Sherry’s Showdown with the Seaside Bathtub

The journey of transforming our beach house has reached an exhilarating phase, truly feeling like everything is coming together in fast motion. After dedicating well over a year to this passion project, it’s almost surreal to finally see it equipped with working appliances, a beautifully installed kitchen island, and even a fully functional kitchen sink! The progress is tangible, and the excitement is palpable with every new feature we get to use. However, not every new amenity debuts without a hitch. Take, for instance, Sherry’s much-anticipated first dip into our freshly plumbed clawfoot tub – an experience that didn’t quite unfold with the tranquil spa-like bliss she had envisioned. We’ll dive into the unexpected turn of events and how we eventually navigated that minor renovation hiccup.

Beyond our personal renovation adventures, this episode also brings you invaluable design advice. We tackle a frequently asked question: how to expertly mix and match various wood tones within a single room to achieve a look that feels intentionally collected and effortlessly chic, rather than haphazard or chaotic. This guide will help you create depth and character in your spaces. Additionally, we’re revealing the autopilot Christmas decoration that has captured both our hearts this year, making holiday styling easier than ever. And as a special festive treat for our incredible listeners, we’re thrilled to announce the triumphant return of everyone’s favorite segment, making this episode our ultimate holiday gift to you.

Beach House Updates & Holiday Wonders

The journey of renovating a beach house is a series of highs and lows, and this past week offered a perfect illustration of both. We were particularly excited about the clawfoot tub – a classic feature that promises endless relaxation. This photo, which Sherry enthusiastically sent me from the hardware store, captured her in what she hoped would be a perfectly peaceful moment, basking in the glow of our newly installed fixture. Little did she know, tranquility was still a few plumber visits away.

What started as a serene soak quickly devolved into a plumbing panic. The initial test of the tub didn’t quite go according to plan, leaving Sherry in a predicament that was anything but relaxing. It’s these unexpected challenges that truly define a renovation journey! The good news is that our dedicated plumber swiftly identified and resolved the issue. We’re thrilled to report that Sherry finally enjoyed a genuinely relaxing, panic-free bath last weekend, proving that perseverance (and a good plumber) pays off. It’s these small victories, like a perfectly functional and leak-free bathtub, that make all the hard work worthwhile.

A Stroll Through Cape Charles: The Holiday Cookie Trail

  • Beyond our beach house bubble, the holiday spirit swept through our charming town of Cape Charles with the annual Holiday Cookie Trail. This delightful event allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local community spirit, touring beautifully decorated B&Bs and private homes, all while indulging in an array of delicious homemade cookies. It was a fantastic, free event that brought together both locals and out-of-towners, fostering a wonderful sense of camaraderie and festive cheer. The architectural variety and holiday decorations were simply inspiring.

  • One particular highlight was visiting a stunning Bed & Breakfast that we can actually see from our own beach house. Its stately presence and historical charm are truly captivating. We learned that before its current life as a welcoming B&B, this grand residence was once home to a family with an incredible ten children! The owner shared fascinating stories, emphasizing that it’s nothing short of a miracle that so many of the original architectural details, such as the breathtaking window on the main staircase, remain in such remarkable condition. Preserving such historical elements truly adds character and a sense of timeless elegance to a home.

  • Another gem we adored walking through was one of the many beautifully renovated bungalows. This particular one caught our eye with its vibrant pink exterior – a bold and charming choice that, as you know, perfectly aligns with our appreciation for unique, colorful homes. It’s always inspiring to see how homeowners breathe new life into historical structures while maintaining their original charm. The attention to detail in these renovations truly shines through.

  • While this particular house wasn’t open for the tour, it’s a fixture we’ve always admired during our regular walks around town. Its distinctive architecture gives you a real sense of the diverse styles present in Cape Charles, from grand historic homes to charming bungalows. The kids especially loved seeing it all dressed up for Christmas, with festive lights and decorations adding an extra layer of magic to its already impressive facade. It truly encapsulated the holiday spirit of the neighborhood.

  • During our tour, we encountered some incredibly inventive design features. One that particularly stood out was the “rope railing” we mentioned on the podcast. This wasn’t your typical banister; it featured a robust rope that continuously snaked up and down the staircase in an elegant S-pattern, cleverly secured by steel clips on both the top and underside of the rail. It was a wonderfully creative and functional alternative to traditional railings, adding a nautical, yet refined, touch to the space.

  • At the very top of that particular staircase, we discovered a perfectly finished attic space that had been ingeniously transformed into a kids’ bunk room. This charming setup featured four full beds, each nestled into its own cozy nook, creating individual retreats within the larger space. It was an insanely clever and heartwarming design, offering both privacy and a sense of adventure for any young guests. This innovative use of space truly highlights the potential hidden within older homes.

Design Savvy: Mastering Mixed Wood Tones for a Cohesive Look

One of the most common dilemmas in home design is how to incorporate different wood tones without making a room feel disjointed or chaotic. The secret lies in creating a “collected” look, where various wood finishes coexist in harmony, adding depth, texture, and visual interest to your space. This approach prevents a room from feeling too monochromatic or matchy-matchy, injecting it with personality and warmth. While we’re focusing on wood tones today, a similar principle applies to mixing metals, which you can explore further in Episode #37.

Achieving Harmony: A Practical Guide to Wood Mixing

The key to successfully mixing wood tones is intentionality. Here’s how to approach it:

  • Identify Your Dominant Tone: Start by establishing one or two primary wood tones that will anchor your room. These might come from your flooring, a large piece of furniture, or your built-ins. This gives you a foundation to build upon.
  • Introduce Complementary Tones: Once your dominant tone is set, begin to layer in secondary and tertiary wood tones. Aim for a variety, but ensure they don’t clash too harshly. Think about incorporating light woods (like maple or birch), medium woods (like oak or cherry), and darker woods (like walnut or espresso). The goal is to create a visual conversation between them.
  • Bridge with Neutrals and Textures: To prevent the various wood tones from feeling overwhelming, introduce neutral elements like upholstered furniture in solid colors (grays, creams, whites), natural fibers (jute rugs, linen curtains), or metallic accents. These elements act as visual breaks, allowing the eye to rest and appreciate the different wood finishes without feeling bombarded.
  • Consider Scale and Placement: Distribute your wood tones strategically throughout the room. Avoid grouping all similar tones together. Instead, scatter them to create balance. For example, if you have a dark wood coffee table, place lighter wood chairs nearby. Also, consider the scale of each piece; a large dark wood piece might be balanced by several smaller light wood accessories.
  • Don’t Overdo It: While variety is good, too many distinct wood tones can still lead to visual chaos. Aim for 2-3 main wood tones, and then use subtle variations or lighter versions of those tones in smaller accents. The goal is coherence, not a showroom of every possible wood finish.

Let’s look at a practical example. The photo below perfectly illustrates how to achieve a collected, harmonious look by mixing various elements, including wood tones. In this living space, the design cleverly integrates different finishes to create a dynamic yet balanced aesthetic.

A living room showcasing a cohesive mix of wood tones and furniture, with a light wood dining set, medium wood TV console, and dark gray side tables.

Notice how the lighter wood finish of the dining chairs is intentionally echoed in the veining of the marble side table, the subtle texture of the blinds, and even smaller decorative items like a few wood frames and a charming wooden box positioned near the lamp. This repetition of a light tone helps to draw the eye across the room, creating a sense of flow and connection. Meanwhile, the richer, medium wood tone of the TV console serves as a grounding element. This deeper hue is beautifully picked up by the woven baskets flanking the console, and it also harmonizes with the warm, inviting tone of the hardwood floors that stretch throughout the space, creating a cohesive base. To add further dimension and break up the wood, the dark gray side tables (of which there are two, strategically placed) tie into each other and complement the soft gray tone of the couch. Furthermore, these grays subtly relate to the darker blue-gray colors present in the area rug, completing a sophisticated and intentionally curated palette. This thoughtful combination of light and medium woods, accented by carefully chosen neutrals, demonstrates that mixing is not just possible but highly desirable for a truly engaging interior.

That’s why we are absolutely obsessed with these LED Streetside Brightness Cordless Window Candles. We’ve been enjoying them for two Christmas seasons now, and they’ve become an indispensable part of our holiday decor. In fact, we loved them so much we just added them to the beach house too!

These candles are an absolute game-changer and a significant upgrade from the traditional plug-in versions. Not only do they offer a beautifully realistic glow, but their cordless design means no messy wires to hide or trip over, enhancing both aesthetics and safety. The real magic, however, lies in their “autopilot” feature. Once you turn them on for the first time at the start of the season, they automatically illuminate and turn off at preset times each day.
