What’s New at Home (and How We Conquered the Uninvited Guests)

Life as homeowners often throws unexpected curveballs, and sometimes those curveballs come in the form of tiny, eight-legged (or six-legged, or no-legged!) creatures that decide your house is their new five-star resort. Our latest adventure began with the unsettling discovery of a pest issue, an experience that instantly catapulted us into a whirlwind of research, panic, and practical problem-solving. It’s safe to say that the initial shock was immense, leading to a frantic scramble to contain the situation and protect our belongings.

Above, you can see our designated “quarantine” area, set up in our bonus room, after the initial chaos subsided and we had a clearer strategy for dealing with our pest problem. I snapped this photo only *after* we had returned from an impromptu trip out of town, a necessary step to allow the treatment to do its work undisturbed. By this point, the room almost appeared peaceful, a stark contrast to the utter disarray and blind panic that characterized its transformation when everything was hastily thrown in there. We meticulously bagged up countless items, laundered everything washable on high heat, and moved furniture into the center of the room, creating an island of isolation to maximize the effectiveness of our pest control efforts. The process was exhausting, both physically and mentally, but absolutely crucial for a thorough resolution.

This wasn’t my first rodeo with unwelcome houseguests, unfortunately. If you’ve been following us for a while, you might recall my infamous New York City bed bug experience. That ordeal was a true test of endurance and resilience, and I referenced it during our podcast discussion. For those curious (or simply wanting to commiserate), here’s a previous blog post detailing just how utterly awful that situation was. It was a brutal lesson in urban living and the extreme measures one must take to combat a pervasive pest problem. Below are a couple of poignant photos from that challenging time, showcasing my clothes meticulously stored in sealed bags within my closet – a common tactic to prevent further spread – and a glimpse of me in my memorable “sleep uniform.” Yes, in the middle of a scorching New York summer, I resorted to wearing specific attire to guard against those incessant overnight bites. Looking back, it’s clear Sherry married me for my sparkling personality and not my interior design prowess at the time; just check out those sophisticated curtains I fashioned from black flat sheets! Every infestation is a nightmare, but each experience, however unpleasant, arms you with more knowledge and a greater resolve for future home maintenance challenges. Our recent experience, while stressful, benefited immensely from the lessons learned during that past battle.

The Front Door Fiasco: Why Finding the Perfect Entryway is a Renovation Nightmare

Now, let’s pivot from tiny intruders to a much larger, albeit less itchy, source of frustration: the humble front door. People, I’m here to tell you, the current state of front door options on the market is nothing short of bleak. BLEAK, I tell you! It seems like a simple task, right? You need a front door, you go to a store, you pick one out. Oh, how naive we were. Our recent hunt for the perfect front doors for our duplex renovation turned into an unexpectedly arduous journey, filled with bewildering designs and a shocking scarcity of classic, understated elegance.

Above, you can witness actual photographic evidence of Sherry giving the in-stock front doors at a local big box store some serious, well-deserved side eye. Her expression perfectly captures our collective bewilderment and exasperation. Why, in a world brimming with design possibilities, are there so many overly ornate, strangely modern, or downright peculiar options, yet so few that simply feel classic, simple, and timeless? We were searching for something that would complement the traditional charm of our duplex, something that would enhance its curb appeal without screaming for attention. Instead, we were met with a parade of doors featuring bizarre geometric patterns, oddly placed glass inserts, and an abundance of decorative flourishes that felt anything but cohesive or welcoming.

Below, we’ve included just a few examples of some of the *extremely intricate* and often bewildering designs we stumbled upon during our extensive search. Our initial thought was that finding a classic diamond-paned door for the duplex would be “easy enough to just buy.” We envisioned elegant lines, thoughtful proportions, and a sturdy, welcoming presence. Little did we know that locating a door featuring an entire bear family carved into it would prove to be an easier task than finding the simple, tasteful design we coveted! The market seems saturated with options that prioritize novelty over enduring style, making the quest for a truly beautiful and appropriate front door an unexpected renovation nightmare. We visited countless stores, scoured online marketplaces, and even explored salvage yards, all in pursuit of that elusive perfect entryway.

And in case you missed the exciting update on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, we’re thrilled to share the story of how we finally found our dream doors! This is Amy, our amazing friend, and Sherry, proudly standing with one of the doors. Amy, being the incredible person she is, sweetly drove this door all the way from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, right through Richmond, during her journey to a soccer tournament for her daughter. This kind of generosity and community support is truly what makes home renovation projects, despite their challenges, so rewarding. You can also catch another glimpse of Sherry with the door proudly positioned in front of the duplex here on Instagram. It was a long and winding road, but finding these doors felt like discovering a hidden treasure, and we can’t wait to share their full transformation with you as the duplex renovation progresses. It goes to show that sometimes, the perfect pieces require a little more searching, a lot more patience, and often, the help of wonderful friends.
