Crafting Inspiration: DIY Positive Affirmation Wall Art with Cricut & Cereal Boxes

Welcome to the inaugural **Create With Cricut Challenge**! This year, I’m thrilled to join a talented group of bloggers, each tasked with transforming unique materials into inspiring projects. For our very first challenge, the prompt was simple yet wonderfully creative: craft something using an ordinary cereal box. Initially, my mind buzzed with countless cereal box craft ideas, from playful kids’ projects to intricate storage solutions. However, I felt a strong pull towards creating a meaningful piece of home decor – something that could not only beautify our space but also uplift our spirits daily.

The beauty of crafting with Cricut lies in its ability to elevate even the most humble materials into extraordinary creations. This challenge truly pushed my creative boundaries, proving that innovation often starts with what’s readily available around us. My goal was to produce a piece that wasn’t just decorative but resonated deeply with a message our family needed to hear. And what better way to do that than by upcycling an everyday item?

Unlock Creativity: The Surprising Potential of Cereal Box Crafts

Working with cereal boxes has been a revelation, and honestly, I’m amazed I haven’t explored this versatile material sooner! It boasts a thickness comparable to poster board or even light chipboard, offering a sturdy yet flexible base for a myriad of crafting endeavors. But its most significant advantage? It’s absolutely **FREE!** Instead of tossing those empty boxes into the recycling bin, you can transform them into functional and beautiful pieces of art, making it an eco-friendly choice for any crafter.

Beyond being budget-friendly, cereal box cardboard is incredibly accessible. Almost every household has a constant supply, which means you can start a project on a whim without needing a trip to the craft store. It’s also surprisingly easy to cut, paint, and glue, making it suitable for crafters of all skill levels, including kids. Its smooth, often slightly glossy surface on one side makes it ideal for applying paint, vinyl, or decorative papers, offering a clean canvas for your creative vision. The structural integrity it provides is perfect for creating layered effects, adding dimension to your projects, and giving them a more professional, finished look.

Crafting a Positive Environment: My Inspiration Behind This Project

Lately, maintaining a positive atmosphere in our home has been a genuine struggle. I’ve found myself resorting to various tactics, even gentle bribes, to encourage a more optimistic outlook in my children. It’s become clear to me that cultivating a positive attitude isn’t something that just happens; it’s a skill that requires conscious effort, a defined goal, and a deliberate practice of seeking out the good. This realization hit home powerfully while I was listening to an old interview with Mr. Rogers as I folded laundry. He offhandedly remarked, “Attitudes are caught, not taught.” It was as if a lightbulb switched on above my head.

This simple yet profound statement was exactly the reminder I needed, both for myself and for our family. It underscored the importance of modeling the behavior and mindset we wish to see. Our home environment plays a crucial role in this, acting as a constant source of unspoken lessons. This insight solidified my decision: I needed to create a visual anchor, a daily reminder of this powerful truth. I absolutely adore making my own wall decor and art projects because it allows me to personalize them completely. I can infuse them with quotes, colors, and designs that specifically inspire our family, reflect what we’re currently working on, and provide the gentle nudges we need to see every day. This project is incredibly versatile; you can easily adapt it with your own favorite quote, saying, or affirmation, making it uniquely yours.

Essential Supplies for Your Cereal Box Wall Art

Gathering the right tools is the first step to a successful craft project. For this particular Cricut cereal box craft, you’ll need a mix of everyday items and specialized cutting machine accessories. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need to bring your positive affirmation wall art to life:

  • **Empty Cereal Boxes:** The star of our project! Make sure they are clean and dry. You might need a few, depending on the size of your chosen design and if you want to create multiple layers.
  • **Green Paint:** Or any color that complements your home decor and your chosen quote. Acrylic craft paint works perfectly for cardboard.
  • **Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks:** Essential for securely assembling your layered elements. A low-temperature glue gun is often safer for delicate materials and small hands if you’re crafting with kids.
  • **Cricut Machine (Cricut Air or Maker):** Your precision cutting tool. These machines are fantastic for cutting intricate designs from various materials, including cardboard.
  • **Cricut StrongGrip Cutting Mat (12×12 inches):** Crucial for holding the cereal box cardboard firmly in place during cutting. Its extra-strong adhesive ensures the material doesn’t shift, leading to cleaner, more accurate cuts.
  • **Cricut LightGrip Cutting Mat (12×12 inches):** Ideal for cutting lighter materials like paper or vinyl for your background and lettering layers. Its gentler adhesive allows for easy removal without damaging your materials.
  • **Cricut Deep-Point Blade and Housing:** This blade is specifically designed for cutting thicker materials like chipboard, magnet sheets, and, in our case, cereal box cardboard. It ensures a clean, complete cut through the sturdy box material. It’s compatible with both Cricut Explore and Maker machines.
  • **Vinyl (Optional):** For lettering or intricate design elements that you want to apply smoothly.
  • **Paper (Optional):** For additional layered elements, background circles, or intricate designs that you want to glue on.
  • **Leather String or Twine:** For creating a hanger for your finished wall art. Choose a material that complements the aesthetic of your design.
  • **Scissors or Craft Knife:** For opening and flattening your cereal boxes.
  • **Brayer or Scraper Tool (Optional):** Useful for ensuring vinyl adheres smoothly and for pressing material onto your cutting mat.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Inspirational Wall Art

Now that you have all your supplies ready, let’s get started on transforming those cereal boxes into a beautiful and meaningful piece of home decor. Follow these detailed steps to create your personalized positive affirmation sign.

Step 1: Prepare Your Cereal Box Cardboard

  • Carefully cut open your empty cereal box along its seams to flatten it into a single, workable piece of cardboard. Discard any tabs or excess bits.
  • Ensure the cardboard is as flat and smooth as possible. If it has strong creases, gently bend it in the opposite direction or place a heavy book on it for a while.
  • Place the glossy (printed) side of the flattened cereal box cardboard face down onto your StrongGrip cutting mat. This helps the Deep-Point Blade cut through the unprinted, often slightly less slick side more effectively and keeps your blade cleaner.
  • Secure the cardboard firmly to the mat. You can use a brayer to press it down evenly, ensuring there are no air bubbles or loose edges that could interfere with cutting.
  • In Cricut Design Space, select or create an 11-inch circle shape for your main base.
  • Load the Deep-Point Blade into your Cricut machine.
  • Set your material dial or custom setting in Design Space to “Poster Board +” or “Chipboard” for a deeper, more robust cut. This setting typically instructs the Cricut to perform multiple passes, ensuring a clean cut all the way through the cereal box cardboard on the first attempt. Always do a test cut if you’re unsure.
  • Cut the 11-inch circle. Once cut, carefully remove it from the mat.

Step 2: Create Your Background Layer (Optional)

  • If you desire a background layer behind your cardboard circle (perhaps in a solid color or pattern), cut another 11-inch circle from paper or vinyl.
  • Pro Tip: If you are using vinyl for your background, it can be more efficient to apply the vinyl directly to the cereal box cardboard BEFORE cutting the circle. This way, you can cut both the cardboard and the vinyl simultaneously, ensuring perfect alignment and saving a step. Use your StrongGrip mat for this combined cut.

Step 3: Design Your Quote and Decorative Elements

  • Open Cricut Design Space and decide on the inspiring quote or saying you wish to use. The Mr. Rogers quote, “Attitudes are caught, not taught,” is a wonderful example.
  • Choose your fonts. For my project, I used the beautiful Amastery Font Duo (which I sourced from Creative Market) for an elegant touch.
  • Select any decorative elements. I incorporated laurel leaves, which I found within Cricut Design Space (search for “Leafy branch #M25556F” under the “Four Seasons Home Decor” category). These add a lovely organic feel to the design.
  • Plan your layout. Experiment with text placement, sizing, and the arrangement of your decorative elements until you achieve a visually appealing composition.
  • Consider adding dimension: I opted for a multi-layered look, with the main lettering cut from vinyl and adhered directly to the base, while the leafy branches were cut from a separate layer of cereal box cardboard (or paper) and then glued onto the design to create a beautiful 3D effect. This contrast in materials and depth adds significant visual interest.

Step 4: Cut Your Designs

  • Based on your design choices, cut your lettering from vinyl using the LightGrip mat and a standard fine-point blade.
  • For any 3D elements (like the laurel leaves in my project), cut them from additional flattened cereal box cardboard using your StrongGrip mat and the Deep-Point Blade, just as you did for the main circle. Remember to adjust your material settings as needed.
  • Carefully weed your vinyl if you used it for lettering, removing any excess material to reveal your quote.

Step 5: Assemble Your Wall Art

  • If you cut a separate paper or vinyl background circle, adhere it neatly to your main 11-inch cereal box cardboard circle.
  • Carefully transfer your vinyl lettering onto the center of your cardboard circle using transfer tape. Take your time to ensure it’s straight and smooth.
  • Once your lettering is in place, arrange your 3D cut-out elements (like the laurel leaves) around the quote. Experiment with their positioning until you are satisfied with the arrangement.
  • Using your hot glue gun, apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of each 3D element and press it firmly into place on your sign. The hot glue provides a quick and strong bond.
  • Optionally, if you wanted to paint parts of the cardboard elements, do this before gluing them down and allow them to dry completely.

Step 6: Add the Hanger

  • Once all your elements are securely glued and dry, it’s time to add the hanger.
  • Using a small hole punch or the tip of a craft knife, carefully punch two holes near the top edge of your sign, spaced a few inches apart. Ensure the holes are symmetrical.
  • Thread your chosen leather string or twine through the holes from the front to the back, then bring the ends up over the top.
  • Tie the ends together in a secure knot, creating a loop for hanging. Adjust the length of the loop to your preference.
