Six Years Blogging And Its Giveaway Time

From Almost to Actual: Our Full-Circle Journey with Oprah and the Meaning of Home

What a remarkable journey it has been! Five years ago, during our very first blogiversary celebration, we playfully recounted the tale of *almost* making an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s iconic show. It was a memorable moment, albeit one that ended with us being bumped last minute for a segment featuring Ty Pennington and a deserving family in need of a home makeover. Fast forward half a decade, and it feels as though destiny has brought us full circle. This time, our connection with the Oprah universe isn’t just a near-miss; it’s a beautifully realized collaboration. And yes, that was indeed an intentional “O” pun – because sometimes, life’s most extraordinary chapters demand a little playful nod.

Experiencing the Magic: Our Short Film on OWN

Let’s dive straight into the most thrilling part: the exciting news! For those who weren’t able to tune in or stream the short film when it aired this past Sunday, the incredibly gracious team at OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) has generously provided a special clip for us to share directly with all of you. It’s a snapshot of a truly unforgettable experience, beautifully encapsulating our story. So, without further ado, here it is:

Unpacking the True Meaning of Home

One of the most profound aspects of working alongside Oprah’s dedicated team was their consistent encouragement to pause, reflect, and delve deeper into the fundamental question: What truly constitutes a home? And more importantly, what does it genuinely mean to the individuals who inhabit that space? This philosophical approach resonated deeply with our own ethos. Even in watching the final edited piece, the care and thoughtfulness with which they distilled a full day’s worth of conversations and footage were evident. Every frame, every word, seemed to cut straight to the core of what home signifies for us.

It served as a powerful reminder that while we, as home renovators and DIY enthusiasts, often immerse ourselves in the aesthetics of design, the perfect look, or the successful completion of a project, these elements, however enjoyable, are not the ultimate ingredients that transform a house into a sanctuary. They are merely delightful parts of a much larger journey, meant to be savored. Our daily aim is to embrace this perspective fully, enjoying the creative process without losing sight of the deeper emotional connections. We certainly don’t claim to be philosophers, but the talented editors at Harpo Productions possess an undeniable knack for making you feel incredibly warm and inspired, reminding us all of the deeper truths behind our everyday lives.

The Surreal Moment: Hearing Our Names from Oprah Herself

Hold on, because the absolute most “is this real life?!” moment arrived when Oprah Winfrey herself uttered our names during the intro of the segment, right before the clip you just watched began. And not only did she say them, but she pronounced them perfectly – correct pronunciation and everything! You can imagine the sheer disbelief and exhilaration we felt. Naturally, a moment this monumental demanded documentation, so yes, we absolutely had to record it directly off our television screen. It was an iconic soundbite we knew we’d cherish forever.

The incredible validation didn’t stop there. Immediately following the broadcast on Sunday, Ms. Winfrey shared a direct quote from our segment on her Twitter account. This wasn’t just a fleeting mention; it was concrete proof that she hadn’t only said our names but had actively listened to our story and connected with our message. The feeling was nothing short of a #brainexplosion – a truly mind-boggling, unforgettable experience that left us speechless and overflowing with gratitude.

The Genesis: How a Chance Meeting in Chicago Led to a Dream Collaboration

So, how did this extraordinary collaboration with Oprah and OWN come to fruition? To uncover the origins, we need to rewind over ten months ago, back to last November. Our book tour had brought us to Chicago, a city famously known as Oprah’s beloved hometown. It was during this whirlwind visit that we received an intriguing message through our publisher: a producer at Harpo Productions, Oprah’s acclaimed production company, expressed an interest in chatting with us while we were in town. Our immediate reaction? “Um, absolutely!”

Given the tight schedule of our book tour, the meeting itself was refreshingly casual. Picture this: “Meet us in the lobby of our hotel a couple of hours before we have a book signing” casual. It perfectly encapsulated the low-key yet impactful beginning of what would become an incredible partnership. It felt both surreal and perfectly aligned with the down-to-earth nature of our own blogging journey.

During that initial meeting, we had the pleasure of connecting with Heather, the wonderful producer who became our primary contact throughout this exciting process. Heather was not only amazingly kind but also radiating with enthusiasm for finding a way to collaborate. Her energy was infectious, and when she casually floated the idea of producing a 3-minute short film about our approach to home and design, we thought, “That sounds like a genuinely fun project!” Little did we know just how much more significant it would become.

Admittedly, after that initial meeting, we might have lost our minds just a little bit with excitement. The gravity of the opportunity slowly began to sink in. Our text message exchange, a frantic “text-fest” between Sherry and Roo, serves as hilarious evidence of our rapidly escalating enthusiasm. It was a mixture of disbelief, joy, and frantic planning, a true testament to the sheer impact of the Oprah name.

Lights, Camera, Action: Behind the Scenes of the Shoot Day

The actual shoot day took place back in May, meaning we were still residing in our beloved old house. As no “behind-the-scenes” blog post is truly complete without a playful “Look, John had to put on make-up!” shot, here’s the photographic evidence. The preparations for filming were a mix of professional precision and our usual chaotic charm, but the crew made us feel entirely at ease.

Compared to what one might expect from a national television production, the day itself was remarkably smooth and easy-going. By this point, we had cultivated a genuine friendship with Heather (visible standing on the far left in the photo below), so it felt wonderful to finally welcome her and her incredibly talented team of crew members into our home. Their professionalism and friendly demeanor made the entire experience a true pleasure.

However, no major production day is complete without a memorable, slightly hilarious anecdote. The most insane event unfolded within ten minutes of the crew’s arrival: Sherry, for the very first time ever, managed to throw out her back! She was in the living room, attempting some last-minute tidying, while the crew was meticulously setting up in the dining room. Leaning over the sofa to put something away, she described the sensation as if “someone pulled a piece of her spine out like Jenga.” She literally fell face-first onto the sofa, unable to move, and struggled to roll onto her back, praying that no one would witness her floundering. She eventually stood up excruciatingly slowly, then slinked into the bathroom to call her doctor. The prognosis: a high dose of Tylenol and as much rest as possible. Thankfully, the painkillers eventually kicked in, allowing her to somehow make it through the entire day. However, in person, she was noticeably stiffer than usual, explaining why Sherry now fondly describes our walking scenes in the film as “that time she waddled like a duck on national TV.” It’s a moment that captures both the unexpected challenges and the humor inherent in our blogging life.

The Art of Filming: Capturing Our Home’s Essence

One of the most captivating aspects of the day was simply observing the crew at work, witnessing them perform their creative magic. The way they meticulously set up shots, adjusted lighting, and framed scenes was truly fascinating. Here’s a glimpse into how they achieved some of those beautiful, artful shots of our (very much missed) frame hallway – a space that held so many memories and showcased our personal design style. Their ability to find the perfect angle and light truly elevated the ordinary into something visually stunning, capturing the essence of our home’s character.

Our daughter, Clara, was either at school or napping for a significant portion of the shoot day, but she happily joined us for a delightful family activity: baking cookies. This particular shot holds a special place in our hearts because it genuinely looks as though Clara is the star of her very own cooking show, radiating pure joy and natural charisma. These moments of authentic family life were crucial to the short film’s narrative, showcasing the heart of our home.

As part of the filming process, we also took the entire crew on a brief visit to our new house. This marked our inaugural shoot at the new place, with the intention of capturing some footage about our “next chapter” – to borrow a fitting phrase from OWN’s own lingo. Interestingly, none of this particular footage made it into the final edited clip. In hindsight, this was probably for the best, as we were all still in the very raw stages of renovation and settling in. Our collective sentiment at the time was likely “So, um, this is our new house. Please don’t look too closely yet!” It speaks volumes about the journey of home transformation and the reality that not every stage is picture-perfect for national television.

Reflecting on the Experience: Gratitude and Future Dreams

Our profound gratitude goes out to Heather and the entire Harpo Productions crew for their incredible enthusiasm, professionalism, and genuine excitement in working with us. We have always been immense admirers of Oprah Winfrey, her vision, and her profound impact on millions. This experience has only deepened our respect and appreciation, not just for Ms. Winfrey herself, but for the vast team of talented, dedicated individuals who stand with her, making such inspiring content possible. They are truly masters of their craft, and witnessing their collaborative spirit firsthand was an education in itself.

And for the record, to address the inevitable question: no, we never had the privilege of meeting or speaking directly with Ms. Winfrey during this entire process (as we learned she’s affectionately called around the office). While that direct encounter remains a dream, the experience of being part of the OWN family, even for a brief moment, has been an unparalleled honor. It has validated our creative endeavors and reinforced our belief in the power of sharing stories about creating a meaningful home. Perhaps, in another five blogiversaries, that personal meeting will have become a reality. With Oprah, and with life’s unexpected twists and turns, you truly never know what amazing opportunities lie just around the corner.
