Renovation Revelations: What’s New in Our Duplex Project

Our beach duplex renovation has been a journey of unexpected turns, but we’re thrilled to share the latest progress and surprising discoveries. One particularly memorable (and slightly gross) discovery involved an unwelcome cohabitant: squirrels! As you can observe in the picture above, that brown pile on the left side of the porch roof is unfortunately part of a substantial squirrel nest that had been meticulously constructed within the HVAC system. Unearthing this while clearing the systems highlighted yet another layer of unexpected issues that homeowners often face when dealing with older properties or structures that have been left unattended for some time. Dealing with pest remediation is certainly not glamorous, but it’s an essential step in ensuring a healthy and safe living environment.

The true excitement, however, began with demolition. We’re offering a sneak peek below at the incredible transformation already underway. It was an absolutely wild experience to witness the staircases in this open configuration (one for each side of the duplex), especially since they had been separated by a solid, dividing wall for so many years. While our plan is to restore the dividing wall to maintain the duplex structure, seeing the interior completely opened up, even temporarily, provided an invaluable perspective on the house’s bones and potential. This initial demolition phase also brought to light some truly interesting—and frankly, a bit scary—details about the house’s underlying condition. These findings are currently informing our structural plans and future layout decisions. We’re compiling all these revelations into a comprehensive post that will detail everything we found and our exciting new floor plans.

In today’s digital age, buying home furnishings and decor online has become increasingly common, yet it still comes with its unique set of challenges. We’ve grown considerably more comfortable with this approach, pushing our comfort zones to acquire essential pieces for our beach house. Pictured above is the glass shower pane we confidently ordered online for the beach house’s en-suite bathroom—arguably the boldest online purchase we’ve made lately due to its fragility and precise fit requirements. For those curious about the accompanying decor, the stylish basket was a local World Market in-store find (not available online), and you can find the link to the elegant marble and wood table here. This experience highlights that with careful research, even delicate items can be successfully sourced online.

Another significant online purchase that took us beyond our usual comfort zone was the Haier fridge, destined for the beach house pantry, as shown below. Selecting appliances online requires even more scrutiny, given their functional importance and size. Our positive experience with this purchase further solidified our belief in strategic online shopping.

Below are two photos from the same Wayfair listing for our beach house nightstands. Notice how the image on the left appears to have a more orange undertone, while the one on the right looks almost peach. Such inconsistencies can make purchasing daunting. What gave us the ultimate confidence to buy was seeing these very nightstands featured in another trusted blogger’s bedroom pictures. Real-life photos from actual users or reputable sources often provide the most accurate representation.

To further illustrate this point, here is a photo we captured of that same nightstand in our beach house this past weekend. We tried our best to ensure the lighting and color balance made it look as true to its real-life appearance as possible. In person, we would simply describe it as a consistent, medium wood tone—neither notably orange nor peach. This experience underscores the importance of seeking out diverse visual references beyond standard product photos when making online purchasing decisions for your home.

Our Top Picks & Current Obsessions: What We’re Digging Right Now

We’re always on the lookout for products that genuinely enhance our living spaces and daily lives. Our latest discoveries range from practical home improvement solutions to personal wellness tools and even delightful treats. First up, an ingenious trick for making any bathroom feel more luxurious and spacious: extra-long shower curtains. In the downstairs bathroom at the beach house, which boasts impressive 9-foot ceilings, a standard 6-foot curtain simply wouldn’t do. We specifically hunted down this extra-long 8-foot (96″ x 72″) shower curtain and paired it with an equally long liner. The difference is astounding; it draws the eye upward, making the room feel considerably taller and more elegant. After several months of use, we have absolutely zero complaints, affirming this as a truly transformative design choice.

We applied the same principle to the upstairs hall bath at the beach house, which features standard 8-foot ceilings. While the room itself is notoriously difficult to photograph (apologies for the limited view in the next photo!), the impact of our chosen shower curtain is undeniable. Here, we opted for a 7-foot shower curtain and a corresponding 7-foot curtain liner.
