We know many of you have been patiently waiting for our exciting nursery makeover project to kick off. And rest assured, it’s still very much on our radar! However, life – and homeownership – often throws unexpected curveballs, and our plans have taken a slight, albeit thrilling, detour. The third bedroom, which is destined to become our little one’s sanctuary, will indeed transform, but not quite yet. While we had envisioned it as a blank canvas awaiting our creative touch, it currently serves a very different, and rather chaotic, purpose.
Our Nursery Dream Takes a Backseat to Bathroom Reality
Normally, this soon-to-be-nursery space looks something like this: a relatively tidy, if unassuming, spare room ready for its next chapter. It’s a clean slate, full of potential, waiting for us to dive into paint swatches, furniture assembly, and adorable decor decisions. We often dream about the peaceful haven it will become, a place filled with warmth and joy for our growing family. But as many homeowners can attest, the path to domestic bliss is rarely linear, especially when embarking on ambitious DIY projects that require careful staging and planning. We were all set to begin sketching out floor plans and browsing crib designs, but circumstances have redirected our immediate focus.

Today, if you were to peek inside, you’d find a scene that tells a very different story. What was once a peaceful corner of our home has been transformed into a temporary holding zone, a workshop, and frankly, a bit of a disaster area. It’s a stark contrast to the calm we aspire to create, a testament to the real, unvarnished process of home renovation. We confess, it’s quite the mess, and yes, it can be a little embarrassing to share. Yet, we’ve found that many of our readers actually find comfort in these candid glimpses into the occasional chaos of our lives, realizing they’re not alone in their own home improvement journeys. This current state isn’t random; it’s ground zero for our latest, most ambitious, and absolutely essential pre-nursery undertaking: a complete and total bathroom remodel.

We’re not just talking about a cosmetic refresh here. This is a full-blown “gut job” – ripping everything out down to the studs. Imagine the sound of a mini jackhammer echoing through our 1950s ranch house; yes, we’ve even had to rent one of those! The level of commitment and excitement for this project is through the roof. It’s a monumental task, but one we’ve long anticipated and are now enthusiastically tackling head-on. This renovation, while demanding, promises to significantly improve the functionality and value of our beloved home, making it a much more comfortable space for our expanding family. The decision wasn’t made lightly, but after years of small fixes and constant awareness of underlying issues, we knew a complete overhaul was the only truly sustainable solution.
Why the Urgency? Unveiling the Flaws Beneath the Charm
For those of you who’ve been keeping up with our weekend sneak peeks on Twitter and Facebook, you’ve probably heard some of the exciting (and occasionally terrifying) sounds of our demolition efforts. But before we delve further into the nitty-gritty of swinging hammers and dust clouds, it’s crucial to explain why we decided to embark on this one-and-only full bathroom makeover right now, and how we plan to approach it. From a distance, our original bathroom had a certain undeniable charm. The classic black and white tile, the intricate basketweave pattern on the floor, and even its cozy, somewhat cramped quarters, all contributed to a vintage aesthetic that felt perfectly in sync with the character of our 1950s ranch house. It truly held a nostalgic appeal, a remnant of a bygone era, and many visitors complimented its retro vibe.

Indeed, photos often capture the best angles, making everything appear picture-perfect. But the truth, as often happens with older homes, was hidden in the details. Upon closer inspection, this seemingly charming bathroom revealed a myriad of flaws that we simply couldn’t ignore any longer. It was a classic “Monet” – beautiful from afar, but a different story up close. We’re talking about shattered wall tiles, likely a result of the house settling over its many decades, creating unsightly cracks and potential water ingress points that worried us. The flooring, though boasting a beautiful basketweave design, was uneven, stained, and showed significant wear and tear that no amount of scrubbing or re-grouting could erase. The grout itself was crumbling in places, indicating deeper issues with the subfloor. To top it off, the sink had a noticeable chip, a minor detail perhaps, but one that contributed to the overall feeling of dilapidation and made the space feel less than pristine. These weren’t just aesthetic issues; they hinted at deeper, more problematic structural concerns and compromised hygiene that became increasingly difficult to overlook.

The cumulative effect of these imperfections had transformed our appreciation for its vintage charm into a pressing need for renovation. What was once endearing had become functionally deficient and visually disheartening. We realized that simply patching things up was no longer a viable solution; it felt like putting a band-aid on a much larger problem. The bathroom, while serving our family well for decades, was crying out for a comprehensive overhaul to meet modern standards of comfort and durability. This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a safe, functional, and inviting space for everyone in the house, especially with a little one on the way. Our commitment to preserving the character of our home remains, but it must be balanced with practical considerations and a desire for genuine quality, ensuring longevity and ease of maintenance.

Oh well, the original bathroom certainly served our house faithfully for over half a century. And what more could you possibly ask for from a hardworking space, right? We’re typically big proponents of saving what you can, working with what you’ve got, and embracing the character that age brings. In fact, a few years back, we put in a pretty serious cleaning and recaulking effort, which you can read more about here. That undoubtedly bought us some valuable time and extended the bathroom’s lifespan for a while, temporarily alleviating some of the most visible issues. However, despite our best efforts and our general inclination towards preservation, the time has undeniably come to bring this bathroom fully up to speed, to address its fundamental issues, and to ensure it can comfortably serve our family for another fifty years (or more!). We are ready to invest in its future.

Our inspiration and courage to tackle such a significant project also comes from a very personal place. We’ve lived vicariously through my parents’ two fantastic DIY bathroom makeovers (one of which you can admire here), witnessing firsthand the incredible transformations they achieved through dedication and hard work. Their success stories finally empowered Sherry and me to bite the bullet and get this done. And we mean now. We’re not delaying this project any longer, especially with a baby on the way. But fear not, lovers of vintage charm! Our commitment to the integrity of our 50-year-old ranch remains steadfast. We meticulously plan to bring in new classic tiles and materials that will honor the home’s original era, ensuring the refreshed bathroom won’t look too futuristic or out of place. The goal is a timeless design that feels both new and perfectly integrated into the historical context of our home, celebrating its heritage while embracing modern functionality.

Our Approach: A Full DIY Gut Job and a Dash of Resourcefulness
So, what’s our game plan for this ambitious endeavor? Well, the “approach” has already begun! We’ve started the demolition process, tearing things down to the bare studs, revealing the bones of our old bathroom. Our vision is to build it all back up again with our own four hands – truly a labor of love and a testament to our DIY spirit. Of course, this monumental task is made significantly easier and more enjoyable with my dad’s incredibly generous assistance. He’s a seasoned DIY pro, and his expertise, advice, and extra set of skilled hands are invaluable. Sherry, meanwhile, is doing a pretty important job on the side, coordinating materials, managing schedules, and keeping our spirits high with her boundless enthusiasm, making her contribution just as crucial. This collaborative family effort is what makes DIY so rewarding and ultimately successful.
The scope of work is extensive: we’ll be installing new walls, creating a fresh tub/shower surround with modern waterproofing, laying down brand new flooring that will be both durable and aesthetically pleasing, and embarking on an exciting DIY vanity project that promises a custom look. All of this will happen before we officially shift our full attention to designing and decorating the “bean’s room” – the nursery. It’s a busy period, requiring meticulous planning and tireless effort, but we thrive on these challenges and the satisfaction of seeing our home transform. We’re also highly committed to sustainability and giving items a second life. We plan to donate as much of our old bathroom fixtures, such as the vanity, faucet fixtures, and any other salvageable materials, to the Habitat For Humanity ReStore. This not only reduces waste but also supports a wonderful cause, allowing these items to find new homes and help others achieve their own home improvement dreams. If all goes according to our carefully laid plans and the construction gods are on our side, we’re optimistically aiming to have the entire bathroom redo completed and fully functional before Christmas. Keep your fingers crossed for us, as staying on schedule is always the biggest challenge!
Navigating the Renovation: Where Will We Shower?!
And because we anticipate the inevitable question – “Where on earth will you shower?!” (since this is our only full bathroom in the house) – allow us to pre-emptively assure you that we are nothing if not resourceful! This isn’t our first rodeo when it comes to living through renovations, and we’ve devised a strategic, albeit slightly unconventional, showering schedule that capitalizes on our close community ties. I plan to utilize the shower facilities at my gym every single morning on my way to work, turning my daily commute into a two-birds-one-stone efficiency mission. It’s an added incentive to get my workout in, too! Sherry, on the other hand, will swing over to my sister’s house in the evenings. We are incredibly lucky that she lives extra close, practically just around the corner, making this a convenient solution. Her bathroom will become Sherry’s temporary spa, and yes, my sister is a night showerer – a bit quirky, perhaps, but perfectly convenient for our current predicament, ensuring we both stay fresh throughout this dusty remodel. We’re all about making it work!
Design Unveiled: The Mood Board and Material Selections
Speaking of my lovely and wonderfully quirky wife, Sherry will be posting very soon with all the exciting design details for the new bathroom. We know most of you are probably thinking, “Okay, but what will it actually look like?! Give us the visuals!” So, she’ll be sharing a comprehensive working mood board that captures our aesthetic vision and the overall feel we’re aiming for. This board will include everything from tile samples to fixture finishes, giving you a sneak peek into the new space. We understand that you, our amazing readers, appreciate all the pre-planning details – sometimes it’s hard to know where to even begin with a major renovation, and seeing our process can be incredibly helpful for your own projects. Rest assured, we’ll be including a ton of those insights, from budget considerations to material sourcing, so definitely stay tuned for that upcoming post!
We’ve actually already made significant progress on material selections, which is both exciting and a little bit terrifying as the boxes stack up, threatening to take over our entire living space. We’ve chosen the perfect floor tile and wall tile that embody that classic, timeless look we’re striving for, ensuring they will complement the existing character of our ranch house rather than clash with it. We’ve spent countless hours poring over samples to find options that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing. In a creative twist, we’ve even acquired a chunky nightstand that we plan to expertly retrofit with a new sink and faucet to create a unique, custom vanity – a true DIY centerpiece. Beyond the aesthetics, we’ve also borrowed and purchased a substantial collection of tools that we’ll be putting to good use throughout this project, from tile saws to new power drills. All these new additions, from tiles to power tools, are currently occupying our soon-to-be-nursery, which explains why that room currently looks completely unsafe for a newborn. It’s a bit chaotic, and perhaps a fire hazard, but it’s all part of the fun, fun, fun (and hard work!) of bringing our renovation dreams to life, one hammer swing at a time. The vision of the finished bathroom keeps us motivated through the dust and disruption.
