The Ever-Evolving House Vision

Welcome to another insightful episode where we dive deep into the continuous evolution of our home, sharing not just the completed projects but also the ongoing endeavors and surprising shifts in our design philosophy. Last year, our home’s exterior underwent a significant transformation with a fresh coat of white paint, setting the stage for an even more ambitious series of updates. Today, we’re thrilled to catch you up on the latest additions to our outdoor living spaces and what exciting changes are still on the horizon, including a major decision we’ve deliberated over twice! Beyond the paint and the practicalities of renovation, this episode also takes a reflective turn. We’ll revisit some of our most impactful experiments and compelling interviews from the past 149 episodes – discussions that profoundly reshaped how we experience and live in our own house. To inspire further improvement, we’re issuing a fun challenge to help all of us identify and implement new strategies to enhance our daily household routines and overall quality of life. Furthermore, we explore a truly intriguing concept: why someone might choose to purchase a house they’ve never physically seen, located in a town entirely new to them (!!!). While it sounds unconventional, the underlying reasoning behind this trend might be far more pragmatic and less audacious than it initially appears. Join us as we uncover the layers of home improvement, personal growth, and fascinating market trends that make up the fabric of modern living.

Exciting Updates: Our Home’s Evolving Exterior Makeover

A newly installed modern metal awning over a white house entrance, with visible brick patches and a hint of bluestone

Our home’s exterior renovation continues to unfold, bringing fresh character and functionality to our beloved space. The vision we shared for a modern metal awning, first discussed with you all in Episode #139, has now come to fruition! As you can observe in the image above, this sleek addition is finally installed, dramatically enhancing the curb appeal and providing practical shelter over our entryway. The process, however, was not without its intricate details and a few unexpected twists.

  • The Metal Awning Transformation: The arrival and installation of the metal awning mark a significant milestone in our exterior project. Its contemporary design perfectly complements the freshly painted white façade, adding a touch of architectural flair and definition to the front of our home. We’re incredibly pleased with the immediate visual impact it provides.
  • Addressing the Details: While the awning is up, the journey isn’t quite complete. You might notice that there’s still some meticulous work required to refine the area. After carefully lowering the lanterns to accommodate the new structure, we meticulously patched the brick holes left behind. However, the installation process inevitably left a fine coating of brick dust across everything in this photo, which still needs a thorough clean. More importantly, those freshly patched brick holes are awaiting their paint job to seamlessly blend with the existing brickwork. Furthermore, the door surrounding required partial reconstruction to ensure the awning was perfectly positioned, meaning we still need to apply fresh caulking and a new coat of paint to achieve a polished finish.
  • Anticipating Bluestone Elegance: Keep an eye out for an upcoming post that will delve into another exciting exterior upgrade: the beautiful bluestone on our landing. It’s a subtle yet impactful addition that we’re eager to share more about very soon.
  • The Shutter Debate and Inspiration: One of the most significant and debated decisions for our exterior involved adding shutters. We previously shared a photograph of a charming duplex, and as promised, here’s that reference image again so you can envision the impact of those inspiring shutters.

  • Our Shutter Decision-Making Journey: We openly discuss the extensive back-and-forth, the literal “waffling” that happened not once, but twice, regarding the addition of shutters to our own house. This episode provides all the intricate details of our decision-making process, highlighting the pros and cons we weighed and the ultimate excitement we feel about embracing this classic architectural element. We truly believe it will add depth, character, and a finished look to our home. Now, the final step is to select the perfect color for them. We’re currently leaning towards a sophisticated, medium putty-type color that will complement our white exterior beautifully without being too stark or overwhelming. This choice will be crucial in tying the entire exterior aesthetic together.

Exploring the Unseen: A Deep Dive into Roofstock and Remote Home Buying

  • The Fascinating World of Roofstock: In a world increasingly driven by digital convenience, the concept of purchasing a home sight unseen has moved from the realm of extreme speculation to a tangible, albeit still daring, reality for some investors and homeowners. Our curiosity was sparked by this insightful Curbed article, which introduced us to Roofstock. This innovative platform allows individuals to buy investment properties, often in distant markets, without ever stepping foot on the premises. The Curbed piece features compelling quotes from individuals who have successfully utilized Roofstock to acquire homes they’ve never physically visited, and perhaps never will.
  • A Blend of Fear and Fascination: The entire premise remains a complex blend of “scary and fascinating” to us. On one hand, the idea of making such a significant investment remotely, relying solely on digital information, inspections, and market analysis, introduces a layer of risk that can feel daunting. There’s a natural human inclination to want to physically inspect such a large asset. However, the fascination lies in the potential for market access, diversification, and the sheer efficiency it offers. For those looking to invest in specific real estate markets without geographical constraints, or for experienced investors who prioritize data-driven decisions over emotional connections to a property, platforms like Roofstock offer a powerful alternative.
  • Your Experiences Wanted: We are incredibly curious to hear from anyone in our community who has explored or successfully used Roofstock. If you have any personal experience with buying or selling through the platform, or even just researching its possibilities, please reach out! Your insights could shed valuable light on the practicalities, challenges, and successes of this unique approach to real estate. Understanding real-world applications helps demystify the process and provides valuable perspective for our listeners who might be considering similar ventures.

This early episode captured a lighthearted and memorable moment with Bravo’s Jenni Pulos, where Sherry bravely ventured into the world of beatboxing. It’s a testament to the fact that personal expression and joy are integral to a vibrant home life.
  • Episode #113: The Furniture-Free Week Challenge – Unexpected Freedoms
Following its initial discussion in Episode #112, we shared the intriguing, and mostly failed, results of our ambitious “furniture-free week” challenge. This experiment pushed us to reconsider our reliance on conventional furniture, forcing us to adapt and innovate in our living spaces. While not entirely successful in its execution, the challenge revealed surprising insights into how much space we actually need, the versatility of our existing items, and the often-unnecessary clutter that can accumulate. It highlighted our adaptability and the often-unrealized potential of minimalist living, even if just for a short period. The image below features my makeshift standing desk, a creative solution born from this very challenge.

  • Episode #97: Lessons from Our “No Spend Month” Challenge
In this episode, we openly discussed the invaluable lessons gleaned from our “No Spend Month” challenge, which we courageously issued to ourselves back in Episode #93. This rigorous challenge was directly inspired by Cait Flanders’ transformative book, The Year of Less, initially explored in Episode #89, and further elaborated through our insightful interview with Cait Flanders herself in Episode #96. The “No Spend Month” taught us profound lessons about distinguishing needs from wants, curbing impulsive purchases, and discovering alternative sources of joy and fulfillment that don’t involve consumerism. It profoundly reshaped our spending habits and fostered a deeper appreciation for the resources we already possess.
  • Episode #131: The Unexpected Joys of Our “No TV” Challenge
We shared the surprisingly transformative lessons we learned from our “No TV” challenge, originally proposed in Episode #128. This experiment encouraged us to drastically reduce screen time, prompting us to rediscover forgotten hobbies, engage more deeply with each other and our children, and simply experience more quiet moments of reflection. The insights gained highlighted how much time we unconsciously spent in front of the television and how reallocating that time could lead to richer, more meaningful experiences and a noticeable reduction in mental clutter.

We’re Digging: Our Latest Favorite Finds for Home and Lifestyle

A stylish Corkcicle canteen and tumbler, perfect for hydration and keeping drinks cold or hot
  • Sherry’s Hydration Essential: The Corkcicle Canteen
You might recall seeing the Corkcicle canteen featured in our show notes a couple of weeks ago, when Sherry enthusiastically shared her newfound love for True Lemon. This dynamic duo has been instrumental in helping her significantly reduce her reliance on LaCroix and Hint flavored waters, leading to a noticeable decrease in the number of cans in our recycling bin – a small win for sustainability! Sherry specifically uses the canteen version, which excels at keeping beverages perfectly cold (or hot) for extended periods. Beyond the canteen, Corkcicle offers a beautifully designed range of drinkware, including their popular classic tumblers, more compact short tumblers, and even elegant stemless wine glasses, all designed with their signature superior insulation.
  • Enhancing the Drive: The Amazon Echo Auto
I recently snagged the Amazon Echo Auto at an incredible half-price deal, thanks to a preview invitation I had requested months prior. Integrating Alexa’s capabilities into our car has been a fantastic upgrade, significantly enhancing our driving experience. We’ve particularly enjoyed the convenience of hands-free directions, effortlessly adding items to our Alexa lists on the go, and seamlessly playing our favorite podcasts and music without fiddling with controls. While I do concur with some reviewers that it can be a bit more “glitchy” than the regular Echo devices we have around the house – particularly struggling with voice commands amidst road noise and the radio – its overall utility and the added convenience it brings to daily commutes and road trips make it a valuable addition. Despite its minor quirks, I’m genuinely glad we made the purchase!
