The world of interior design is constantly evolving, throwing conventional norms out the window in favor of innovation and bold statements. One such trend that has been making waves, stirring both excitement and apprehension, is the rise of the open concept bathroom. Imagine doorless entryways, sleek glass partitions, or even freestanding tubs gracefully positioned within the bedroom. This intriguing shift prompts us to question the very essence of bathroom design and, more importantly, privacy. In this comprehensive look, we delve into the origins of this growing phenomenon, share our personal stance on the delicate balance of intimacy and design, and explore various related topics that make modern home living both challenging and rewarding.
Beyond the architectural discussions, this week’s exploration touches upon a myriad of topics close to every homeowner and DIY enthusiast’s heart. Sherry unveils a fresh, engaging date night concept tailored specifically for those who love to get their hands dirty with creative projects. Meanwhile, I reflect on my recent hiatus from social media, sharing an honest account of its multifaceted impact on my daily life – highlighting both the unexpected advantages and the subtle drawbacks. And for those who appreciate a good renovation story, prepare for a candid confession about how our ambitious half-bathroom installation quickly devolved into a series of unfortunate, yet ultimately valuable, missteps.

The Magic of Home Staging: A Quick Sale Story
Sherry recently mentioned a house she expertly staged, which generated immense interest and led to an incredibly swift sale. This property, which we visited together for an evening staging session, hit the market shortly after our episode recording. We were absolutely thrilled to learn it sold within an astounding 12 hours! This success story underscores the power of strategic home staging in captivating potential buyers and expediting the sales process, transforming a property into a dream home ready for its next owner.

My Journey to Digital Wellness: A Social Media Detox Update
The topic of digital overload and the quest for a healthier relationship with technology is more relevant than ever. In Episode #75, I first shared my initial attempts to detox from my phone and introduced listeners to the Moment app, a valuable tool for tracking and managing screen time. Since then, my journey has evolved. I’ve taken the plunge and invested in the Premium version of the Moment app (a worthwhile $3.99), which unlocked access to its intensive 14-day boot camp. This structured program offered fresh perspectives and actionable strategies that went beyond the free “Bored & Brilliant” course I completed back in December. The boot camp provided new insights into mindful technology use, helping me reduce passive scrolling, increase productive time, and cultivate a stronger sense of presence in my daily life. While the detox has had its challenges, the overall impact on my focus and well-being has been profoundly positive, proving that a conscious effort towards digital wellness can yield significant benefits.
Renovation Realities: Our Half-Bathroom Blunder
Every home renovation journey comes with its share of unexpected twists, turns, and sometimes, outright blunders. Our experience installing a console sink in our half-bathroom is a perfect example of how even the most well-intentioned DIY project can go awry, leading to a truly embarrassing, yet ultimately successful, ordeal.

-
The Infamous Console Sink Installation
The photo above captures the console sink that caused us so much grief during its installation. While Signature Hardware no longer carries this exact model, they offer a wide range of similar console sinks that can bring a touch of elegance and openness to any bathroom. Our particular challenge involved a “traumatic leg-related fiasco” – a memorable (and at the time, highly frustrating) incident where we struggled immensely with securing the legs and aligning the plumbing correctly. It felt like every step forward was met with two steps back, testing our patience and DIY skills to their limits.
-
A Bathroom’s Evolution: From Drab to Delightful (Eventually)
Before our full-scale renovation, the bathroom had a distinctly different look. The image below (left) showcases its appearance when we first purchased the house – functional, but certainly lacking character. We then undertook a quick paint-and-accessories update (right picture) to give it a temporary refresh, a common strategy for homeowners looking to spruce up a space before committing to a more extensive overhaul years later. This interim step allowed us to live with the space and truly envision its potential.

-
The Unrecorded Renovation: A Blast from the Past
It’s true, we don’t have extensive documentation of this particular remodel, largely because it occurred during a period when we weren’t actively blogging about every project. However, the memories (and some archival photos!) remain. Here I am, caught mid-demo, perhaps a little too jovial given the challenges that lay ahead. My cheerful pose in the image below, oblivious to the plumbing nightmares and installation headaches to come, now serves as a humorous reminder of our pre-renovation optimism.

-
Creative Solutions for Exposed Plumbing
Once the demolition was complete and the room stripped down (save for my ever-present shoes, as you can see below), we faced the aesthetic challenge of exposed PVC pipes. A fun fact about this renovation: we didn’t replace any of the existing plumbing. Instead, to give the exposed black PVC pipes a more polished and intentional look, we simply spray-painted them silver. This simple, cost-effective solution elevated the industrial aesthetic and seamlessly integrated the plumbing into the design of the newly opened space.

-
The Relief of Completion
After navigating the complexities of the “traumatic leg-related fiasco” and finally resolving all the plumbing hurdles, the moment of hooking everything up was met with immense relief. The photo below captures that feeling – a sense of accomplishment and the quiet satisfaction that comes after overcoming a challenging DIY project. It’s a testament to perseverance and the rewarding feeling of seeing a vision come to life, even if it took a few detours along the way.

Deep Dive: Real-World Open Concept Experiences & Expert Opinions
The concept of merging private and public spaces, particularly in the bathroom, continues to spark debate and curiosity among homeowners and designers alike. Our listener questions often revolve around these modern trends, pushing us to explore the practicalities and implications of such design choices.

Our Hotel Encounters with Open Concept Design
During our book tours, we’ve had the opportunity to stay in numerous hotels, some of which presented us with bold, open-concept bathroom designs that truly tested the boundaries of conventional privacy. One notable experience was at The Dream Hotel in South Beach, Miami, during our book tour stop. The photo above gives you a glimpse into their intriguing design, which featured a toilet behind a glass wall. This arrangement certainly led to some memorable “toilet memories,” prompting immediate discussions about personal comfort levels and the varying interpretations of privacy in modern hospitality design.

Another amusing anecdote comes from our Toronto book tour stop back in 2012. While the hotel’s name escapes us, the design detail certainly doesn’t! We recalled the glass shower enclosure having blinds, but what truly made us laugh when we rediscovered an old photo was the realization that these blinds were on the outside of the shower. This meant that the person showering had no control over their privacy – a comical, yet thought-provoking, design choice that highlights the potential pitfalls of open concept without proper consideration for user experience.

The Nightmare Roommate Article: A Gripping Read
Prepare yourself for a fascinating and utterly terrifying read about a truly nightmare roommate. This captivating article, published by NYMag, delves into a deeply unsettling real-life saga that is eerily reminiscent of the popular “Dirty John” podcast, which we previously discussed in Episode #69. It’s a chilling account of manipulation, deceit, and the psychological impact of living with a truly terrible individual. The Charm of Little Tabletop Clocks
Sometimes, the simplest additions can make the biggest difference in a space. “Little tabletop clocks” might be easier to conceptualize than to articulate, but their charm is undeniable. We recently acquired this adorable little pink clock for our kitchen, and it has quickly become a beloved functional accent. It not only tells time but also adds a pop of color and a touch of nostalgic whimsy to the space.

And for those who, like us, appreciate a peaceful environment free from constant ticking, Sherry has thoughtfully curated a selection of beautiful tabletop clocks that operate silently. These “no-tick” options are perfect for bedrooms, offices, or any space where tranquility is paramount (note: #1 and #5 are specifically listed as no-tick, others are generally quiet designs): 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6.
