Every time I embark on a week-long European adventure with nothing more than a carry-on suitcase and a small personal item, the question invariably arises: “How is that even possible?” While these trips aren’t a monthly occurrence, I’ve undeniably refined a packing methodology that empowers me to travel effortlessly, yet always have an abundance of stylish outfit options that I genuinely enjoy wearing. In fact, I’ve even created a video demonstration to showcase exactly how all my clothes for a full week magically fit into just two packing cubes. Let’s delve into the details of this minimalist yet versatile approach to travel fashion.

For this unforgettable Italian journey, I was joined by three wonderful friends: Elsie and Emma from the beloved blog A Beautiful Mess, and Elise from Elise Joy. (Yes, for those of us who are old-school bloggers, we’re fondly known by our first names paired with our blog identities – a charming relic of internet history, really!) As a quartet of passionate art and food enthusiasts, our primary objective was to immerse ourselves in breathtaking masterpieces at renowned museums and galleries, all while indulging in the culinary delights of two exquisite Italian cities: Florence and Venice. Mission emphatically accomplished! But the full itinerary and gastronomic adventures are a story for another post. For now, let’s get back to the crucial details of what made this light packing feat possible.
Setting the Stage: Decoding Italian Style for Your Suitcase
Our travel planning began nearly a year ago, meticulously orchestrated by a fantastic travel agent. Her pre-trip “Italy: Know Before You Go” packet included a rather intriguing directive: our wardrobe should ideally consist of “smart neutrals.” This felt much like deciphering a dress code for a themed party, say “seventies formal” – it required some careful interpretation. My immediate thought was, what exactly does “smart neutrals” entail?
After a quick but thorough internet search, the consensus was clear: Italians tend to dress with a touch more refinement. This isn’t to say formal gowns and suits are a daily necessity, but I observed a distinct absence of casual items like jean shorts or short denim skirts. Given that mornings in Italy during our travel period could be quite chilly, having my legs covered with trousers or longer skirts was a practical and comfortable choice anyway.
The prevailing style leaned towards dressier jeans, well-tailored jackets, and layers that allowed for comfortable adaptation to changing temperatures. Footwear was practical and comfortable for extensive walking, yet still chic – definitely not “ratty looking.” In my mind, I started referring to this aesthetic as “Banana Republic outfits.” You know that refined yet accessible style they offer – dressier jeans suitable for a corporate-casual environment, smart jackets, and elegant tanks or tops? That precisely captured the mood board I envisioned for “smart neutrals.” And, of course, for those who know me well, leopard print undeniably qualifies as a neutral in my book!

Perhaps as a testament to this successful wardrobe strategy (and for a bit of modern “rizz,” as the kids say), I must mention there were at least a few instances where locals mistook me for an Italian, approaching me and speaking entirely in their native tongue. So, I don’t believe I completely failed the Italian wardrobe test. (Fantastico!) With that vote of confidence, let’s move on to the actual items that made it into my carry-on and how I styled them throughout the trip.
The Carry-On Capsule: An Itemized List for a Week in Italy
Note: Many links in this post lead to similar items because I prioritize wearing clothes for many years, meaning many of my exact pieces are no longer available. This highlights the timeless appeal and versatility I seek in my travel wardrobe.
- 1. Leopard Print Coat (a chic, yet neutral outer layer)
- 2. Tweed Blazer (adds structure and warmth, a true “smart neutral”)
- 3. Leopard Print Sweater (a comfortable, statement-making neutral)
- 4. Red Tank Top, Black Tank Top & Tan Tank Top (essential layering pieces for varying temperatures)
- 5. Black Sweater (a classic, versatile staple)
- 6. Blue Sleeveless Top (a pop of color for mixing and matching)
- 7. Floral Mesh Top (adds texture and visual interest as a layering piece)

- 8. Denim Wide-Leg Jeans (comfortable and chic for walking and sightseeing)
- 9. Brown Wide-Leg Jeans (another versatile neutral bottom)
- 10. Wine Maxi Skirt (elegant, comfortable, and takes up minimal space)
- 11. Leopard Print Maxi Skirt (a bold neutral for variety)
- 12. Small Gold Hoop Earrings (subtle yet stylish)
- 13. Large Gold Hoop Earrings (for a more pronounced statement)
- 14. Green Sunglasses (a fun, unexpected accessory)
- 15. Black Leather Boots (comfortable and versatile for city exploration)
- 16. Brown Suede Zip Boots (another comfortable, interchangeable option)
- 17. Small Sling Bag (ideal for daily essentials)
- 18. Crescent Sling Bag (a slightly larger option for more items)
What I absolutely adored about this selection was the incredible flexibility it offered. Having a couple of options within each category was key. Depending on the day’s itinerary, the weather, or simply my mood, I could effortlessly choose between my thicker tweed blazer or my lighter leopard print jacket. For footwear, I could switch between my extra-comfortable rubber-sole boots or my more classic low-heeled black leather boots. Bottoms could be either a pair of jeans or a long, flowing silk skirt, each offering a different look and feel. And for my personal items, I had the choice of my larger crescent bag for carrying more essentials or my smaller crossbody sling bag for lighter excursions. This array of choices meant I never felt limited or bored with my outfits.
The Magic of Packing Light: A Visual Guide
A video truly speaks volumes, perhaps even more than a thousand pictures. My husband, John, gamely stood on a chair to capture an overhead view as I demonstrated my packing prowess, showing precisely how I managed to fit all these clothes into just two packing cubes. In the video, I reveal my tried-and-true techniques for maximizing every square inch of luggage space, including a beloved “sock trick” and a clear demonstration of how I roll my skirts to achieve ultimate compactness. Please forgive my brief “brain fart” moment when I mistakenly refer to packing brown jeans while wearing the blue ones on the plane (it happens!). Nevertheless, the video makes it abundantly clear how everything fits, with remarkable room to spare!

Effortless Ensemble Creation: My Daily Outfit Strategy
Considering I wore one set of boots, a pair of jeans, a black tank, and a jacket on the plane, and knowing how incredibly minimal space silk skirts and tank tops occupy when rolled (they literally take up no space!), I actually had ample room left in my carry-on suitcase! This extra space proved invaluable, as I was able to purchase a beautiful new purse and several charming souvenirs for the kids and John during my travels.
Remarkably, all my clothing items fit into just two of the largest packing cubes from this specific set! Only two! Beyond my clothes, my suitcase also comfortably accommodated a toiletry bag. My personal item, a spacious weekender bag, carried my adapters and chargers, but we’ll get to those travel essentials in a moment.
Returning to the clothing items, you can see the thoughtful outfit combinations I assembled for each day of the trip. The last three days’ outfits, unfortunately, had to be recreated at home for the photo collage, as my “pasta brain” (am I right?) progressively deteriorated my memory for daily outfit photos. Nevertheless, the consistency and versatility shine through.
Conquering the Climate: Smart Packing for Variable Weather
Our mid-October visit to Italy meant navigating fluctuating temperatures. Mornings often started with a crisp chill, gradually transitioning into gloriously sunny midday highs of around 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is precisely why layering became my ultimate secret weapon. Strategic layering ensured I was perfectly comfortable from the first chilly coffee to the warm afternoon strolls.

As you can observe in the image above, a vibrant red tank top transformed a simple outfit into something more playful and fun. The beauty of this ensemble was its adaptability: effortlessly adding or removing a jacket or sweater allowed me to adjust to the temperature variations throughout the day. By midday, it often felt downright warm!
This explains why, in the photo below, I’m comfortably sporting just a tan tank top while getting another tiny tattoo – a tradition Elsie and I started in France, and Emma happily joined us for this time! The tattoo studio conveniently had a coat rack for everyone’s jackets, illustrating how easily our layers could be shed when temperatures rose. Truly, layers are the unsung heroes of European travel.

Examining the compiled graphic of my daily outfits, it’s evident that on five out of seven days, a jacket (like this leopard print one or this tweed blazer) was layered over a tank or a tee. This allowed for seamless removal as the day warmed. On the remaining two days, I opted for thin sweaters (such as this leopard sweater and this black sweater), simply rolling up the sleeves as needed, which proved ideal for the mild fall climate.
Infusing Personality: Packing for Personal Style
While my core strategy revolved around “smart neutrals,” I also ensured my suitcase contained a few pieces with a bit more visual intrigue. Items like a vibrant red tank top, a sophisticated blue sleeveless top, a delicate floral mesh shirt, and a striking leopard print skirt, alongside the coordinating leopard jacket, served to elevate my more subdued neutral pieces. From a distance, my collection of outfits might appear monochromatic, but upon closer inspection, many items revealed subtle textures and patterns. For example, my tweed blazer boasts beautiful streaks of brown, black, and even a hint of bright blue, complemented by maroon tones – essentially incorporating every color found in my entire packed wardrobe.

Conversely, while I leaned into more interesting accent pieces for my clothing, I consciously opted for “basic” and classic choices when it came to my bags (like this small sling bag and this crescent bag) and shoes (featuring my exact black boots and my exact brown ones). Selecting classic, unobtrusive styles for these two categories ensured they were largely interchangeable with any outfit. This simple decision streamlined my daily dressing, making it incredibly effortless.
And for that delightful dash of the unexpected (applied in a wonderfully low-stakes manner that consumed virtually no packing space), I tucked in a pair of green sunglasses (these are quite similar). Their tone was neutral enough to complement everything else in my suitcase, proving that sometimes, choosing one accessory that doesn’t explicitly match anything else can add a whimsical or surprising touch. (*She whispered, “Live a little,” as she carefully placed her green glasses into her purse.*)

A great tip to test the versatility of such an unexpected item is to lay it out with all your planned outfits during packing. You’ll quickly see if it harmonizes or clashes. I was pleasantly surprised to find my green glasses blended perfectly, earning them a coveted spot in my bag.
I also included two distinct pairs of gold earrings: the smaller chunky gold hoops seen above, and the larger gold hoops featured below. This gave me a few more options to subtly shift my look from day to day.

These earrings were neatly organized in small pouches (I highly recommend using these jewelry pouches for keeping everything tidy and untangled) within my toiletry bag. For travel days and other times, I simply wore my default everyday earrings. The slightly blurry, cropped photo below gives you a glimpse of my usual earring arrangement when I don’t swap out the first hole for something more attention-grabbing.

Prioritizing Comfort: Essential for European Exploration
Comfort serves as the cornerstone of every packing decision I make, especially for a trip involving extensive walking. Both of my boot options were exceptionally comfortable to wear. The pointy-toe black boots feature an incredibly low heel, almost imperceptible when worn, providing the elegance of a boot without sacrificing comfort. Meanwhile, my brown zip boots are squishy platforms with superb rubber soles that genuinely feel akin to wearing sneakers. This duality ensured my feet were always happy, regardless of the day’s activities.
You can grasp the essence of my footwear strategy from the grid of photos provided below. Almost every day, I alternated between my two pairs of boots. This simple practice allowed my feet a refreshing change, preventing the fatigue that comes from pounding the pavement in the same pair day after day, a crucial consideration for walking-intensive travel.

Every trip I’ve taken to Europe inevitably involves a considerable amount of walking, making “peak comfy” footwear an absolute non-negotiable. It’s not the time to break in new shoes bought specifically for the trip – resist that strong urge to buy new things for vacation! Instead, opt for clothing items if you must splurge, but stick with tried-and-true shoes that you know your feet love and have comfortably walked many miles in. For this trip, we averaged about 8 miles a day, and even surpassed 10 miles on one particularly ambitious day! My chosen boots handled it all with grace.
Knowing our itinerary included an extra-long walking event (a quest for good thrifting!), I strategically paired my platform boots with a silk skirt. The platform boots, truly feeling like sneakers, provided incredible support, while a silk skirt is wonderfully breezy and comfortable, despite its tailored and elegant appearance. I felt fantastic all day long.

There’s a certain effortless brilliance in repeating a similar outfit formula during the week, simply by swapping out the skirt and top. This approach maintains the same level of comfort and ease (and often the exact same beloved boots!), while still presenting a fresh look. Moreover, the incredible compactness of silk skirts cannot be overstated – they roll up to be SO SMALL in a suitcase. You’d likely need to pack five of them to occupy the same space as just one pair of jeans, making them a true packing hero.

Beyond “More Options”: The Pitfalls of Random Packing
It seems logical that the ideal outcome of packing is to arrive at your destination with numerous comfortable options that you genuinely love wearing and feel fantastic in. “Options” appears to be the golden word, right? People often fret about forgetting something or not having “enough options.” And in the fervent pursuit of “HAVING MORE OPTIONS!!!!,” the urge to pack a vast assortment of unrelated items can be incredibly powerful, fueled by the misconception that this directly translates to greater choice. Why not bring a collection of unique, showstopping stand-alone pieces?
For example, one might impulsively toss in a pair of gray snakeskin boots, a bold black and white patterned dress, a cream purse, and a brown purse. This approach yields a diverse array of colors and patterns, seemingly implying many distinct items. I absolutely understand the instinct behind this, but it often leads to a more complicated (and surprisingly, fewer actual) outfit combinations because certain pairings simply don’t work together at all.
Imagine the frustration: “Crap, my gray snakeskin boots would look much better with a black bag, but I only packed a cream and a brown one.” Or perhaps you crave wearing your striking patterned dress with simple black boots, not the snakeskin ones. This scenario illustrates how each item can become isolated, only pairing with very specific other pieces. This “seven stand-alone outfits” mentality is precisely why fitting a week’s worth of clothes into a carry-on becomes impossible, as you’re not reusing a single bag, shoe, jacket, or pair of jeans. The true secret to light packing lies in strategic layering, mixing, and matching.
Conversely, choosing shoes and bags in complementary colors makes getting dressed delightfully brainless, as they effortlessly go together every time. These foundational items are what truly tie your other clothing pieces into cohesive ensembles. You won’t find yourself with a beautiful cream purse that constantly sits unworn because you feel it doesn’t quite harmonize with the rest of your packed wardrobe.

In my case, I packed brown boots and black boots, alongside two black purses (this crescent bag and a similar smaller sling bag). My reasoning was simple: almost every item of clothing I brought harmonized with both brown and black. Many even contained both black and brown tones within the same piece – the leopard jacket, skirt, and sweater all seamlessly blend these colors, as does the tweed blazer! This intentional choice ensured that either pair of boots or either bag would effortlessly complement virtually everything else in my carry-on.
The Power of “Harmonic Packing”: Maximizing Versatility
Instead of pursuing a chaotic “variety of options” that feel disjointed in terms of color, print, and style, my philosophy centers on “harmonic packing.” I choose items that can literally be paired with ANYTHING ELSE in my suitcase. This means my skirts and jeans can be effortlessly combined with nearly any of the tops I packed, creating a delightfully simple and flexible system. This, to me, is THE MOST FLEXIBLE approach to travel fashion.
To put it mathematically, with just 4 tops and 4 different bottoms, I instantly unlock 16 distinct outfit pairings within my carry-on! If we then factor in the possibility of layering 2 different jackets over each of those combinations, the potential looks skyrocket to 32! Of course, you might argue, “You wouldn’t wear the leopard jacket with the leopard skirt, or the leopard skirt with the floral shirt,” and you’d be right. But almost every other conceivable combination is something I possess and would confidently wear!
This translates to approximately 30 viable outfit options from a minimal selection of items in my suitcase (and if we really get carried away, it’s 60 if we count the 2 shoe options, and a staggering 120 if we include the 2 purses – but let’s not go completely overboard). This incredible versatility is a direct result of embracing harmony and selecting pieces that are designed to mix and match seamlessly, rather than striving for “so many different styles, colors, and pattern options!”
Can some individuals pack a carry-on with a vibrant array of colors and patterns, execute it flawlessly, and emerge with a plethora of cool, layered, fashion-forward outfits? Absolutely. Many incredibly stylish people achieve this with ease. However, I personally lack the mental bandwidth for such a complex sartorial endeavor, and I adore this method because it feels effortless and easy. It frees me from overthinking outfits, allowing me to fully concentrate on the truly important things during my travels. Like finding the next delicious plate of pasta.
Beyond Clothing: Essential Packing & Travel Must-Haves
As I mentioned, my carry-on suitcase (and my personal item, a weekender bag) held more than just clothes and shoes. Here are some of my absolute favorite travel essentials that streamline every aspect of the journey and keep me feeling remarkably efficient:

- Hard Shell Carry-On Suitcase (we absolutely love its durability and smooth maneuverability)
- Similar Weekender Bag (always serves as my spacious and practical personal item)
- European Outlet Adapters (non-negotiable for charging devices abroad)
- Portable Charger (a lifesaver for keeping phones powered during long days of photos and navigation)
- Compact Umbrella (better safe than sorry with unpredictable fall weather)
- Plane Snacks – Shelled Pistachios & Protein Bars (essential for long flights and avoiding airport food traps)
- Noise-Cancelling Headphones (a must-have for peace and quiet on planes and trains)
- Toiletry Bag (keeps all my essentials organized and leak-proof)
- Packing Cubes (the ultimate game-changer for organization and space-saving)
- Jewelry Pouches (prevents tangles and keeps small items secure)
- Sleep Mask (for catching crucial rest on flights)
- Airtag (peace of mind for tracking luggage)
- Pashmina (doubles as a stylish scarf and a cozy plane blanket)
Most of these items are self-explanatory, but I want to highlight the small comforts that make long flights bearable: a soft sleep mask, nourishing snacks, and a versatile pashmina that rolls up compactly but expands into a wonderful plane blanket. Noise-cancelling headphones are, without a doubt, a MUST for me, creating an oasis of calm. I included a compact umbrella just in case of fall rains in Italy, but remarkably, we didn’t experience a single drop – I credit the umbrella’s presence for warding off the rain! All these essentials fit easily into my favorite weekender bag, which consistently serves as my personal item.
We’ve been loyal users of this particular suitcase, these indispensable packing cubes, and this toiletry bag for quite some time, and we wholeheartedly recommend them all. They genuinely simplify the packing process, making me feel incredibly organized and efficient (I truly believe packing cubes allow me to fit significantly more and keep everything in order). And for those smaller items like my two pairs of chunky gold earrings, I swear by these jewelry pouches to keep them secure and tangle-free within my toiletry bag. They’re also fantastic for preventing necklaces from tangling and keeping earring sets together.
Bringing European adaptors is another absolute necessity. Even though I avoid packing electric styling tools like hair dryers or straighteners, I always need them to charge my phone and, crucially, my portable charger. Speaking of which, carrying a portable charger in your purse every day while traveling is incredibly wise. With all the photos and videos I capture, my phone battery depletes much faster than it would at home!
Oh, and I must reiterate the joy of having enough space in my carry-on to bring back souvenirs for the kids and John, in addition to buying myself a beautiful purse in Florence. The leather craftsmanship there is simply breathtaking – allow me to introduce my new purchase!

We serendipitously met a kind local man in a coffee shop, who generously offered several amazing dinner recommendations. After bumping into him multiple times around the city, he eventually revealed he owned a leather store (he was truly like a benevolent grandpa, not a creepy stranger!). His sweetness and helpfulness were so abundant that we felt compelled to visit his shop, and I simply couldn’t resist purchasing that gorgeous bag. And, no surprise here – it perfectly complements everything else in my harmoniously packed suitcase!
