Our Memorable Family Christmas: Gifts, Laughter, and Cherished Traditions
As the holiday season draws to a close, it’s time for our annual tradition: a heartfelt recap of the gifts exchanged and the cherished moments spent with loved ones. While the carols echo in our minds and the festive spirit lingers, we always prioritize connection and gratitude over material possessions. For us, the holidays are primarily about fostering deeper bonds with friends and family, appreciating the blessings we have, and creating lasting memories. It’s a fundamental belief in our home that people always come before things.
However, we do enjoy a few meaningful traditions when it comes to gifts. Each year, we love crafting a couple of handmade items for Clara, our little one. You might remember her adorable play fridge and her engaging latchboard from past Christmases – projects filled with love and personal touch. In addition to these, Sherry and I exchange a few “tokens” of our affection, typically aiming for around $100 total spent on a handful of thoughtful items. These small gestures serve as sweet reminders of our appreciation for each other. But before diving into our adult exchange, let’s revisit Clara’s pure joy on Christmas morning, especially her reaction to the custom-built play fridge we made her.

Christmas Morning Magic: Clara’s Delight
If you followed our Instagram stories on Christmas morning, you would have witnessed the sheer delight on Clara’s face. Her excitement was palpable as she discovered what Santa had brought. We moved all her presents into the living room, strategically placed near the twinkling Christmas tree, to enhance the magic of the moment. Amidst the array of gifts, the undisputed favorite was a set of play eggs. This made perfect sense, as her specific, earnest request to Santa had been for “eggs and ice cream” – a simple wish that brought immense joy.

After a good twenty minutes immersed in the world of her play kitchen, whipping up imaginary culinary masterpieces, we gently guided her back to the Christmas tree. It was time to uncover more surprises. It’s worth noting that a significant portion of the gifts under our tree, roughly 70%, were from or for our extended family and friends, reflecting our minimalist approach to personal gift-giving between ourselves.

Clara eagerly tore through a few more presents from other family members, each reveal met with fresh excitement. Her haul included vibrant stickers, an assortment of markers, practical new clothes, creative Lego sets, and a wonderfully warm winter hat. This hat, adorned with long braids on the sides, quickly earned the affectionate nickname “pigtails” from Clara herself, adding another layer of charm to her new winter accessory.

Burger’s Festive Treats
Our furry family member, Burger, wasn’t forgotten in the holiday merriment either. He received a generous bag overflowing with his absolute favorite bone treats, alongside a few other delectable delights. His love for these treats is legendary; they even managed to coax him out of bed before his usual noon wake-up call on Christmas morning. Truly, what a devoted companion!

Our Thoughtful Gift Exchange: Tokens of Affection
Once Clara and Burger were happily engrossed in their respective bounties, Sherry and I seized a quiet moment to exchange our “tokens of affection.” These aren’t grand gestures, but rather carefully chosen items that reflect our understanding of each other’s current interests and needs.
Gifts for Me: Practical Style and Personal Touch
Sherry, always observant, picked up on my recent declaration about needing new t-shirts. She thoughtfully gifted me a stylish stack of tees from Fab.com, a website that has become my recent go-to for unique apparel. What made these shirts particularly special was their subtle connection to things I love: one featured a Virginia theme, another a clever maze design, one celebrated bikes, and another paid homage to New York. It was incredibly cool to receive comfortable, everyday t-shirts that also held personal significance, making me want to hug my wife with extra gratitude for her keen insight (and for not buying me a tie!).

Gifts for Sherry: Playful Surprises and Home Comforts
Sherry has recently been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo, though I’m 99% certain she’s just teasing me. So, in the spirit of playful reciprocation, I decided to mess with her back a little and got her some fun temporary tattoos from Tattly. It was all in good fun, and the surprise brought a chuckle.

To extend the fun, I even included a children’s monster pack for Clara. This proved to be an unexpected hit! Within minutes, we were all sporting matching, temporary ink on our arms, turning a simple gift into a delightful family activity and a shared moment of laughter.

I also remembered Sherry mentioning these charming porcelain cottage lanterns from Ballard Designs in her holiday gift roundup (though they’re no longer available, they’re similar to other popular ceramic decor). I got her the large one, and my sister and mom coordinated to get her the two smaller ones, completing a beautiful set. Could white ceramic buildings be the new white ceramic animal trend? Sherry cooed over them for quite a while, and they now grace our mantelpiece, adding a whimsical, cozy touch to our home. I’d definitely categorize these as a resounding success.

Sherry is remarkably skilled at dropping specific hints – often in the form of emails playfully titled “Think Santa knows that I love this?” – making my job as a gift-giver pleasantly straightforward. So, I astutely picked up on the notion that she would absolutely adore a vibrant, colorful pillow from House of Pillows on Etsy. Its lively design and soft texture perfectly complemented her aesthetic, and it quickly found its place adding a pop of color to our living space.

And finally, it simply wouldn’t feel like Christmas without Sherry receiving some new earrings. I chose these stunning emerald-colored ones from Kendra Scott. While they appear a bit more teal in the photograph, in real life, their rich emerald hue is captivating. Sherry loves their substantial size and vivid color, and I particularly appreciate their arrowhead-like shape, adding an intriguing detail. It was a win-win, a beautiful accessory that appealed to both our tastes.

Extended Family Celebrations: “Second Christmas” at the Grandparents’
After our intimate family present-opening concluded at home (a little Christmas pun for you!), we packed up and moseyed over to my mom and dad’s house. This marked the beginning of “Second Christmas,” a bustling gathering with our extended family. We enjoyed a casual Christmas lunch surrounded by my parents, sisters, brothers-in-law, nephews, and even my aunt, uncle, cousins, and their children, who traveled down for the day from Northern Virginia. As you can imagine, with such a large and loving crowd, there was indeed more present opening, extending the festive cheer.

Clara’s Favorite “Second Christmas” Discovery
Among all the wonderful gifts Clara received at “Second Christmas,” her absolute favorite were these engaging Melissa & Doug Make-A-Face stickers, a thoughtful present from her cousin Elsa. This simple sticker pad quickly became a highlight of her day, sparking endless creativity and giggles.

Honestly, these stickers may very well be my new favorite present too! Watching the hilarious and imaginative faces Clara constructs is truly priceless. Initially, Sherry helped guide her with sticker placement, as you can see with that first eye. However, we soon discovered that the real fun began when we allowed Clara complete creative freedom. Our role shifted to simply helping her peel the stickers from the page, while the artistic placement on the faces was entirely hers, leading to some truly unique and comical creations.

Cherished Family Moments and Unforgettable Fun
As with any Christmas, the most invaluable part of the day was the precious family time we shared. From heartfelt conversations to playful antics, every moment contributed to the rich tapestry of our holiday memories. Here’s a sweet snapshot of Clara enjoying some quality girl time with her cousin Elsa, their bond clearly shining through.

And here’s a candid moment after we realized, with a chuckle, that we had accidentally dressed somewhat similarly – though I must admit, I was missing the fabulous fur boots! These little, unplanned coincidences often add to the charm of family gatherings.

Perhaps the most amusing and certainly the most unusual part of our day was the makeshift indoor playground my dad ingeniously set up in his garage. With six energetic kids under the age of five needing entertainment, this creative solution kept them happily occupied and out of the way of the bustling lunch preparations happening inside the house. As unconventional as it might look – yes, that is indeed a slow slide leading into an empty baby pool – it was a brilliant way for the little ones to burn off some energy. So, if you ever find yourself mistaking us for being super classy or remarkably fancy, just remember this quintessential part of our Christmas celebration. It was perfectly imperfect, filled with laughter, and absolutely awesome!

That pretty much sums up the essence of our Christmas this year. And you already know all about the delightful Christmas dinner we hosted at our house on Monday, a perfect culmination to the festive period.
