Our Latest Home & Garden Transformations

Current backyard view with young trees

We often share the glamorous side of home renovation, but sometimes, the reality is a little less picturesque, especially when you’re in the thick of a backyard transformation. While we yearn for lush, vibrant photographs of our outdoor space, these quick snapshots from the fall offer the best glimpse of its current state. Patience is a virtue in gardening, and we’re eagerly awaiting the explosion of green in the coming months! In the foreground, you’ll notice our carefully selected ornamental trees, currently resembling charming “sticks.” The one taking pride of place in the front is a graceful ginkgo, known for its distinctive fan-shaped leaves, while closer to the shed, a beautiful weeping cherry tree is beginning to establish itself. These trees are central to our long-term vision for a layered, inviting backyard oasis.

Below, you can see a “before” shot of the yard, captured shortly after we first moved into our home. It truly highlights the dramatic shift we’ve undergone. The significant change you’ll notice is the absence of the large tree on the right, next to the yellow birdbath. This beloved tree, unfortunately, succumbed last summer, forcing a re-evaluation of our entire backyard arc. While we dearly miss its shade and character, its removal unexpectedly gifted us a considerably larger yard, less constricted and more open towards the house. This expanded space has opened up exciting new possibilities for landscaping and recreation, even though letting go of that old tree was undeniably bittersweet.

  • Our journey to a more structured backyard began a couple of years ago when we embarked on creating a detailed landscaping plan. You can delve deeper into that initial planning phase in Podcast Episode #5. While we initially didn’t plant based on the specific designs, the process was instrumental in galvanizing us towards other essential outdoor improvements. It directly motivated us to install a comprehensive irrigation system, acquire a much-needed storage shed, and finally pave our driveway, laying crucial groundwork for our dream yard.
  • Fast forward a few years, and the view from our house now tells a different story. The image above reflects the significant progress we’ve made: achieving lush, healthy grass, thanks in large part to the successfully installed irrigation system. We’ve also planted a strategic array of screening bushes and several young trees around the perimeter, which are slowly but surely beginning to fill in, providing privacy and beauty. You’ll also spot the pea gravel we thoughtfully laid under our outdoor table. This wasn’t just decorative; it served as a practical blueprint for where our future patio will eventually go. This exercise also helped us realize we’d prefer the patio to be a bit deeper than initially planned, as the current layout feels a touch narrow. This iterative design process is a hallmark of our DIY approach!

  • Here’s another perspective of our evolving backyard, offering a clearer view of the diverse plant palette we’ve introduced. Our selection includes a thoughtful mix of robust screening bushes for privacy, elegant decorative grasses that add texture and movement, and three carefully chosen ornamental trees: a vibrant maple, a unique ginkgo, and a graceful weeping cherry. We are absolutely brimming with anticipation to witness everything burst into verdant life this spring and observe these carefully chosen additions mature and fill out the space beautifully over the coming years, creating a truly enchanting outdoor sanctuary.

Clever Organization: Taming the Junk Drawer (and Beyond!)

Organized junk drawer

The infamous “junk drawer” exists in almost every home, often becoming a chaotic repository of miscellaneous items. However, with a strategic approach, even this notorious catch-all can become a model of efficiency and order. Our junk drawer, pictured above, perfectly illustrates a powerful, yet simple, organization technique: the intelligent use of containers combined with the discreet power of velcro strips. By carefully placing various-sized containers within the drawer, we create distinct zones for different categories of items. What makes this method particularly clever is how affixing these boxes in a thoughtful arrangement actually creates additional, smaller storage pockets in the interstitial spaces, neatly accommodating items like tape, a stapler, or a small flashlight without the need for even more containers. This technique prevents items from shifting, ensures everything has a designated home, and maximizes every inch of drawer space, transforming clutter into calm. It’s a testament to how even the smallest organizational efforts can yield significant improvements in daily functionality and reduce frustration.

  • For those eager to replicate this level of drawer harmony, here are the exact organizational tools we relied on: these versatile wood boxes, which provide a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing foundation, along with these adaptable wood dividers that allow for flexible compartmentalization. And, of course, the unsung heroes of secure organization: these reliable 3M Command strips, which hold everything in place without damaging your drawers.
  • The principles of effective organization extend far beyond just one drawer. If you’re inspired to tackle other areas of your home, you can find a wealth of ideas and see these techniques in action by exploring how we meticulously organized our entire kitchen in this dedicated post. It even includes an engaging video tour where Sherry walks you through every cabinet and drawer, offering practical insights and demonstrating how to achieve lasting order and functionality in one of the busiest spaces in the house.

Podcast Update: Decoding Home Decor Trends

  • Keeping up with the ever-evolving world of home decor can be both exciting and, at times, perplexing. Last week, we delved into one of the most talked-about and divisive trends currently circulating in interior design circles: the “backward book” phenomenon. If you’re curious about this unique styling choice, its origins, and our candid opinions on whether it’s a brilliant design hack or a bookshelf faux pas, be sure to catch our full discussion in last week’s insightful Episode #85. We dissect the trend from various angles, offering context and debate that will help you decide if it’s a look you might embrace in your own home.

Our Humble Beginnings: The Early Setbacks and Defining Moments

Every journey has a starting point, often marked by uncertainty and a series of “firsts.” Long before we ever conceived of a blog dedicated to young house love, before our marriage, and certainly before we owned any of the homes we’ve since renovated, our lives were a tapestry of modest beginnings and significant personal growth. As promised, we’re sharing a truly nostalgic and often humorous look back at our initial forays into independent living. These aren’t polished home tours; they are raw, authentic glimpses into our earliest apartments, captured years ago on basic point-and-shoot cameras, primarily for sharing with friends and family. They offer a unique window into the foundational experiences that shaped our perspectives on home, design, and life itself.

  • Our trip down memory lane begins with Sherry’s compact NYC studio apartment, the space she moved into following a significant breakup in 2005. This candid video, shot with the limited technology of the time, was originally intended for a friend, offering a glimpse into her new independent life. What stands out most remarkably, and provides endless amusement upon re-watching, is the hilarious revelation of what she kept (or didn’t keep) in her refrigerator during this transitional phase of her life. It’s a delightful reminder of how much can change over the years.
  • Next, we transition to the Upper West Side apartment in NYC that I moved into with friends. This was shortly after Sherry and I had begun dating, and once again, the “tour” was filmed by Sherry to share with a friend. Revisiting this footage brings a flood of memories and a good dose of laughter, particularly when we hear phrases like “we did a blue and brown theme in the bathroom.” It’s a charmingly earnest, if somewhat dated, reflection of our early attempts at decorating and making a shared space feel like home, highlighting how far our design sensibilities have evolved since then.
  • Finally, we share a tour of our very first apartment together in Richmond, VA. This significant step occurred in early 2006, well over a year and a half before the inception of our blog. Certain details from that time remain vivid, like the old fax machine unceremoniously sitting on the floor—a relic of a bygone era. We also distinctly recall the sheer thrill and immense convenience of having our very own washer and dryer, a luxury we deeply appreciated after years of shared laundromats. By this point in our lives, a quick peek inside the refrigerator thankfully reveals actual food, signaling a greater sense of stability and domesticity as we embarked on building our life together.
  • For those who enjoy a deeper dive into our personal history and relationship milestones, you can find a comprehensive overview of our early life together and how our journey unfolded in this engaging “Relationship Timeline” post from 2009. It provides additional context and charming anecdotes from the foundational years of our partnership.

Tools & Tales: Our Favorite Finds

Ryobi ONE+ Drill Driver

In the world of DIY and home improvement, having the right tools isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about empowerment. A reliable power drill/driver is arguably the cornerstone of any DIY enthusiast’s toolkit, and its versatility makes it an indispensable asset for countless projects around the house. You’ve likely spotted our trusty Ryobi ONE+ Drill/Driver making frequent appearances in many of our posts over the years, including its starring role in last week’s detailed bunk bed building guide. This tool is a workhorse, tackling everything from assembling furniture and hanging decor to more complex construction tasks with ease. Its cordless design offers unparalleled freedom, allowing you to move around your project without the constraint of outlets. If you’re just starting your DIY journey and don’t yet have a battery, we highly recommend this fantastic kit from Home Depot, which thoughtfully includes the Ryobi ONE+ Drill, a long-lasting battery, and a charger—everything you need to hit the ground running. For those who already own Ryobi ONE+ batteries, you can purchase the drill alone on Amazon for a budget-friendly price of around $40, making it an accessible upgrade or addition to your existing setup. Investing in a quality drill driver is one of the best decisions you can make for your home improvement endeavors, opening up a world of possibilities for your DIY aspirations.

  • Complementing any good drill is an equally robust set of bits. I always keep this comprehensive 31-piece drill and drive bit set conveniently within reach. Its wide array of sizes and types ensures that I’m prepared for virtually any screw or drilling task, preventing frustrating delays mid-project. And at less than $8, it’s an absolute steal that provides incredible value!
  • Beyond the essentials, there are certain power tools that truly revolutionize the DIY experience. For a broader look at our foundational toolkit, you can revisit an informative post we wrote back in 2014, titled: Five Power Tools That Changed How We DIY. It’s a testament to how the right equipment can significantly enhance your capabilities and confidence in tackling home projects.
  • And now for a delightful detour into the world of literature: Sherry has been absolutely captivated by the 5-book Selection series. She’s been utterly gaga for this Young Adult dystopian romance, which is currently a fantastic value, marked down from $49 to just $29. Since we recorded this episode, she has powered through two more volumes, and there’s clearly no stopping her! It’s the perfect escape after a day of DIY, proving that even the most dedicated home improvers need a good story to get lost in.
