Transitional Teen Haven: Daybed Versatility and Upcycled Charm

Welcome to a new chapter in our home decor journey! We’re thrilled to share the latest progress on Clara’s “big girl room” – a space that’s evolving from a playroom into her dedicated sanctuary. The most exciting recent addition? A fantastic secondhand dresser, complete with charming dovetailed joints, that perfectly meets our needs and vision for the room. This piece isn’t just furniture; it’s a testament to patience, smart shopping, and the joy of creating a functional yet beautiful environment for our growing family.

Clara’s Big Girl Room Transformation: Unveiling Our Craigslist Gem

The quest for the ideal dresser was a significant milestone in our design process. We envisioned a versatile piece that would serve Clara well as she grows, offering ample storage and a touch of timeless charm. This new dresser is destined for her playroom/big girl room, a strategic move that allows us to transition Clara’s original nursery dresser into the nursery for an eventual second child. This approach helps us avoid the common pitfall of endlessly redoing rooms, creating a more sustainable and less disruptive decorating cycle. Plus, the addition of nine spacious drawers is an absolute game-changer for organization, especially in a space that previously served as a clutter catch-all. Imagine the possibilities for clothes, toys, books, and everything a child needs – neatly tucked away!

The Thrill of the Hunt: Scoring a $50 Dresser on Craigslist

Finding this gem was a true triumph of perseverance and strategic searching. Our secret weapon? The ever-reliable, sometimes quirky, Craigslist. For a mere $50, we became the proud owners of this nine-drawer beauty. Our search strategy was simple yet effective: we consistently scoured Craigslist in our local area, searching for “dresser” a few times a week for about a month. It required patience, a keen eye, and a bit of luck, but eventually, this stunning piece popped up, perfectly aligning with our specific criteria. This experience underscores the incredible value that can be found in the secondhand market, offering unique, well-built items at a fraction of retail price, perfect for budget-conscious home renovators.

Our Non-Negotiable Requirements for a Child’s Dresser

When searching for furniture for a child’s room, certain requirements become paramount. For us, a non-smoking household was a top priority. The lingering scent of smoke is notoriously difficult to remove from wooden furniture and is simply not something we wanted in Clara’s space. We also sought a dresser with at least six drawers, mirroring the success we’d had with Clara’s nursery dresser, which provided ample storage for all her essentials. This particular find exceeded expectations with a bonus of nine drawers! Crucially, we looked for a long, horizontal dresser rather than a tall, vertical one. Our reasoning was practical: as Clara grows, a shallower, longer dresser will allow her easier access to all the drawers, empowering her to choose her own clothes and get dressed independently without struggling to reach higher compartments. This thoughtful consideration ensures the furniture grows with her, promoting self-sufficiency and comfort.

Strategic Furniture Placement: Finding the Perfect Spot

Once the dresser was home, the next step involved experimenting with its placement within the room. We tried various configurations with both the dresser and the daybed, testing different walls to optimize flow and functionality. Ultimately, we found the ideal spot for the dresser to be immediately to the left of the door as you enter the room. This placement works beautifully because the dresser is significantly shallower than the daybed, which has a more substantial footprint. By placing the daybed on the back wall, it anchors the room without protruding excessively, creating a balanced and harmonious layout with the dresser positioned thoughtfully across from it. This careful consideration of dimensions and sightlines is key to creating a comfortable and visually appealing space, especially in a child’s room where play area is crucial.

The Journey Ahead: Refinishing or Painting Our Treasure?

It’s important to be transparent: our fantastic secondhand dresser, while structurally sound and charming, isn’t in pristine condition. It bears the marks of its previous life, adding to its character but also presenting us with a design decision. Rather than rushing into a permanent finish, we’re adopting our “sticking & moving” strategy. This involves placing the dresser in its intended spot and gradually introducing other elements to the room – a cozy rug, elegant window treatments, captivating art, and a stylish new light fixture. We believe that as the room evolves around it, the perfect finish for the dresser will become clear. Will we restore its natural beauty with a deep wood tone, infuse the room with drama using a moody navy, or brighten the space with a crisp, snowy white? The possibilities are exciting, and we’re committed to letting the room guide our choice. This patient approach ensures a cohesive and deeply personal aesthetic, reflecting the room’s overall mood rather than a hasty, isolated decision. We promise to keep you updated on its transformation!

Adding Character: The Moose Lamp and a Clever DIY Lampshade

Now, you might be wondering, where does a moose fit into all of this? This charming detail ties back to a beloved estate sale find we previously shared – a ceramic animal that we lovingly transformed with a coat of crisp white paint. And voilà, that’s our moose! This unique, upcycled piece not only adds a touch of whimsical personality to Clara’s room but also highlights our philosophy of repurposing and giving new life to forgotten treasures. It’s a reminder that truly personal decor often comes from unexpected places and a little bit of creative vision.

We’re finally able to share a shot of our moose with his finished lampshade! This fabric-covered shade was a special project, initially created for a book, which meant we couldn’t reveal it until after its publication. Now that it’s out, we’re thrilled to showcase this simple yet impactful DIY. We utilized leftover fabric from Clara’s monthly picture project, giving a second life to materials we already had on hand. In a creative twist, we actually used the reverse side of the fabric. This little design hack allowed us to achieve a subtly muted tone, creating a softer, more understated look that perfectly complements the room’s evolving palette without overwhelming it. It’s a testament to how small details and thoughtful choices can make a significant difference in a room’s overall feel.

Crafting a Cohesive Look: Daybed, Art, and Future Colors

With the dresser and moose lamp in place, one wall of Clara’s room is truly starting to take shape, radiating potential and personality. We can hardly wait to hang something truly special above the dresser. Here’s a hint: it won’t be traditional framed art or typical prints. We’re envisioning something unique, reflecting Clara’s playful spirit and the room’s evolving narrative. We’ll be sure to share pictures as soon as this exciting new element is installed! Our goal is to tackle this project soon, hopefully after we return from our West Coast trip and conquer our giant to-do list.

You’ve already caught a glimpse of the daybed on the other side of the room, but for a closer look at how all the elements interact, we wanted to share this additional picture. Notice how the upholstered lampshade’s texture and subtle color beautifully complement the pillows and blanket on the daybed, creating a harmonious and inviting corner. The room is already feeling quite happy and full of potential! We’re particularly excited to introduce more vibrant colors soon, incorporating accents of moody navy, cheerful teal, and sunny yellow. These additions will infuse the space with youthful energy while maintaining a sophisticated feel, perfectly suited for Clara’s personality and imagination.

In the meantime, who’s the cutest fake sleeper you know? Does her name start with a C and end with a lara?
