Living in a Tiny House: Real-Life Challenges and Benefits

If you’ve ever imagined (or dreaded) living in a tiny house, you’re in good company. People have strong and varied opinions about small-space living, so we reached out to a couple who have lived in an 188-square-foot home for more than two years to answer all the questions you’ve been wondering about. We learned what’s delightful, what’s challenging, and everything in between. Also: we hit a sentimental milestone at our house, and Sherry has finally embraced a decorating trend she’s been curious about.

What’s New

Son's new daybed

  • We’re planning a full blog post this week with photos and details about our son’s bedroom update. Above is a sneak peek at his new big-boy bed — a daybed that’s working really well for the space.
  • A complete source list for the room will be in the upcoming post, but here are a few quick items: his sheets, the wall sconces, a gray bolster pillow, the bee pillows, and the artwork. The wall color is Going To The Chapel and the built-ins are painted Senora Gray (both by Benjamin Moore).
  • Before the update, the room was largely unchanged since 2014 — except for a recent discovery that our son could peel off the “T”-shaped wall decals. That prompted a refresh sooner than expected, and the decals are finally gone.

We’re Digging

Pink letterboard

  • Sherry picked up a 10″ x 10″ pink letterboard for the beach house that we love. It’s a compact, playful accent that’s available in several colors.
  • For letterboard inspiration, Letterfolk’s Instagram is full of creative ideas. They offer boards in multiple sizes and frame styles for different needs.
  • For smart lighting, we tested a starter pack that included two bulbs and a hub. It was a thoughtful gift under our family’s $50 limit and may be worth watching for price drops.
  • To clarify the Philips Hue lineup: the White & Color Ambiance bulbs offer full color and adjustable white tones; White Ambiance bulbs allow variable white tones; and White bulbs provide a single soft-white option. The bulbs we chose have a standard shape that fits familiar fixtures.
