Transform Your Kitchen: Smart Storage Solutions

The culinary command center is back in the spotlight, and this time, we’re inviting you beyond the surface. We’re pulling back the curtain, or rather, throwing open the scenes doors & drawers, to reveal the meticulous organization behind our kitchen’s improved functionality. Ever wondered where the trash disappears to? How about the dedicated spot for sharp knives, or the perfect nook for that morning smoothie blender? And where, oh where, does all the glorious food reside? Prepare to have all your burning questions answered! To make this grand reveal truly immersive, we’ve even captured a quick video tour, inspired by the fantastic kitchen organization tour Chris & Julia shared last year. Before we delve into the nitty-gritty details of our kitchen storage solutions, if you haven’t already explored the full kitchen reveal post from last week, we highly recommend a quick detour to get the complete picture of our bright, white kitchen transformation.

While the aesthetic transformation of our kitchen brought immense joy, the true triumph lies in its vastly improved functionality. A visually appealing space is wonderful, but a kitchen that truly works for you, day in and day out, is invaluable. After carefully deciding on a completely revamped room layout, the journey wasn’t over. We faced countless decisions regarding the optimal placement of various cabinet types and drawers, and subsequently, how to organize every single item for maximum efficiency and convenience. To tackle this challenge, we thoughtfully divided the kitchen into distinct “zones,” much like the diagram you see, and then meticulously arranged everything accordingly. This strategic approach to kitchen storage has revolutionized our daily routines, making cooking, cleaning, and entertaining an absolute breeze.

We’ll guide you through each of these functional zones in just a moment, offering a comprehensive overview of our design choices and organizational hacks. However, for the most immersive and detailed experience, nothing quite beats the video tour. Watch as Sherry effortlessly navigates the kitchen, expertly opening drawers and cabinet doors, revealing precisely what went where and, more importantly, the reasoning behind each thoughtful decision. This dynamic visual tour offers insights that static images simply cannot convey, demonstrating the flow and accessibility of our optimized kitchen space.

During the filming of our kitchen tour, you might have caught an intermittent soundtrack of a desperate little bark. Turns out, Burger, our beloved Chihuahua, was upstairs feeling a profound sense of FOMO. The kids had closed the bonus room door, and his keen senses detected the unmistakable aroma of snacks being consumed without him, leading to his passionate pleas for popcorn. Such is life with Chihuahuas, a constant source of entertainment and dramatic declarations of hunger!

As Sherry explains in the video, you’ll notice that not every cabinet is completely filled to the brim. This was a deliberate choice, as we wanted to avoid an immediate sense of clutter or being crammed full of stuff. The beauty of this approach is that the extra storage space provides valuable flexibility. We anticipate that as our children grow, and our collection of kitchen gadgets inevitably expands, this additional room will prove incredibly useful. Who knows, perhaps one day we’ll even dramatically shake our fists at the sky and exclaim, “Curse you, abundant storage!” But for now, it’s a welcome luxury that keeps our kitchen feeling light and airy.

While the video offers the most thorough exploration of our kitchen organization, we’ve also prepared a detailed breakdown of how we utilize each functional zone, complete with accompanying photos. These snapshots will complement the video, providing a closer look at specific organizational strategies within each area. We haven’t captured every single drawer, as that would be an exhaustive endeavor, but this comprehensive guide will give you a clear understanding of our thoughtful storage solutions.

The Island Zone: The Heart of Our Kitchen’s Efficiency

Our expansive kitchen island stands as a central hub of activity and storage. It primarily consists of a series of large, deep drawers positioned along the side facing the window, providing an abundance of easily accessible storage. On either end, the island is neatly capped off by conventional cabinets. While some homeowners might opt for open, decorative shelves at these ends, we made a conscious decision to go with doored cabinets. We knew Sherry would have ample decorative opportunities with the nearby living room built-ins we designed, so practicality won the day here. This proved to be an excellent choice, as these end cabinets now house an eclectic assortment of items, from cookbooks and directories to various supplies we utilize in the adjacent living room. This includes Sherry’s indispensable sewing box, perfect for quick button repairs while catching up on the latest reality TV drama, like “Real Housewives” (because sometimes, a little mending and a lot of drama go hand-in-hand).

You may recall from our last post that our microwave is cleverly integrated beneath the island, a design choice we absolutely love for its seamless appearance and accessibility. However, this particular photo is shared again to spotlight the stack of deep drawers situated to its left. This prime location is dedicated to housing all of our everyday dishes and silverware, and let me tell you, it. is. AWESOME. This strategic placement simplifies setting the table and makes meal prep incredibly efficient, truly enhancing the ergonomic flow of our kitchen. We cannot emphasize enough how much this single organizational decision has improved our daily kitchen experience, making it a cornerstone of our functional kitchen design.

There are simply not enough capital letters in the entire alphabet to adequately express our profound love for storing our dishes in drawers. For years, my sister has championed the benefits of plate and bowl drawers, and now, we are enthusiastic, card-carrying members of this fan club. As Sherry demonstrated in the video, we’ve implemented spring-loaded, wood-toned dividers to neatly segment the spacious drawers, ensuring everything stays in its designated spot. Additionally, an expandable silverware organizer keeps our flatware tidy and easily accessible. The convenience of having all our place setting essentials within arm’s reach of the island seating is unparalleled, streamlining meal times and making entertaining effortless. This thoughtful kitchen organization solution has truly transformed our routines.

Beyond the sheer convenience during meal prep and serving, this drawer-based dish storage system offers a significant advantage when it comes to unloading the dishwasher. Gone are the days of constant bending and reaching between a low-set dishwasher and high upper cabinets or shelves. Now, the process is incredibly ergonomic; you simply open the dish drawers, and everything is at a comfortable height, making the task significantly easier and more efficient. This small but impactful change truly contributes to a more fluid and less strenuous kitchen workflow, proving that smart kitchen storage solutions can make a big difference.

You can observe the smooth operation of these drawers in the video, noting how the stacks of plates and bowls remain remarkably stable, resisting any significant shifting as the drawers glide open and shut. The strategically placed dividers are key to maintaining this order. They create clear delineations for each type of dish, allowing everyone in the household to put items away on auto-pilot, preventing a chaotic jumble. This simple yet effective organizational strategy ensures that our kitchen remains tidy and functional, even during the busiest of times, making it a top-tier kitchen cabinet organization hack.

Moving to the right of the microwave, the other stack of deep drawer bases provides versatile storage for a diverse array of kitchen essentials. The top drawer is dedicated to all our lunch-making necessities: bags, reusable containers, napkins, and foil are neatly stored together for grab-and-go convenience. Below that, larger bowls and platters, frequently used for entertaining guests, find their home. And the bottom-most drawer? Well, that’s the exclusive residence of my colossal griddle. It lives there in solitary splendor, like a true boss, ready for pancake duty whenever called upon. This intelligent use of drawer space ensures every item has a dedicated spot, contributing to overall kitchen efficiency.

The Stove Zone: Maximizing Efficiency Around the Cooktop

Our appreciation for the utility of drawer bases extends seamlessly into the stove zone, where we strategically flanked the cooktop with two additional sets of deep drawer base cabinets. This design recommendation came from a trusted kitchen designer friend, and while we initially harbored a slight nervousness about relying solely on drawers for our extensive collection of pots and pans, the results have been phenomenal. This approach not only provides ample storage but also significantly improves access to frequently used cookware, making it a cornerstone of our functional kitchen design.

…and we couldn’t be happier with how perfectly everything fits! Our entire existing set of saucepans and pots nestles comfortably into the bottom drawer on one side of the stove. Even better, their corresponding lids are stored right alongside them; we simply flip them upside down so the handles tuck neatly into each pot, preventing them from sticking up and causing clutter. For the top drawer on that same side, we successfully decluttered our countertops by bidding farewell to our old, bulky knife block. In its place, we now utilize a specialized knife holder designed to fit securely inside a drawer, keeping our knives sharp, safe, and out of sight. A few more bamboo boxes corral all the smaller, often-used kitchen gadgets, such as our can opener and trusty lemon juicer. This intelligent kitchen cabinet organization ensures that everything we need for cooking is always within easy reach.

On the opposite side of the stove, the top drawer has been meticulously organized to serve as our dedicated spice haven. We invested in two of these ingenious angled spice organizers designed specifically for drawers, and they have proven to be a game-changer. These drawer inserts work immeasurably better than the tiered shelf system we previously used in an upper cabinet. Now, every spice jar is clearly visible, making it faster and infinitely easier to locate and grab exactly what we need. The days of jars toppling out or struggling to reach something hidden in the back are happily behind us, thanks to this superior kitchen organization solution.

As you observed in our video tour, the remaining drawers in this zone are intelligently utilized for a variety of bakeware and cooking essentials. Here, we store skillets, mixing bowls, baking sheets, and cupcake tins – essentially all the items frequently used in or near the oven and stove. It’s a highly efficient system, though we’ve noted a potential consideration: if our passion for baking were to grow exponentially, and with it, our collection of baking sheets and cake pans, these stacked drawers might become a bit frustrating. However, we’ve already thought ahead! Should we ever expand our bakeware arsenal, we have the option to install vertical dividers and relocate these items to the spacious cabinet beneath the window, which currently remains mostly empty. This foresight ensures our kitchen storage remains adaptable to our evolving culinary needs.

The upper cabinet positioned directly above the spice drawer is perfectly situated to house our collection of cooking oils, vinegars, and honey, along with glass containers for storing leftovers. Having these items right near the stove is incredibly convenient for both cooking and plating, making meal preparation and subsequent cleanup more efficient. This thoughtful placement reduces unnecessary movement and keeps essential ingredients within arm’s reach, further enhancing the functionality of our stove zone.

On the opposite side of the stove, the corresponding upper cabinet serves as our mini “beverage center.” This dedicated spot is primarily for Sherry to keep her favorite mugs and an assortment of teabags close to the kettle. It’s a simple but effective organizational choice that streamlines her morning routine and ensures her hot beverage essentials are always within easy reach, without cluttering the main cooking zones. This small touch enhances the overall comfort and efficiency of our kitchen.

The Pantry Zone: Centralizing Food Storage for Maximum Access

We affectionately refer to all the cabinets thoughtfully integrated around our refrigerator as our “pantry zone.” You might recall that our old kitchen boasted a generous closet-style pantry conveniently located right next to the door. While it was the largest pantry we’d ever had, the new hidden mudroom proved to be a far more functional and necessary addition in that exact spot. This presented a new challenge: maximizing cabinet-style pantry storage within our new kitchen layout. We made it our mission to create an incredibly efficient and accessible food storage system, proving that a dedicated closet isn’t the only path to a well-organized pantry.

kitchen-remodel-ballard-design-runner-450

The tall cabinet positioned immediately to the left of the refrigerator truly functions as our main “pantry” cabinet. It’s equipped with deep, roll-out shelves that effortlessly house the majority of our dry goods. The depth of these shelves is impressive, matching that of the fridge itself, providing an enormous amount of storage capacity. The crucial pull-out function is a game-changer, preventing items from getting lost or forgotten in the back, ensuring everything is always visible and accessible. Sherry, with her keen eye for organization, couldn’t resist adding some practical plastic baskets to further corral and categorize various items, maintaining perfect order. And I, of course, couldn’t resist creating a dynamic GIF to perfectly illustrate this pull-out pantry in action, highlighting its seamless functionality and robust design.

kitchen-remodel-final-pantry

Above this primary pantry cabinet, a dedicated shelf provides a home for lesser-used items, such as seasonal cookie cutters, various baking decorations, and convenient Starbucks coffee packets for guests. Meanwhile, the deep cabinet situated directly above the refrigerator is the ideal spot for storing our smaller coolers and an assortment of travel mugs. However, the true star of our pantry zone, the feature I’m most excited to unveil, is our ingenious **SECRET APPLIANCE GARAGE** located on the opposite side of the refrigerator. This innovative solution embodies clever kitchen storage, keeping clutter off the counters while maintaining easy access to everyday appliances.

kitchen-remodel-appliance-garage-450

This appliance garage was a custom feature we meticulously designed and worked with our cabinet company to bring to life. It ingeniously leverages an existing electrical outlet, allowing us to keep our frequently used small appliances perpetually ready for action. By installing it at a comfortable, low height – essentially a cabinet that sits directly on the countertop – everything is effortlessly within reach and easy to use. The genius lies in its ability to completely conceal these appliances when not in use; simply close the doors, and the room instantly appears clutter-free. While we don’t leave them permanently plugged in, the morning routine becomes incredibly efficient: just throw open the doors, and our smoothie maker and bagel toaster are immediately at the ready. We incorporated a high shelf within the garage, providing ample vertical space to comfortably maneuver our hands while operating the appliances, while also creating a convenient platform for storing bread, rolls, and dry smoothie ingredients. This solution epitomizes smart kitchen organization, combining accessibility with a pristine aesthetic.

Oh, and directly above the highly functional appliance garage, you’ll find our “overflow” pantry. This space is dedicated to bulkier snack items like chips and popcorn, along with extra rolls of paper towels. Exciting, I know! Sherry spryly demonstrates her method for accessing these upper reaches in the video, showcasing her nimble approach to reaching those top shelves. It’s a practical solution for storing items that don’t fit into the main pantry, ensuring everything has its designated place, even if it requires a bit of a stretch.

The Mudroom: A Hidden Haven for Everyday Essentials

We’ve extensively discussed the strategic rationale behind our kitchen’s innovative room layout and the transformative impact of incorporating a hidden mudroom in our dedicated layout post. Therefore, we won’t rehash every detail here. However, it’s undeniably crucial to reiterate that this mudroom stands as a monumental factor in why our kitchen space now feels infinitely more functional and organized than ever before. This discreet yet powerful addition has fundamentally reshaped the flow and utility of our home’s entry point, addressing everyday clutter with elegant efficiency.

kitchen-remodel-final-mudroom-open

Having this specially designed, dedicated spot right next to the entrance door has dramatically improved the manageability of our everyday items. Our entire coat, shoe, purse, leash, backpack, keys, and hoodie situation, which once threatened to devolve into chaos, is now perfectly streamlined. The brilliant aspect of this mudroom storage solution is that each family member has their own designated section. This eliminates the frustrating act of digging for your bag behind someone else’s jacket or searching for misplaced keys. Furthermore, we thoughtfully incorporated electrical outlets into each cabinet, creating convenient charging stations for our devices. This small but impactful detail ensures that phones, tablets, and other electronics are charged and ready to go, without adding to countertop clutter. It’s truly a testament to the power of well-planned mudroom organization.

The Buffet: Sherry’s “Decor Store”

The other set of cabinets adorning this wall has earned the affectionate moniker “the buffet.” While it’s neither a freestanding piece of furniture nor utilized in the traditional sense of a buffet, the term simply stuck during our planning phase. Its true purpose, however, is far more unique and perfectly tailored to our needs. It serves as Sherry’s very own “Decor Store,” a meticulously organized repository for all her spare decorative accents. This includes essential items like candles, planters, vases, and even her charming collection of ceramic pigs – truly important stuff, as you can imagine!

These cherished decorative items previously resided in the deeper cabinets under our old living room built-ins, where things often got lost in the vast, dark recesses. The shallower design of these new buffet cabinets means that items don’t disappear into the back as easily, ensuring everything is visible and accessible. Furthermore, this relocation freed up space in our new living room built-ins, which now logically house books both on and under their shelves, along with neatly organized photo albums. This thoughtful re-allocation of storage has created a more cohesive and functional display in the living room, while giving Sherry’s decor collection a bright, accessible home.

Miscellaneous: The Essential Odds and Ends

Beyond our primary zones, there are a few other essential storage areas to cover. This includes some random cabinets tucked away in the corner near the pantry (which, excitingly, are mostly empty for future expansion!), the indispensable space under the sink (home to all our cleaning supplies), and everything located to the right of the sink. So, let’s shift our focus to these crucial miscellaneous spots. Speaking of sinks and cleaning, don’t forget to learn how to clean a stainless steel sink the easy way – a little cleaning hack to keep your kitchen sparkling!

kitchen-remodel-final-living-room-door-450

The trio of lower cabinets situated to the right of the sink provides versatile storage for a variety of household items. Immediately adjacent to the sink, the top drawer neatly organizes our dish towels, keeping them within easy reach for quick clean-ups. Below that, we’ve integrated convenient roll-out trash and recycling bins. This pull-out waste system is a significant upgrade; we previously installed a similar setup in our showhouse, which inspired us to retrofit our old cabinets using a store-bought kit. However, our old cabinets lacked the space for recycling behind the trash, making this new, integrated solution a truly welcome improvement. This thoughtful kitchen organization ensures waste management is discreet and efficient, a key component of a functional kitchen.

kitchen-remodel-final-john-at-trash

The cabinet to the immediate right of the trash and recycling bins, as you might have seen in the video, is dedicated to housing our essential tools. Yes, we embrace our unique quirk of keeping a kitchen cabinet devoted to drills, hammers, and screwdrivers – it’s surprisingly convenient for quick household fixes! Further to the right, the nice wide cabinet is brimming with an assortment of random party supplies, which previously resided in our wet bar. This new arrangement keeps them accessible yet neatly tucked away. But perhaps the most iconic drawer on this side, truly embodying the definition of “miscellaneous,” is our magnificent **mega junk drawer**. This organized chaos is a testament to everyday functionality.

kitchen-cabinet-organization-junk-drawer

Sherry, with her unparalleled organizational prowess, skillfully utilized an assortment of those versatile wood dividers and various storage boxes to meticulously wrangle everything within our mega junk drawer. This highly organized space now neatly contains items ranging from tape and pens to stamps and floral wire. In a stroke of genius, she even employed Velcro Command Strips to secure these organizers to the bottom of the drawer, preventing any shifting or sliding when the drawer is opened and closed. This attention to detail ensures that even our most “miscellaneous” items remain perfectly in place. Have I mentioned lately just how much I love her for her brilliant organizational skills?

I believe that comprehensively covers every nook and cranny of our thoughtfully organized kitchen. Once again, feel free to scroll back up and watch the video for a dynamic, in-action tour of all these solutions. We’re fully aware that as our children grow and our ever-evolving relationship with baking (sometimes contentious, sometimes passionate) develops, things will undoubtedly continue to shift and adapt. But for now, it’s undeniably safe to say that I have never, in my entire life, felt this profoundly organized. Our new kitchen isn’t just beautiful; it’s a testament to the power of functional design and smart storage solutions, bringing a sense of calm and efficiency to our daily lives.
