Revolutionizing Our Closet: The IKEA Pax Wardrobe Transformation
One of the most exciting, yet previously understated, aspects of our current renovation project is the complete overhaul of our primary closet space. A well-organized and highly functional closet can dramatically improve daily routines and enhance overall home efficiency. We’re finally ready to share the details of our new organizational strategy, featuring a system that has consistently proven its worth in past projects: the IKEA Pax Wardrobe system.

- You might recall the previous state of our closet from a post last year detailing Sherry’s journey towards a minimal wardrobe. The image above showcases Sherry’s side of the room, prior to any demolition, offering a glimpse into its former layout and organization. My side, though not pictured here, mirrored a similar structure. It’s hard to believe how much has changed since then. Oh, and hello there, Burger!
- Currently, this space is a blank canvas – an empty room stripped down to its bare bones, awaiting its new floor and, eventually, its state-of-the-art storage system.

The decision to utilize the IKEA Pax system was an easy one, given its incredible versatility and customization options. For anyone considering a closet renovation, the Pax system offers an unparalleled ability to tailor storage solutions to specific needs, ensuring every inch of space is maximized for efficiency and aesthetics. It truly allows for a personalized wardrobe experience, moving beyond generic shelving to a system that adapts to your unique clothing collection and lifestyle.
- Below, you’ll find a rendering created using IKEA’s innovative Pax Wardrobe planner. This visualization provides a solid representation of how our new custom wardrobe system will approximately look once installed. While we meticulously designed this layout at home, we did make a few crucial fine-tuning adjustments during our in-store visit before placing the final order. So, while this rendering is close, the exact final configuration might have minor tweaks. We are incredibly excited to share a plethora of photos and a detailed breakdown of the finished product once installation is complete.

- Our specific design incorporates one 29-inch wide wardrobe unit positioned centrally, flanked on each side by two 19-inch wardrobes that will feature doors. This thoughtful configuration addresses both practical accessibility and aesthetic preferences. IKEA currently doesn’t offer doors for the 29-inch wide Pax units, which perfectly aligns with our vision for the central area. We believe this open section will be far more convenient without doors, particularly since a significant portion of it will house drawers. Having drawers concealed behind doors often means double the effort to access items, a hindrance we aimed to avoid.
- While the exposed, central portions of both our wardrobe sides are designed to be identical, maintaining visual symmetry, the interiors of the doored 19-inch wardrobes have been highly customized to cater to each of our individual storage requirements. We’re eager to reveal the intricate details of their internal organization once these units are fully installed and operational.
- Our positive experiences with IKEA Pax wardrobes extend back to our first home. In the main bedroom, we successfully expanded our clothing storage significantly by integrating two Pax units on either side of our bed. We thoroughly documented the organization process in a dedicated post. It’s truly astonishing to think that this project was completed almost 11 years ago, showcasing the enduring appeal and functionality of the Pax system!

- To provide a complete historical perspective on our closet journey, here’s a link to the closet in our second home. Interestingly, its layout and design bear an uncanny resemblance to what our current closet looked like before the demolition phase began, highlighting a recurring need for efficient storage solutions in our homes.
Holiday Preparedness: Creative Gift-Giving & Listener-Approved Life Hacks
The holiday season, while joyful, can often bring its own unique set of stresses, particularly around gift-giving. To alleviate some of that pressure and inject more fun into the process, we’ve experimented with various themed gift exchanges with our extended family over the years. This approach not only simplifies the selection process but also fosters creativity and often leads to more thoughtful, memorable gifts. We’ve found these themes encourage everyone to think outside the box and focus on connection rather than just consumption.

- As promised, here’s a curated list of some of our most successful and beloved holiday gift-giving themes that have brought joy and eased the stress of selection in the past. Each theme offers a unique direction, inspiring thoughtful and often humorous gift ideas:
- Hey Hot Stuff! This theme encourages gifts related to anything “hot” – think spicy culinary delights, items designed to keep you warm and cozy, or even souvenirs and experiences tied to warm, exotic destinations.
- Book It: A versatile theme that goes beyond just books. While literary gifts are perfect, it also encompasses items related to planning a trip, running, or any form of organized activity.
- Travel Junk: Perfect for those who love to explore! This theme focuses on gifts collected during trips or vacations, often carrying sentimental value and a story.
- Say Cheese: A delightful theme that covers both photography-related gifts and, quite literally, cheese-themed items. For instance, we once found a fantastic Wisconsin-shaped cutting board for our cousins residing in Madison.
- The Good Ol’ Days: Embrace nostalgia with vintage or retro-inspired gifts. Classic board games, for example, like these retro-style Scrabble and Sorry sets, are always a hit.
- On The Road: This theme centers around gifts ideal for road trips or general travel. We particularly appreciated a thoughtful travel art kit we once received under this theme.
- The Year of Granny: A wonderful way to honor a special milestone! For my grandma’s 90th birthday, we selected gifts that lovingly reminded us of her, such as an automatic card shuffler.
- Be A Good Sport: Gifts that celebrate athleticism and team spirit. This could include memorabilia for a favorite sports team or actual games and equipment to enjoy together.
- Feeling Green: This theme promotes eco-conscious gifts or items that are, quite literally, green in color, encouraging sustainability or simply a splash of vibrant nature.
- Across State Lines: A fun way to share local culture, this theme suggests gifting local products or specialties from the gifter’s hometown or state.
- Beyond holiday specific tips, we’ve also gathered a wealth of non-holiday “life hacks” from our engaged listeners. You can delve into more of these clever ideas and practical solutions in Episode #153 of our podcast, offering everyday wisdom to simplify various aspects of life.
Navigating the Home Renovation Journey: Strategies for Stress Management
The reality of a home renovation often involves a complex dance between excitement and anxiety. Managing the inherent stress is crucial for a positive experience and a successful outcome. We’ve learned that proactive strategies for tackling common stressors like budget overruns, timeline creep, and decision fatigue are indispensable. This week, we’re sharing insights into how we’re approaching our bathroom renovation with these principles in mind, aiming to enjoy the process as much as the beautiful end result.

- For those who wish to follow our bathroom renovation journey from the beginning, click this link. It will take you to a comprehensive post featuring initial “before” photos, detailed floor plans, and direct links to all of our carefully selected tile and fixture choices, including Sherry’s much-adored freestanding tub.
- The photograph above was captured just last week, showcasing our intensive efforts in completing all necessary tile preparation. We are nearly finished with this critical phase, which means we are hopefully on track to commence tiling the shower floor, shower walls, and the entire bathroom and closet floor shortly after Thanksgiving. This marks a significant milestone in our project. For a striking comparison, observe the “before” shot below, taken from a similar vantage point. It clearly illustrates the considerable progress we’ve already achieved.

- A core philosophy guiding our renovation approach, and indeed a key to managing stress, is the idea of “enjoying the process, not just the outcome.” We recently drew inspiration from our conversation with Miranda Anderson, which you can listen to in its entirety in Episode #152. Furthermore, Miranda delves into her own insightful discussion on embracing the renovation journey in episode #36 of her podcast, Live Free Creative. Her perspective offers invaluable guidance for anyone undertaking a large-scale home project.
- One area where we’ve learned a significant lesson about finishes and maintenance relates to our kitchen counters. The quartz counters in our kitchen, which we discussed in the podcast episode, are depicted below. While we initially loved the matte finish for its modern aesthetic, we quickly discovered a notable issue: the matte surface prominently displays “ghosted” outlines of every single water spot or splash. While these marks can be removed through buffing, it would require constant, diligent effort to keep them at bay, proving to be quite high-maintenance. In stark contrast, the polished quartz counter on our kitchen island exhibits none of these issues; it remains wonderfully low-maintenance and pristine.

- Despite this observation, we still appreciate the overall aesthetic and impressive durability of these counters. However, in hindsight, had we been aware of the susceptibility to ghosted water spots on the matte finish, we unequivocally would have opted for a polished finish instead. This experience serves as a valuable reminder that finish choices can dramatically impact the daily maintenance and long-term satisfaction of a material. You can explore more pictures of our bright white kitchen here to see the full transformation.
What We’re Loving: Nostalgic Toys, Everyday Essentials & More
In our “We’re Digging” segment, we share some of the delightful discoveries and beloved items that have recently captured our attention and added a little joy to our lives. This week, it’s a mix of charming throwbacks, practical essentials, and thoughtful tools for family life.

- These wonderfully vintage troll dolls pictured above were a sweet gift our daughter received from a friend, instantly bringing a wave of nostalgia. There’s something truly special about introducing your children to toys from your own childhood, creating a unique connection across generations. If you’re inspired to revisit your own youth and share that magic, you can often find similar lots for sale on eBay. Just a friendly warning: some of these retro toys can be a bit… quirky. For instance, the one at the top with the birthday hat has certainly inspired a few comedic “nightmare” comments!
- Beyond troll dolls, the world of throwback toys offers a treasure trove of simple, engaging fun that often stands the test of time, proving that imagination doesn’t need batteries. Here are some other classic toy ideas that have resonated with our family and countless others:
- Vintage Beanie Babies: Our kids have inherited some of my little sister’s old collection, and these cuddly creatures have quickly become some of their most cherished stuffed animals, proving their timeless appeal.
- Classic Legos: We’re talking about the original, colorful bricks – not necessarily branded sets tied to movies or specific themes. These timeless building blocks foster pure creativity and problem-solving, allowing kids to build anything their imagination can conjure.
- Old action figures: Revisit the heroes of yesteryear with figures like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or the mighty He-Man. These figures often spark imaginative play and storytelling that modern toys sometimes miss.
- Retro versions of classic board games: Gather the family for a round of Clue, challenge your memory with Guess Who?, or engage in strategic naval combat with Battleship. These games offer enduring entertainment and quality family time.
- Old collections: For those who remember the thrill of collecting, items like Garbage Pail Kids cards or Pogs (oh, the extensive Pogs collection I once meticulously maintained!) can bring back powerful memories and even spark new interest.
- Sherry frequently receives questions about the “Save – Spend – Share” piggy banks we’ve previously mentioned. We believe these are fantastic tools for teaching children fundamental financial literacy from an early age. To make it easier for those interested, here’s a direct link to those again.

- And finally, I can’t stop raving about these incredibly comfortable “stretchy” jeans that have become a staple in my everyday wardrobe. Comfort is paramount, especially when navigating home projects or daily life, and these jeans deliver. Currently, they are an absolute steal, priced at just $20! This incredible value prompted me to immediately purchase another pair as a backup. While various fits are available, the Athletic Fit is my personal favorite, providing ample room without being overly loose. For my preference, the “Slim Fit” tends to be a bit too constricting.
