The HGTV Effect

Unveiling the Magic: Our HGTV Magazine Photoshoot – A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Home Styling

It was an incredible honor, and frankly, a dream come true, when our home was selected for a feature in the latest issue of HGTV Magazine. For those who have already discovered it, you know the immense excitement we felt. To clarify, this stunning feature showcases our previous residence – a place brimming with cherished memories and countless DIY projects. While our current home is still very much a work in progress, and perhaps a bit too chaotic for a professional lens at this stage, the experience of having our old house immortalized in such a prestigious publication was truly unforgettable. We’ve received numerous requests for a peek behind the curtain, a deeper dive into the glamorous, yet often chaotic, world of a magazine photoshoot. So, without further ado, let’s pull back the curtain and reveal all the fascinating details, styling secrets, and funny anecdotes from our unforgettable HGTV Magazine experience.

The Creative Team: Meet the Experts Behind the Lens

The entire photoshoot felt like a whirlwind, a beautiful blur of activity, props, and creative energy. We honestly weren’t sure if we’d even managed to capture any behind-the-scenes moments ourselves amidst the excitement. However, a quick scroll through our iPhoto library revealed a handful of candid snapshots, perfectly preserving the memories of those two intense days. This particular image captures Clara, one of the incredibly talented editors from HGTV Magazine. Here, she’s offering invaluable feedback, ensuring every element is perfectly aligned for the camera. Her keen eye for detail and understanding of visual storytelling were instrumental in bringing our home to life on the pages of the magazine. You can almost hear her saying, “we need to see more of Clara’s toys,” a playful reminder that even professional shoots embrace the authentic charm of a lived-in space.

The HGTV Magazine crew was a wonderfully professional and personable group. Comprising a seasoned photographer, his diligent assistant, an expert stylist, and an editor, they transformed our home into a bustling studio for two full days. Their presence was a delightful blend of focused work and genuine camaraderie, making them truly gracious guests. Despite the significant disruption, including our dining room temporarily morphing into their command center and makeshift office for 48 hours, their respectful and engaging demeanor made the entire process enjoyable. It’s fascinating to witness the meticulous planning and coordination that goes into creating those seemingly effortless magazine spreads, and we were thrilled to be part of their creative journey.

Styling Secrets Revealed: Clever Tricks for Magazine-Ready Spaces

One of the most fascinating aspects of the photoshoot was observing the ingenious styling tricks employed to optimize each shot. For instance, notice in this image how our dining room, which usually comfortably seats six, was styled with only four chairs. This wasn’t an oversight; it was a deliberate design choice. The team strategically removed two chairs to create a greater sense of openness and to better highlight the elegant pedestal of our dining table. This clever technique made the space feel more expansive and allowed the architectural details to truly shine. It’s an insightful example of how professional photographers and stylists manipulate perspective to achieve the desired visual impact, offering a fresh way to appreciate your home through a different lens. Such subtle adjustments can make a world of difference in how a room is perceived.

Achieving that perfect, magazine-worthy angle often required a complete transformation of the room. There were moments when a space had to be almost entirely cleared, with furniture and decor moved out of the frame, to capture the ideal composition. This photograph illustrates the meticulous setup required to capture us in our home office for the magazine’s opening spread. The level of detail and precision involved in these adjustments is truly remarkable, showcasing the dedication of the HGTV Magazine team to every single shot. It underscores the artistry and effort that goes into creating those aspirational images we see in print, making every element intentional and purposeful.

Embracing the Creative Chaos: A Family Affair

Sherry and I have become quite adept at navigating the creative chaos that invariably accompanies a whole-house photo session. After enduring three straight weeks of intense book shoots in the past, a two-day magazine feature felt almost manageable! Our children, too, have grown remarkably accustomed to the flurry of activity, the moving of furniture, and the constant clicking of cameras. They’ve learned to adapt and even find moments of fun amidst the organized pandemonium. It’s a testament to their resilience and our family’s ability to roll with the punches, understanding that these unique experiences are part of our journey and offer incredible opportunities to share our passion for home and design with a wider audience.

The Stylist’s Touch: More Than Just Decor

Rachael, our photo stylist, was an absolute gem. Her talents extended far beyond simply arranging flower bouquets or fluffing pillows to perfection; she possessed a wonderful knack for connecting with everyone, especially our daughter, Clara. Rachael’s warmth and ingenuity were truly evident in her interactions with Clara. Faced with a house full of strangers and bustling activity, Rachael thoughtfully devised a secret handshake – a simple, comforting gesture of pressing their thumbs together – to help Clara feel at ease. While this photo might inadvertently give away their adorable secret, it perfectly captures the thoughtful and human approach Rachael brought to the shoot. We absolutely adored Rachael for going the extra mile to make our family, particularly our little one, feel comfortable and included in the exciting process.

Beyond her incredible people skills, Rachael, along with Jen, the editor, brought an impressive array of delightful props that truly elevated the aesthetic of each space. You might recall seeing this captivating Instagram shot of our kitchen, beautifully adorned with an assortment of pretty food and stylish accessories. It was a visual feast, a delightful combination of eye candy and literal sweet treats that transformed our kitchen into a vibrant, inviting scene. The careful selection and placement of these props showcased how thoughtfully curated details can dramatically enhance the visual appeal of any room, making it magazine-ready and inspiring for readers looking for home decor ideas.

This image of our kitchen perfectly illustrates the power of expert styling. We genuinely believe it’s one of the most beautiful photographs ever taken of this space. What truly impressed us about the HGTV Magazine crew’s approach to photo styling was the impeccable balance they struck. The kitchen wasn’t overly staged or artificial; it still felt authentically “ours,” yet it was enhanced and “fluffed” just enough to appear exceptionally inviting and interesting on the page. This subtle transformation not only showcased our home beautifully but also sparked new ideas within us for potential tweaks and improvements we might want to implement ourselves in the future. It’s a testament to their ability to highlight the best features while retaining the home’s true character.

The Cutting Room Floor: Unseen Shots and Unexpected Laughs

One of the only minor disappointments of the feature was that some of our absolute favorite shots, despite their beauty, didn’t make the final cut. We understood, of course, that far more pictures are taken than there is space for in a magazine, but there were a few that we had really hoped would appear. This stunning photograph of our recently completed fireplace makeover, a project we were particularly proud of, was one such casualty. It’s a bittersweet reality of the editorial process, but even the unseen shots hold special memories for us, documenting the evolution and charm of our beloved home.

This particular shot also introduced us to a delightfully absurd phrase that has since become an inside joke: “an aggressive sandwich.” At one point during the styling, someone deemed a prop sandwich to be excessively large, humorously labeling it “too aggressive” for the composition. The team eventually tamed its ferocity by removing a single tomato slice, much to everyone’s amusement. We all shared a hearty laugh about the minute details that go into these elaborate shoots. To this day, Sherry playfully signs off her emails with our new HGTV friends using “xoxo, Aggressive Sandwich,” a testament to the fun and memorable moments created during the shoot.

For those curious about “what could have been,” here’s another exclusive peek at some beautiful shots that, regrettably, didn’t make it into the final magazine spread. Each one captures a unique aspect of our home, meticulously styled and perfectly lit. They serve as a reminder of the sheer volume of incredible photography generated during such a session, and the difficult choices editors face when curating content for print. These images, though unseen by the wider public in the magazine, remain treasured mementos for us, showcasing the dedication and artistry of the team.

Unpublished shot of a beautifully styled room

Our frame wall, a beloved feature of our hallway, truly shone in these unpublished photographs, looking arguably better than ever before. This particular over-the-shoulder shot captures the hallway styled with exquisite fresh flowers, artfully arranged by Rachael. The care and attention to detail invested in every corner of our home, even those that ultimately didn’t make the final cut, are evident in these stunning images. It’s a wonderful illustration of how professional styling can elevate everyday spaces into works of art.

One can only imagine if the photographer experiences a touch of sadness when some of their carefully composed shots don’t make it into the final publication. They dedicate an immense amount of time and effort to setting up each frame, but it’s likely a familiar part of the industry. On a more practical note, you might observe that we had to temporarily remove the basket light from our kitchen. This was a necessary adjustment as it was casting undesirable shadows during the fireplace shot, highlighting the technical challenges and quick problem-solving required on set. It’s a detail that often goes unnoticed by the casual reader but is crucial for professional quality.

Despite some photos not making the final selection, we were incredibly fortunate to enjoy the immediate, vibrant beauty of all the fresh flowers that filled our home. Their presence brought an undeniable cheer and elegance to every room, regardless of whether they were captured in a published photograph. It was a lovely bonus, a testament to the enriching atmosphere created by the HGTV Magazine team during their visit, leaving us with not just stunning images but also a temporarily transformed living space.

Fresh flowers in a beautifully decorated room

Another shot that ended up on the cutting room floor depicted the two of us preparing food in the kitchen – a moment we also captured in this candid Instagram picture. Honestly, we are 100% convinced that we looked far from natural in the professional version, so we’re eternally grateful that it wasn’t published. (Put us in front of a camera with an audience, and we become especially awkward!) The most astonishing revelation, however, was the sheer scale of the feature. We initially anticipated a modest two-to-three-page spread, so it was absolutely mind-blowing when it turned out to be a sprawling ten pages long! This far exceeded our wildest expectations and was an incredible testament to the HGTV team’s vision and appreciation for our home.

A Floral Paradise: The Scent of Success

Speaking of abundance, the sheer volume of fresh flowers brought into our home was nothing short of spectacular. This, of course, meant that Sherry was in a state of pure, flower-induced euphoria for the entire duration of the photoshoot. A massive box of blooms was shipped directly from the bustling flower market in New York City, transforming our sunroom into a makeshift florist shop thanks to the convenience of our cooler. For the two days the crew spent with us, the air was thick with the most exquisite floral scents. Seriously, the room smelled like one giant, glorious flower for what felt like two weeks afterwards. Sherry absolutely reveled in it, while I admit, once the flowers were gone, the lingering, potent fragrance became a bit spooky (“Where is that smell coming from?!”). It was an unforgettable olfactory experience, nonetheless.

You should have witnessed Sherry, practically tiptoeing around the house, whispering, “If only they would last foreverrrrrrr.” Her deep appreciation for the beauty and ephemeral nature of these vibrant blooms was palpable. It was a charming glimpse into her boundless enthusiasm for all things aesthetically pleasing and a reminder of the simple joys that can elevate an everyday experience into something truly special and memorable. The flowers truly became a character in our behind-the-scenes narrative.

At the very least, we have these beautiful photographs to forever cherish the memory of our home transformed into a floral wonderland. They serve as a lasting reminder of the vibrancy, freshness, and sheer artistic beauty that the HGTV Magazine team brought into our lives, even if only for a brief, glorious period. These images are more than just pictures; they’re snapshots of joy, creativity, and an incredible experience.

Professional Insights & Decor Tips: Learning from the Best

Beyond tempting us to blow our entire life savings on an endless supply of fresh flowers (don’t worry, I’m diligently reigning Sherry back in!), the photoshoot provided invaluable insights and practical decor tips that we were inspired to implement in our own home. One standout lesson came from observing Rachel’s approach to styling the pillows on our sectional. She loaded it with significantly more pillows than we had ever considered using, and Sherry was, quite frankly, in heaven. Picture her channeling one of Oprah’s famously exuberant “a-ha moment” faces – that was the level of revelation! While you can’t quite discern the full effect in the final magazine shot, as it featured a picture of the living room with us in it, Sherry may or may not have, in a moment of pure inspiration, purchased some of those very pillows directly from Rachel at the conclusion of the shoot (they were a steal at $20 from HomeGoods!) to bolster her already robust pillow collection. Just imagine me, subtly rolling my eyes in the background, a silent testament to the persuasive power of perfectly fluffed cushions.

Furthermore, though it’s not apparent in the specific image above, a small side table in one of our shots was deemed too short for the perfect composition. Resourcefully, the team borrowed some scrap wood from our basement to give it a crucial lift, demonstrating the ingenious, on-the-fly problem-solving that is characteristic of professional photoshoots. You’ll also notice how our usual desk and mirror were temporarily relocated, making way for our charming chalkboard to take center stage in that particular scene. These seemingly minor adjustments underscore the meticulous attention to detail and creative improvisation required to achieve that polished, magazine-ready look, emphasizing that every element is considered and tailored for the camera.

Wardrobe choices also proved to be a fascinating aspect of the styling process. Specifically, one of Sherry’s loose-fitting shirts was deemed “too maternity looking” due to the way it draped in the initial test shot of us in the office. Consequently, she swapped it out for something less flowy, which is why she appears in a different shirt in subsequent photographs. However, in a delightful twist of irony and photographic serendipity, the original test photo featuring the pre-clipped shirt ended up being published in the magazine, gracing the very first page of the spread! It just goes to show that even with careful planning, sometimes the unexpected takes center stage, and a “mistake” can become a memorable feature. This anecdote perfectly encapsulates the unpredictable and often humorous nature of professional styling.

The Human Element: Personal Stories from the Shoot

For some literal “behind” the scenes dirt, when the team was capturing Clara playing in her charming “big girl room,” I found myself tucked away behind a wall in the closet. My mission was to remain nearby, just out of frame, to ensure she felt comfortable and secure while the photographers snapped away. The toughest challenge, however, wasn’t staying hidden; it was convincing Clara *not* to join me in my clandestine spot! This endearing moment highlights the balance between capturing authentic family life and managing the practicalities of a professional photoshoot, adding a touch of humor and warmth to the rigorous process.

Perhaps the most significant logistical hurdle for the HGTV Magazine team was capturing the exterior of our home. Late March in Richmond, Virginia, regrettably wasn’t quite showcasing its usual vibrant spring splendor that year. The landscape was still a bit dormant, and, to compound matters, we hadn’t yet begun many of the exterior improvements we had planned. This meant the team had to work extra hard to make the exterior shots pop, relying on their expertise to overcome natural limitations and still present an appealing facade for the magazine’s readers, proving that creativity can triumph over less-than-ideal conditions.

This explains why the photographs of our home’s exterior that made it into the magazine were either quite small or focused on close-ups of us on the porch. Despite the challenging conditions, the crew did an absolutely stellar job of infusing life and color into the scenes. Their clever solution involved strategically relocating our bright red Adirondack chairs, “borrowed” from the patio, to introduce a much-needed splash of vibrant color and a sense of inviting warmth to the outdoor shots. It’s a brilliant example of how resourceful styling can dramatically enhance a scene, even when nature isn’t fully cooperating.

A Bittersweet Farewell: Documenting Our Home Before Moving On

Intriguingly, while the article mentions our upcoming moving plans, we actually hadn’t shared this significant news with the HGTV team until *after* the photoshoot and just before we publicly announced it to all of you on April 30th (likely via an email Sherry signed with her infamous “Aggressive Sandwich” alias!). Consequently, they deftly added that detail right at the very end of the article before the issue went to print. Our moving decision was a deeply held secret, locked away in our minds until our new alarm system was installed and we felt truly ready to share it with the world. Before that, only our parents, siblings, closest friends, and our realtor were privy to the news. It was particularly special and indeed emotional to finally confide in the HGTV crew. We were able to explain how profoundly meaningful it was to us to have our beloved home captured in such a magnificent and lasting way, a beautiful documentation of its character and memories, just before we prepared to say goodbye. The crew, in turn, was genuinely thrilled to have been the ones to document such a significant chapter for us, making the entire experience even more poignant and memorable.

To conclude this behind-the-scenes journey, we are overflowing with gratitude that the esteemed team at HGTV Magazine considered our home worthy of their publication. It was an extraordinary privilege, and we’re immensely thankful for the unforgettable experience. Finally, we extend a colossal thank you to each and every one of you who has stumbled upon our story, read our adventures, and shared such incredibly kind and supportive words through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blog comments, email, and yes, even carrier pigeon. Just kidding about the carrier pigeon, of course – as you all know, we only accept messages delivered by ravens. Your engagement and encouragement mean the world to us, and we cherish this community that celebrates home, design, and all the delightful chaos in between. Thank you for being a part of our journey!
