Laura’s paint-and-accessory makeover proves that elegant design doesn’t need to be expensive. Below is the letter she sent about her living room transformation.
I enjoy reading your blog and wanted to share some before-and-after pictures of my living room redesign. I’m a first-time homeowner in a charming older house — a Cape Cod built in 1951 — and over the past four years I’ve taken on projects that respect the home’s history while making it feel like mine. The “before” photos were taken before I moved in, so please excuse the clutter and temporary décor.
To complete the transformation I chose Behr’s Tide Pools for the walls and Behr’s Pot of Cream for the trim. I furnished the room mostly with pieces from Target, Pier 1, and JCPenney, and added accessories from HomeGoods, Marshalls, and Target. The curtains came from Christmas Tree Shops, and the framed photos are images I took while living in Spain.
Thank you for the inspiring blog — I get a lot of ideas from it. Keep up the great work! — Laura

And here is the same room after a few simple, achievable updates — the difference is remarkable:
Isn’t this a lovely and motivating transformation? This room demonstrates how paint and well-chosen textiles can dramatically change the look and feel of a space without a major investment. The color palette, crisp trim, and thoughtfully placed accessories create a cohesive, comfortable environment that highlights the home’s character.
What stands out most is how the Tide Pools wall color establishes a calm, contemporary backdrop while the Pot of Cream trim adds warmth and softness. The mix of new furniture and affordable accessories gives the room personality without overwhelming the architecture. The personal photographs bring in a touch of travel-inspired charm that makes the space uniquely hers.
Small, intentional choices — a consistent paint scheme, quality curtains, curated accessories, and meaningful artwork — can produce big results. Thank you, Laura, for sharing your before-and-after photos and reminding us that simple updates can yield powerful transformations.
