Okay, make that two nightstands. Though technically they started life as living room side tables…
…they were displaced when Karl arrived.
Even though they aren’t original bedroom pieces, we couldn’t part with our Target tables (from the Victoria Hagan collection, bought a few years ago) or those seeded glass lamps (from the now-defunct Nate Berkus line at Linens N’ Things). They’ve found a new home in the master bedroom, at least for now.
Besides helping balance the room visually, they add a lot of practical function. Sherry’s short arms were getting tired of storing her phone and magazines on the floor. Initially we thought the tables might be a bit low, but they’ve been perfect for bedtime reading. The tops sit only about five inches below the mattress, so everything is easy to reach—just roll over and grab.
They’re not necessarily permanent fixtures (Sherry dreams of eggplant-colored lamps someday, and I’d love nightstands with drawers for hidden storage), but they were free and they work wonderfully for now.
An unexpected bonus is how they change the room’s atmosphere at night. Swapping the harsh overhead fan light for the warm glow of the table lamps makes the space feel cozier. The paint reads a bit greener under the soft light, and Ed the Bed casts some dramatic shadows on the ceiling.
It’s also incredibly satisfying to be able to switch off the bedside lamp without getting up to flip the wall switch. No more pretending to be asleep so Sherry has to get out of bed—score.
Next on our bedroom to-do list is replacing that not-so-pretty fan. We’ve spotted something fairly bold that makes us smile, so it’s a strong contender.
