Sun Sand and Smiles in Destin

An Unforgettable Family Beach Getaway: Our Destin, Florida Vacation Adventure

For those eager to hear more about our recent family escapade, prepare for a detailed account of our incredible week-long summer vacation in Destin, Florida! Building on our past road trip and travel experiences, which you can explore here, this year’s journey to the sun-kissed shores of the Florida Panhandle proved to be an absolute highlight. With my extended family’s usual beach week on hold, and our plans already solidified for the Haven conference in Atlanta, accepting the gracious invitation from the Bowers to join them in Destin was an easy decision. It promised a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cherished family time.

Finding Our Perfect Miramar Beach Vacation Rental

The crucial task of securing our vacation rental fell to Katie Bower’s husband, Jeremy, who expertly navigated the search for a suitable home. A round of applause for his diligent efforts! Given that their extended family frequently rents in the area and vacancies can be notoriously scarce, they prefer to keep their go-to spots a cherished family secret. However, for anyone planning their own Destin family vacation, we found ourselves nestled comfortably near Miramar Beach. Websites like VRBO.com are fantastic resources for discovering charming properties and poring over reviews to find your ideal match. Our chosen accommodation, while not directly beachfront, offered the immense convenience of an easy walk to the pristine sands and sparkling Gulf waters. This proved to be a far more cost-effective option than splurging on a direct beachfront property, and it even boasted its own delightful private pool! It was, without a doubt, the perfect setup for our diverse group: four adults, three energetic children, and a tiny chihuahua, all seeking a memorable escape. And who could resist the charm of these fantastic bunk beds?

A Welcoming Oasis: Our Rental’s Outdoor Charm and Private Pool

What truly captivated us about our Miramar Beach rental was its exceptional outdoor space. The property featured enchanting arbors adorned with lush vines, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere. A charming courtyard patio offered a wonderful sense of insulation from the nearby road and bike path, providing a tranquil haven for morning coffees or evening conversations. This thoughtful design enhanced the feeling of a private, exclusive retreat.

Just beyond this inviting courtyard lay our second home for the week: a delightful private pool. While not expansive enough for competitive swim meets, it offered ample space for the children to splash and play, the adults to cool off, and even for an occasional doll to join the aquatic fun. This sparkling oasis became an indispensable part of our daily routine, providing endless entertainment and a refreshing escape from the Florida sun.

On one particularly amusing afternoon, the pool even served as an impromptu synchronized swimming practice arena, a clear sign that the sun might have been getting to us! Clara, however, absolutely loved every moment of it. More importantly, the pool offered a safe and comfortable environment for Clara to practice her kicks and gradually gain confidence in putting her head under the water. Or, at the very least, under the protective ‘daddy bridge,’ a heartwarming scene of parental support and childhood bravery.

The Undisputed Star: Destin’s World-Renowned Beaches

While our rental’s pool was a fantastic amenity, nothing could overshadow the true star of our Destin vacation: the breathtaking beach itself. We’ve had the pleasure of vacationing on Florida’s Gulf Coast before, but I distinctly remember being utterly mesmerized by the unparalleled whiteness of the sand and the incredible clarity of the water in Destin. It felt as if we had discovered a hidden paradise, a true gem of the Emerald Coast. Beyond its crystal-clear appearance, the water’s temperature and remarkable calmness were an absolute dream. This gentle ocean environment was particularly appreciated as it allowed Clara to embrace the waves and the vastness of the sea with an enthusiasm and fearlessness she had never displayed before, making for truly precious family memories.

Adventures on the Water: Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Destin

The unusually calm waters we experienced after the first few days felt like a clear invitation to try something new. We seized the opportunity to rent stand-up paddleboards from a convenient beachfront outfitter called La Dolce Vida. We secured two boards, one for each family, and after mastering the basics ourselves, we eagerly introduced the kids to the exciting experience. The paddleboards proved surprisingly easy to navigate, thanks in large part to the serene conditions, though nearly everyone (save for Jeremy, who seemed to possess an innate talent) managed to take an accidental dip at some point. I narrowly missed capturing Katie’s graceful spill on camera – she’s the one in the background of this shot – a fact she’s probably quite relieved about!

We quickly discovered that transporting the children on the paddleboards was significantly easier when the adults remained seated or knelt. This stance drastically improved our balance, and the kids seemed to feel more secure and comfortable being closer to us. At one point, Katie impressively managed to take both children out for a ride simultaneously, showcasing her paddleboarding prowess and a parent’s multi-tasking abilities.

Beyond the Waves: Biking and Beach Play

As enjoyable as the paddleboards were, the majority of our beach time was lovingly spent in the simple, timeless joys of playing in the gentle waves and meticulously constructing intricate sandcastles. Each day, typically around lunchtime, after ensuring the kids were fed, we’d carve out time for another activity before their crucial nap times. Cycling along the scenic coastal paths was a popular choice, made easy by the bikes provided with our rental house. (The convenient trailer carrying Will and Weston, however, belonged to the Bowers themselves, a clever addition for family biking adventures).

Clara rode with me in her iBert seat, an experience I always cherish. Our chosen game for these rides was guessing the color of dog collars we spotted ahead on the path, turning a simple bike ride into a delightful game of observation and anticipation. But perhaps the most endearing cycling duo of the entire trip belonged to these two little lovebirds. Their infectious joy and sweet companionship were truly heartwarming to witness!

The Joys and Jitters of Traveling with Toddlers

Speaking of adorable pairs, Clara and Will shared countless delightful moments together. I won’t sugarcoat it and claim it was all rainbows and skipping – after all, they’re both three, and the art of sharing is still a work in progress! However, having another child on the trip to play with certainly amplified the fun. And I should actually say “kids,” as Clara was utterly enamored with Weston, too. As parents, Sherry and I profoundly appreciated having other adults there to offer backup, lend a helping hand, or simply share a knowing smile through the occasional toddler tantrum. These shared experiences truly make family travel, especially with little ones, so much more manageable and enjoyable.

Destin’s Culinary Delights: Dining Experiences

We bravely ventured out for meals a few times – it is vacation, after all! – and thanks to excellent recommendations from both our readers and the Bowers, we indulged in some truly fantastic eats. My personal favorite meal was at The Red Bar, a vibrant and iconic spot (regrettably, my photo of it came out, well, too red to share effectively). Sherry, however, enthusiastically declared her extra spicy shrimp at Stinky’s Fish Camp (pictured bottom left) as her undisputed favorite, a testament to its memorable flavors. Another culinary highlight was the coconut shrimp lunch I savored at Pompano Joe’s one afternoon during a bike ride. Its direct beachfront location and distinctive, brightly colored architecture made for an unforgettable dining experience, sparking a wish that more buildings could embrace such a cheerful color scheme!

Rainy Day Fun & Last Day Adventures in Destin

A few reports of inclement weather in Destin the week before our arrival had understandably made us a bit nervous. However, we were incredibly fortunate! Aside from a few brief evening thunderstorms, we only encountered one truly dreary afternoon. This unexpected break from the sun, far from being a disappointment, provided the perfect excuse to explore some non-beach activities. The girls delighted in an afternoon of outlet shopping, while the dads and big kids embraced the thrill of go-kart rides. How we didn’t end up with the lucky number 7 car, I’ll never know, but the competition was fierce and the laughter abundant!

As with all good things, our last day in Destin arrived all too quickly. We suddenly realized there was a myriad of experiences we hadn’t yet managed to squeeze in – from sea kayaking to exploring local thrift shops, and capturing those quintessential family pictures on the beach. But through a sheer act of vacation magic and collective determination, we managed to make all of it happen on that final, memorable day. Sherry shared their exciting thrifting adventures in a separate post, but alas, no photos exist of Jeremy and me bravely navigating the (suddenly quite choppy!) seas in our kayaks. Fortunately, I did manage to capture Katie in her element, doing her professional photographer thing, ensuring we have some beautiful snapshots to cherish from our final evening.

The evening light painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, creating an almost impossibly perfect backdrop to conclude our incredible trip. It was a cruel beauty, making us wish we could extend our stay indefinitely.

The Journey Home and Beyond

But alas, all good things do indeed come to an end. The following morning, we packed up our memories and headed back towards Atlanta for a brief overnight stay with the Bowers before embarking on the second half of our 14-hour journey home the next day. Clara, thankfully, has proven to be quite the road trip warrior, largely due to our practice of undertaking long drives with her since she was just four weeks old. Our current tried-and-true tips for long car rides with a three-year-old include: an abundance of engaging books, a generous supply of favorite toys, plenty of delicious snacks, and a few strategic iPad games for those moments when desperation sets in. Around hour eleven, we all started to feel a little stir-crazy, but with perseverance and good humor, we made it home, full of stories and sand.

A heartfelt thank you once again to the Bowers for their generous invitation and for making our Destin family vacation such an incredibly fun and profoundly memorable trip. After twelve wonderful days away from home (a period extended by the conference beforehand), we were more than excited to finally sleep in our own beds again. And now, re-energized and inspired, we’re ready to hit the ground running with new projects – in fact, **we’re demolishing something exciting today!**
