and create a ton of cozy ambiance.
- **Sink Vanity Update/Paint:** The existing sink vanity will be updated, likely through painting and potentially new hardware, to align with the room’s refreshed aesthetic and provide a cohesive look.
- **Tile Back Wall of Sink Nook:** We are considering tiling the entire back wall of the sink nook with something “dreamy and gleaming.” As it’s a small space, this luxurious upgrade will be relatively inexpensive but highly impactful, adding a spa-like feel.
- **Long Bench for Foot of Bed:** Our current bench at the foot of the bed is too small and dark. We plan to make, buy, or refurbish a longer bench that better fits the scale of the bed and our desired aesthetic, adding functional seating or a place for throws.
- **French Doors Between Sink Nook and Room:** For added architectural detail and a touch of elegance, we may add French doors between the sink nook and the main bedroom area, providing visual separation while maintaining an open feel.
- **Door Knobs and Hinges Replaced/Sprayed:** Updating these small hardware elements will contribute to the room’s polished and cohesive look, ensuring all details are up to date.
- **Closet Paint/Wallpaper & Molding:** The closet will receive a makeover with fresh paint or even wallpaper. We’ll also amp up the built-ins with molding to add more polish and a custom, luxurious feel to the storage space.

It’s important to remember that our home renovation journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Our first house took us 4.5 years to complete, and we anticipate a similar multi-year timeline for this ambitious project. There’s no need to rush; we’ve learned to truly embrace and enjoy the process, celebrating each small victory and tackling projects one day at a time. And honestly, is there anything more satisfying than crossing an item off your to-do list? The feeling of accomplishment is truly motivating!
Regarding our “method to the madness” for project order, there isn’t a strict formula. We generally follow our mood and energy levels, addressing whatever sparks our enthusiasm next, unless there’s an urgent safety concern or an extreme-urgency task that takes precedence. This fluid approach allows us to jump between rooms and types of projects, from major structural changes to small decorative updates, keeping our energy high and preventing burnout. We avoid feeling forced into tasks we’re not quite ready for, ensuring that each project feels like an exciting endeavor rather than a chore. This flexibility is key to maintaining our passion for DIY home improvement.
For larger, more significant projects that require substantial saving and meticulous planning, we let them simmer in the back of our minds. This allows us ample time to solidify our approach, research materials, gather resources, and get comfortable with the scope, minimizing potential “shoulda-woulda-coulda” regrets later on. These ambitious long-term goals fuel our motivation to squirrel away funds, turning dreams into tangible realities. Simultaneously, seeing a steady stream of smaller, “bite-sized” tasks being completed keeps us incredibly motivated. These quick wins remind us that consistent progress, no matter how small, adds up to significant transformation. After a major renovation, we often welcome a breather, dedicating time to smaller, satisfying updates. Other times, we’re energized by the momentum and jump straight into planning the next big thing. Every home improvement journey is unique, and this flexible, mood-driven approach works best for us.
Now, we’d love to hear from you! How do you manage your house to-do lists? Are they meticulously organized on your phone, or are you more old-school with a physical notebook? What’s your secret for deciding which project to tackle next? Do you have a “method to your madness” when it comes to home improvement, or do you also go with the flow?
