Unearthing the Origins: The Pinterest Challenge Story

It’s funny how the best ideas often spring from the most unexpected places. Take, for instance, this highly amusing collection of our old Halloween photos. While they might primarily reveal our questionable taste in childhood costumes (seriously, that wolf schnoz!), they also serve as a nostalgic reminder of the creative spirit that ignites this challenge. Yes, the truth is, it’s high time for another spectacular fall Pinterest Challenge! For full transparency, this isn’t sponsored by Pinterest or any other brand; it’s simply a passion project dreamed up by the incredible Katie Bower to encourage us all to move beyond endless pinning and truly start creating. Reflecting on those childhood photos, I still chuckle at my wolf costume’s comically large snout. And I’m proud to admit that my 1996 “lady gangster” photo, taken in one of those classic dress-up boardwalk booths at Seaside Heights, remains a personal favorite.

The genesis of this entire Pinterest Challenge movement dates back over a year. Katie called me, brimming with enthusiasm, suggesting we should collaboratively challenge ourselves each season. The goal? To select one stunning inspiration we’d meticulously pinned and bring it to life. And thus, the “Pinterest Challenge” was born – a much-needed, delightful nudge to transition from mere aspiration to tangible accomplishment. We’ve had an absolutely fantastic time with each installment: our inaugural summer challenge, followed by our second last fall, our third in winter, and our fourth this past summer (oops, spring somehow slipped right by us!). So, dust off your cozy Snuggies, whip up some warm hot cocoa, and get those glue guns fired up! It’s officially time to ignite this DIY party.

The Simple Rule & Boundless Creativity: How to Play Along

Participating in the Pinterest Challenge is wonderfully straightforward. The single, golden rule is to infuse your personal style and creativity into something truly inspirational that you’ve discovered and pinned. The critical part? Always remember to link back to the original creator of the project that sparked your imagination. Whether it’s a major company like Anthropologie or a brilliant personal blog that set your gears turning, giving credit where it’s due is essential. We particularly love discovering projects from sites that thoughtfully include “Pin It” buttons on their posts, as this often indicates they appreciate the visibility and sharing that Pinterest provides.

The beauty of this challenge lies in its incredible versatility. Your chosen project can be anything your heart desires: a grand home renovation task or a charming small craft; an intricate sewing project, a delicious culinary experiment, a stunning piece of home decor, or something entirely outside these categories! The possibilities are truly endless, limited only by your imagination and the contents of your pinboards.

A Glimpse into Past Triumphs: Our Journey from Pins to Projects

Over the years, John and I have embarked on several exciting projects as part of this challenge, each one pushing our creative boundaries and adding a unique touch to our home. Our very first endeavor saw us crafting a charming clothespin light fixture for our laundry room. This project taught us about repurposing everyday items into functional art. Next, with the festive season in mind, I bravely tackled the creation of 38 homemade holiday ornaments – a delightful exercise in patience and intricate detailing that added a deeply personal touch to our holiday decor. Following that, I faced my long-standing sewing fears head-on and, to my surprise, successfully constructed a cozy, beanbag-style pouf for Clara’s reading nook nestled within her closet. This comfortable addition quickly became a cherished spot. Most recently, I explored my artistic side by trying my hand at creating some homemade art, proving that even a novice can produce something beautiful and meaningful for their living space. Each project, big or small, has been a rewarding experience, transforming a digital inspiration into a tangible, cherished item in our home.

This Season’s Inspiration: Our Latest Brainstorming Session!

As we gear up for this autumn’s challenge, John and I spent some quality time brainstorming ideas from the comfort of our bed. While we’re not entirely set on the final design yet – we anticipate it will evolve slightly over the course of the week – we have a clear vision for the core characteristics of our project. We’re leaning towards something substantial in size, something we can build ourselves (without the need for complex tools or fancy saws, making it accessible for you to replicate!), and crucially, something 100% movable. This portability means it won’t be fixed to a wall or built-in, offering maximum flexibility in our home layout. And, in a nod to one of Pinterest’s most popular materials, it will definitely involve some chalkboard paint! We believe chalkboard paint is practically a Pinterest icon, offering endless creative and functional possibilities. That’s all we’re certain about for now, but the excitement is building!

To further fuel our creative fire, here are a few inspiring chalkboard projects that are currently influencing our direction:

  1. This impressively large chalkboard that promises grand statements.
  2. This elegant leaning easel board from a fantastic blog, offering both style and practicality.
  3. This innovative door-chalkboard that brilliantly repurposes space.

Meet Our Stellar Guest Hosts for This Challenge!

You’re probably wondering who else is joining me and K-Bo (Katie Bower) for this exciting round. We love to rotate guest hosts each season, inviting talented individuals who have impressed us with their previous challenge contributions. This time, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome two incredible creators:

  • **Carmel from Our Fifth House:** Carmel wowed us during our summer challenge with her incredibly swanky door project, showcasing her impeccable style and DIY prowess. We can’t wait to see what she brings to the table this fall!
  • **Sarah from Ugly Duckling House:** Sarah captivated us with her bling-tastic gilded map art during the summer challenge. Her ability to transform ordinary items into something extraordinary is truly inspiring.

Psst – For those in the back who might have missed it: despite mentioning Pinterest numerous times throughout this post, please remember that this challenge is not sponsored, paid for, or endorsed by Pinterest or any other entity. This is purely a labor of love from a couple of eye-candy-obsessed gals who are simply tired of coveting beautiful things and are downright ready to turn those dreams into tangible realities. At least one reality, for now! Let’s get crafting!
