South Dakota Summer Odyssey

Exploring the Unexpected: Our Unforgettable South Dakota Family Adventure

I’ll be the first to admit that South Dakota wasn’t initially at the top of my family vacation wish list. As someone who grew up on the East Coast and now calls Florida home, my travel experiences have typically leaned towards sandy beaches, bustling theme parks, or vibrant coastal cities. However, this past summer, a dad-and-daughter trip with my father and extended family members led us on an adventure to the heart of the American Midwest – and the experience was nothing short of spectacular. South Dakota surprised us in the best possible way, offering a refreshing departure from our usual travel routines. I’m excited to share the highlights of our journey, hoping to inspire other families to consider this unique and incredibly rewarding destination.

Venturing into the upper Midwest was a novel experience for us. Much like our trip to the California desert earlier this year, this journey allowed us to immerse ourselves in a landscape and culture entirely new to our family. The vast, rugged beauty and the welcoming spirit of South Dakota offered a fresh perspective on what a family vacation can be. Forget crowded amusement parks; here, the greatest rides were the winding scenic roads and the most exciting shows were the dramatic sunsets over endless horizons.

Why South Dakota Became Our Next Family Vacation Destination

South Dakota is a treasure trove of majestic landscapes, quaint towns, and unparalleled outdoor adventures. It boasts an impressive array of national parks, monuments, memorials, and historic sites that cater to every interest. Imagine exploring the otherworldly formations of Badlands National Park, delving into the intricate subterranean passages of Wind Cave National Park, standing in awe before the iconic faces of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, or witnessing the monumental scale of the Crazy Horse Memorial. Beyond these natural and man-made wonders, the state is dotted with legendary “Western” towns such as Sturgis, Rapid City, and Historic Deadwood, each brimming with character and stories. The sheer variety of attractions means there’s no shortage of places to explore, making it an ideal choice for a diverse family itinerary.

Our journey to South Dakota also carried a deeply personal significance. My grandfather, who immigrated to America as a child, first settled with his family in South Dakota. Although he moved away as a teenager, long before my father was born, the state holds an important, albeit somewhat forgotten, place in our family history. This trip, spearheaded by my dad, was conceived not only to see the magnificent sights but also to reconnect with extended family members who still reside in the area. It was a wonderful opportunity to bridge generations and rediscover our roots in a meaningful way.

What started as a simple idea for a dad-and-daughter adventure quickly blossomed into a larger family affair. My uncle and cousins from my mom’s side joined in, including a cousin whose daughter shares a special bond with our own daughter, despite living in different states. This transformed the trip into a fantastic opportunity for the girls to spend quality time together, fostering their friendship amidst new surroundings. Meanwhile, the adults enjoyed connecting in a relaxed setting, creating cherished memories without the complexities of organizing a massive group. My wife, Sherry, and I have also discovered the immense value of one-on-one trips with our children, and this experience further solidified our belief in such focused, enriching travel opportunities.

Mapping Our Adventure: Where We Explored in South Dakota

Our South Dakota adventure spanned just three nights, making it a relatively short but incredibly action-packed trip. Despite the limited time, we managed to immerse ourselves in a wide array of experiences, thanks to a thoughtfully planned itinerary. My dad and uncle took charge of the planning, which was a welcome change of pace for me, and they executed a brilliant schedule that maximized every moment. Here are the key destinations and attractions we visited, creating a whirlwind tour of the state’s best offerings:

  • Downtown Rapid City: Known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills,” Rapid City offers a vibrant downtown area with public art, diverse dining, and local shops.
  • Circle View Guest Ranch: A truly unique stay on a working ranch, offering unparalleled hospitality and proximity to natural wonders.
  • Badlands National Park: A geological marvel with dramatic landscapes, diverse wildlife, and family-friendly hiking trails.
  • Wall Drug in Wall, SD: An iconic, kitschy roadside attraction offering everything from souvenirs to famous donuts.
  • Mount Rushmore National Memorial: The unforgettable monument carved into the Black Hills, showcasing a pivotal piece of American history.
  • Custer State Park: A magnificent wildlife preserve where bison roam freely, alongside stunning scenic drives.
  • My extended family’s cattle ranch: A personal and authentic experience offering a glimpse into the heart of South Dakota’s agricultural heritage.

The vibrant flora, like musk thistle and sweet clover, added splashes of color to the Badlands’ stark beauty.

Due to our flight schedule, our daughter and I had limited time to explore Downtown Rapid City or Custer State Park, but the rest of our group thoroughly enjoyed these destinations. They raved about Rapid City’s charm and the incredible wildlife encounters at Custer State Park, including an unforgettable moment when they had to pause their drive to let a massive herd of buffalo cross the road – a truly authentic South Dakota experience!

Our Home Away From Home: A Stay at Circle View Guest Ranch

One of my dad’s primary goals for this unique South Dakota family vacation was to experience life on a working farm. This vision truly came to life once he discovered Circle View Guest Ranch, a hidden gem that became the heart of our trip. Conveniently located about 60 minutes from the Rapid City Airport, where we all flew in, and just a mere 5 minutes from the entrance to Badlands National Park, its location couldn’t have been more perfect. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough – it exceeded all our expectations for comfort, hospitality, and authentic local experience.

Circle View Guest Ranch operates as a cozy bed & breakfast, offering a variety of accommodations to suit different family needs. We chose between several comfortable rooms in the main house and a spacious “bunkhouse” capable of sleeping eight, perfect for larger groups or families traveling together. For the truly adventurous, there’s even an 1880s homestead cabin that offers a glimpse into pioneer life, complete with no running water or electricity (a level of “roughing it” we respectfully bypassed!). All the spaces we encountered were impeccably clean, wonderfully comfortable, and thoughtfully stocked with amenities that made our stay feel like home. From fresh coffee supplies and a selection of engaging books to family-friendly games like foosball and ping pong, every detail was designed to enhance relaxation and fun after a day of exploring the Badlands.

For us adults, the absolute highlight of staying at Circle View was the incredible breakfast served every morning. The Kruse family, who are the warm and welcoming operators of the ranch and reside on the lower level, invite all guests downstairs for a truly generous, hearty, family-style breakfast in their spacious kitchen. My single photo simply doesn’t do it justice – I was far too busy savoring every bite! Imagine plates piled high with homemade pancakes, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, savory sausages, fresh fruit, and rich coffee. The conversation flowed as freely as the coffee, creating a communal atmosphere that truly made us feel like part of the family. I would honestly return to South Dakota for the food and the company alone.

While the kids certainly loved the pancakes and smoothies at breakfast, their hearts were truly captured by the ranch itself and its delightful menagerie of animals. The property was home to playful dogs and their adorable puppies, friendly cats, busy chickens, and even a few hilariously vocal peacocks that roamed freely, adding a unique soundtrack to our mornings. At one point, during a phone call with Sherry, a peacock’s distinct cry provided an unforgettable background noise!

The Kruse children were incredibly kind and engaging, even showing our kids some of the daily chores involved in ranch life, like gathering eggs from the chicken coops and helping with light cleaning. This hands-on experience was a massive hit, and I’m fairly certain more than one of our kids harbored secret plans to sneak a chicken home on the airplane!

Above all, it was incredibly heartwarming to see our daughter and her cousins laughing and playing together, their joyous shouts echoing against the stunning, unique backdrop of the Badlands. The wide-open spaces and the freedom of the ranch provided an idyllic setting for them to connect and create lasting childhood memories.

Honestly, the kids probably would have been perfectly content to spend their entire South Dakota family vacation at Circle View Guest Ranch, simply enjoying each other’s company, chasing after chickens, and soaking in the peaceful farm atmosphere. It truly offered a unique blend of adventure and relaxation that resonated with all of us.

Adventures in the Black Hills: Our Top Activities in South Dakota

Beyond the charm of Circle View Guest Ranch, our South Dakota itinerary was packed with memorable experiences that showcased the region’s diverse appeal. One day was dedicated to a road trip, journeying a few hours to visit my dad’s cousin’s cattle ranch. This visit offered a fascinating glimpse into the cattle business, allowed us to pay respects at my great-grandfather’s grave, and culminated in a truly enriching conversation with my dad’s uncle, a WWII veteran whose stories captivated us all. While that personal encounter was a profound highlight, here are the other public attractions and activities that truly stood out during our visit:

Horseback Riding Near Badlands National Park

Admittedly, I’m generally indifferent to horses, so I almost opted out of this activity. However, I am incredibly glad I didn’t! Just a short distance from Circle View Ranch, another family member operates a small, private horseback riding excursion. We coordinated this through our wonderful hosts, making the experience seamless. She led us on a gentle, hour-long ride around the picturesque outskirts of Badlands National Park. Having not been on a horse in what feels like forever (if ever!), I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and easy the ride was. The horses were incredibly well-behaved, making it a perfect activity for beginners and children alike.

My photographs, as beautiful as they are, simply don’t fully capture the breathtaking beauty and profound serenity of the ride. We were particularly fortunate to catch an especially vibrant bloom of yellow sweet clover, which carpeted the rolling hills in a sea of gold. The landscape was so unexpectedly stunning that when Sherry saw the photos, she exclaimed, “This doesn’t even look like it was taken in the US! What is this, the Netherlands?!?” It truly felt like stepping into a pastoral painting, an idyllic escape into nature that revitalized our spirits.

Exploring the Wonders of Badlands National Park

Given its incredible proximity to Circle View Guest Ranch, Badlands National Park became a frequent backdrop to our adventure. We passed through its dramatic landscapes several times, always finding new vistas to admire. The park is a geological masterpiece, characterized by its eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires, interspersed with expansive mixed-grass prairies. It’s a place where ancient history is visibly etched into the earth.

During our main visit, we embarked on a couple of short, relatively flat hikes originating from the Notch Trail parking lot. The panoramic views were nothing short of spectacular, revealing layers of colorful rock formations that told tales of millions of years of geological change. The kids, in particular, absolutely reveled in the opportunity to scramble up and over the various rock formations, turning every turn into a new discovery. They explored natural caves and crevices, their imaginations running wild amidst the alien-like terrain.

Even for families whose children might not typically enjoy hiking, the Badlands proved to be a crowd-pleaser. The diverse and engaging terrain, combined with the sheer novelty of the landscape, kept everyone entertained and eager to discover what lay around the next bend. We also kept an eye out for the park’s famous wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs, adding an exciting element of anticipation to our explorations.

A Quirky Stop: Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota

Approximately 45 minutes from the majestic Badlands, we found ourselves in the small town of Wall, home to the famously kitschy and historic Wall Drug. Known for its ubiquitous billboards promising free ice water and 5-cent coffee, Wall Drug has been drawing travelers off Interstate 90 for decades. It’s an iconic American roadside attraction with a fascinating history, starting as a small drugstore during the Great Depression that offered free ice water to parched travelers.

Stepping inside Wall Drug feels like entering a time capsule of Americana.

While some might call it a classic tourist trap, Wall Drug was undeniably a fun and engaging stop for our multi-generational group, and a convenient spot for lunch. This “drugstore” has evolved into a maze-like indoor mall, offering an astounding array of goods and attractions. We wandered through souvenir shops stocked with quirky gifts, explored stores selling authentic Western gear, admired unique handcrafted items, and browsed a vast selection of toys and books. There’s so much to see and do that we barely scratched the surface in the time we had. Beyond shopping, you can grab a buffalo burger, enjoy their famous donuts, or even explore a replica T-Rex! It’s a testament to enduring American eccentricity and a guaranteed memory-maker.

Standing Tall: Mount Rushmore National Memorial

I had previously visited Mount Rushmore National Memorial during a high school family road trip (where we also stopped at Wall Drug!), but it wasn’t until this recent visit that I truly grasped its profound significance and scope beyond just a mountain carving. As a 40-something adult, I found myself appreciating the educational displays and visitor center exhibits far more than my 17-year-old self ever did. Learning about the vision, dedication, and sheer engineering prowess required to carve the faces of four U.S. presidents into the granite face of the Black Hills was truly awe-inspiring.

The impressive scale of Mount Rushmore is evident, even from below the carved faces.

The memorial offers a deeper dive into its complicated history, acknowledging the indigenous Lakota Sioux’s perspective on the sacred Black Hills, which was incredibly important for gaining a holistic understanding of the site. Beyond the main viewing terrace, there’s also the Presidential Trail, a short but stair-heavy hike that winds through the forest and offers unique, closer-up angles of the monument, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the intricate details of the carving.

The Presidential Trail offers a different perspective of Mount Rushmore, complete with scenic steps.

While the adults found Mount Rushmore deeply enriching, I’ll candidly admit that this stop wasn’t as huge a hit with the kids, who were perhaps more drawn to interactive adventures. They appreciated seeing the famous landmark but quickly grew restless with the historical presentations. In hindsight, we probably could have allocated more time to the boundless exploration opportunities within Badlands National Park, which offered more hands-on engagement for the younger members of our family.

In reflection, I embarked on this South Dakota family vacation with modest expectations, primarily anticipating quality time with my dad, cousins, and the girls. What unfolded was an extraordinary and delightful surprise. The sheer beauty of the landscapes, the warmth of the people, and the sheer number of novel experiences we managed to pack into our three days were truly remarkable. From horseback riding through wildflower fields to scrambling over Badlands formations and connecting with our family history, every moment was rich with discovery. My dad, not always celebrated for his meticulous trip planning, absolutely knocked this one out of the park, orchestrating an adventure that will undoubtedly be cherished for years to come.
