Work and Welcome Our Transformed Room

Do you hear that joyful exclamation? That’s the sound of pure satisfaction ringing from Richmond! We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that our ambitious office, guest room, and playroom makeover is finally complete. It’s been an incredible journey, transforming this small but mighty space into a hub of productivity, comfort, and fun. Come on in, we can’t wait to give you the grand tour!

But first, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. Remember the ‘before’? This is how the room greeted us when we first moved in, a blank canvas awaiting its transformation:

And now, prepare to be amazed! Feast your eyes on the stunning ‘after’ – a vibrant, highly functional space beautifully designed to serve as a bustling home office, a welcoming guest retreat, and a cheerful playroom for our little one:

Transforming a Compact Space: Our Multi-Functional Room Oasis

This room, though a modest 10 x 10.5 feet, holds a special place in our hearts. It consistently receives the best natural light in the entire house, making it an incredibly inviting and energizing environment. This abundant sunshine was a key factor in our decision to create a space that could seamlessly accommodate over 80 hours a week of blogging, creative playtime, and occasionally host cherished friends or family. Every single project we undertook, every design decision, was meticulously planned to bring this vision to life. And honestly, it wasn’t just worth it – it was a genuinely fun and rewarding process!

Bright and airy office setup with custom desk and seating

Our primary goal was to maximize functionality without compromising on style or comfort. We meticulously squeezed in as much practical utility as possible, from the custom-built shallow DIY desk that John ingeniously crafted, to the playful and interactive magnetic wallflowers positioned perfectly under the window. The room is now brimming with clever storage solutions, including an array of shelves and bookcases, complemented by a versatile storage ottoman that neatly houses all of Clara’s “Claraphernalia” (aka: her beloved toys and essentials). A true game-changer was our budget-friendly yet incredibly comfortable sleeper sofa, which ingeniously conceals a full-sized mattress, liberating significant floor space for our daily activities.

Custom Solutions for Optimal Efficiency and Comfort

The desk, masterfully built by John using our old bathroom door, is a testament to resourceful design. Not only did this innovative approach save us money, but its shallow depth was a critical design choice, ensuring that the sofa bed can effortlessly fold out when guests arrive, without any obstruction. This custom sizing was crucial for maintaining the room’s multi-functional flow. We also carved out ample room for files and paperwork, thanks to a combination of stylish woven baskets adorning the tall bookcase situated by the window, and a compact, charming blue filing cabinet tucked neatly under the desk – another fantastic creation by John.

Cozy reading nook with patterned seat cushions

You’ll also notice the delightful addition of fun, patterned seat cushions that seamlessly tie into the sofa and the broader color palette of the room. These chairs were already part of our furniture collection, having been previously used in our dining area before we opted for a padded bench a while back. The cushions, a fantastic find at World Market for just $12.50 each, not only introduce a vibrant splash of pattern but also significantly enhance the comfort of our already sturdy dining chairs. Having spent countless long hours working from this space, we can confidently say these cushions were a worthwhile investment for our “ol’ backside” comfort!

Organized desk area with a wireless printer and clean wiring

Achieving a streamlined aesthetic was paramount, especially in a compact workspace. We paid close attention to expertly wrangling all our wires, ensuring a clean and uncluttered look. The entire office section of the room functions flawlessly for our daily routines, providing an efficient and inspiring workspace. Moreover, the generous rug area behind the desk offers ample room for playtime with Baby P, allowing one of us to comfortably manage Clara’s activities while the other focuses on blogging – truly a harmonious blend of work and family life.

Thoughtful Details and Personalized Touches

John also had the opportunity to flex his problem-solving muscles with a charming and practical solution. A few days prior, I’d expressed a desire for a neat way to keep paint decks organized and readily accessible, without cluttering my side of the desk. His brilliant suggestion? To hang a delightful $5 ceramic pig hook, sourced from Mongrel here in Richmond, within arm’s reach. This whimsical hook proved to be a perfect solution, not only keeping the paint decks organized but also adding an artistic touch to the wall. This playful theme continues across the room, with two other pig hooks cleverly holding up our flash card clothesline, and a fourth nestled in the closet, displaying Clara’s growth chart. As you know, I have a soft spot for unique ceramic animal accents – and four of them certainly elevate the room’s character!

DIY paint deck swatches on a binder ring

And speaking of paint decks, that’s actually a custom DIY creation! I gathered a collection of my favorite paint swatches, punched a hole in each in the same spot, and threaded them onto a 3-inch binder ring, a budget-friendly find from Office Max. It’s a practical, portable, and personalized tool that truly streamlines my design process.

We’re also thoroughly enjoying our dynamic, homemade postcard shelves. Their design allows us the flexibility to easily rotate postcards and other small, smile-inducing objects whenever the mood strikes, ensuring the art display never becomes boring. In fact, we’ve already swapped out a multitude of items, continuously refreshing the visual interest of the wall. It’s an addictively fun project! A huge thank you once again to everyone who so generously sent postcards and other heartfelt notes for our evolving art wall – your contributions truly make this space unique!

Our postcard collection boasts greetings from across the globe, including England, Holland, Switzerland, Afghanistan, Greece, Spain, Austria, Italy, India, Africa, Australia, Canada, alongside a plethora of intriguing domestic locations. We carefully store all the postcards not currently on display in the convenient top compartment of one of our filing boxes, allowing us to effortlessly refresh the display at a moment’s notice. So, if you don’t spot your card on the wall today, rest assured it might make an appearance very soon!

Organized file box with a compartment for postcards

The other small compartment, located in the top of our second filing box, serves a vital organizational purpose. It neatly houses all our cords and wires in tidy bundles, thanks to some clever use of small blue binder clips from Office Max. This simple hack prevents them from morphing into a chaotic, knotted mess, maintaining the room’s overall sense of order and serenity.

Smart Storage and Guest-Ready Features

Next, we have the Ikea bookcase that we thoughtfully customized. We gave it a soft blue background and carefully sawed at the molding to ensure it would sit perfectly flush against the wall, creating a seamless, built-in look. This bookcase stands as another critical storage piece in the room; its baskets, sourced from Michael’s, are filled with essential paperwork and office accessories that we prefer to keep close at hand, and it also discretely houses our printer. Yet, we consciously adorned its shelves with eye-pleasing accessories and decorative items, ensuring it avoids a “work-heavy” feel, especially when guests come to stay, maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.

We even have a clever “shelf switcheroo” system that we deploy when friends and family members arrive, effortlessly transforming the space for their comfort. Be sure to check this afternoon’s post for all the details on that ingenious setup!

To further enhance efficiency, we repurposed an already-owned white Ikea planter into a functional caddy for mailing tubes used for shop orders. Keeping these tubes close by eliminates the constant trudging back and forth to a cabinet in the kitchen, saving precious time and effort. It’s these small, thoughtful adaptations that truly make a big difference in the daily flow of our multi-functional space.

A Dedicated Play Zone for Little Explorers

And of course, we can’t overlook the charming DIY flash card clothesline we lovingly whipped up for Clara. Safety note: Twine, wire, or ribbon can pose strangulation hazards. It is always advised to hang such items out of reach and to supervise children who may interact with them to prevent injury!

We absolutely adore the versatility of this clothesline. As Clara grows, it can effortlessly transition to display her burgeoning art creations or even a festive strand of colorful paper flags (you can see more inspiring pictures here). Plus, this morning on Babycenter, we shared a step-by-step guide on how we created those adorable patterned clothespins, so be sure to check out that post too (just click here)! Our aim was to create a truly authentic playroom experience, not just toss a few toys on the floor and call it a day. Elements like the flash card clothesline and the engaging magnetic wall (which Clara interacts with using our existing magnetic wallflowers) were instrumental in cultivating that genuine playroom feeling. Furthermore, we’ve integrated countless smart storage spots for her books, toys, blankets, and blocks, ensuring everything has its place. A prime example is this fantastic $27 storage ottoman from Target…

Speaking of the closet, our recent little makeover last week completely revolutionized it! What was once a dark and chaotic mess has been transformed into an incredibly functional space. It now perfectly accommodates linens when the guest bed is not in use, and thoughtfully provides ample storage for clothing and luggage when our cherished friends and family come to stay. Remember, stay tuned for exciting photos of the bed fully folded out and prepared for company in this afternoon’s post.

Organized closet with shelves and guest amenities

Who would have thought we’d end up with two full-sized bookcases in one relatively tiny room? Yet, they both serve their purpose brilliantly. This particular one is ideal for housing all of Clara’s beloved books, an assortment of stuffed animals, various block sets, and other “playroom” essentials. These items are neatly tucked away in generously sized baskets (another great find from Michael’s) when not in use, maintaining a clutter-free environment. And do you spot those two charming patterned boxes on the very top shelf? Keep an eye out for a quick tutorial on that fun little project, coming your way soon!

Functional Decor: The Mirror that Does More

We certainly can’t forget about our ingenious mirror, which doubles as a dynamic to-do list. A full-length mirror is always a thoughtful amenity for guests, allowing them to quickly check their appearance before stepping out. But we extended its functionality for our daily office needs by using a dry-erase marker to jot down our tasks, crossing them off as we go – a simple yet effective productivity hack. When guests arrive, however, all our scribbles vanish, replaced by a sweet, personalized welcome note, adding a truly warm and inviting touch to their stay.

The Grand Reveal: Budget Breakdown and Our Pride

So, that concludes the extensive tour of our office, guest room, and playroom reveal! Now, for the burning question: how much did this extensive transformation truly cost us? Here’s a detailed breakdown of our budget:

  • DIY pendant light: $32
  • Homemade desk: $70
  • File cabinet: $20
  • File boxes & desktop cubby: $42 (from Target)
  • Chairs: already owned (repurposed from our dining area)
  • Chair pads: $12.50 each (from World Market)
  • Postcard shelves: $23
  • Postcards: free (a heartfelt thank you to all our wonderful contributors!)
  • Small bookcase: already owned
  • Large bookcase: $69 (from Ikea)
  • Baskets: $40 (from Michael’s)
  • Mirror: already owned
  • Storage ottoman: $27 (from Target)
  • Full-sized sleeper sofa: $699
  • Pillows: already owned (from West Elm and Crate & Barrel)
  • Rug: already owned (a fantastic find from Pottery Barn Outlet for $129)
  • Wallflowers: already owned (our original magnetic set)
  • Magnetic primer for wallflowers: $21 (from Home Depot)
  • Clothesline: $20 (for decorative paper, ribbon, and flash cards)
  • Pig hooks: $5 each
  • Closet shelf: $12
  • Eco power strip for cord wrangling: $39
  • Wireless printer: $79
  • Mailing tube caddy: already owned (a cleverly repurposed Ikea planter)
  • Total Project Cost: $1,238 ($539 without the sleeper sofa)

We are absolutely beyond thrilled that the entire room makeover, encompassing such extensive changes and additions, came in at just a little over a thousand dollars! For this budget, we were able to successfully integrate a two-person desk, two functional bookcases, a comfortable sleeper sofa, a versatile storage ottoman, a wall of custom-built shelving, a stylish pendant light, a practical file cabinet, a wireless printer, and a multitude of other innovative storage solutions. Initially, we had mentally prepared for a budget closer to $2,000 to $3,000 for this level of new furniture and functionality. This expectation was particularly influenced by our research into sleeper sofas, many of which alone cost upwards of $1,200.

The fact that we spent a mere $539 after accounting for the cost of the sofa fills us with immense pride. To put this into perspective, one could easily spend that amount on just a two-person desk, or simply an ottoman and a bookcase. Yet, we managed to stretch that budget to include an entire slew of furnishings, accessories, and essential electronics, creating a truly remarkable and efficient space. We now enjoy a highly multifunctional sanctuary where we spend countless hours each day, and it flawlessly transitions into a welcoming haven for our friends and family whenever they visit.

Oh, and we’re especially proud that we accomplished approximately 90% of this transformation after Clara joined our family. A huge cheer for naptime projects and the teamwork involved in taking turns with our “beanette” – one parent applying magnetic paint or building a file cabinet, while the other whips up a flash card clothesline. We’re already buzzing with excitement to tackle our next mini-makeover project – did somebody just mention a sunroom? Stay tuned for more!
