Welcome back to the latest update from our ambitious home renovation journey! We’ve just put the finishing touches on our extensive brick house painting project, a transformation that has truly redefined our home’s exterior. This week, we’re pulling back the curtain to reveal all the exhilarating, and at times utterly chaotic, twists and turns we encountered. Trust us, the unexpected challenges were plentiful, often requiring us to think on our feet and adapt our plans. A project of this magnitude rarely goes off without a hitch, and ours certainly had its share of detours – more than once!
However, what’s truly remarkable is how these very challenges led to an outcome that exceeded our wildest expectations. The final result is not just a freshly painted house; it’s a testament to resilience, creative problem-solving, and the power of a clear vision. We’re excited to share why this project turned out even better than we had hoped, and what exciting ventures are next on our ever-growing list of home improvements. Additionally, John has an urgent request for advice from his fellow gadget enthusiasts regarding a potential new tech acquisition, and we’re also thrilled to provide more details about the highly anticipated launch of our brand-new furniture collection!

The White Brick House Transformation: A Project Deep Dive

- If you happened to miss our detailed post from last week, which featured all the nitty-gritty details and a full gallery of photos documenting the process of painting our house white, we highly recommend you check it out. It’s the perfect primer to get you completely up to speed on this dramatic exterior makeover. The before-and-after visuals alone are worth the visit!

- For an even deeper dive into the decision-making process behind our bold choice to paint the brick, you can revisit several past podcast discussions. These episodes capture our debates, the moment we committed, and our anxieties leading up to the project:
- In Episode #101, we first introduced the idea of painting our house, meticulously weighing the pros and cons of such a significant exterior change. It was a big discussion!
- By Episode #105, we had officially made the decision to move forward, a choice significantly influenced and validated by the invaluable feedback and encouragement we received from our amazing listeners. Your input truly helped us take the leap.
- Episode #118 captures our honest reflections on the stresses and concerns we wrestled with just before the painters arrived. This episode truly reveals the emotional rollercoaster of embarking on such a large-scale renovation.
- One of the crucial details that tied the entire exterior together was ensuring our siding matched the newly painted brick. In the photo below, you can clearly see some of these siding areas that received a fresh coat of the exact same Benjamin Moore paint. This attention to detail dramatically enhanced the cohesive aesthetic, and you can truly appreciate how unfinished the project would have appeared if these sections had retained their original, dated gray-brown hue.

- Our renovation journey certainly had its share of “Marathons of Insanity,” and Halloween provided one of the most memorable. The image below captures a progress shot from that hectic Wednesday, taken early in the morning as we frantically worked to reconstruct the porch. Our goal was to have it ready before the neighborhood trick-or-treaters came skipping up to our door. Notice the two prominent holes in the brick on either side of the new doorframe we were actively building. What initially seemed like a complication ultimately became a perfect opportunity to install new lanterns, adding both functionality and charm to the stoop. These challenges often lead to the best design solutions!

- Just a few short hours after that frantic Halloween morning, our skilled electricians arrived to tackle the wiring for the new exterior fixtures. We ingeniously mounted these fixtures on white composite blocks, which not only provided a clean, finished look but also perfectly covered the raw brick holes. This technique, which we also used for the front porch lanterns at our previous pink house, offers a rot-proof backing that serves as an excellent base and, in this case, safely sealed those critical openings in the brick. This thoughtful detail ensures longevity and aesthetic consistency.

- When it came to wiring the other fixture through the right-side hole, we fully anticipated some inevitable drywall damage inside the house. To our absolute amazement, the electricians managed a truly miraculous feat! They skillfully snaked the wiring down through the crawl space and then back up the wall on the other side, completely bypassing any interior disruption. This intricate process did involve one electrician robustly yelling instructions through the floor of our front closet to his colleague in the crawl space for about a half-hour, a dedicated effort for which we are eternally grateful. At one humorous point, the intrepid individual in the crawl space even exclaimed, “I don’t think I’m alone down here – I hear scratching… it might be a mouse!” Their perseverance saved us a lot of repair work!

- We weren’t exaggerating when we said the project came down to a “photo finish” a few days later on Friday. Lance, our incredible painter, barely had a few extra minutes to snap some stunning “after” photos for his portfolio, capturing the beauty of the newly painted white brick from high up in his lift. This project truly showcased the power of community, as our neighbors have never been more entertained and supportive of one of our endeavors. They visited multiple times a day to cheer us on, offering encouragement that still brings a tear to Sherry’s eye every time she recalls their kindness.
- For those interested in Lance’s exceptional work, he maintains a fantastic collection of before & after photos on his Instagram page. You’ll also find his contact information there if you’re considering hiring him for your own project. Lance is particularly renowned for his antique limewash applications, often traveling across the US to apply a specialized product called Classico. More examples of this distinct look can be seen on his IG account. If you’re drawn to the unique, classic aesthetic of limewash, Lance is undoubtedly the expert to consult.

- Finally, to complement the crisp, clean lines of our newly painted brick house, Sherry tackled the landscaping with her signature style. Here’s one of the “after” photos where you can clearly see what she affectionately refers to as our “Target ball” landscaping. This polished look was achieved after countless hours of meticulous trimming and shaping, taming a significant amount of unruly greenery into neat, spherical forms that perfectly frame the elegant white exterior. The transformation truly extends from the roofline to the garden beds.

- Below, we’re incredibly proud to showcase the Noble Dresser, a piece with a truly special story and deep sentimental value. Its design was directly inspired by a beloved vintage dresser that graces our own bedroom, a cherished heirloom handed down to us by my dad. He originally acquired it secondhand for a mere $100 decades ago, and we strongly believe it dates back to the 1920s. You should have seen the joy and pride on his face when he saw our modern interpretation of this classic piece in person – it was a truly heartwarming moment! This dresser embodies our commitment to blending timeless design with contemporary needs.

Will it seamlessly integrate into his daily life, or will it simply be another gadget gathering dust? More importantly, he needs to know: will owning an Apple Watch magically transform him into someone who looks effortlessly graceful and completely in sync when practicing yoga, just like the models in the ads? Please, DM, message, or tweet us your honest thoughts, personal anecdotes, and any advice you might have for John. We’re eager to hear from fellow tech lovers and Apple Watch users out there!
