Six Months In The Heart of Our Home

Welcome back to our home tour series! We last shared an update on this versatile kitchen and sitting area just three weeks after we moved in. Now, six months into our new Florida chapter, we’re thrilled to bring you a fresh perspective on how this essential space has evolved. While ambitious long-term plans for a full renovation are still on the horizon, our journey so far has been about making this room incredibly comfortable and functional for our family through a series of thoughtful, budget-friendly updates. Documenting these transformations with photographs has become a cherished practice, allowing us to marvel at the progression and appreciate every small step.

The past few months have seen a significant shift in how we utilize and enjoy this area. Following our initial move-in report, we embarked on several impactful, yet inexpensive, projects. We first tackled five small but mighty changes that laid the groundwork for enhanced functionality. This was swiftly followed by a cabinet painting project, which dramatically altered the kitchen’s aesthetic, breathing new life into the existing cabinetry with a fresh, modern hue. For those who, like us, love to peek behind closed doors, we also detailed how we organized our much smaller kitchen, proving that efficient storage is paramount in any space.

The Philosophy of Patience: Living in a Home Before Renovating

While a full kitchen overhaul remains a long-term aspiration, the recent updates have significantly elevated the current space, removing any immediate pressure to fast-track a major renovation. This feeling of contentment is truly invaluable. We’ve always advocated for living in a house for a few years before embarking on large-scale projects, if circumstances allow. Our experience in our previous home, where we spent four years before revamping the kitchen, reinforced this approach. Immersing ourselves in the daily rhythm of a space allows us to truly understand its nuances, identify what’s most useful and efficient, and ultimately lead to a more well-informed and successful outcome. Plus, it provides ample time to save up for those bigger investments, making the entire process more sustainable and less stressful.

Exciting Appliance Upgrades: A Secondhand Score!

Observing the kitchen now, you’ll immediately notice a few exciting new elements, most notably some room rearranging and shiny new appliances! I can almost hear my excited dolphin noise reverberating through the internet waves – a signature sound I make when absolute joy strikes! We managed to secure a fantastic deal on a full suite of secondhand appliances, a true steal that included a counter-depth refrigerator, which will be installed soon. Just take a moment to admire this stove – it’s a game-changer!

Our new stove, alongside our DIY floating shelf, cabinet hardware, and unique art sourced from this book.

We’ve genuinely never owned such high-quality appliances before. The entire Café appliance suite cost us a mere $500 secondhand (the counter-depth fridge is still on its way!). These units are only a few years old and are in impeccable condition. Each morning, as I step into the kitchen and prepare my tea on the new stove, I have to pinch myself; it feels like a dream. The transformation from our previous setup – an older white stove and a mismatched black dishwasher – is profound. Not only do the new appliances boast a cohesive aesthetic, but their improved functionality, especially the remarkably quiet dishwasher, has made daily life considerably more enjoyable. For a vivid comparison, here’s how the appliance situation looked just a few weeks after we moved in:

Strategic Layout Adjustments: Balancing Aesthetics and Practicality

The decision to relocate one of our two Ikea bookshelves further into the “kitchen” zone was driven by a desire to achieve several key objectives. Firstly, it aimed to free up more space in the adjacent sitting area, creating a more open and inviting lounge. Secondly, it allowed us to centralize the dining table, fostering a more balanced and visually appealing room, much like the inspiring layouts we’ve seen with tables positioned centrally in kitchens. However, this new configuration had to pass a crucial test: it couldn’t feel cramped or impractical within the kitchen itself. My husband, John, whom I affectionately call “The Efficiency Grinch,” has a zero-tolerance policy for impractical furniture arrangements. Instead of simply trying it and being prepared to revert, we meticulously anchored the shelf to the left wall and rehung the art, a move that officially signified its approval under John’s stringent “we-can-leave-it-like-this” test. It’s a testament to achieving both form and function.

From certain angles, the table in the photo above might appear unusually close to the refrigerator, but a head-on view provides a more accurate representation of the spacious clearance we actually have:

While it’s certainly not a sprawling football field of space, the layout works incredibly well for us without feeling restrictive or annoying. We can easily access the drawers on the left, which conveniently house various tools – a testament to our practical nature. Our pantry items, on the other hand, are neatly organized in the shelving unit across the room. These thoughtful storage solutions ensure that every inch of our kitchen is utilized effectively.

With the drawer closed, the kitchen maintains its sleek appearance. While accessing these drawers might be a tad less convenient when people are seated at the table, we’ve yet to encounter an urgent need for tools during a meal, so it remains a non-issue in our daily routine.

The Fridge Situation: A Tale of Convenience and Anticipation

Now, let’s turn our attention to the side of the kitchen that brings John an inexplicable amount of joy. You might notice the refrigerator currently protrudes slightly into the space on this side. However, a significant improvement is on its way! Our secondhand appliance suite included a counter-depth refrigerator, which will soon be installed. This upgrade will allow the fridge to sit further back, providing a touch more clearance and enhancing the overall flow of the kitchen. Interestingly, even in its current state, John absolutely loves this new setup. Why? Because it enables him to effortlessly reach for condiments like ketchup or soy sauce from the fridge while still seated at the table. His “go-go-gadget arm” extends, opens the door, and retrieves whatever is needed, all without the inconvenience of getting up. It’s a small detail, but one that highlights the immense practical benefits of a well-considered layout, tailored to daily habits. I truly wish I had a picture or video of this ingenious maneuver for you!

As you can see from the following shot, there’s still ample room to access items from the fridge when the chairs are empty. But when they’re occupied, that’s when John’s legendary ketchup-retrieving arm truly shines, making the most of this new arrangement. Perhaps I’ll capture a video demonstration for InstaStories – the sheer delight it brings him is genuinely hilarious. It’s truly the little things that make a house a home!

The Evolution of the Sitting Area: A Multifunctional Hub

Moving over to the dedicated sitting area, this relaxed zone has become an absolute blessing. While our upstairs family room serves as our primary movie-watching and lounging space, this informal downstairs nook offers a fantastic alternative. When someone is busy cooking or doing dishes, it provides a cozy spot for the kids to stay nearby, whether they’re reading, working on a puzzle, enjoying a snack, or simply hanging out. This bonus “hangout zone” is proving to be an invaluable addition to our home’s functionality, offering flexibility and comfort for various family activities.

This inviting space features comfortable accent chairs, a similar dresser, a soft rug, a vibrant blue stool, and a charming settee. The wall is adorned with captivating art by Teil Duncan, framed in elegant gold frames, complemented by our new coffee table.

A significant benefit of moving the second shelving unit into the kitchen area was the valuable space it freed up in this sitting zone. This allowed us to introduce a charming little settee, instantly increasing our seating capacity to a legitimate four people – a fantastic improvement! While a larger rug (an 8×10′ would fit with room to spare) could further define this entire area, we are absolutely smitten with our existing rug for now. To give you a better sense of scale and the cozy vibe, here’s a candid shot of me petting the world’s cutest dog in the space!

The cozy nook features our beloved rug, playful blue stools, a comfortable settee, inspiring art by Teil Duncan, our versatile coffee table, and the practical Ikea shelving system.

And speaking of new additions, we also acquired a new coffee table that has truly exceeded our expectations! We are particularly enamored with its elegant brass hardware and expansive surface area, perfect for holding drinks, books, or game boards. Best of all, it boasts an incredible amount of hidden storage, with two generously sized pull-out drawers. This has been such a significant improvement for organization! Recently, I stowed away a collection of winter essentials – hats, gloves, and jackets – making them easily accessible for those “frigid” Florida days (which, for us wimps, means anything under fifty degrees!). The other drawer neatly organizes all our tool batteries and charging equipment, once again proving our commitment to practical living.

You might notice in this wider shot of the sitting area that the chairs appear to block the doorway. Rest assured, this is merely an optical illusion due to the camera angle and does not reflect the actual clearance.

To provide a clearer perspective and illustrate the generous space, here’s a shot from the opposite side. This view highlights the spacious landing at the bottom of the stairs and in front of the main entrance, ensuring abundant clearance. Crucially, this layout also allows for easy opening of the laundry closet doors located on the right, proving that thoughtful space planning can accommodate multiple functionalities seamlessly.

A Quick Video Walk-Through for a Real Feel

To truly grasp the dynamics of this space, sometimes a 3-D perspective is best. We’ve put together a quick video walk-through to give you an immersive feel for our kitchen and sitting area. We hope you enjoy this virtual tour! You can watch the video here on YouTube.

A note about the video: you might observe a subtle difference in the table’s orientation compared to some of the photos. In the video, the table base is spun such that the chairs don’t fully nest over the pedestal base, instead terminating at its sides, as shown in this image:

Featuring our pendant light, similar table, kitchen chairs, Ikea shelving system, and our built shelves.

This contrasts with the way the base is usually spun in most of our photos, where the pedestal base slides between the chairs, allowing them to nest more closely:

Showcasing our pendant light, similar table, kitchen chairs, Ikea shelving system, and our built shelves.

Debating the merits of each table setup surprisingly led to quite an epic Instagram Story rabbit hole, complete with polls, live room walkthroughs, more polls, and an abundance of GIFs – it was truly “QUITE THE FRIDAY NIGHT” in our household! Essentially, we’ve experimented with both orientations. Initially, we leaned towards the setup seen in the video. However, invaluable insights from other pedestal table owners pointed out that chairs are generally easier to push in when their legs “hug” the table’s base (as depicted in the photo directly above), rather than bumping into the pedestal feet. So, for now, we’ve settled on the latter configuration. That said, I’m known for spinning this table around depending on my mood, so its final orientation remains an open question – a truly “Wild Woman” design approach!

Entryway Functionality: The Power of a Dropzone

Returning to the sitting area, the six-drawer dresser positioned strategically under the window has proven to be an absolute “clutch” item – a term I believe all the cool kids are using these days! This piece serves as our ultimate entryway dropzone, meticulously organizing all those grab-and-go essentials we need when coming and going. Think doggy bags for Burger, his leash, sunscreen, umbrellas, chapstick, sunglasses, and a myriad of other small necessities. Its thoughtful placement ensures easy passage through the area while still providing immediate access to its contents. It’s the perfect blend of form, function, and convenience, making our daily routines that much smoother.

And because we believe in being thorough, here’s a peek at the view from our bedroom entrance, illustrating the seamless transition into this multi-functional space. It’s always helpful to see how different zones connect within a home.

The previous shot, taken quite close, might not fully convey the distance of the blue side table from the door. This angle, however, offers greater context, revealing the ample space and thoughtful arrangement within the sitting area, ensuring a comfortable and navigable flow.

Future Enhancements for the Sitting Area: Evolving Comfort

We are confident that this charming little zone will continue to evolve over time, adapting to our changing needs and aesthetic preferences. For instance, a thoughtfully placed floor lamp would be a wonderful addition, not only to fill that subtle empty space but also to provide inviting illumination for any reading or puzzle-making sessions that unfold here. We envision it casting a warm glow, enhancing the cozy atmosphere.

Furthermore, once the settee was in place, we realized that the room could comfortably accommodate something even more substantial down the line. Perhaps a larger chair-and-a-half or even a small loveseat could take its place, absorbing the space currently occupied by the side tables (which are less essential now that we have a generously sized coffee table). A larger seating piece or double chair might also benefit from a proportionally bigger piece of art above it, creating a more dramatic and cohesive focal point. These are just some of the exciting possibilities for how this area might continue to evolve, blending increased comfort with refined aesthetics.

Even in its current configuration, this space already delivers exceptional comfort and functionality for our family. We are immensely satisfied with the “journey” this room has taken, appreciating every small tweak and thoughtful adjustment. We firmly believe that embracing these incremental changes is essential to achieving the best possible end result, as each minor adjustment builds towards a more perfect and personalized living environment. It’s a testament to the power of slow design, where a space is allowed to breathe, adapt, and truly become a reflection of those who inhabit it.

And so, that concludes the latest update on how this sweet room of ours has been coming along. It’s truly remarkable to reflect on the fact that many of its major components are still the cherished items that emerged from our moving pod back in May. This includes both Ikea bookshelves, the kitchen table and chairs, the two armless sitting area chairs, the rug, the entryway dresser, and all of our beloved art and accessories. This continuity speaks to the enduring quality of thoughtful purchases and the beauty of integrating personal pieces into a new space. Let’s also take a moment to appreciate just how much Burger, our furry family member, and all my thriving plants are absolutely loving life in Florida. We’ve never been happier!

Before & After: A Glimpse into the Past and Present

To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s conclude with a few compelling “before” photos for comparison. This particular image was captured on what felt like the rainiest day imaginable, lending it an especially gloomy and subdued appearance:
