Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on what it’s truly like navigating daily routines as a family of four, all sharing a single bathroom. We’ll explore the humorous challenges, the ingenious solutions we’ve developed, and our exciting future plans for expanding our home’s functionality with an additional bathroom. But beyond our personal story, this discussion inevitably leads us to a fascinating cultural phenomenon: America’s unique and ever-growing obsession with bathrooms. We’ll unpack why, over the past five decades, the average number of bathrooms per American household has remarkably doubled, reflecting shifts in lifestyle, comfort, and perceived luxury.

What’s New: Elevating Comfort and Functionality in Our Home

Life in our home has recently undergone a delightful transformation, particularly in the realm of comfort and organization. After weeks of embracing a minimalist, floor-mattress lifestyle – a phase we can now happily look back on – we’ve finally invested in proper beds for every member of our family. This upgrade isn’t just about escaping the floor; it’s a strategic move to enhance both the aesthetics and the practical utility of our smaller home.

  • Our Master Bedroom’s Smart Solution: For our own sanctuary, we chose a simple, yet elegant wood platform bed. This wasn’t a random choice; it was a deliberate decision to introduce both style and significant functionality. The design allows us to easily add a headboard down the road – we’re currently contemplating a DIY project, perhaps building or upholstering one to perfectly match our evolving decor. One of the most compelling features of this platform bed is the ample under-bed storage it provides, a crucial aspect in a smaller home. Currently, this space is neatly organizing picture frames and artwork, ready for our future guest house/shed addition. We also appreciate that it’s crafted from real wood, offering the flexibility to stain it later if we ever decide to adjust its color (ours, we’ve noticed, leans a bit more towards an orange tone than depicted online, which is an interesting detail for those considering it). This bed isn’t just furniture; it’s a foundation for future design and a smart storage solution.
  • Kids’ Rooms Transformed with Clever Beds: Our children’s rooms also received strategic upgrades, with two distinct beds chosen for their unique storage capabilities and space-saving designs.

  • The first, a versatile bed available on both Target and Overstock, has given our daughter the gift of organized living with three sides of integrated under-bed storage. This clever design is perfect for stashing books, board games, and various treasures, keeping her room tidy and maximizing every inch of available space.
  • The second, the bottom bed pictured, was selected for our son’s room. Its standout feature comprises two huge drawers, masterfully designed to wrangle toys and extra clothes. This robust storage solution ensures that his room remains a functional and clutter-free zone, promoting a sense of calm amidst the usual chaos of childhood. These beds are more than just sleeping surfaces; they are integral components of our strategy to create organized, comfortable, and highly functional spaces within our home.

Decoding Decor Trends: A State-by-State Look at America’s Favorite Design Styles

Ever wondered what interior design styles are capturing the hearts (and Instagram feeds) of homeowners across different states? We delve into a fascinating study that reveals the most popular decor trends, providing a unique snapshot of America’s diverse aesthetic preferences. This isn’t just about pretty pictures; it’s about understanding regional tastes and the cultural influences shaping our homes.

  • We uncovered the full article from Angie’s List, a comprehensive Instagram deep dive that meticulously analyzed interior design posts to identify trending styles in each state. While the article offers a broad overview, it’s worth noting to overlook specific labeling discrepancies for states like Connecticut and New Jersey to focus on the broader trends. The findings are surprisingly diverse, showcasing everything from modern farmhouse charm in some states to minimalist Scandinavian aesthetics or vibrant bohemian styles in others. This geographical distribution of decor preferences highlights how local culture, climate, and lifestyle subtly influence our interior choices, turning our homes into reflections of our surroundings.
  • Beyond just identifying styles, the study also explored which states are the most prolific posters of their home interiors on Instagram. While we didn’t get into the specifics on the episode, the data suggests a fascinating concentration: apparently, just three states account for a staggering 40% of all interior design posts on the platform! It raises questions about population density adjustments, but it definitely points to certain regions having a particularly enthusiastic design community. This insight underscores the powerful role social media plays in shaping and reflecting our collective design consciousness, influencing trends, and fostering inspiration across the nation. Understanding these trends can be incredibly useful, whether you’re decorating your own home, working as an interior designer, or simply curious about the evolving landscape of American decor.

America’s Unique Relationship with Bathrooms: From Utility to Luxury

It’s no secret that Americans have a particular affinity for their bathrooms, a fascination that transcends mere functionality. This segment explores the intriguing journey of the American bathroom, tracing its evolution from a purely utilitarian space to a highly valued, often luxurious sanctuary within the home. We’re particularly interested in the statistic that over the past 50 years, the number of bathrooms per American has doubled – a testament to a profound cultural shift.

A beautifully designed modern bathroom, reflecting America's growing obsession with luxury and multiple bathrooms in homes.
  • For a deeper dive into this phenomenon, we highly recommend The Atlantic article entitled“America Is Overrun With Bathrooms.” This piece provides a captivating overview of the bathroom’s “glow up,” detailing its transformation from the smallest, often-hidden room in the house to a key selling point and a primary indicator of a home’s value. The article explores how societal shifts, an emphasis on personal space, hygiene, and the desire for en-suite convenience have fueled this expansion. What was once a shared, functional necessity has evolved into a personal retreat, a spa-like escape, and a symbol of modern comfort and luxury, making multiple bathrooms a standard expectation in new constructions and a major renovation priority.
  • Speaking of future plans, we’re excited to share a sneak peek into our own upcoming bathroom project. While a more detailed post will follow, we can reveal that we’re planning to add an en-suite bath directly off our bedroom. The vision involves utilizing a portion of our existing porch space. Our attachment to the beautiful kitchen window behind where the kids are currently sitting is strong, so our current leaning is to use just half of the porch, allowing us to preserve that lovely double window. This strategic approach ensures we gain the desired en-suite convenience without sacrificing the charming architectural features we love, balancing new functionality with existing character. This project exemplifies how careful planning can lead to creative solutions for maximizing space and enhancing liveability.

  • As promised on the episode, we wanted to share links to a couple of our recent bathroom renovation projects, offering inspiration and practical insights. If you missed them earlier this year, be sure to check out our extensive master bathroom overhaul in our previous house. This project showcased a dramatic transformation, from conceptual design to the final luxurious touches. For those looking for a less intensive but equally impactful update, we also invite you to explore the smaller, demo-free refresh of our hall bathroom (pictured below). This project demonstrated how significant aesthetic improvements can be achieved without major structural changes, proving that a thoughtful refresh can be just as rewarding as a complete renovation.

We’re Digging: Amplifying Black Voices and Supporting Black-Owned Businesses

In this segment, “We’re Digging,” we shine a light on crucial initiatives and recommendations that resonate deeply with us, focusing on social impact, powerful storytelling, and enriching our lives through diverse perspectives. This week, we’re particularly passionate about amplifying Black voices and supporting Black-owned businesses, a commitment that extends far beyond a single conversation.

  • We urge you to explore our Instagram profile page, specifically the Make Change highlight circles. When we recorded this podcast, there was just one, but our community’s incredible response and our continued research have led to the creation of three packed highlight circles. These highlights are treasure troves of links to amazing Black-owned businesses that deserve your support. From home decor and fashion to beauty and food, these businesses offer exceptional products and services, and by supporting them, we contribute to economic empowerment and a more equitable marketplace.
  • Our dedication to this cause is ongoing. We are actively compiling a comprehensive blog post to catalog these 300+ shops and small businesses. Here’s the evolving catalog we’ve put together so far, a living document that will continue to grow as we discover more incredible businesses. This isn’t a temporary initiative; we’re committed to highlighting shops we love for Father’s Day, the holidays, and beyond, making this a foundational part of our content strategy. Our goal is to make it easier for our audience to discover and support these vital enterprises, fostering a culture of conscious consumption.
  • Beyond commerce, we also champion powerful narratives. If you haven’t yet read Trevor Noah’s autobiography, Born A Crime, we wholeheartedly recommend it. Noah’s storytelling is a masterful blend of profound depth and unexpected humor, often eliciting both tears and laughter within the same page. It’s a compelling read that offers unique insights into his experiences growing up in apartheid-era South Africa. It’s not surprising, given its acclaim, that it frequently appears to be back-ordered in many places, a testament to its widespread appeal and impact.
  • In the outro of this episode, we also shared a selection of podcasts featuring Black hosts or those that deeply explore Black stories. Expanding your podcast feed with these voices offers rich perspectives and invaluable storytelling. Here are a few to consider for your next listen:
