Welcome back to the podcast, where we dive into all things home, lifestyle, and simplifying our often-complicated lives! This episode is packed with inspiration, practical tips, and a few laughs along the way. We’re kicking things off with a brand new personal shopping challenge that Sherry has bravely taken on for an entire year – a commitment to no new purchases in a pretty broad category. This isn’t just about saving money; it’s about intentional living and discovering the true meaning of “enough.”

But that’s not all! We’re also incredibly excited to share our conversation with simplicity expert Emily Ley. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the relentless pace of modern life, Emily’s insights will be a breath of fresh air. She’s a master at combating “busyness” and showing us how to carve out more time and space for what truly matters. Emily offers invaluable advice on everything from streamlining your family calendar to engaging your kids in the process of creating a more organized and peaceful home environment. Her practical, grace-filled approach is a game-changer for anyone seeking a calmer, more purposeful existence.

Beyond the world of personal challenges and simplified living, we’re also spilling the beans on some of our current favorites. We’re revealing our go-to method for hanging heavy objects quickly and securely, all without the usual mess of dust or an arsenal of tools. Plus, we’re sharing our newest guilty pleasure show – a reality competition that has us laughing out loud and, in Sherry’s case, even tearing up a few times. Get ready for an episode that combines deep dives into intentional living with lighthearted recommendations, all designed to help you live a happier, more streamlined life.

Embracing Intentionality: Our Latest Personal Challenges & Discoveries

We’re constantly exploring ways to live more intentionally, and this month, Sherry has embarked on a significant personal shopping challenge: a full year without purchasing any new items within a specified, rather broad, category. This isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s a deep dive into mindful consumption, designed to reduce clutter, appreciate what we already own, and potentially even boost creativity in mixing and matching existing pieces. It’s an experiment in satisfaction with sufficiency, and we’ll be sharing updates on her journey, the triumphs, and the inevitable challenges.

For those curious about how Sherry maintains her wardrobe, especially in the context of this new challenge, we’ve got you covered. Last month, we offered a detailed look into Sherry’s minimalist wardrobe in this comprehensive closet tour post. You can see firsthand how she’s organized her space and curated a collection of clothes that serves her well.

Furthermore, if you’re interested in the philosophy behind her choices, an earlier post from last year provides even more insight into her minimal wardrobe approach. Here, you’ll discover how she successfully makes a “uniform” work for her daily life, allowing for countless combinations through strategic mixing and matching. This method not only simplifies decision-making but also highlights the versatility of a well-thought-out, smaller collection of clothing.

Inspired by others who embrace similar concepts, we also wanted to highlight a fantastic example from Elsie Larson. If you’re considering a personal challenge of your own to rethink your consumption habits, Elsie’s 2019 commitment to only buy secondhand clothing for a full year offers a wonderful alternative perspective. Her experience demonstrates how focusing on pre-loved items can be both environmentally conscious and a fun way to refresh your style without contributing to fast fashion.

When embarking on any personal challenge, understanding your natural tendencies can be incredibly helpful. This is where Gretchen Rubin’s insightful distinction between Abstainers vs. Moderators comes into play. We discussed this concept on the podcast, and it’s truly enlightening. Are you someone who thrives by completely cutting something out (an abstainer), or do you find more success in moderation? Recognizing which category you fall into can be key to setting achievable goals and sticking to new habits, whether it’s related to spending, diet, or screen time. It’s all about tailoring your approach to your unique psychological wiring for maximum success and minimal frustration.

Creating a Life of Grace, Not Perfection: An Interview with Emily Ley

In our constant pursuit of a more balanced and fulfilling life, we had the immense pleasure of interviewing Emily Ley, a renowned simplicity expert and the visionary behind the Simplified Planner. Emily’s philosophy centers around the idea that true joy and productivity don’t come from doing more, but from simplifying, streamlining, and focusing on what truly matters. During our conversation, Emily shared invaluable strategies for combating the overwhelming feeling of constant activity and creating more time and space in your daily life. She emphasized the power of a well-organized family calendar, suggesting actionable tips to prevent scheduling conflicts and ensure everyone’s commitments are visible and manageable. Furthermore, she provided creative and fun ways to involve children in the process of streamlining household routines, making tidying up and organizing less of a chore and more of a collaborative effort. • A Simplified Life: Building on her core principles, this guide offers practical strategies for simplifying every area of your life, from your home and schedule to your finances and digital habits. It’s a comprehensive roadmap to decluttering not just your space, but your mind.
  • When Less Becomes More: In this book, Emily explores the profound benefits of living with less—less stuff, less noise, less stress—and how this reduction can paradoxically lead to more joy, more connection, and more meaning. It’s an inspiring call to embrace minimalism as a means to a richer life.

Emily’s work is a testament to the idea that a simplified life isn’t a lesser life, but a fuller, more intentional one, bursting with grace and genuine contentment.

Our Current Fixations: DIY Hacks and Must-Watch Entertainment

Beyond the philosophical discussions, we always love sharing the practical tools and delightful distractions that make our lives better. This week, we’re particularly excited about a DIY game-changer and a surprisingly captivating TV show.

First up, let’s talk about hanging things on your walls. We’ve all been there: trying to hang a heavy mirror, a large picture frame, or even floating shelves, only to find no stud where you need one. The old methods often involved a frustrating dance of pre-drilling holes, creating a dusty mess, and sometimes even dealing with anchors that don’t quite hold. But fear not! We’ve discovered the E-Z Anchor drywall anchors, and they have completely revolutionized how we tackle these tasks.

What makes these anchors so fantastic? They eliminate the need for switching out drill bits or creating pilot holes with a separate drill bit. Both the anchor itself and the included screw go in with just your drill or even a hand screwdriver, making installation incredibly quick, clean, and straightforward. This means less dust, fewer tools, and a much faster process. We use them constantly for those heavier items that require reliable support when a stud isn’t available. They come in robust 50lb versions, perfect for most decorative items, and for those truly substantial pieces, they also sell even stronger 75lb versions. We literally keep a box of both types around our house because they’re so incredibly handy. Trust us, once you try these, you’ll never go back to those old-fashioned anchors that demand pre-drilled holes and leave you questioning their stability.

And now for a bit of escapism! Sherry and I have been absolutely LOVING (and vehemently recommending to everyone who will listen) a reality competition show on Netflix called The Circle. If you haven’t seen it, you are in for a truly unique and weirdly wonderful experience. The premise is fascinating: contestants communicate solely through a specially designed social media app, allowing them to present themselves however they choose – as themselves or as a complete catfish. They rank each other, and those with the lowest rankings risk being “blocked” and eliminated from the game, with the ultimate goal of being the top-ranked player and winning a cash prize. It’s a fascinating social experiment, a masterclass in strategy, and utterly hilarious all at once.

The beauty of The Circle lies in its unexpected twists, the genuine connections that form despite the digital barriers, and the sheer audacity of some of the catfishing attempts. It’s only 12 episodes long, making it perfectly binge-able. We found ourselves laughing out loud at the ridiculousness, genuinely rooting for certain players, and, yes, Sherry even teared up a few times from emotional moments – which is saying something for a reality show! Trust us on this one; it’s the perfect blend of lighthearted entertainment and compelling social dynamics.
