What’s New in Our Renovation Journey: The Tale of a Vintage Pink Stove

Our ongoing journey to transform our beach house is filled with unique finds and unexpected challenges. One such centerpiece is our cherished vintage pink stove, an appliance that perfectly embodies our desire to infuse character and history into our modern coastal retreat. While its retro charm is undeniable, bringing a vintage piece like this back to life is far from a simple task. From the initial excitement of discovering it to the intricate process of restoration, every step has been a learning experience. We often romanticize vintage items, imagining them seamlessly integrating into our homes, but the reality involves meticulous care, unforeseen issues, and a delicate balance between preserving its original allure and ensuring it functions safely and efficiently in a contemporary setting.

The journey with Ol’ Pinkie, as we affectionately call it, began with its discovery and the exciting prospect of having a unique focal point in our kitchen. We even shared the original story of how we found this charming pink stove. However, the path to integration was not without its dramatic moments. Can you spot the persistent little red light that seems to always be on in the photo above? It’s one of those small, curious quirks that comes with owning a piece of history. More significantly, we faced a heart-stopping moment when, right after carefully moving it into our beach house last October, Ol’ Pinkie decided to “pop” on us the moment we plugged it in. Imagine the surge of panic and disappointment! A vintage appliance, even one in seemingly good condition, can hide electrical idiosyncrasies that demand professional attention. The relief was immense when we managed to get it (mostly) better. This incident underscored the crucial importance of having vintage appliances thoroughly inspected and serviced by specialists who understand their unique electrical requirements, a lesson invaluable for any homeowner considering similar antique treasures. It’s a constant reminder that with vintage charm often comes the need for diligent maintenance and a bit of patience.

Ultimately, despite the initial scare and the ongoing adventures of vintage appliance ownership, Ol’ Pinkie has settled into its role, offering both unparalleled style and functionality to our kitchen. We learned that the secret to successfully integrating vintage pieces lies in embracing their unique character, understanding their limitations, and being prepared for the occasional unexpected repair. It’s a testament to the fact that not everything in renovation is a smooth sail, but the rewards of preserving and enjoying a piece of history are truly priceless. This experience also highlighted our appreciation for reliable, modern solutions where appropriate, and finding the right balance between old-world charm and contemporary convenience.

Beach House Renovation Regrets: Learning from Our Design & Functionality Missteps

Every renovation project, no matter how carefully planned, presents its share of “if only we had…” moments. Our beach house transformation was no exception. While we absolutely adore the final outcome of many spaces, we’re candidly sharing some of the design decisions and logistical oversights that, in hindsight, we wish we could rewind and redo. I’ll do my best here to represent the mistakes that we discussed in depth in the podcast episode, but for a much more clarified and detailed rundown, including our real-time reactions and deeper explanations, the episode is definitely worth a listen. Investing just 15 minutes of your time could save you from making similar mistakes in your own home improvement projects.

The Case of the Hidden Hall Bathroom Accent Tile

One of our primary regrets revolves around the placement of a beautiful blue accent tile in our hall bathroom. We envisioned this vibrant tile making a striking statement, but unforeseen architectural and regulatory constraints led to its less-than-ideal placement. Building codes required us to position the light switches on the left-hand wall, which, in turn, dictated the door swing. This meant our gorgeous accent tile in the shower is now primarily hidden behind the open door, only visible from a very specific angle. While the view that *is* visible is still undeniably pretty and we wouldn’t want the door to swing into the vanity, the initial impact we hoped for was significantly diminished. This experience really underscored the need to meticulously plan every detail, from switch placement to door swings, and how these seemingly minor elements can dramatically impact the visual flow and appreciation of key design features. It was a classic example of functionality and code dictating aesthetics.

Our regret deepened when we considered the downstairs bathroom, which is conveniently attached to the mudroom/laundry room. This space features a more open layout where the shower tile would have been immediately visible to anyone entering the room. Imagine that striking blue accent tile proudly displayed, appreciated by everyone walking by! This contrast made us realize our missed opportunity to truly highlight the tile’s beauty in a high-traffic area. The lesson learned here is profound: when selecting a special design element like an accent tile, it’s crucial to think beyond its aesthetic appeal in isolation and consider how the overall room layout, traffic patterns, and even mundane necessities like light switch placement will affect its visibility and impact. We now understand the importance of mapping out every functional detail *before* committing to a decorative placement, ensuring that our cherished design choices get the spotlight they deserve.

The Evolution of a Breakfast Nook into a Pantry: Functionality Over Fluff

Another significant design pivot in our beach house was the transformation of what was initially conceived as a charming breakfast nook into a highly functional pantry. We’ve discussed this evolution several times, including in Episode #74: The Big Fight We Had Over A Fridge and Episode #85: What We Got Wrong In Our Beach House Kitchen. Initially, we were captivated by the *idea* of how quaint and inviting a breakfast nook would *look* in that corner of the kitchen. The romantic notion of cozy morning meals swayed our initial plans, prioritizing aesthetics over practical, everyday needs.

Space originally intended for a breakfast nook

However, as we moved further into the renovation and truly considered how the space would *actually function* on a daily basis, a crucial reality check occurred. The charming breakfast nook, while visually appealing, would have offered limited utility in a house that frequently hosts guests and requires ample storage. This introspection led to a pivotal decision: converting the space into a much-needed walk-in pantry. Thankfully, this pragmatic shift resulted in a pantry that we absolutely love and find incredibly indispensable for organizing our kitchen essentials. This transformation stands as a powerful testament to prioritizing functionality in kitchen design, reminding us that sometimes the most beautiful spaces are those that serve our practical needs best. We even documented how we built the walk-in pantry shelves here, showcasing how a functional regret can be turned into a beloved feature.

The En-Suite Bathroom’s “Stupid Small” Sink Dilemma

Our en-suite bathroom holds a special place in our hearts thanks to its luxurious shower and tub, but one element continues to niggle at us: the sink. In one of the few shots we have of this little en-suite bathroom sink, you can see its compact size. While one of Sherry’s interior designer friends actually exclaimed, “I LOVE THAT LITTLE SINK!”—a wonderfully validating comment after we’d secretly been convinced it was “stupid small”—it remains an item on our eventual fix-it list. This anecdote highlights how subjective design can be, and how even with professional approval, personal preferences can linger as minor regrets. Despite its diminutive stature, the overall charm and functionality of the shower and tub thankfully still make this room one of our favorites. It’s a gentle reminder that not every single element has to be perfect for a space to be cherished; sometimes, the sum of its parts still creates a beloved sanctuary.

Small en-suite bathroom sink

To put our “small sink” sentiment into perspective, consider the sink in our previous home’s guest bathroom, which, to this day, still utterly charms us. This particular sink, while also compact, felt perfectly suited to its tiny, vintage-tiled surroundings. It offered a sense of cohesion and proportion that, for us, somehow eludes the slightly bigger and more open aesthetic of our beach house bathroom. This comparison isn’t to say one sink is objectively better than the other, but rather to illustrate how crucial context and overall design harmony are in creating a truly satisfying space. We’ve learned that sometimes a design element that works beautifully in one environment might feel slightly off in another, even if individually appealing. The goal is always to create a cohesive and comfortable experience.

Exterior Oversights: The Untouched Porch and Front Door

While much of our interior has seen a significant glow-up, the exterior of our pink beach house, particularly the porch, still tells a story of unfinished business. The photo below clearly illustrates the rough state of the porch, making it easy to understand why we regret not prioritizing its restoration sooner. Curb appeal is incredibly important, not just for aesthetics but also for the overall welcome and impression a home gives. An unkempt porch can detract significantly from an otherwise beautifully renovated interior. It’s a prime example of how even with the best intentions, some tasks inevitably get pushed down the list during a large-scale renovation. While the to-do list seems endless, staining that front door and revitalizing the porch are high on our agenda to complete soon, promising a much-deserved refresh to our home’s exterior.

Rough-looking porch and front door of the pink house

Our exterior renovation regrets aren’t limited to the front porch. We’ve also discussed the wooden steps on the side and back of the house, which require similar attention and are detailed further in Episode #99. These elements, though functional, haven’t yet received the aesthetic upgrade they deserve, creating a slight imbalance between the refreshed interior and the still-rustic exterior. This ongoing challenge highlights the multi-faceted nature of home renovation and the constant prioritization of tasks. We’re committed to tackling these exterior projects to ensure the entire property reflects the care and vision we’ve poured into the interior.

The Low-Down on Laundry Room Plugs: A High-Placement Headache

One of those small but irritating renovation snags often occurs with utility placements. The photo below, taken long before our laundry room was fully completed, offers the best perspective on how high the plugs for the washer and dryer were originally installed. It’s one of those details you don’t fully appreciate until the appliances arrive. We didn’t really notice this oversight until the actual washer and dryer were delivered and installed, revealing that the plugs would stick up well above the appliances. This high placement was problematic because it directly interrupted the valuable wall space where we intended to add a practical shelf for laundry essentials. This small detail, if left unaddressed, would have been a constant source of frustration and compromised our storage plans.

Original high placement of washer and dryer plugs

Thankfully, we were able to rectify this issue by having our electrician drop the dryer plug about six inches. This adjustment allowed it to sit perfectly just under the back lip of the dryer, discreetly out of sight and no longer impeding our shelving plans. The other plug was cleverly covered by the storage cabinet, effectively resolving both visual and functional concerns. Crucially, even with these adjustments, the plugs remain incredibly easy to access without needing to move the heavy washer and dryer. Our shelves aren’t permanently screwed in; they simply rest in brackets, allowing them to be popped off easily. This design enables quick and convenient access to all the hookups right behind the top of the washer and dryer, ensuring maintenance and connections are hassle-free. This small but significant fix made a world of difference in the functionality and aesthetic appeal of our laundry room. You can read more about this successful laundry room makeover here, including all the smart design choices that contributed to its efficiency and style.

Strategic Thermostat Placement: Blending Function with Art

While I don’t have any truly current, pristine shots of our thermostat placements, some of these older pictures from before we fully moved in offer a glimpse into one of our savvier renovation decisions. We deliberately had our thermostats installed near corners of walls, a strategic move to prevent them from becoming visual obstructions in the middle of a wall. We knew from experience that a centrally placed thermostat would inevitably interfere with our future plans for hanging art and would forever be a minor aesthetic annoyance. Upstairs, we strategically positioned it right outside the entrance to the main bedroom, ensuring ample, uninterrupted wall space within the room for decorative pieces. This foresight allowed us to maintain the clean lines and artistic potential of our walls. Note: these specific pictures are from before we swapped the stock thermostats out for our beloved Nest E Thermostats, which further enhance both the aesthetics and smart home functionality of our system.

Similarly, downstairs, the thermostat is discreetly located near the light switch in the dining room, visible as the item covered in blue tape in the photo below. This careful placement again preserved vast stretches of uninterrupted wall space, perfect for showcasing artwork or creating elegant design vignettes without any functional hardware breaking the visual flow. This conscious decision during the planning phase of our renovation demonstrates how anticipating future aesthetic needs can lead to a more harmonious and satisfying interior design. It’s a small detail, but one that significantly contributes to the overall “feel” of a space, allowing art to be the star rather than a thermostat.

The Subtle Annoyance of an Uneven Floor Transition

In the dining room photo above, another subtle design imperfection becomes apparent: the transition between the living room and dining room is slightly higher than we would prefer. While it’s not a major hazard—no one has tripped on it, thankfully—it’s one of those minor details that, once noticed, can be a continuous, albeit small, source of annoyance. We had aimed for a perfectly seamless transition, much like the one in the other doorway in the house, where the threshold is neatly sunk into the floor and completely flush. This comparison highlights how a truly smooth floor transition contributes significantly to the perceived quality and finish of a space. It serves as a reminder that in home renovation, even the smallest discrepancies in execution can prevent a space from achieving that ultimate level of refined perfection. It’s a lesson in meticulous attention to detail, especially when dealing with various flooring types or age discrepancies.

Ending on a High Note: The Success of Our Back Bedroom with Pocket Doors

To conclude our tour of renovation insights, let’s end on a truly high note with one of our most successful design choices: the back bedroom. We initially harbored some worries about adding a new wall and incorporating pocket doors, fearing it might compromise the openness or light of the space. However, this strategic decision proved to be an absolutely perfect solution. The addition of the wall with pocket doors provides essential bedroom privacy at night without sacrificing the incredible amount of natural light that streams in from that large window during the daytime. The beauty of pocket doors lies in their ability to disappear seamlessly into the wall, offering flexibility that traditional hinged doors simply cannot. Furthermore, this clever layout still grants us convenient access to our own “private” staircase at the back of the house, enhancing both the functionality and unique charm of the space. This room stands as a testament to thoughtful design and how innovative solutions can elegantly solve complex functional and aesthetic needs, creating a space that is both private and wonderfully bright.
