As perennial optimists when it comes to home transformation, we embrace the journey of our beach house renovation with unwavering enthusiasm. Despite its current state of disarray – battling mold, termite damage, faulty wiring, no HVAC, and a failing foundation – we’ve learned that focusing on the enjoyable aspects of home design is key to navigating the less glamorous, often grimace-inducing challenges. While progress on the structural rebuilding is slow, today we’re excited to open up our minds and share the vibrant beach house style ideas that are currently sparking our creativity. Thinking about the decorating phase, even with a million steps between now and then, is truly keeping our renovation spirits high. So, without further delay, welcome to the imaginative world of our future beach house.
Before we delve into the visual inspirations, it might be helpful to revisit our initial floorplan and preliminary renovation plans, which were detailed in this earlier post. That article also features a comprehensive house tour video. For your convenience, we’ve included the floor plan below for quick reference as you explore our design concepts. A crucial update since our initial planning: we’ve decided to relocate the downstairs bathroom door to open into the mudroom, moving its access away from the dining area for improved functionality and flow.

Our overarching vision for the interior of this coastal retreat can be encapsulated by four key principles: a space that is relaxed, uncomplicated, comfortable, and a harmonious blend of old and new. We are consciously resisting the impulse to overfill or overdecorate the house. The goal is to cultivate an atmosphere that feels effortlessly light and easy, rather than meticulously organized or overly styled. Moreover, the house’s inherent age is one of its most cherished qualities, and we are committed to honoring its history. This means preserving the original doors and their hardware, meticulously refinishing the existing heart pine floors, and celebrating unique architectural features like our beloved curved wall and the charming back staircase. We even uncovered an old brick chimney, which we plan to carefully expose, adding another layer of rustic character.
Naturally, while embracing the old, we will also integrate contemporary touches to ensure optimal guest comfort and modern functionality. This largely translates to new, essential items such as plush mattresses, crisp bedding, and stylish curtains, rather than furnishing the entire space with antiques that might evoke a period film set. An interesting observation after compiling all our inspiration images is their predominant white aesthetic. While we are undeniably drawn to a light and airy ambiance, my intuition suggests that the final execution will feature a richer palette, bringing more color and vibrancy into the space than some of these initial monochromatic images might imply. We envision a subtle infusion of coastal hues and natural textures to create a truly inviting and dynamic environment.
Let’s begin our deep dive into the specific design inspirations, starting with the bedrooms, as they perfectly embody our core objective of creating relaxed and uncomplicated sanctuaries.
Bedroom Style Inspiration: Crafting Serene Sanctuaries
A bedroom, particularly one designed for guests or renters in a beach house setting, thrives on simplicity and comfort. Given that the bedrooms in this charming old home are not expansive, our primary aim is to craft beds that exude irresistible comfort without feeling overly fussy or ornate. We envision a minimalist approach: perhaps a sleek, simple nightstand, complemented by a piece of captivating artwork above it, and one or two thoughtfully chosen light fixtures. Could our popular $90 sconces find a home in one of these rooms? What these inspirational images consistently demonstrate is the power of simple, uncluttered design to create a welcoming and calming retreat, effectively avoiding any sense of starkness or barrenness. The key lies in strategic selections that prioritize both aesthetics and the feeling of warmth.
Bunk Room Design Ideas: Maximizing Small Spaces with Style
Beyond the three primary bedrooms, we are excited to carve out a dedicated bonus sleeping zone specifically designed for children. This space will undoubtedly be compact, with beds likely spanning wall-to-wall and featuring a ladder for access. To enhance the perception of space and maintain an airy feel within this snug area, we will probably opt for white finishes on the bunk beds. The clever wooden bunk shown in one of our inspirations is actually an ingenious IKEA hack, showcasing how smart design can transform affordable pieces. Our ambition is to achieve a look that is slightly less formal and tailored than the bottom right picture, despite the undeniable coolness of that rope ladder! Ultimately, we’re aiming for a playful yet practical aesthetic that kids will adore. And yes, I’m already claiming the top bunk for myself!
Bathroom Renovation Concepts: Blending Vintage Charm with Modern Refresh
A delightful discovery in our beach house adventure is a clawfoot tub – precisely like the one pictured in our inspiration! It boasts the same classic feet and silhouette. Currently, it’s quite a sight, scratched, rusted, and awaiting its vibrant new exterior paint job. But oh, the potential it holds! We’re eagerly anticipating its reglazing and its return to the bathroom. You see, the bathroom itself was literally falling off the house when we acquired it – a testament to the myriad “not-ideal” conditions we’re tackling! Let’s quickly pivot to more beautiful visions. For the updated bathrooms, we are keen to infuse natural tones and/or vibrant colorful accents, perhaps through the choice of vanities or distinctive floor tiles. John, in particular, is fond of the classic hex pattern visible in the bottom right inspiration image, though he envisions it in a softer medium gray rather than a stark black, to maintain a lighter and more inviting atmosphere.
Mudroom Functionality & Style: The Ultimate Beach House Entry
The mudroom space in our beach house is envisioned as a highly functional hub, primarily designed to manage all the sandy essentials that come with coastal living. It will serve multiple purposes: a convenient spot for corralling beach gear, direct access to the full downstairs bathroom (allowing guests to rinse off immediately after returning from the beach), and a dedicated area for tossing sandy towels straight into the washer and dryer, which will be neatly housed within the mudroom itself. We plan to incorporate some closed storage solutions for beach toys and towels, keeping clutter at bay. Beyond that, a few simple yet robust (and affordable!) shelves and hooks should prove more than sufficient. This isn’t your typical everyday mudroom overflowing with coats and backpacks; its design is specifically tailored to the practical demands of a lively beach house.
Kitchen Inspiration: Affordable & Unfussy Coastal Culinary Space
Given that the beach house kitchen will primarily serve as a space for preparing and serving a few cooking staples, we’re not aiming to fill it with an abundance of “gadgets and gizmos aplenty” (a little shout-out to Ariel!). Instead, we’re drawn to the idea of unfussy base cabinets, perhaps complemented by some open shelving, which can add visual lightness and easy access. Introducing a subtle pop of color on the lower cabinets is also an appealing thought. Our approach emphasizes affordability and embracing a slightly old or rustic feel, rather than striving for a top-of-the-line or super sleek aesthetic. We’re considering butcher block countertops, potentially on the island, paired with additional wood accents like stools. A freestanding piece, similar to the charming cabinet in the top left inspiration picture, would be absolutely perfect. Can we collectively agree to bring back the phrase “all that and a bag of chips”? Please?
Dining Area Ambiance: Casual Gatherings and Warm Vibes
“Dining room” might be too formal a designation for what we envision as a casual and inviting eating area in our beach house. We absolutely adore the relaxed and welcoming vibe conveyed in our chosen inspiration images. I’m particularly captivated by the combination of a black round pedestal table paired with bench seating, accented by coppery chairs and soft peach pillows – this equation seriously gives me all the warm fuzzies! The bottom picture also resonates deeply with its inherent coziness, featuring a beautiful natural wood table and a captivating woven light fixture overhead. While the idea of sheepskin-covered chairs is undeniably appealing for comfort, it’s probably not the most practical or smartest choice for a rental property where durability and ease of cleaning are paramount considerations.
Door Restoration: Preserving Character, Embracing Imperfection
My affection for the old wood and wonderfully chippy-painted doors throughout this house borders on the obsessive. We are incredibly fortunate to possess a veritable smorgasbord of original doors – a “doorgasboard,” if you will. Our firm intention is to lovingly reuse every single one of them. This commitment comes despite our contractor’s repeated warnings about the inherent challenges of making old, often crooked doors function properly within modern frames. Assuming we can successfully restore them to full functionality (a task we’re determined to accomplish, even if it tests our limits – I’m like a dog with a bone on this one!), we are confident they will imbue this old house with character for generations. Bring it on, doors. Let’s make this happen. Of course, after we’ve comprehensively addressed the mold and the termites.
Living Room Vision: Curated Comfort with a Coastal Twist
The living room, while not overly spacious, presents an intriguing design challenge with its unique and aesthetically pleasing curved wall. Our vision for this space is intentionally minimalist, not picturing an abundance of furniture. Perhaps a comfortable sofa, an inviting accent chair, a functional coffee table, and a TV will suffice. The key is that these selected pieces must be inherently interesting and visually appealing, especially since this is the first room guests will encounter upon entering. We are particularly enamored with the clean lines of the wooden coffee table showcased in the large inspiration image – we might even consider building something similar ourselves! The vibrant blue ottomans in the same picture sparked an idea: a colorful sofa or an accent chair could be a wonderfully playful and fun option to introduce personality into the space. The main consideration will be finding something dark enough to wear well and withstand the rigors of a beach house rental environment.
Bookcase & Display Ideas: Adding Lived-In Charm
It might seem unconventional to dedicate a separate category to bookcases, but even as we strive for a simple and uncluttered aesthetic in this beach house, we firmly believe in the importance of at least one or two well-curated, book-filled spots. These “lived-in” areas, adorned with books, magazines, and games, are essential for making those inevitable rainy days spent cooped up at a beach house so much more enjoyable and comfortable. Therefore, we’re including these inspirations to remind us of the diverse range of bookcase styles we could potentially consider. While we’re unsure if we’ll possess enough books to emulate the generously packed shelves in the top left image, a more casual wooden rack, like the one beneath it, could be a charming addition – perhaps in the bunk room, adorned with colorful children’s books to spark young imaginations.
Staircase Transformation: Honoring History, Injecting Color
The front, main staircase of the house will retain its original wood treads, although the risers and spindles are currently painted white. The captivating large image on the left has us incredibly excited about restoring these stairs to their former glory, envisioning beautifully refinished wood. Furthermore, we are thrilled to have the unexpected bonus of a back staircase. Some have questioned our decision to keep it, suggesting the layout would be simpler without it. The short answer is: we absolutely love it and the irreplaceable original character it adds to the home! Many of our neighbors expressed sadness over their back staircases being removed before they moved in, so we are downright giddy at the prospect of preserving ours. This back staircase is definitely in rougher shape than the front steps (its risers are also already painted white), making it a prime candidate for injecting some vibrant color. We’re considering painting the entire structure, much like the top right inspiration image, especially if the worn wood treads prove difficult to salvage. Alternatively, we might simply add a subtle hit of minty green to the existing white risers, drawing inspiration from the charming bottom photo. This would be a lovely way to honor its history while giving it a fresh, playful update.
Side note: I just discovered that baskets like the one on the floor in the top right picture are called “Belly Baskets,” and I absolutely adore THIS ONE.
And so concludes this “in-my-dreams-the-beach-house-will-be-this-fabulous” tour that’s constantly playing in my head. I’m certain there will be numerous twists and turns as we inch closer to a finished house that we can finally paint, furnish, and decorate. However, it’s incredibly enjoyable to brainstorm all our inspirations and see what truly resonates. One thing is certain: there will be charming built-ins! And soothing blue-green accents! And character-filled old doors! And bright, light walls! And cozy peach pillows! And an abundance of warm wood elements! Viva la beach house! Okay, now back to the highly unglamorous reality of tackling that falling-off-the-house bathroom situation. Thank you for daydreaming with me.
