Welcome back to our journey of transforming our sunroom into a vibrant, functional, and deeply inviting sanctuary! We’re thrilled to pull back the curtain on phase two of our extensive sunroom makeover. If you recall from the initial phase – what we affectionately termed our ‘work-with-what-you-have’ stage – we tackled some foundational updates. That involved refreshing our dark daybed with a crisp coat of white paint and ingeniously repurposing our old guest room dresser and mirror to add both style and storage. With those essential elements in place, it was time to introduce two pivotal changes that would truly elevate the room’s aesthetic and functionality: a fresh coat of paint for the ceiling and streamlined curtain rods. Get ready to witness how these relatively simple additions made an extraordinary impact, injecting personality and polish into our beloved sunroom space.
Transforming Our Sunroom: Phase Two Unveiled for a Brighter, More Functional Space
A Splash of Serenity: Painting the Sunroom Ceiling Aqua
Our sunroom, often considered an extension of our outdoor living space, presented a unique opportunity for a bold and refreshing design choice. From the moment we moved in, the ceiling had mirrored the same rather nondescript tan tone as the walls, creating a somewhat enclosed and uninspired atmosphere. For quite some time, we’d harbored a desire to paint the sunroom ceiling an inviting aqua hue. This wasn’t just a random whim; it was inspired by a charming Southern tradition of painting porch ceilings a light blue. We reasoned that if this color brought joy and a sense of openness to outdoor porches, it would certainly enhance the sunroom’s ambiance, making it feel even more like a tranquil escape. This decision promised to inject a significant dose of character and perceived spaciousness into the room.

Embracing the Tradition of Blue Ceilings
The tradition of painting porch ceilings blue, often referred to as “haint blue,” is deeply rooted in Southern culture, dating back centuries. Folklore suggests that this specific shade of blue deters insects, as it mimics the sky and confuses wasps and other pests. Beyond its practical benefits, “haint blue” is also believed to ward off evil spirits, or “haints,” bringing peace and protection to the home. For us, embracing this tradition in our sunroom felt incredibly fitting. Our sunroom bridges the gap between indoor comfort and outdoor charm, making it the perfect canvas for a sky-inspired ceiling. We anticipated that a light blue ceiling would not only add a touch of historical charm but also create an illusion of boundless space, making the room feel perpetually open to the vast, calming sky above.
Choosing the Perfect Hue for Our Sunroom Makeover
Selecting the perfect paint color is a crucial step in any home improvement project, and our sunroom was no exception. Our first and most vital step was to tape several paint swatches directly onto the ceiling. This allows us to observe how different shades react to the varying natural light throughout the day – from the soft glow of morning, through the bright midday sun, to the fading light of evening. After a diligent process of observation over several days and nights, one color clearly emerged as the frontrunner: “Tide Pools” by Behr. We found it struck the ideal balance – it was semi-bright enough to be noticeable and invigorating, yet not so heavy or dark that it would weigh down the room. Crucially, its distinct aqua tone ensured there was no possibility of it being mistaken for white, regardless of how much sunlight streamed into the room. This specific shade offered the perfect blend of vibrancy and serenity we were seeking.

Preparation and Application: A Dedicated Solo Project
With “Tide Pools” selected, it was time to transform our vision into reality. This particular project fell to John, as I was on baby duty. He tackled the entire ceiling solo, demonstrating impressive dedication and skill. The preparation involved meticulously applying Frog Tape around the perimeter of the room, ensuring a clean, crisp line where the new aqua ceiling would meet the existing wall color and molding. This crucial step prevents any paint bleeding and guarantees a professional finish. For the application, John utilized a small stepstool, a precise paintbrush for cutting in along the edges, and a roller for the broader surfaces. While a rod extender can significantly ease the strain on one’s back during ceiling painting, John, perhaps feeling particularly energetic and confident in his reach, opted to rely on his long limbs instead. We chose an exterior satin semi-gloss paint for several reasons. Given the sunroom’s unique nature as an indoor/outdoor space that isn’t consistently heated or cooled, an exterior-grade paint offers enhanced durability and resistance to temperature fluctuations. The semi-gloss finish was specifically chosen to achieve that coveted “glossy, pool-like effect,” adding an extra layer of visual interest and light reflection to the new blue ceiling.

The Stunning Aftermath: Bigger, Brighter, Bolder
The transformation was immediate and breathtaking after two coats of the luscious semi-gloss “Tide Pools” paint from Behr. We were absolutely delighted with the results. The chosen paint imparted a beautiful sheen, adding a subtle reflective quality that made the ceiling feel almost liquid. But more importantly, the pop of aqua color dramatically altered the entire perception of the room. It now looks immeasurably bigger and undeniably airier. The effect is so profound that it literally feels as though we’ve removed the ceiling entirely, and are now gazing directly up at a vast, bright blue sky. This psychological impact is precisely what we had hoped for, creating an expansive and uplifting atmosphere that truly enhances the sunroom experience. The previous tan ceiling had inadvertently created a visual barrier, making the room feel smaller, whereas the new aqua ceiling creates a sense of boundless space and tranquility, perfectly aligning with the sunroom’s purpose as a connection to the outdoors. It’s truly astonishing how a single color choice can so completely redefine a space, bringing in an element of nature and openness that was previously missing.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Paint Finish
Achieving a nice, crisp perimeter when painting is key to a professional-looking finish. Our top tip for this is to remove your painter’s tape as soon as you finish applying your last coat of paint. If you allow the paint to fully dry before removing the tape, there’s a higher risk of the paint drying and pulling away with the tape, resulting in jagged or less-than-perfect edges. Removing it while the paint is still slightly wet ensures a clean, sharp line. (John chose to tape things off for extra precision since he was working alone, though I often prefer to edge with a brush for intricate areas.) Furthermore, it’s imperative to firmly press down your painter’s tape as you apply it. Any gaps or loose sections will allow paint to easily bleed and seep underneath, compromising your crisp edge. A nice, tight seal is non-negotiable for a flawless result. Taking these small but crucial steps can make a huge difference in the overall quality and aesthetic appeal of your painting project.
Elevating Style and Function: The Sunroom Curtain Rod Upgrade
With the stunning aqua ceiling complete, our attention shifted to the next crucial element: the curtains. This was one of those projects where, upon completion, we found ourselves wondering, “Why on earth did we wait so long?” The introduction of proper curtain rods, paired with our existing IKEA Vivan curtains, brought an immediate and dramatic improvement. The room instantly felt more refined, organized, and complete. The difference was not just aesthetic; it was also profoundly functional. Observe how crisp and polished they look, seamlessly integrating into the room’s evolving design and enhancing its overall appeal. This simple upgrade transformed the curtains from a makeshift solution into a sophisticated design feature, underscoring the power of thoughtful hardware in interior design.

From Makeshift to Masterpiece: Ditching the Twine
A while back – quite a long while, in fact – we had employed a rather “McGuyvered” solution for our IKEA Vivan curtains. John had ingeniously, albeit temporarily, rigged them into each corner of the sunroom using simple twine and a few nails. While this provided a functional solution at the time, allowing the curtains to appear as if they were floating in place (as you can see if you scroll back up to the first picture in this post), it lacked both the polished aesthetic and the full functionality we desired. We recognized that installing dark, streamlined curtain rods around the entire perimeter of the room would not only introduce handsome hardware that perfectly tied into the deep color of our door frames but would also bring a significant boost in practicality. For instance, we can now effortlessly pull the curtains along the rods, which is incredibly useful for diffusing harsh sunlight when we’re engaged in activities like shooting Clara’s weekly photos, or simply when we desire more privacy or a softer ambiance.
Smart Solutions for Long Spaces and Tricky Corners
Our quest for the perfect curtain rods led us to IKEA, where we found simple, effective solutions. We opted for their streamlined rods, choosing to omit the finials to achieve a much cleaner, more modern look that blended seamlessly with our aesthetic. The challenge, however, was the considerable 20-foot length of the sunroom, which far exceeded the length of any single standard rod. Our ingenious solution was to simply mount two rods right next to each other. By positioning them carefully so they met precisely in the middle of the wall, we successfully created the illusion of one continuous, unbroken rod stretching across the entire expanse. This clever trick allowed us to cover the full length without custom-made, expensive options, proving that smart design often comes from simple, creative thinking.

Achieving Seamless Corner Design
Tackling the corners was another design puzzle we needed to solve to ensure an uninterrupted flow of curtains around the room. Our solution was both simple and effective: we mounted two rods so that each could be extended slightly past its bracket. This allowed the ends of the rods to meet and touch precisely at the corner, creating a fluid, continuous line that gracefully mimicked the room’s architecture. This method ensured that there were no awkward gaps or breaks in the curtain line, maintaining the sleek and polished aesthetic we were striving for. The careful alignment of the rods meant that the visual journey around the sunroom was smooth and harmonious, a testament to the power of meticulous planning in DIY projects.

The Integrated Look: Functionality Meets Style
Once we extended the rods so they met seamlessly at the corners and threaded the curtain panels along them, the effect was truly transformative. This clever installation created a completely seamless corner curtain panel, allowing the curtains to glide smoothly and appear as one continuous drapery around the entire room. In the accompanying image, you can observe two distinct curtain panels gracefully hanging, one on each rod, yet their union at the corner is virtually undetectable. This integrated look not only vastly improved the room’s aesthetic appeal, making it feel more tailored and luxurious, but also significantly enhanced functionality. Now, the curtains can be easily opened and closed across the entire length and around corners, offering unparalleled flexibility for light control, privacy, and creating different moods within the sunroom. This thoughtful design ensures that beauty and practicality coexist harmoniously, elevating the entire space.

The Tailored Touch: Hemming IKEA Curtains for Perfection
Our final task on the agenda for phase two was a detail that makes a world of difference: hemming those IKEA Vivan curtain panels. While we loved the affordability and simple elegance of the Vivan curtains, they are notoriously long, leaving a rather sloppy, pooling look on the floor. This unhemmed appearance detracted from the otherwise polished updates we were making to the sunroom. As you can see in the picture, the excess fabric created a messy and untidy impression, undermining the clean, streamlined aesthetic we were working so hard to achieve. Proper hemming would transform these budget-friendly curtains into custom-looking draperies, providing the perfect finishing touch to our sunroom makeover.

Why Our Preferred Hemming Method Matters
While IKEA curtains often come with a webbed hem tape, we prefer not to use it for our projects. Instead, we invest a few dollars at Michael’s for an iron-on hem tape that we’ve come to love and trust: “Heavy Duty Heat N’ Bond.” Our preference stems from its superior adhesion and durability, which ensures a long-lasting and crisp hem. This product creates a strong bond that withstands regular washing and wear much better than the standard IKEA offering. The quality of your hem tape significantly impacts the final look and longevity of your curtains, making this a small but worthwhile upgrade for a truly professional and tailored finish. It’s about ensuring that the effort put into hemming results in a lasting, beautiful outcome.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect Curtain Hems
Achieving perfectly hemmed curtains requires a few crucial steps to ensure accuracy and a professional finish. First, it’s absolutely essential to wash and thoroughly dry all your curtains according to their care instructions before you begin. Curtains, especially new ones, can shrink quite a bit in the first wash, and you need to account for this shrinkage to determine the final, accurate length. After washing and drying, hang them on the rods where they will permanently reside. This allows the fabric to relax and settle into its natural drape. Once hung, you can accurately note the desired length for hemming. We personally prefer a look where the curtains gently graze the floor, rather than pooling excessively or floating too high above it. This “grazing” effect creates a lovely breezy and casual yet still tailored aesthetic that complements our sunroom’s relaxed vibe. Using the Heavy Duty Heat N’ Bond, carefully measure and fold the hem, pressing it firmly with an iron to secure the bond. This method ensures a neat, durable, and polished hem without the need for sewing, making it a fantastic DIY solution for achieving a custom look.

Phase Two Complete: Budget-Friendly Beauty Achieved in Our Sunroom
And there you have it – the successful completion of phase two of our exciting three-phase sunroom mini-makeover! What makes this transformation truly remarkable, and incredibly satisfying, is the minimal financial investment required for such a significant impact. So far, we’ve only spent approximately $20 on the serene aqua ceiling paint and another $40 on the four extra-long curtain rods from IKEA. Every other element, from the daybed and dresser to the curtains themselves, was thoughtfully repurposed from items we already owned or had lying around. This project stands as a testament to the power of strategic DIY and the incredible results that can be achieved through thoughtful planning and creativity, even on a modest budget. The sunroom now feels like a completely different space – brighter, more functional, and bursting with personality, all thanks to these strategic updates.
